The Seekers Sunday school class is two weeks into their new study, based on Hayden Shaw’s Generational IQ:
Christianity Isn’t Dying, Millennials Aren’t the Problem, and the Future Is Bright.
Shaw looks at how one generation has different world views, assumptions, and expectations. He applies these
insights to the Church to help us understand how we can better relate to all people - young and old - in our con-
gregation and community.
The Seekers class is led by Herb Chelton. You are invited to join the class as they listen, learn, and discuss this
important topic. The book is recommended reading from our Vibrant Church Initiative consultant, Rev. Hazel
Jackson.
New beginnings come in various forms, from the beautiful,
flowering amaryllis given to Pastor Wall to the new begin-
ning each of us receives every day! Unlike the flower that
eventually wilts away, we have the ability to keep growing in
faith and belief in Christ Jesus - we are truly blessed!
This faith and belief will see us through the VCI process,
too. “Faith is not a sense, nor sight, nor reason, but
taking God at His Word” (Pastor Wall).

Thanks to all who showed love for last Sunday’s Souper Bowl of Caring food and do-nation drive! A cartload of non-perishables was collected, along with $284 in mone-tary donations.
MANNA is the recipient of your generosity—thank you!
Don’t forget to pick up some soup and sweets today after worship! There will be several varieties of soup to
choose from. Among the sweets will be Denise Stone-burner’s award-winning blackberry pie in miniature form!
This fundraiser is sponsored by the Finance Committee. Pro-ceeds will go toward funding missions and ministries of St.
Matthew’s.
Love donations accepted
Troop 20 scouts also participated in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring/Scouting for Food drive and collected
over 500 items, totaling 432 pounds of food! Their collection was given to Heights Interfaith Ministries Food
Pantry. This is slightly more than was collected last year.
In addition, members of the Diamondback Patrol prepared and served the monthly pancake breakfast here at St.
Matthew’s (see pictures on next page). These two events (including food drive flyer distribution) resulted in the
scouts and parent volunteers performing over 225 hours of service!
After 5 years of dedicated service to St. Matthew’s, Business Administrator Mary Fitzgerald (on left) is retiring. She based her work ethic on her love for and faith in Jesus Christ, and she will
be missed! Stepping into Mary’s old spot is Tiffiany Henningsen, who has
been working with Children’s Weekday Ministries since November 2019. Tiffiany is a native Houstonian and lives in Garden Oaks with her husband and three children. She went to culinary school
in Austin and will return to school (in Houston) next year to pursue accounting. Tiffiany loves baking and visiting the Museum of Natu-ral Science with her kids. She looks forward to meeting everyone and serving at St. Matthew’s.

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the historical contributions of African Ameri-cans to the worship life, mission, and ministry of the church. While February does indeed celebrate progress made, it also reawakens us to continuing issues of poverty, discrimination, and inequality.
This month, take time to consider the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., “Can black people be embraced for the content of their character rather than the color of their skin?”
Pray for an open heart, an open mind, and open eyes to the injustices that continue to fester.
In a recent commentary, the Rev. Gilbert H. Caldwell expressed hope “that each of us in The United Methodist Church will dare to speak and share our truth, knowing that truth-telling by some people is viewed by others as be-ing divisive, because they do not take the time to understand what experiences and influences shaped the truths of people different from themselves.”
God calls us to make history by being peacemakers. Let it begin with us!
