JUNIOR RIFLE PROGRAM

It was a good month at the Trap fields. Fair weather brought out not only our regulars, but also some shooters

we haven't seen in a while. With over 300 rounds shot last month we've been quite busy. It's always best to arrive early to ensure your choice of positions and number of rounds you would like to shoot. I would like to remind everyone that the second Saturday of each month we set up Trap #2 to throw doubles. Trap#3 will still be set for regulation Trap. Come out and try both. Just bring plenty of ammo. The next one will be November 11th. I would like to congratulate Chris Ebley for shooting his first 25 straight. Good job As always #8 shot and cash or check only, at the Trap trailer.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

It appears NRA Basic Pistol will be back. NRA has scrapped its "Blended" training approach as of late December 2016 and the original Basic Pistol Course will be brought back sometime this

year. As soon as those plans are finalized, AAF&G will schedule such a class. Best estimate is late summer or early fall for NRA Basic Pistol at AAF&G. Please email AAF&G Training if you wish to take the NRA Basic Pistol class and you will be notified once the next class if formalized. Please view the official AAF&G Training Schedule that can be found on the AAF&G Website under EDUCATION for future classes: http://www.aafg.org/education.html. We are also asking the membership for training feedback. Did you miss a specific class and want to see if it is offered again? Is there a class not offered that you feel will benefit the AAF&G community? Please contact the AAF&G Training team at: [email protected]. We want to hear from you!!!

IDPAPROPOSED BYLAWS

CHANGES

At our October meeting, the Board of Directors passed a motion to recommend a set of

changes to the Association Bylaws for approval by the members. As the current bylaws specify, such changes must be approved in a quorum vote of the membership, so the vote will be scheduled to happen during the Annual Meeting on December 14th. As also required by the bylaws, the proposed changes must be available for at least thirty (30) days prior to the vote for review by the members.

I have posted the proposed changes to the AAF&G Forum (the link can be found on the club’s homepage). The thread is titled Proposed Bylaws Changes for Dec 2017 and can be found in the AAF&G › Clubhouse › Club Business topic area. In that post you will find a Microsoft Word DOCX file showing tracked changes from the current bylaws to the proposed version. For those who prefer a different format, prior to the November 9th General Meeting the proposed changes will be posted in the clubhouse, as well.

At first glance, there seem to be quite a lot of changes. When you look closely, you will find there are a small number of new areas (formally defining the Range Safety Committee, restructuring the existing Standing Committees to align better with how committees have been operating in practice, and explicitly defining electronic business for the Board). Some sections have been relocated to help improve overall document flow, mostly regarding Membership categories. Lastly, a fair amount of minor grammatical and wording fixes have been made, as well as some changes to clean up potential inconsistencies that have arisen over the history of the document.

If you have any questions of comments on the proposed changes, I encourage you to use the forum thread for discussion, or to engage with any club Officer or Director if you prefer.

Colin WynneChairman, AAF&G Board of Directors.

Thoughts for Consideration• Gun control means using both hands.

• Why do you carry a .45? Because they don't make a .46!

• Gun Control is not about guns; it's about control.

• Those who trade Liberty for security have neither.

• The Second Amendment is in place in case they ignore the others.

• If guns cause crime, then matches cause arson.

• Who has the best reaction time, you and your 1911 or the 911 operator?

PRECISION PISTOL

NAVY VISITS

October 7th AAF&G hosted a set of Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) matches for Service

Pistol and 22 rimfire. It was a great day as 16 Midshipmen armed with 45 cal 1911s came to get some match experience and try their hands at earning points awards towards Distinguished Badges. Alas, while they won no awards this time, they were ladies and gentlemen all, and a real pleasure to have on the line. Their youth, intelligence, and eagerness are confidence-inspiring and just plain fun. It is always special to have men and women from our services join us. If only there was time for much more! And as to awards, there were only a very few won that day. In fact, only one shooter broke into the winner’s circle. Our Mike Merritt shot his way into more CMP EIC points towards his Distinguished 22 badge. No CMP Service Pistol points will be awarded as this time no one made the cut line. But no worries, there is another opportunity for both CMP and NRA victories October 28th (after press time for this SCORE issue).

SQUEEEZE ME

All right, calm down, we are just talking about triggers here.It is a happy time when folks new to precision pistol come out and join us. They are frequently no strangers to handguns, but are often new to the idea of shooting them with maximum accuracy. Our usual newbie comes prepared to align the sights, get a glimpse of a sight picture as the gun wobbles past the target, and then pull the trigger. Well, it just doesn’t work like that. First off, normal human reflexes take about a quarter second, and the sights are not really where you thought they were when the trigger was pulled. And second, the act of pulling the trigger like that moves the gun. Result: no joy. Here is the way that will work: Learn to slowly add pressure to the trigger until it fires. That’s the squeeeeze part. Slowly and steadily add pressure. The shot should be a surprise. While all that is going on, just do your best to hold sight alignment. Don’t worry so much about sight picture, just go for great alignment and accept whatever movement on the target the Shooting Gods are giving that day. If you do that, odds are your shot will be in the black. That’s a good thing. And another good thing is that you can help train yourself to do the above by dry firing! Of course you can also join us. We train and practice once a week. Check out the calendar.

CANDIDATE BIOGRAPHIESFor President - Matt Schwartz

I am a 43-year-old avid competition pistol shooter and member of Anne Arundel Fish and Game (AAF&G) in good standing since 2015. I have served as intelligence professional for the Department of the Army as both a Soldier and Civilian for over 20 years; my military service includes multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. I have served in numerous leadership positions throughout my career; from a Team Leader in Iraq to a Battalion Operations Officer. I believe these positions make me uniquely qualified for consideration to serve as President of AAF&G. I am a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). My certifications include NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO), USPSA Range Officer, International Defensive Pistol Association Safety Officer, and AAF&G RSO. I spend my weekends shooting regional USPSA matches, including travel to Pennsylvania and Virginia where I have met great people, made friends, and learned how other clubs operate in a safe and friendly manner for all shooters. I also enjoy annual pheasant hunting over Thanksgiving weekends with my father, brother-in-law, and his German shorthaired pointer, Radar. At AAF&G, I serve as a Match Director for monthly AAF&G USPSA matches. I volunteer my time building stage props, acquiring targets and material, and designing fun, yet challenging stages. I also serve as the AAF&G Plinking Range Chair, where I’ve implemented simple yet effective changes to insure members can shoot in a safe and accommodating manner. I have also volunteered for AAF&G Action Pistol Range clean up sessions. I believe volunteerism is the lifeblood of a gun club. I would like to take a more active role as President with the goal of enhancing productive relationships between all shooting disciplines and ensuring continued success for the Club for years to come.

For Vice President - Ramona Yurwitz (incumbent)

My name is Ramona Yurwitz, aka Mona, and Millcreek Mona and I am running for the Vice President position of AAF&G. I have been a member for about 15 years. I have completed the NRA Home Firearm Safety & Basic Pistol and the Personal Protection in the Home classes. I started shooting Cowboy Action with my husband Bob (been married 47 years) I have also shot Bullseye, Rimfire, and Trap. I love shooting in competitions and I love the fellowship that this club has to offer. My goals are to get more women involved in the club and to have more family oriented functions. I am a Native American (Osage), a retired Postal Clerk (Millersville), a Past Regent of the Women of the Moose, a DAR and Colonial Dames member. I have held various offices in these organizations and in the community. I worked with Meals on Wheels for four years, until they changed their

volunteer duties. Bob and I have two grown sons, two nearly grown granddaughters, and two mini-dachshunds. I quilt as a hobby and work as a fill in clerk at Cottonseed Glory in Annapolis.

For Treasurer - Randy Ronzitti (incumbent)I’ve been an AAF&G member since 2013, and started Action Pistol in July of 2012. I have held a life membership in the National Rifle Association since I was 22 years old. A friend of mine introduced me to rifle shooting during my college years and have been hooked ever since then in the shooting sports. In 1974 or so, I lived in Dallas Texas for a year, well if you live in Texas you need to buy a pistol and a shotgun. My first pistol was a 1911 Colt Gold Cup for bullseye competition; I still have that pistol. While in Dallas I was pretty active in a club’s bullseye competition. Moving back to Maryland I did mostly plinking at indoor ranges, and some rifle plinking at outdoor ranges. I did teach my son and daughter how to safely handle and shoot firearms and never to touch a firearm unless I was informed and in the immediate area. My extensive travel requirement for my profession didn’t allow for much formal practice or competition time. Upon retirement in 2011, I made a concerted effort to get back in the shooting sports and looked around a lot and found out about Anne Arundel Fish and Game, a shooting sports club, just up my alley. I started seriously shooting around the summer of 2012 and in meeting the various members of AAF&G found many common interests and good companionship. I would like to give back to the club to support good sportsmanship, teaching young people the right way to use firearms, and of course support the 2nd Amendment and the whole Constitution of the United States. For Treasurer, my background is very successful program management for 15 years at a private federal defense contractor.

For Secretary - Deborah Gay (incumbent)

Please review my qualifications as a candidate for the position of Secretary for the Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association, Inc.

I have also been an Anne Arundel County Fair entrant and prizewinner for six years.

I have manned tables at various gun shows for AAF&G causes and I participate in general work parties as requested and promote AAF&G at other activities.Serving as Secretary has allowed me to develop friendships across a wide spectrum of the shooting community as well as provide a reliable person for the job.

For Director - David ChumbleyI wish to be considered for nomination to the Board of Directors. I have been a member of Anne Arundel Fish & Game for 9 years and I have been a resident of Severna Park for the past 12 years. I have been a police officer for the last 16 years in Washington, D.C. I embrace all of the shooting disciplines that occur at our facility from high power rifle to cowboy action. Often, I can be found at the high power rifle range shooting anything from a Savage 99 to a Colt AR-15. I enjoy the outdoors from hunting to kayaking and make every attempt to participate in the outdoor sports as much as I can. I believe that I can be a valuable member of the Board of Directors. I can bring a fair and balanced approach to the issues that are handled by the Board of Directors. If selected for this position I will carry out my duties without biases, prejudice, or partiality. I have organized and support an IDPA shooting team primarily composed of club shooters, known as “Team Tango Down.” The team participates in sanctioned matches in across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania. I personally have traveled as far as Texas to participate in sanctioned matches.1

i) I am classified as a sharpshooter in IDPA, and a class “C” shooter in USPSA.

ii) I am a certified IDPA safety officer.

iii) Membership:

(2) IDPA; (3) USPSA; (4) Civilian Marksmanship Program.

d) Other certifications: Concealed carry permit holder (Maryland).

e) Purpose: I am seeking this candidacy to support the club, and promote the positive attributes of shooting sports. I would like to develop and promote a working relationship with the community and the club, promoting activities to support worthy causes, such as local law enforcement, military and public safety.

Thank you for your consideration. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.

For Director - Darryl SwiggettI grew up in Texas and shot and hunted regularly with my Father but got away from shooting for over a decade once I moved to the Washington, DC area in 1988. I got back in to shooting informally with friends in the early 2000s and discovered IDPA in 2007 and started shooting matches at AAF&G. Over the years of shooting matches at AAF&G, I came to know many, many members here and liked them all and decided that I wanted to be part of this club. I started my membership process in 2015 and became a full member in 2016. I am a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, an NRA Range Safety Officer and a NRA Certified Pistol Instructor as well as an IDPA Safety Officer.I am a very active shooter in IDPA. I compete heavily in sanctioned matches across the country and have competed in over 50 sanctioned matches, multiple national championships and one IDPA World Championship. I am a 5 Gun Master class shooter in IDPA and have six top-10 and three top-5 overall finishes. I was the ESP Division Champion and low overall score at the 2017 Maryland State IDPA Match. At AAF&G I enjoy shooting IDPA and steel matches and serving as an SO during the matches. I also serve as a Club RSO and have enjoyed that duty and getting out and meeting other members of the club during those assignments. I have taken part in the Ernie Clarke Memorial Match at the club and really enjoy seeing people getting out and trying different shooting disciplines and expanding their knowledge at that event. I have attended a few Board of Director meetings this year and have come to respect the work that they do and the decisions they have to make on behalf of the club. I am interested in taking a more active role in AAF&G and am seeking a seat on the Board of Directors. I am extremely interested in training and would like to see training opportunities for our members increase. I would also like to make sure the club resources are being maximized for members use. I would also like to explore any ideas for expanding the capabilities of the club both to satisfy the needs of current members and to draw new members in.

Eccles HP Rifle RangeCLUB MATCHES

Service Rifle Matches: The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 (except M1A) Match will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. The NRA 500 match (about which see below) will be held on the preceding Friday, November 3rd from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Vintage Military Rifle Match: The next Vintage Military Rifle Match will be held on November 18th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon and will be for Manual Bolt Rifles to commemorate WWI – the War to End All Wars – America’s entry into it and the armistice of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 99 years ago which ended that war. New Service Rifle and Vintage Military Rifle Match shooters should consider arriving NLT 9:30am Saturday in order to familiarize themselves with the course of fire and get guidance in positions and use of the sling. A five minute unlimited sighter shots sighting-in period will precede the record fire phases. For details on high power rifle match requirements, please visit the web page at http://aafg.org/events.html.

Very Vintage Rifle Activity: The next Very Vintage Rifle Match will be held as usual on the 5th Saturday of the month, December 30th. This match is for original or reproduction single shot rifles chambered for cartridges originally loaded with black powder (but which can be loaded with smokeless for the match). This era represented the zenith of the development of highly accurate black powder rifles and black powder rifle cartridge development

used not only by military worldwide but for target shooting and hunting all sorts of game on all continents, examples of which include but certainly are not limited to the 45-70, 45-90, 45-110, 44-77, 43 Spanish, 43 Spanish Reformado, 43 Spanish Reformado Redux, 43 Mauser, 43 Egyptian, 43 Turkish, 11.5x50R Werder, 18.84mm x 57R Wanzl-Albini, 14×33mm Wänzl-Schwänzl, 11.15x42R and 11.15x58RWerndl, 58 Berdan, 50-70, .577 Snider, .577-450 Peabody-Martini, Martini-Henry, and Martini & Rossi Gibson as well as the many other smaller caliber black powder cartridges that proliferated in this era until the advent of smokeless powder.

Shooters downrange? This is a reminder to all users of the Eccles range that they must first determine that there is NO ONE DOWNRANGE and that the FIRING LINE is HOT before bringing an uncased firearm into the pavilion or before uncasing a firearm in the pavilion. We hope to have a visual signal installed that shooters can use to determine range/firing line status from outside. Once installed we’ll advise Eccles Range users in how to use it.

Sound redirection: In order to best take advantage of the current sound containment and redirection efforts on the Eccles Range, shooters are requested to pull the shooting benches rearward to a point where the front of the bench is slightly behind the line of the 6”x6” vertical supports so as to better contain, absorb, and direct muzzle blasts. Yes, this might make it a tad noisier inside the pavilion, but hey, you are wearing hearing protection, yes? Soon this will be a no-brainer since we’ll have installed a rail along the pad to make sure the benches stay behind the line of the 6”x6”s.
