Whether “sugaring” trees or back-lighting a hanging bed sheet, it’s fascinating to attract moths and other nocturnal insects. Exhibits and handouts will help us become better acquainted with moths and ways to attract them. And if there are a lot of creatures to see, our leaders may be persuaded to stay around a little longer than 9:30. Leaders: Carol and David Southby, 383-8168 and Shirley Shaw, 385-3907.

Friday, August 28, 6:00 PM Potluck at BANC Sanctuary

AMAZING PLANTS AND THEIR TRAVELS There was a time when the earth was one landmass. Scientists named it Pangea during a 1927 symposium on the theory of continental drift. As the landmass broke apart to form the continents as we now know them, plants began a divergent course of evolution. In this slide presentation, Chris takes six common plants and traces their evolution through time and around the world. For example, you will learn why the culture of Ireland changed with the sinking a Spanish armada and how a bug from North America almost wiped out the vineyards of Europe. Hosts: Jutta Dudley, 385-2368 and Suzanne Wheatcraft, 738-4207.

Saturday, September 12, 10:00 AM Webster Park

FUNGI IN WEBSTER PARK

Mushroom expert Dave Wolf will lead us as we look for common and unusual fungi in Webster Park. Meet this fun guy at the Webster Park parking lot at Lake and Holt Roads in Webster at 10:00 AM. The outlet bridge is not open in September, so participants traveling from the west should take Rt. 104 eastbound to the Holt Rd. exit and drive north on Holt Rd. to the intersection with Lake Road. Bring a hand lens if you have one, so you can better see the identifying characteristics of the fungi. Leader: Dave Wolf, 482-2640.

Saturday, September 26, 4:00 PM BANC Sanctuary ANNUAL PICNIC

THE AUTUMN SKY Bring your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews at 4:00 to learn about the solar system with activities for all ages. The potluck begins at 5:30. Try to use local ingredients in your dish to share, and don’t forget your table settings. Bring a folding table and chairs if you can. We are fortunate to have Jackson Thomas as our guide to the autumn sky. Jackson regularly presents astronomical programs at the Thousand Acre Swamp Sanctuary of The Nature Conservancy and is also a resource for the Girl Scouts. For the past several years he has been a guide at the U of R’s Mees Observatory in the Bristol Hills. If sky conditions permit observing, we will view Saturn and its rings. Our time at the telescope will be spent primarily with deep-sky objects such as M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, whose distance from the earth is about 2.4 million light years and is the farthest object visible to the unaided eye. The concept of the sky as a time machine will be a pervasive topic throughout our observation. If weather conditions do not cooperate, Jackson will present an indoor slideshow on astronomy. Hosts: Marigrace Piazza, 383-8462 and Julie Clayton, 249-9489.

THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF ROCHESTER’S TWO MAJOR ARBORETA: HIGHLAND AND DURAND-EASTMAN PARKS

Beverly Gibson, Horticulturist from the Landmark Society, will detail the history of these wonderful parks and their plantings. Frederick Law Olmsted’s design for our park system and the men who made his design a reality are also discussed.

Saturday, October 24, 10:00 AM Thousand Acre Swamp

FALL FOLIAGE OF THE THOUSAND ACRE SWAMP

Basswood, ash, maple, dogwoods, spicebush and other trees and shrubs provide autumn color to this local preserve of The Nature Conservancy. We will meet our leader, tree expert Frank Crombe, in Thousand Acre Swamp’s parking lot, 1581 Jackson Road, Penfield. Look for the driveway just north of the Penfield Volunteer Ambulance base across from Penfield Center Road, north of Atlantic Ave. and south of Plank Rd. Be sure to wear long pants because of the poison ivy along the trails. Leader: Frank Crombe, 889-5644.

Saturday, November 7, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM BANC Sanctuary FALL CLEAN-UP

Now’s the time to clean and prepare the Sanctuary for winter. SANCTUARIES

Members are welcome to come often to our 30-acre Wildlife Sanctuary on Railroad Mills Road. It has been our pride and joy for almost 100 years. At any season its several nature trails offer much of interest and beauty and the bird feeders are always busy. One hundred and sixty five species of birds have been seen on or near our property and at least 50 of these are known to have nested here. More than 400 species of plants have been identified growing on our land. The Sanctuary is intended for the preservation and study of nature subjects. Let us all cooperate to preserve this valuable area. Our Elizabeth Slater Nature Sanctuary near Dansville is an 82-acre wooded upland property given to us by the late Floyd Slater in memory of his wife, Elizabeth. The property is located on the north side of Kiefer Hollow Rd., in the Town of Dansville, Steuben County.

THE NATURE TRAILS Our nature trails are maintained through the efforts of devoted and dedicated volunteers. The trail markers and plant labels represent much work and research. They are there for members to read and enjoy. Jot down what you see. Records of observations may be turned in at the regular meetings throughout the year.
