Hanmer Happenings

From the Principal’s Desk

January 2013 Dear Hanmer Families,

In the week before our holiday break, I thought so much about our

school community and how important it is to me. I am extremely

fortunate to be a part of this strong, caring Hanmer family and to

have a job that I truly love. Our teachers are committed and skilled,

our students are amazing and our families are strong, supportive

and engaged. It doesn’t get much better than that! I hope you all

enjoyed a relaxing vacation with your loved ones and are ready to

make 2013 another great year.

Many of you had the opportunity to come to Hanmer during the

Winter Concert and our town meeting to enjoy the talents of our

staff and students. Our music teachers, Kim Martin, Erik Stenson,

Jacob Voychick and Ted Griswold all did an outstanding job

directing Hanmer’s young musicians and singers and the students

performed beautifully. With the support of Lori Lemoine, our sixth

grade “town meeting crew” organized a terrific town meeting that

closed out the first half of our year. Special thanks to Becky

Weaver, Kim Martin and Jon Diaz for their roles in putting together

this whole-school gathering, as well.

In the next few months, there will be a number of opportunities for

you and your family to participate in a variety of events sponsored

by our PTO. In addition to having fun, your participation in these

activities reinforces the connection between home and school that

is so important to our success. Also, please join us at the upcoming

PTO meetings, if possible. We’ll discuss a variety of topics and

make plans for the remainder of the school year. If there are

specific topics you would like to see addressed at these meetings,

please let me know.

Finally, I want to wish you and your family and healthy and happy

New Year. As we move forward, if you have ideas, questions or

concerns to share, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Margaret Zacchei

Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope that everyone was

able to enjoy their winter break and are now rested and ready to get

back to work! It was great to see everyone at the Winter Concerts.

The buzz was that this was one of the best ever. Thank you to Mrs.

Martin for all of her hard work!

2013 is going to be a lot of fun at Hanmer School! We are planning a

trip to see the Connecticut Whale play hockey , a bus trip to the

Boston Children’s Museum and Faneuil Hall, our first annual Parent’s

Night Out at the community center with a live band, a New Britain

Rockcats game, BINGO night, Dinner and a Movie, pancake

breakfast and school fair, just to name a few. More information will be

sent home about each of these events.

Remember to keep clipping those boxtops and if you have not

registered your Stop & Shop Rewards card, there is still time. Go to

www.stopandshop.com/aplus and our school code is 07386. You can

also check our school total there and compare it to other schools.

Finally, we are planning on hosting a luncheon for the faculty in

January. We will be sending out requests for some food items.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us!

From the Health Room

Happy New Year!! I hope that you all had a wonderful winter holiday break and were able to spend time with family and friends. I’m sure many of you have made New Year’s resolutions to become healthier in 2013. This might include losing weight or exercising more. Why not make it part of your child’s new year also? We have all read about the increasingly alarming obesity rates for adults as well as children. What can we do to help ourselves while leading such busy lives? One thing that many of us turn to when we are busy is fast food. Fast food restaurants are finally offering some healthy food choices. If you must eat on the go, here are some ways to make fast food healthier.

Pass up the “value size”. When you supersize your drink and fries, you are adding more calories and may also add pounds.

Skip the French fries all together and order a salad or fruit instead. Try the grilled chicken which is leaner than the burger. Eat your sandwich open faced, which will save some calories by eliminating half the bun. Skip the mayo and other calorie heavy dressings and sauces. Drink water or diet soda and encourage your children to drink low fat milk.

Try an exercise program for the family. Get the kids moving! Take a

short walk together before or after dinner. It will not only be good exercise, it will be important time spent together.

Here’s to a Healthy New Year!!

Yale Whiffenpoofs will perform. With full houses on three past occasion, we welcome back one

of the world’s most renowned a cappela groups. Founded in 1909, the “Whiffs” have performed

all over the world and have been invited to sing at the White House, the Mormon Tabernacle in

Salt Lake, Carnegie Hall, the Rose Bowl and have also appeared on countless television shows

including “Saturday Night Live,” “Sixty Minutes” and NBC’s a capella competition, “The Sing

Off.” They still carry on the tradition of singing on Mondays at Mory’s Temple Bar and, of

course, still close their programs with the beloved “The Whiffenpoof Song.”

To purchase tickets or for more information please contact the Society at (860) 529-7656.

Concert Dates: January 20, February 10 & March 3, 2013. Doors open half hour prior to the

Arrivals and Dismissals Arrival:

As always, walkers should enter the school through the front doors off the blacktop. Bus students will enter the school through the doors by Mr. Bysko’s office. All adults must enter the building through the front doors off the blacktop. If you are at school to do anything more than drop off your child, you must sign in at the office and get a visitor’s badge.

During arrival and dismissal times, the front foyer will be a “Kids Only Zone.”

Dismissal:

If your child’s dismissal on a given day will differ from their normal routine (ie your child is being dismissed early for a doctor’s appointment or will be walking home with neighbors rather than taking the bus) please send in a note detailing the dismissal plans. Ideally, we’d like parents to use the bright green “Note to School” pad that was distributed through the PTO. If you don’t have one, please let us know!

We ask that anyone picking up a child at the end of the day wait outside until the child is dismissed with his or her class.

To eliminate potential confusion at the end of the day, please do not call the office after 3:00 to change your child’s dismissal plans except in the case of emergency.

Ways to Help Your Child with Writing: Tips from the National Council of Teachers of English (www.ncte.org) Here are some ways you can create a supportive environment at home that encourages writing development:

• Talk with your child about places you visit, work you do, books you read, or television programs you watch together. • Encourage your child to read, especially things he or she chooses, and let your child see you read. • Praise your child’s efforts at writing. Be primarily interested in content. Emphasize your child’s successes. For every error your child makes, there are a dozen things done well. Resist the tendency to focus only on errors of spelling, punctuation, and other mechanical parts of writing. • Provide a suitable place for your child to write--a flat surface, good light, a comfortable chair. • Give gifts (and encourage others to do the same for birthdays and special occasions) associated with writing: pens, pencils, pads of paper, stationery, a dictionary or thesaurus, erasers--even stamps. • Encourage your child to write request letters for information, free samples, travel brochures, etc. • Be alert to occasions when your child can be involved in writing. Writing for real purposes is rewarding, and the daily activities of families present many opportunities for purposeful writing (telephone messages or notes to family members).

Be sure to emphasize that writing is a part of every profession and it is a skill your child will use throughout his or her whole life!
