This month’s topic: Series Collections in the Youth and Young Adult Areas
By Marnie Schmidt, Adult Services Librarian Adults aren’t the only ones who want more of a good thing when it comes to books. Kids, too, become attached to certain characters and are certainly willing to tear through the next book in the series that continues the story. If you have a youngster or three in your life– or if you are a kid at heart– the Youth and Young Adult areas of the New Berlin Library each proudly display sizable Series Collections, featuring a variety of storylines. One of the series collections in the Youth area is the Easy Reader Series Collection. Easy readers are books designed for children who are beginning to read or are relatively new readers. The books, varying by reading level, are illustrated and have a controlled vocabulary. In this section, you can find series such as Amelia Bedelia, Cam Jansen, Horrible Harry and Nate the Great.
Some of the series follow a chronological storyline while others are a series of different adventures and can be read in any order. The Youth area is also home to the Youth Series Collection, which boasts a vast array of genres and storylines. In this section, you will find popular series as the A to Z Mysteries, Boxcar Children,
Captain Underpants, Geronimo Stilton, Judy Moody, and Mysteries in Our National Parks. A couple of newer series include Echo and that Bat Pack, a series in which three children team up with a bat to solve mysteries, and Myth-O-Mania, a playful series based on Greek myths. This collection also includes books that might not be technically thought of as a series, but certainly belong grouped together. These include Jokes books, I Spy/ Look ‘n Find books, and Superheroes books. The Young Adult Series Collection is also host to a diverse set of series. Within, you will find series about beautiful, popular rich teens such as A-List and Clique as well as series about supernatural teens such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and T*witches and Christian-based series such as Left Behind and A Life of Faith. In each series collection, the items are arranged in alphabetical order by series title. If you are looking for a particular series, you can do a series search in our cat-alog. If you are not finding what you are looking for, you can also try a keyword or author search. If a title you are looking for is checked out, you can put a hold on the item. When the item comes in, the library will contact you and hold it for you behind the Circulation Desk. If you are looking for a title that New Berlin Public Library does not own, but another CAFÉ library does, you can place a hold to have the item sent to New Berlin. If no CAFÉ libraries own a title you are looking for, a Reference Librarian would be happy to place an interlibrary loan request for you. Remember that library staff will always be happy to assist you.
