After nearly fourteen years of writing articles for our newsletter, I
sometimes have a mental block of what to write. There are times over the
years when our administrative assistances are actually running the printing
when I am able to give my assigned spot an article to plug in. Sometimes I
sit and pray that the Lord will give me inspiration on a topic that will
speak His heart and open the hearts of those who read our newsletter to
know and understand what our ministries do in the Greater Hanover Area.
Tomorrow is printing day and here I am the night before writing my
article, trying to share with you what is in my heart and maybe share what
might also be in the heart of God.
Earlier today I learned of the passing of Mrs. Jean Smith – the driving
force and founder of the Provide-A-Lunch Ministry of the Hanover Area
Council of Churches. This was not the first ministry of the HACC, but
even today 35 years later it is probably the best known to the community
It’s a great day to be a Christian in the 21st century! I continue to be so thankful for the Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC), and its many volunteers, through which our various denominations come together to faithfully serve God and God’s people.
Some say that the church of today is irrelevant, but I’m here to tell you that those people couldn’t be more wrong! It is true that in recent years many of us have experienced a decline in church membership, but God is at work harder than ever in and through YOU because the Good News of the gospel is more vital today than it ever has been! It’s simply awesome that, while we all will continue to celebrate our respective histories and follow our own particular beliefs, we can come together to re-discover what Christ’s teachings means for our world today. Today is a time to boldly go where Christ leads us in proclaiming the gospel, in

of our many ministries. God was so good to us in establishing PAL; Miss Jean was very resourceful
and tapped every source of help to make this happen, and gave it guidance until she stepped down in
2000. However she was not done, in late 2003 she came back to give her expertise until a new
director could be found. That was when I had the privilege of meeting her. We worked together to
find a replacement for PAL, and she agreed to stay on to do some training. We found Fred Byler,
and Miss Jean trained him and gave him her phone number in Florida, where she was retiring. We
offer our sympathies to the Smith family.
We have been blessed with the leadership of PAL through the nearly 35years as well as the
faithfulness of the many volunteers who have been responsible for providing a meal served
everyday of the year from 11:30-12:30. We have from time to time had need to find a replacement
team, and are currently looking for a team for an opening on Tuesdays.
Our leadership is now under interim directors Sally Hershey and Bob Benscoter as Frank George
has suffered another stroke. We ask your prayers for Frank and Hazel George at this time and for
this ministry which has meant so much to our community. Our need is to restructure the
responsibilities of PAL so they are not burdensome to any one individual and so multiple sources
know how things are operating. Again pray for this ministry that the Lord who is faithful will send
the right people to us with servant’s hearts and a joy of giving.

connecting and serving God’s people, and in letting Jesus’ message of love be known in all facets of our lives and in the world.
As a volunteer at the Council of Church, YOU make a difference and I pray you are greatly fulfilled in the many ways that you serve. For those who are less active here, I invite you to come and join us and help to discover how we can together be more vibrant disciples of Christ, to make Christ known in Hanover and in our world, and to find new and innovative ways to serve God’s people in Jesus’ name! How to Donate Money Tax Free From Your IRA
Did you know that if you are 70 ½ you can have all or part of your Required Minimum
Distribution (RMD) made directly from your IRA to the Hanover Area Council of Churches
(HACC) (up to $100,000 per taxpayer per year) tax free? This law which affects Qualified
Charitable Distributions (QCDs) was made permanent in 2015.
This distribution is a convenient way to support Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC)
and get a federal tax break while meeting withdrawal requirements for your IRA. However,
you can’t also claim the qualified distribution to HACC as a charitable deduction. The
amount you donate is simply excluded from your taxable income (and your adjusted gross
income), which can be an advantage if you do not itemize deductions. If you do itemize
deductions this donation reduces your adjusted gross income for medical & dental expenses,
and miscellaneous deductions which are figured on a percentage of your adjusted gross
income.
To qualify the money needs to be transferred directly from your IRA to HACC in order to be
tax free. If you withdraw the money first and then give it to HACC, you can deduct the gift as
a charitable contribution (if you itemize), but the withdrawal amount will be included in your
adjusted gross income.
If you decide to make a contribution using the QCD, please inform HACC that such a
contribution is forthcoming, so HACC knows who the contribution is coming from and you
can give any instructions about which fund or program you want to support.
If you are interested in doing this contact your IRA administrator or financial/investment
advisor about the best way to proceed and call the council office 633-6353 for more
information.
FAITH AT WORK
We are part of the Hanover Area Council of Churches. We meet once a week, and make adult
clothing protectors, walker bags, lap robe covers, water bottle bags, and comfort care bags for veter-
ans (most goes go Lebanon Vally VA Hospital). We also make baby blankets, bibs and burp cloths
for Tender Care Pregnancy.
We are in need of supplies. We use mostly cotton and flannel in prints and solid colors. We do use
drapery weight material for walker bags. We also are in need of sewable velcro and 1/2-3/4 inch
gross grain ribbon. Any supplies or monetary donations would be appreciated. They can be dropped
off at the Council building 136 Carlisle Street, Hanover or at Grace UMC on Albright Drive.

October 15, 2017——“Registration begins at 12:30 pm;
with walkers stepping off at 1:00 following a prayer. Choose one of two town routes or walk the track. Walkers receive a thank-you gift at the end.”
The Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC) invites you to help raise funds for those in our area and around the world who are living in poverty and suffering from hunger. Last year the walk raised almost $16,000 with 25% of the funds allocated to feed the hungry in the Hanover area.
Some things you can do to help:
Sign up as a walker in your congregation. Ask your friends/family to sponsor you by making a donation to CWS/CROP.
Make a donation to one of the walkers/rockers who is representing your church on the day of the CROP Walk.
Remember our walkers, and the people they walk for, in your prayers on the day of the walk.

Founder’s Club Banquet at Cross Keys
Village - The Brethren Home Community
In 1983, a special dinner was held marking the
75th anniversary of “The Brethren Home” where
money was raised to purchase a grand piano for
the Meetinghouse. Since then, a special group of
supporters of the Church of the Brethren mission,
now known as Cross Keys Village-The Brethren
Home Community, have taken on an annual pro-
ject that will benefit residents of the community.
The special project chosen by the Founders Club
for 2017 has two components, providing benefits
to a variety of residents. A vehicle will be pur-
chased to replace the current “shuttle van” that is
used extensively on our campus. This vehicle pro-
vides services to many residents who are unable
to drive. In addition, funds will be used to pur-
chase a wheelchair scale to be used in our nursing
center. This will benefit many residents in our
Health Care Center, in particular those with con-
gestive heart failure issues who must be weighed
daily to detect weight gain due to fluid retention.
Your support of these very worthwhile projects
will be deeply appreciated.
Anyone who chooses to support the annual
project at an Associate, Founder or Benefactor
level is eligible to attend the annual celebration
dinner on Saturday, November 4. Our special
guest for the banquet is Todd Burpo, author of
the best-selling book “Heaven is for Real”. Due to
the incredible success of the book and the film
adaptation of the same name, Todd spends many
days on the road each year speaking to audiences
all over the world about the hope of heaven.
For more information on the Founder’s Club and
the banquet, call the Brethren Home Foundation
at 717-624-5208. Deadline to register to the ban-
quet is October 26.
