Herington Quarry ReceivesGovernor’s Reclamation AwardHamm was proud to be awarded the 2019 Governor’s Mined Land Reclamation Award for its reclamation work on the 80-acre Herington Quarry surface mine. The quarry was in operation from 1980 to 2010 and nearly 1.5 million tons of limestone were produced from the location over that time. The landowner, Delbert Presslor, had a longtime vision of transforming the property into a sanctuary for native plants and wildlife. Hamm partnered with Mr. Presslor, the Depart-ment of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, and with the Wildlife Habitat Council to create and achieve this plan. The site is now established with rich vegetation, a bobcat sanctuary, two large ponds, and 10 acres of food plots with edible vegetation for the burgeoning wildlife population. Mr. Presslor unfortunately passed away in August of 2017. It was an honor to benefit the local com-munity sustainably and be a part of his legacy.

Buildex Invests inOperational ImprovementsBuildex, Hamm’s lightweight aggregate division, took on a large-scale process improvement project by adding a 1,700-foot conveyor to their plant site. This conveyor project replaced the lengthy process of transporting loaded material via dump truck from the pit to the storage site prior to being kiln fired. This saves approximately 65 gallons of diesel fuel per day in the loader alone and improves efficiency, safety, and quality control on-site.

Community PartnershipsCommunity engagement is an integral part of Hamm’s operations. On Friday afternoons, employees can be found volunteering at the Topeka Rescue Mission. Construction materials were also donated to the St. Jude’s Dream Home Giveaway in Topeka, with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Hamm offers tours of its facilities to the local community, and has provided tours to members of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and KU Environmental Students.

Recycling & ReturnsThe Material Recovery Facility (MRF) returns what would have been landfilled trash back to markets around the world, and helps Lawrence, Kansas residents create a more sustainable future for their communities.
