Fuelling your engine Before starting the engine needs to be filled with oil and petrol. Use a good quality engine oil (either SAE 10W30 or SAE 10W40) and 91 Unleaded Petrol. Please refer to engine manual for more details.

SAFETY Preventing accidents is the responsibility of every equipment owner. Ensure you have been instructed by your authorised dealer on all safety issues, both general and specific and the operation and maintenance of the chipper before operating machinery.

Intended uses of machine Do not use for any purpose other than for which the machine is designed. If you have any doubts contact your authorised dealer. Do not modify the design of the machine.

Operator Competency Do not allow persons to operate machinery without full and proper instruction in the use of the machine, adjustments maintenance and the factors of safe operation.

Safe Operating Procedures

Safety equipment must be worn while operating chipper, i.e. safety glasses, ear muffs and work gloves. Persons not wearing safety equipment should not be close to an operating machine.

Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing.

Before starting the machine, check that all screws, nuts, bolts, and other fasteners are properly secured and guards and screens in place. Replace damaged or unreadable warning and operating labels.

Use extra care in handling fuels. They are flammable and vapors are explosive. o Use only an approved container. o Never remove fuel cap or add fuel with the engine running. Allow engine to cool before

refueling. o Do not smoke. o Never refuel the machine indoors. o Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an open flame, such as a

water heater. o If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the engine, but move the machine away from the

area of spillage before starting. o Always replace and securely tighten fuel cap after refueling.

Before starting, ensure the chipper is positioned on level ground. Do not operate the machine on a paved or gravel surface where ejected material could cause injury.

Keep children and spectators clear of the work area at all times and do not operate the machine where there is an immediate hazard to onlookers.

Do not allow children to operate this equipment.

Do not allow hands or any other part of the body or clothing inside the feed chute past the rubber flap, discharge chute, or near any moving part. Keep your face and body away from the feed opening.

Carbon monoxide can be extremely dangerous in enclosed areas; do not run the machine in an enclosed area since the exhaust from the engine contains carbon monoxide, which is colourless, odourless, and tasteless.

Always switch off machine before shifting it.

Always make sure that the engine is switched off and that the cutting disk and engine are at a complete standstill before opening the cutting disk housing.

Before inspecting or servicing any part of the machine, shut off the power source, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, and make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop.

Identifying Hazards and Risks Identify hazards and risks, and take preventative steps to avoid accidents and minimise risk. Possible hazards include, but are not limited to, moving parts, thrown objects, weight of machine and components and the operating environment.

OPERATION

Position the machine level and stable to avoid unnecessary vibrations. WARNING! Do not operate on concrete or bitumen.

The following pre-start checks are to be conducted prior to starting and operating the chipper: 1. Ensure the chipper has been serviced in accordance with this manual. 2. Ensure the chipper is positioned on flat level ground and is stable. 3. Check the security of all chipper components including; nuts, bolts screws and pins. Tighten as

required. 4. Ensure the knives and anvil are secure and that the clearance is set as specified in the maintenance

instructions. 5. Ensure that the feed chute is clear and there is no leftover debris inside the housing which may jam

the machine. 6. Petrol Engine Model. Check that sufficient fuel is in the tank and that the engine oil level shows full.

Refer to engine owner’s manual. 7. PTO Model. Check that the drive shaft is securely attached to the splined shafts on the machine,

and the tractor and that the safety chains are attached.

Starting Procedure – Petrol powered model Disengaging the belt drive: For easy starting of the engine, disengage the belt drive by winding the swivel handle in the counter clock-wise direction until it comes to a stop. Starting the engine:

1. Turn the fuel valve onto the ON position 2. Move the choke lever to the OPEN position (Note: do not use the choke if the engine is warm or the

air temperature is high) 3. Move the throttle lever to the half way position 4. Turn the engine switch to the ON position

5. Turn the key further to the start position, this will crank the engine until such time as the ignition and

fuel system fire the engine. Allow the key to return to the on position and the engine should settle to an idle.

6. As the engine warms up, gradually move the choke lever to the CLOSE position (Refer to engine manual for more detailed instructions)

Engaging the rotor disk: Slowly increase the engine to full speed, and then gradually and slowly engage the belt tension swivel handle in the clock-wise direction, until it comes to a stop. This has to be done slowly to allow the cutting disk to pick up speed; otherwise the engine will stall because there is high inertia in the cutting disk.

Starting Procedure – Tractor mounted, PTO driven model Starting procedure:

1. With the chipper placed firmly on the ground, parking brakes applied and the tractor idling; slowly engage the PTO drive.

2. Increase the engine revs gradually to achieve a PTO speed of 540 rpm.

WARNING! DO NOT exceed PTO speed of 650 rpm. Exceeding 650 rpm will cause machine damage which could lead to personal injury. Ensure the chipper is firmly on the ground during operation.

Shutdown Procedure – Petrol powered model Shutdown procedure:

1. Push the throttle control lever to the idle position 2. Disengage the belt drive by winding the swivel handle in the counter clock-wise direction until the

handle comes to a stop 3. Turn the switch to STOP 4. The rotor will gradually come to a standstill.

WARNING! Do not disengage the belt drive with the machine running at full revs, as this will cause friction and vibration on the belt drive.

Shutdown Procedure – Tractor mounted, PTO driven model Shutdown procedure:

1. Return the tractors throttle to the idle position. 2. Disengage the PTO.

Operation

Before starting the machine, make certain that the feeding chamber is empty.

Keep proper balance and footing at all times. Do not overreach. Never stand at a higher level than the base of the machine when feeding material into it.

Feed only clean material into the machine. Foreign matter like soil, sand, grit, stones, pieces of metal, etc will damage the sharp edge of the cutting knives. Root balls and dead wood will also blunten the blades quickly. Operating the machine with blunt blades causes excessive vibration which may result in damage to the machine.

If the cutting mechanism strikes any foreign objects or if the machine should start making any unusual noise or vibration, immediately shut off the engine and allow the machine to stop. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug and proceed as follows:

1. Inspect for damage.

2. Replace or repair any damaged parts.

3. Check for and tighten any loose parts.

4. Do not attempt to repair the machine unless you are competent to do so.

Avoid feeding short, stubby pieces of wood into the machine, as they tend to bounce and spin in the infeed chute. Feed these short pieces together with longer pieces. After becoming familiar with the machine, prune to suit its capabilities.

Prunings, stalks, vines, leaves, roots and vegetable matter can be processed. The maximum capacity is approximately 40mm diameter branches, depending on the type and hardness of wood. Paper and cardboard can be processed. A better result is obtained if the material is wet prior to processing.

Because the chipper is self-feeding and has a large infeed opening, the machine can easily be stalled with branches that are too big for processing. You will have to hold these branches back and feed the machine with care until you are familiar with its capacity.

Feed limbs and branches through butt end first, leaving the bushy head on. This helps guide the limb down the infeed chute, reduces spinning and the occurrence of ejection of small pieces back up the infeed chute. Some side branches may require pre-cutting so that the branch will ‘self-feed’ more efficiently.

While operating the machine keep a wooden stick handy, approx 100 mm diameter x 600 mm long. This stick will be useful for pushing in short, brushy and very leafy materials and to keep the infeed chute clear.

It is always advisable to process freshly cut materials, as wooden branches get very hard and springy when dried out. They are then more awkward to handle and the knives blunten much quicker.

Do not allow processed material to build up in the discharge area; this may prevent proper discharge and can result in kickback of material through the feed opening. The chipper can clog up with soft, wet or fibrous materials. However, if you feed soft materials intermittently with branches, there should be no problem, as the wood chips tend to clean out any residue left in the machine.

If the machine becomes clogged, shut off the engine (or motor) and disconnect the spark plug wire (electric unit unplug) before cleaning debris.

As the discharged material piles up, move the chipper or the processed material to keep the outlet free. Otherwise blocking will occur. Do not overload the chipper. If the rotor is slowing down, feed the material in slower.

If you wish to clean the machine, wait for the engine to cool down and hose and wash the machine inside and out. There is a drainage hole at the bottom of the housing. Make sure it is not blocked up.

The engine is fitted with oil alert and will not start if the oil level in the sump is too low. It may also stop if it is operated on a steep slope.

Keep all guards and deflectors in place and in good working condition.

Do not tamper with the engine governor settings on the machine; the governor controls the maximum safe operating speed and protects the engine and all moving parts from damage caused by overspeed. Seek authorized service if a problem exists.

Keep the engine clean of debris and other accumulations to prevent damage to the engine or possible fire.

Do not transport this machine while the engine is running.

Shut off the engine whenever you leave the work area

WARNING! Do not open the housing unless the engine and cutting disk are completely stopped.

WARNING! Do not operate the machine wearing loose clothing.

MAINTENANCE Initially after 2 working hours:

Check for any loose nuts and bolts.

Check belt tension. The belts will stretch when they are new.

Grease bearings, being careful not to over grease. There are two bearings, one on each side of the housing. The bearings are greased when they are new, however it is a good idea to grease them after a couple of hours use. One or two pumps are sufficient.

Every 20 working hours:

Check for any loose nuts and bolts.

Check belt tension.

Grease bearings, being careful not to over grease. There are two bearings, one on each side of the housing.

Check sharpness of knives.

Knife Re-sharpening As the knives become blunt or if they are damaged, the machine will lose its self-feeding capability and the material will have to be forced in rather than chipping the material as normal, it may also be discharged in long strips. If the knives are in poor condition, they will have to be removed for professional sharpening and re-dressing on a surface grinder. Ensure that there is plenty of coolant used when grinding, to avoid softening of the material. If you are unable to re-sharpen the knives yourself, either contact a professional saw doctor, or if more convenient contact Hansa to arrange re-sharpening. Normally only a slight touch up is needed. In this way your knives should last for a long period of time.

WARNING! The cutting angle is critical for the performance of the chipper and should be 36°.

To remove and sharpen the knives, proceed as follows:

1. Open the discharge chute. 2. Rotate the disc to gain access to the knives through the top of the housing. 3. Engage the belt drive during knife removal to stop the disk from rotating. 4. Remove the 4 x M12 bolts securing each knife; remove the knives and clamping plate. Be careful not

to drop the nuts, bolts or knives into the chipper. A stick magnet can be used to retrieve them if this does occur.

5. Thoroughly clean all components paying particular attention to the seating surfaces. This is essential to ensure that the knives will seat and adjust correctly when re-installed. Replace the bolts if damaged or worn in any way.

6. Sharpen knives on a surface grinder at an angle of 36° Knife Installation and Adjustment, proceed as follows:

1. Position the knives into their mounting slots on the disc with the back against the adjusting screws; fit the clamping plate and 4 x M12 bolts. Only tighten the bolts enough to hold the knives in place during adjustment. NOTE: Be sure to replace the knives the correct way around (as shown in the diagram below).

2. Adjust the knives initially using the adjusting screws to protrude past the knife holding block. 3. Slowly and carefully rotate the disc and check that the clearance between the knife and anvil is

approximately 1.5mm on the inside closest to the bearing and 2.5mm on the outside edge of the rotor (as shown in the diagram below). The knives are tapered out slightly to allow for a small amount of flex in the rotor as it bites into the wood. If there is not enough clearance, the knife edge may touch the anvil through deflection when cutting heavy branches and damage the knife edge. Too much clearance will allow small twigs and fibrous material to drag through without being cut. NOTE: After sharpening, the width of the knives will have reduced, therefore the gap between the knives and anvil may require adjustment.

4. Adjust the knife in or out using the two adjusting screws to achieve a clearance between the knife and anvil as shown in the diagram below.

5. Fully tighten the knife holding bolts and tighten the locknuts on the adjusting screws. 6. Repeat the procedure for the second knife. 7. Turn the disc slowly by hand to ensure it turns freely and recheck the clearances, readjusting if

necessary. 8. Close and secure the discharge chute.

WARNING! Do not operate your chipper with blunt knives. This will cause excessive vibration which may result in damage to the machine.

7

Anvil Adjustment The anvil is hardened and reversible. Normally the edges will last for a long time. When both edges are worn the anvil should sharpened or replaced. To access the anvil the inlet chute needs to be removed.

With the knives removed or set right back, the gap between the knife mounting plate and anvil should be 4 – 5mm. The anvil can be adjusted through the mounting slots. When this has been set, tighten the four M10 countersunk anvil bolts and then make further adjustments with the knives as described above.

Belt Adjustment – Petrol powered model 1. With the machine stopped and the engine cooled down, remove the drive belt cover. 2. Engage the belts and check the tension as shown in the diagram below. When in the fully engaged

position there should be approximately 5mm deflection in the belt. 3. The belt tension can be adjusted by moving upwards the two M16 adjustment nuts below the

engagement swivel handle (as shown in the diagram below). If a belt change becomes necessary because the belts are worn out, or there is no adjustment remaining in the belt tensioner, disengage the belt drive, remove and replace the belts. The belt size is B46.

4. Once adjusted tighten the nuts to lock in place and refit the drive belt cover. Below: Belt adjustment diagram (engine removed for viewing)

Belt Adjustment – Tractor mounted, PTO driven model WARNING! Prior to starting any maintenance tasks on the PTO driven chipper, ensure the tractor is parked on a flat level surface with the park brakes applied, engine stopped, chipper placed firmly on the ground and the PTO drive shaft removed.

1. Remove the PTO drive shaft from the chipper and remove the drive belt cover. 2. Loosen the clamping and adjusting nuts. 3. Adjust the position of the idler using the adjusting nuts to achieve 10mm of deflection when the belts

are pushed with the fingers. If the belts require replacement, loosen the clamping and adjusting nuts and back the tension off far enough to allow removal of the belts, install new belts and tension. The belt size is B60. Tighten both nuts to lock the idler in position.

4. Tighten the clamping nuts to secure the adjustor. 5. Refit the drive belt cover and PTO shaft.
