From the Vicar’s Desk...Dearly beloved in Christ,

2

The central event that made the human destiny hopeful is theatoning death of Christ on the Cross. The Cross is not merelya Christian symbol but a way of salvation. It is not merely anornamental device but our hope for eternity. It is still the onlyhope of salvation for sinful humanity. Jesus made it clear thatonly the Son can make free those who are slave to sin (John.8:31-36). In this Lenten season, let us once again cling to thecross for freedom from sin and to avail the free gift of salvationfrom cross. As we are now entering a new financial year, I welcome allthe new office bearers of the parish and the newly electedexecutive committee. We are also thankful to the out goingoffice bearers for their commendable service to the parish. Iremember with gratitude the whole hearted support of all ourmembers in terms of financial support and the activeparticipation in all activities of the parish. I especially appreciateyou all for the spirit of unity and devotion you all have showntowards the parish. Since the parish is the body of Christ, weall should always be reminded of our status as the children ofour loving God and to exhibit that through our Holy life andservice to the fellow human beings.I take this opportunity to thank John P. Varghse achen andfamily for their services to the parish for two years. Achenalso rendered his valuable help in the editorial board of theParish Herald along with Mr. T. Thomas, Mr. George Mathew(Suraj Apts), and Mr. I. John Thomas. Since Lijo John achenand family are joining with us from May onwards as theassistant vicar, we warmly welcome them to our fellowshipand pray that their ministry be a blessing to the parish in thecoming years. May God bless you all.

Alex AchenHosana, March, 2015

Meditation on the Cross…,New Life of the Easter…, and

A Word of Thanks…1. Meditation on the Cross…

We have set apart this Lenten time fruitfully with the Lord and we are goingto celebrate one more Easter. Christian life is a faithful journey towardsChrist. We have made this journey of faith together under the shadow of theCross. The cross is a sacred symbol of the Christian faith. It is a symbol ofredemption, signifying Christ’s death on the cross for humans’ sins. PopeBenedict XVI in his book ‘The Spirit of the Liturgy’ narrates that, ‘the signof the Cross is a confession of faith: I believe in him who suffered for meand rose again; in him who has transformed the sign of shame into a sign ofhope and of the love of God that is present with us. By signing ourselveswith the Cross, we place ourselves under the protection of the Cross, hold itin front of us like a shield that will guard us in all the distress of daily life andgive us the courage to go on.’

Theologian Kazoh Kitamori says that, “the pain of God on the Cross healsour pains.” The “pain of God” reflects His love toward those turning againstit. The cross means sharing the suffering of Christ to the last and to thefullest. The cross is not the terrible end, but the beginning of our communionwith Christ. In the words of C S Song, ‘to be human is to suffer and Godknows that. That is why God suffers too. Suffering is where God and humanbeings meet. It is the one place where all persons, kings, priests, paupers, and the prostitutes reorganize themselves as frail and transient human beingsin need of God’s love. Suffering brings us closer to God and God closer tous.’

Cross challenges our value system radically. So many of the priorities andideals we have as individuals become insignificant when the light of thecross is focused on them. So many of our goals in the church do not bearwitness to a church born from the pierced side of Christ. Living as we are inthe materialistic society and a consumerist culture, used as we are to anaggressive, manipulative, and exploitative world, we need to listen themeaning of the cross once again. Cross shatters all our pre-conceived imagesof God. On the cross we encounter, not a God of majesty and power, but one

who surprise us by his weakness and scandalizes us by his helplessness. Onthe cross, God is revealed in darkness and obscurity. On the cross we comeinto contact with a God who is deeply moved by the pain and distress ofhumanity. On the cross we come face to face with the God of surprises, aGod who rouses us out of our false sense of security and turns upside downour entire value system. The way of the Cross is a challenge to those whoare reluctant to follow the powerlessness, weakness and humiliation of thecross

The cross stands as a concrete witness to the fact that human fulfillment isthe result of openness to others in freedom and love and this openness iscomplete only when one is ready to lay down one’s own life. . The cross isa catalyst for Christ in His fight against the various manifestations of evil inlife and society. In other words our service for the world must be distinguishedby its identification with the oppressed, by its option for the poor. Thus Jesusbrings to birth the new humanity and becomes the paradigm of all humanity. For us Christians, the cross is both the symbol and the instrument of ourhuman and Christian maturity.

Rather than the wooden frame on which Jesus was nailed to death, thecross signifies God’s solidarity with the victims of unjust systems andstructures. It also expresses human sin and disobedience. Rather than amere faith appropriation of the cross, what is expected of us is our willingnessto follow Christ on the way of the cross. It reflects that the:

Church is a called out community for a meaningful engagement inthe experiences of the society for the sake of the cross.

Life and witness of the church become relevant when she lovinglyand painfully involves with humanity and humanity’s predicamentfor the cause of the cross.

The cross is no more a mere symbol within the structure of thechurch, but is the culmination of God’s love and fidelity towards theexploited, oppressed, alienated and discriminated community.

The theology of the cross is an ongoing articulation of God’s suffering, pain, agony and humiliation manifested on the cross- as the passionof Christ signify God’s solidarity with the victims of unjust systemsand structures.

2. New Life of the Easter…Easter is a festival of hope. Easter is and always has been a celebration ofthe resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Easter is an event in the life of thechurch, among those who position themselves in his presence ready to benourished. As Easter is the new life given to Christ, so Easter is the new lifeoffered to the church- and eventually to the world. Christians believe notonly in a future bodily resurrection, we also believe in the importance of ourbodily lives now, with all the potentials from the Above. It was MaryMgdalene who was the first to celebrate Easter. The way she used tocelebrate Easter is different from ours. She went and announced to thedisciples, “I have seen the Lord”. She became a hope to the disciples whowere fallen and estranged. Practicing Easter life continues to be risky becauseit contradicts the deathly commitments of our world — one devoured bygreed, anxiety, and violence. A practice of Easter life continues also to beone of joy, as attested to by contemporary witnesses who are freed of ancientfears and live by Jesus’ command that we “love one another.” The walkwith the risen Christ is an ongoing process of having our anxiety transformedin faith, and our despair transformed in hope.

3. A Word of Thanks…It is very painful for us to say Good-bye to the East Mar Thoma Church. Wefeel a deep sense of gratitude to all as we are going to leave the parish andto take charge of the Jangamakotte Mission. There is a great value for me inreminiscing about two years of service in the Parish as an Assistant Vicar. We are blessed with God’s guidance, grace and strength that have sustainedus along every step of the ministry of the Church. I record my sinceregratitude to Rev.Dr.Alex Thomas Achen & Family as they moulded andinstigated my pastoral skills and achen remains as a radiant figure in the roleof a teacher and pastor. We are obliged to all the members of the parish fortheir loving care and prayerful support that we received during the entireperiod.

As a new Missionary of the Jangamakotte Mission I expect your earnestsupport to the vivid needs of the Mission. I invite you to be the Salt and Lightin the life of our fellow beings who are less privileged to us. Christian life isa call and commitment to share our blessings with the people who deserveit. I appreciate the members of the parish who actively take part in thecolouring of the life of others in our Lord Jesus Christ. The Grace of ourLord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Wishing You a Blessed & Joyful EasterJohn P. Varghese Achen & Family

SENIOR CITIZENS COLUMN

Handel’s Messiah and Bach’sSt. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion

Dr. C. T. Thomas

The German-born English Composer George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) was a prolific writer of operas, oratorios, concertos and othertypes of musical compositions. But today he is best loved andremembered for his oratorio Messiah. Working under the white heatof inspiration, Handel completed this mammoth masterpiece in a littleover three weeks. There were times during its composition when hefelt he was granted a radiant vision of heaven open and of AlmightyGod Himself. Having touched the hearts of millions down the ages, the Messiah remains among the world’s most popular and best-lovedoratorios.The libretto was supplied by the Rev. Charles Lennens. The words, suitably adapted, are from the King James Bible. This great workbrings together passages of surpassing beauty and memorable musicto give us a unique aesthetic and emotional experience. The Messiahis in three parts. The first part deals with the Incarnation, the secondwith the suffering and death of Jesus. The theme of the final part is theResurrection. The first part resounds with the joyous hope of thecoming of the Messiah. It comprises messianic prophecies mostlyfrom Isaiah. Memorable pieces include Comfort ye my people (Isa.40: 1-3) and Every valley shall be exalted (Isa. 40:4), both fortenor voice, And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed for chorus(Isa. 40:5), O, thou that tallest good tidings to Zion (Isa. 40:9) andFor unto us a child is born for chorus (Isa. 9:6). Further noteworthypieces from this section are the soft-sounding Pastoral Symphony, evocative of the sights and sounds of rural Nazareth, He shall feedhis flock (Isa. 40:11) and Come unto him (Matthew 11: 28-30).Behold the Lamb of God (John 1:29) for chorus opens part II.Another touching piece is He was despised and rejected of men, aman of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isa. 53:3) for contraltosolo. The part comes to a rousing close with the Hallelujah Chorus(Revelation 19:1). At the London premiere of the Messiah in 1743with the reining monarch George II in attendance, at the rendition ofthis piece, the king was so emotionally stirred that he spontaneouslyrose in his seat, and the entire audience soon followed suit. Since thenit has become a tradition for the audience to remain standing when the

chorus is sung. Notable pieces from part III are Behold I tell you amystery for bass (pronounced beis) solo (I Corinthians 15: 52) andthe beautiful air for soprano I know that my redeemer liveth (Job19: 25-26). With choral pieces interspersed with solo voices, whenwe listen to the Messiah, the music takes us through a wide range ofemotions, joy at the coming of the Messiah, pathos at his suffering anddeath and triumph at Christ’s victory over death.

Talking about music can have only very limited value. One mustlisten to music and music such as the Messiah that soars to such sublimeheights deserves to be listened to with complete relaxation of bodyand mind, absolute attention and total concentration to derive from itthe fullest aesthetic enjoyment and maximum spiritual experience andbenefit. So why not gift yourself during this Christmas season with arecording of this musical treasure? And having done so, sit down andtreat yourself to this rich musical feast and have a highly rewardingspiritual experience.

Just a few months hence we shall all be recalling the Passionof our Lord. Among the greatest musical productions of WesternChristendom, specifically relevant and appropriate for the season, areJohann Sebastian Bach’s (1685-1750) St. John Passion (1724) andSt. Matthew Passion (1729). While in the Messiah all parts aresung, in these oratorios, besides solos, chorus and orchestra, thenarrative passages from the Gospels are delivered in the form ofrecitatives. The words this time are all in German, the first based onMatthew, chapters 26 and 27 and John on chapters 18 and 19. So ifyou are looking for a recording, look for one with a brochure with anEnglish translation. What better way to base your meditation duringthe coming Lent season than words and thoughts from the Gospelsand Bach’s reflections on them? Many people prefer the much longerMatthew to John. For my part, I do not know which to choose. Both are magnificent! Christian art and music can vastly enhance ourunderstanding and enjoyment of the Bible.GlossaryOratorio: “A long piece of music for singers and an orchestra, usuallybased on a story from the Bible” (Oxford Advanced Learner’sDictionary).Libretto: “The words that are sung or spoken in an opera or musicalplay” (OALD).Air: “A piece of music to be sung or played as a solo” (Shorter OxfordEnglish Dictionary).Bass: “The lowest tone or part in music, for instruments or voices”(OALD).

My God - How Great Thou ArtBy Darter

Contributed by: Thomas PhilipsI wonder how God is working in this world. I often fail to see thewonderous and marvelous work of God in the world. When I started meditating on how God is great. It came to me as asurprise. In this world God started creating everything from small things;I wonder how many people seat this wonder or just pass it off as anevery day affair. One thing that comes to my mind is the coconut. Have you everwondered and marveled how a coconut is formed. As I see it first apod comes out on the coconut tree between the leaves. It grows andwhen the pod matures it opens and a stem with flowers come outalthough many flowers fall off but some tiny flowers stick on an itgrows and grows into a ful coconut. This coconut has 1. An outertough skin, 2. underneath that a sizeable amount of thick cushioninghusk, 3. this husk then covers a very hard shell, 4. the hard shell protectsa white pulp, 5. in the center of it a sizeable amount of sweet waterwhich humans use it as a refreshing drink. My question is how did it all come there or where did it all comefrom? Since it is an every day affair we don't see the miracle. I knowthat unless God is behind it, it cannot happen; that is my belief. Godhas programmed and built a software into the coconut tree. God hasa purpose for each of the five items pointed out.The outer skin shouldnot break when it falls from a tall tree, The husk should give cushioningeffect so that the hard shell should not break. The shell should preservethe pulp and water so that humans can use it. Now if a coconut fallsfrom a tall coconut tree it hits the ground, bounces make a triplesomersault and rolls away from the tree and rest, but the coconut willnot break or splatter. When I see this I can only say 'MY GOD - Howgreat thou art.'To top it all if you plant the coconut in the ground you will see acoconut tree growing out from this small thing. What a tall tree?! It isnow standing as if it is a giant and its leaves as arms of the giant wavingto the sky and beating its breast as if to say 'MY GOD - How greatthou art'. Finally this tree also products fruit.

God has programmed the small coconut to consume nutrient, fertiliserand water from the ground and to reject all that is not necessary for itsgrowth. Yes, the coconut tree has a special diet God has programmedthat into it then only can it grow into a healthy tree. It will consumenothing other than what it is programmed for.The same thing can be thought of about a mango tree, next time youhold a mango in your hand say I am holding a mango tree in my hand.Jesus Christ himself has told us to see and marvel and wonder atGod's creation. Jesus Christ tells about a mustard seed and showsthere is a purpose for that to grow into a tree. Mk. 4: 30-32.God who created the world and all that are in it has created humanbeings. Human beings are the only creatures who has brains to choosewhat they want to eat or drink for their growth. No other animals orplants can eat whatever they want for eg. the lion cannot eat grass norcan the elephant can eat meat, but human beings can. Whereas humanscan eat or drink what they want whether vegetarian or non-vegetarian.Our food habits show in which direction we are heading, that is, towardsGod or towards Satan (Devil). God after creating humans said befruitful and increase in number. In fact God created a garden calledEden and gave it to Adam and Eve eat its fruits and to grow to behealthy human beings. The other great thing that God has implanted in humans is that theywant to go to heaven to be with God. The rich young ruler wantedeternal life that is to go to heaven. Jesus makes him to give the answerhimself. Lk 10:27, He said to Jesus 'Love the Lord your God with allyour heart and with allyour soul and with all your strength and with allyour mind, and love your neighbour as yourself. When I meditated on all your strength, I see that many of us are notloving God with all our strength. Actually some of us are loving ourGod with whatever left - over - strength we have. What I mean by left-over-strength is that we abuse our bodies in sucha way that we are loosing our strength instead of gaining it day by day;then how can we say we are loving God with all our strength. It is onlyleft-over-strength.
