Dear Parents and Guardians,
Here are some of the upcoming events and reminders:
Due to low ticket sales, the HCSS Spaghetti Dinner and a Show has been cancelled.
Don’t forget that Q3 Finals continue this week! Below is the testing schedule:
o Wednesday, April 6th: Math Q3 Final, dismissal at 3:19pm
o Friday, April 8th: Science Q3 Final
o Tuesday, April 12th: Social Studies Q3 Final, dismissal at 3:19pm, no after school clubs or
tutoring
It’s Yearbook time again! If anyone has any pictures of clubs, activities, or even just pictures
with their friends, please send them to [email protected].
o Seniors should be sending their senior picture, baby picture and senior quote to this
email as well. All pictures must be turned in by Friday April 15th! No exceptions.
HCSS will be holding its first ever Poetry Month Competition! All submissions must be turned in
by Friday April 29th. A panel of judges will choose first, second, and third place poems from
Middle School and High School. If you have any questions or would like to submit a poem,
please contact Ms. Godard at [email protected]. Good Luck!
Mr. Borelli would like you to remind students and parents that they are NOT allowed to stay
after school past 4:45 unless they are involved in a sport. Siblings who have stayed after until
4:45 cannot wait to get picked up with their brother/sister when they are done at 6:15.
The next PTO Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 9th from 12:00-1:00 pm in the HCSS
Teacher’s Lounge. If your student attends Saturday School, this is a great opportunity to attend
a PTO Meeting! ALL ARE WELCOME!
Thank you for your support!

Dear Parent/Guardian,
From May 3,2016 trough June 2,2016 your child will be participating in the [MCAS or PARCC] test. This set
of tests measures how well your child has mastered the skills and content in math and English language arts at
his or her grade level and, in grades 8 and in high school, MCAS will measure how well your child has
mastered science and technology/engineering subjects. It is important to remember that these tests are aligned to
the instruction that takes place in the classroom every day and were developed with teacher input, so they are
consistent with the learning goals in each grade level.
The test has a variety of questions ranging from traditional multiple choice to those that require students to
provide and explain their answers. Teachers can use the results to provide more targeted supports or additional
challenges depending on your child’s needs.
The results from this test are not meant to tell the whole story. They are meant to be one of several measures
that illustrate how a student is progressing. Test scores should be used along with in-class performance, report
cards, and teacher reports to form a complete picture of a student’s achievement.
Sometimes families ask whether students are allowed to opt-out of taking a statewide test. In brief, the answer
is no. Testing is a mandatory part of the curriculum, the same as a spelling test or math test, and statewide
assessments are most useful when all students take them. Neither the state nor the district has an opt-out form.
We understand that students might refuse to take a test on their own or at their parents' suggestion or that
parents might write a letter refusing on behalf of their child, but we hope everyone understands that in such
cases, the school, the district, and the family would miss out on useful and important information about the
child's performance and achievement. If the student is in high school, the child would also miss an opportunity
to fulfill one of the high school graduation requirements.
For information about the specific dates and times when your child will take the test in each subject, see the
enclosed HCSS Academic Calendar. I also encourage you to take a look at sample questions at For MCAS, go
to http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/testitems.html and http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/. For PARCC, go to
http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/ and http://bealearninghero.org/classroom/parcc.]
In Hampden Charter School of Science, our goal is for every student to achieve his or her full potential. The
MCAS tests are just one way that we are able to better understand if we are meeting that goal. Thank you for
all you do to partner with us in your child’s education.
Thank you,
Harun Celik M.Ed.

for new fun ideas for this group and all are welcome to join.
Where: HCSS Meeting Room
When: Thursday 4/7/16
Time: 5th and 6th Period Recess
Students MUST report to class first, get the daily instruction, and only if urgent, ask the teacher if they can go to the Nurse. Students should not be going to the nurse without permission from the teacher AND nurse (teachers will call nurse before sending students). Students who do not follow procedures will be sent to class. Health Screenings have begun. Students in 7th & 10th Grades will be getting their vision, hearing, & BMI screens. Students in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 will get postural screens. No core class time will be missed. The student bathrooms have been left in poor conditions lately. There will be NO tolerance for fooling around in the bathrooms. Any students found damaging or dirtying the bathrooms will face
disciplinary actions. And remember the importance of washing your hands. The germs you contact in the restrooms can lead to serious illness. Students must wear appropriate uniform pants to school. If a student soils or damages their pants while in school, they must wear a loaned pair from the nurse, or have a new pair brought in from home. If you have no way to get pants from home you must start leaving an extra pair of pants in your locker. Sweatpants are not allowed in school unless in P.E. Students without appropriate uniforms will be sent to ASR until they have appropriate clothes to wear.

HCSS HONORS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Hampden Charter School of Science Honors Program is an educational choice that prepares students for the rigor of college work. Students will be presented with the discipline of Honors Classes along with enhanced learning experiences focusing on critical thinking skills, research work, experiential learning, and service learning.
The Honors Program incorporates high standards for teaching and learning that were developed specifically for this program. The program is designed for students who have demonstrated above average academic ability, motivation, and interest for further advanced post-secondary study and will prepare students for the challenge and rigor of college courses.
HCSS takes into account the difficulty of the Honors Courses and sets the weight of each Honors Course with 1.125 coefficient. Therefore, an Honors Course has more impact on the student’s GPA than a regular course. As an example, if a student gets “4.0” from the Honors Course, the student will have this course calculated as “4.5” towards his/her GPA.
Middle school students who are enrolled in Algebra 1 Honors will earn 2 (two) high school Algebra 1 credits if they achieve a B- (80%) or better grade for the year.
To enroll in the Honors Program for the first time
Students are required to earn a certain grade in the prerequisite course(s). Check the table below for
specific course requirements.
Note: Summer School classes do not qualify as a prerequisite course for Honors Courses.
Students must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 at the end of the third quarter.
Students must score at high proficient level or better on the previous year’s all state test(s).
Students must take the HCSS proficiency test and earn at least 80% or higher. Third quarter final
serves as the proficiency test.
Students must have recommendations from two different teachers including previous prerequisite
course teacher(s).
Students must have reasonable attendance and discipline records.
o Students must have five (5) unexcused absences at most at the end of the third quarter.
o Student should not have more than 50 discipline points in total by the end of the third quarter.
Students must sign the Honors Student Commitment Form.
Students must submit the Honors Course Application Form.
After evaluating each applicant, the administration will make the final decision.

HAMPDEN CHARTER SCHOOL OF SCIENCE MATH PATHWAYS
HCSS Enhanced Middle School and High School Math Courses:
Mathematics is one of the areas which United States has a high need for improvement. Standardized test scores and state tests with the implementation of
common core standards, raised the bar in terms of expectations. As HCSS, while implementing the common core standards in our math classes, we would like to
offer our students a rich math program where they can take their time to learn, practice and make sense of mathematics.
Our enhanced math program is designed to enrich student learning with technology integration, Project Based Learning experiences, enrichment activities, and
also more practice to give students the opportunity to learn the concepts in depth and go beyond the expectations. Students in enhanced math program have
double period of math everyday which lets us to integrate more activities and practice to reinforce student learning. Students in enhanced math program will
have the skills to make sense of mathematics, and be college and career ready in terms of math.

HCSS ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES
Overview and Benefits
That a high school student has taken challenging courses is one of the most important criteria in a
college application. By making the decision to take an AP course, a student is letting colleges and universities
know that s/he has what it takes to succeed in an undergraduate environment. AP courses signal to admissions
officers that you’ve undertaken the most rigorous classes your high school has to offer. Admissions teams see
that you have challenged yourself with college-level course work and expectations and have refined your skills
to meet those expectations. In the increasingly competitive admissions process, this knowledge can be very
valuable.
AP courses offer college admissions officers a consistent measure of course rigor across high schools,
districts, states, and countries — because all AP teachers, no matter where they are teaching, have to provide a
curriculum that meets college standards. When admissions officers see the “AP” label on your transcript, they
have a good understanding of what you studied and produced in that particular class and how well the course
prepared you for the increased challenges of college.
AP courses help students to increase their GPA. HCSS weighs the AP courses more heavily (1.25)
compared to typical courses (1.0) in an effort to reward students for taking challenging courses. How it works is
simply a B (3.0 GPA) is equivalent to an A (3.75 GPA) for an AP course.
As college costs grow each year, the prospect of continuing education becomes less and less of a reality
for many high school students. By completing an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam,
you can save on college expenses. Currently more than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the
country offer college credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying AP Exam scores. These credits can
potentially save students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition, fees, and textbook costs,
which can transform what once seemed unaffordable into something within reach.
You can see specific colleges’ guidelines on accepting AP scores for credit and placement by searching
our AP Credit Policy database. Here you can see how many credits your AP scores will earn you and which
courses you may be able to place out of at your future college.
Even if you’re not sure what you want to major in or if you take an AP exam unrelated to your major, AP
courses may help you place out of your colleges’ general education requirements. With this additional time in
your class schedule, you can pursue a second major or minor, take exciting electives, or follow additional
interests in new ways.

I will make all necessary arrangements to make sure my child participates in the extra study sessions
scheduled as necessary in addition to the regular school hours.

Advanced Placement Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the Advanced Placement program?
Advanced Placement is a 37 course program offered by the College Board. To read more, please
visit the College Board at www.collegeboard.com
Courses are taught at local high schools and allow students to participate in college level courses
and possibly earn college credit while still in high school. Most high schools and colleges participate
in this program to give students opportunities to earn college credit or advanced standing when they
begin post-secondary studies.
2. What is the difference between Advanced Placement and Dual-Enrollment Courses?
Both are rigorous college courses offered in the high school for high school and advanced study
credit, and preparation for higher learning.
Advanced Placement follows the College Boards guidelines in courses and study. There are 37
advanced placement courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, English, Computers, Music Theory,
and World Languages, that are offered with 22 exams. Credits are given in high school for a passed
course. College credits may be earned by submitting scores from the AP exams to the college of your
choice..
Dual-Enrollment is the opportunity for students to take college courses and high school courses at the
same time. The college credits count toward both high school graduation and your college transcript.
3. What are the advantages of taking an AP course?
AP courses prepare a student for college. Numerous studies show that students who have taken AP
classes demonstrate a higher level of success in college. Students also acquire academic skills and
an increase in self-confidence in preparation for college studies.
Students who take AP classes have the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. This not
only saves time and tuition, but if a student has accrued many college credits, it would also save on
room/board because of earlier college graduation.
4. How does an AP class differ from other high school courses?
AP classes are challenging and rigorous and aligned with university courses. They will require
more effort on the student’s behalf, so students should be motivated and willing to tackle this
challenge.
5. What background would I need in order to succeed in an AP course?
Previous academic success is necessary, with the ability to problem-solve, draw comparisons,
analyze, and reason. Reading abilities should support independent progress and perceptive thinking.
Proficient and clear writing skills are beneficial. The earlier students prepare for advanced placement
courses by enrolling and succeeding in other rigorous courses, the more likely they will experience
success in advanced placement.
6. What AP courses/exams are offered at HCSS?
For 2016-2017 School Year:
AP English Language and Composition
AP Biology
AP Calculus
AP Statistics
7. How much does it cost to take an AP course?
There is no cost for the course itself, but the fee for each AP Exam is $92. There is an opportunity for fee
reduction for each exam taken by eligible students. You need to talk to your counselor to find out if you
are eligible.
8. Will I receive college credit?
Each college determines the scores accepted for credit, but generally scores of at least 3 are awarded
credit. Colleges may award three or more credits per exam, so check with the college to which you are
submitting scores or applications.
9. How am I able to prepare for an AP course?
Preparation for AP classes should begin early. Enroll in honors courses or rigorous high school
courses in preparation for advanced placement. Reading and writing skills are essential for academic
success, and elective courses in these content areas would be beneficial. Parents should encourage
wise time management, strong study skills, efficient study atmosphere, and should communicate with
their child’s teachers and counselor.
10. How can I be sure the courses I take will prepare me for an AP course?
Many school districts have content area meetings periodically and create curriculum plans for students
to prepare for academic growth in their area. Teachers are encouraged to coordinate their classes and
assure they are preparing students for the next course in their content area. Training for teachers is
available throughout the year at the local, regional, and state level.
11. What is an AP exam?
The College Board’s assessment of the subject material for the AP course for which it coincides.
12. When are the AP exams administered?
AP exams are administered in May of each year and scores are sent in July.
13. What happens if I guess on a question on the AP exam?
Total scores on the multiple-choice section are based on the number of questions answered
correctly. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers and no points are awarded for unanswered
questions.
14. If I don’t score well on an AP exam, will I earn credit or will it affect my admission?
Since AP scores are not distributed until July of each year, if you are a senior, the chances are
that you have already applied for enrollment or been admitted. If you have taken an AP exam
your junior year, you may not have designated a university to receive the scores. You can always
choose to request that AP scores be sent to a college at a later date, after you review your AP
score(s), for a $15 fee from the College Board.
15. Can I use a calculator during an AP math or science exam?
Yes, only for the appropriate content areas, i.e. Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics, or
Statistics, and only in the designated sections of these exams. Please visit the College Board website
at: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exday_cal.html for the list of AP-authorized calculators.
16. I have a disability, may I request accommodations?
If you have a documented disability, you may be eligible for accommodations for AP exams. Please
see your counselor or your school’s AP Coordinator for more information.
17. How do I apply the credit in my AP exam towards my total units?
Check with your higher education institution college or university for details on credits. You must send
an exam report directly to your higher education institution (which report may be ordered at any time
after the examination) and credits will vary depending on scores and college policy.
18. Will the credits vary depending on a university or community college?
Most likely. Credits vary depending on each institution and their individual policies regarding scores,
exams, and core credit vs. elective credit. Check with your institution to see how your scores will be
translated in to credits.
19. Will my credits be applied towards my field of study or elective credit?
This will vary with each higher education institution.
20. What must I do on the exam day?
Get enough sleep the night before the exam. If you’re dull-headed because of a lack of sleep, you won’t
be able to perform at your best. Sleep a few extra hours instead of studying a few extra hours. Eat
moderately before your exams; avoid a heavy meal. If you eat too much, your brain will have to devote
energy to the process of digestion. Your body and your brain need water. Research has proven that
your brain performs more efficiently when well-hydrated. Drink enough water.
