Each day people of all ages pass through the doors of our six hospitals and cancer centre, and each day we are grateful for the donors, staff and volunteers who help us transform the lives of those very same people.

The art of caring is evident throughout our sites as a broad spectrum of people give tirelessly of themselves, from the front-line health care workers to a broad community of volunteers and donors, and of course our Foundation staff. Each offers something unique that collectively allows us to build a stronger Foundation and offer support to so many people across our region. For each and every one, we are truly grateful.

It was a transformational year as we completed the development of our five-year strategic plan along with a supporting one-year fundraising and business plan. It was also a year in which we celebrated significant milestones, such as the opening of the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute and the first phase of Juravinski Hospital. Both of these openings paid tribute to individuals, corporations and foundations whose dedication and commitment to health care in this region were instrumental in our success and for whom we are truly appreciative.

This year’s annual report reflects the themes that unite us as Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, while also showcasing the many unique aspects of the individual sites that we support. Together, we are pleased to report that we raised $21.6 million before investment income and subsequently disbursed more than $8.2 million in support of patient programs and amenities, equipment, research, education and renovations.

Our Board and Fundraising Councils are an integral part of the Foundation structure and we are very appreciative of their dedication and commitment. We would like to thank Board Members: John Bukovac, Ken Leendertse, Kim Mason and Virginia McKenna for their service on the Board. Each made a tremendous contribution on behalf of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation and in the case of John, Ken and Kim their respective Councils. We extend a very special thank you

to Virginia McKenna who worked tirelessly throughout our successful amalgamations to ensure that we built a strong foundation of Board Governance. We are also appreciative of the efforts of departing Council members: Vickie Baird, Larry Culver, Steve Howse, Duncan Gillespie, Ken Leendertse and Peter Tekker for their commitment to the Foundation.

We would also like to pay special tribute to Don Pether for his leadership from June 2007 to March 2010, as Board Chair during the formative years for the new Foundation. His contributions as we worked through some of the most challenging years in the Foundation’s history are truly appreciated.

In 2010, there were also changes in the leadership at two of the sites we support. We extend a very special thank you to Charlotte Daniels for her 36 years at Hamilton General Hospital, and to Donna Cripps for her 20 years at St. Peter’s Hospital. They have both been tremendous advocates and supporters of the Foundation and we wish them well as they each embark on new chapters in their lives. We were also pleased to welcome Teresa Smith as Integrated Vice President, Patient Services for Hamilton Health Sciences and Site Lead for Hamilton General Hospital and Rebecca Repa as President, St. Peter’s Hospital. We look forward to a wonderfully collaborative relationship and we are already benefitting from their contributions to their respective Councils.

During the year we welcomed two new dynamic Board Members, Mark Hunter and Barry Guest. Mark is a Partner with Brownlow Partners, Chartered Accountants and is also the new Vice Chair of the Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Fundraising Council. Barry Guest is Vice President Marketing and General Manager with Blockbuster Canada and energetically stepped into the leadership role of the McMaster Children’s Fundraising Council and consequently the Board as well.

To all of our volunteers, donors and staff, thank you for helping us to succeed in 2010.

Three years ago, Hamilton Health Sciences embarked on an ambitious plan that would redefine the role of our hospital sites and ensure the best outcomes for patients. With input from the community, physicians, staff and our health care partners, we focused on three things that matter to everyone who uses our services – access, quality and sustainability. This means better organizing services, in new purpose-built facilities, to deliver the right kind of care to the people of this city and region.

In 2010, we achieved many milestones as part of our plan, including the opening of the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute in March. The opening of this Institute amplified Hamilton’s role as a world leading centre for cardiac, vascular and stroke research. The building is named after David Braley who was pleased to support a research institute that impacts the health of people in the city and around the world.

In August, we were excited to open Phase 1A of the Juravinski Hospital and to honour Charles and Margaret Juravinski for their tremendous generosity. We all owe this remarkable couple a great deal of gratitude for their incredible contribution to health care across our region. Also celebrated as part of the opening was one of the first major Access to the Best Care-related service transfers; the consolidation of the hematology/oncology units into one centre of excellence at the Juravinski. The completion of this phase of the redevelopment has enabled other projects to move forward, including construction of the new pediatric emergency department at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

While Hamilton Health Sciences is a leader in innovation and quality care, it is also clear that accomplishments do not happen in isolation. Much of what we were able to celebrate in 2010 was a direct result of the financial support we received from individuals, corporations and community partners, who are committed to investing in the future of health care. On behalf of Hamilton Health Sciences, thank you for your confidence and support.

About This Year’s Theme – The Art of Caring

The science of caring is integral to the health needs of our patients, however, it is the art of caring that helps to meet the emotional needs of most patients and their families. They remember the helpful hands of a volunteer, physician or health professional; or the smile or hug that brightened a day.

There are so many different ways that the true art of caring is demonstrated at each of our sites, and we have chosen to highlight two physical examples of that emotional connection through the cover of this year’s donor report.

In the oil painting “To Dance” the children are expressing their innocence, joy and wonderment through dance. Anna Sponer, the Hamilton-born artist, portrays the sense that the struggle for life can often become a celebration of life. Generously donated to McMaster Children’s Hospital, this painting portrays the emotion behind what we wish for every child in our care.

Hamilton’s role as one of the world’s leading research centres was amplified on March 11, 2010 with the grand opening of the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute at Hamilton General Hospital.

The six-storey building, named in recognition of the transformational $10-million gift made by Senator David Braley, includes 200,000 square feet of new research space, laboratories, meeting rooms, offices and breakout spaces. The facility also houses Canada’s largest biobank, which stores more than 1.8 million tissue and genetic research samples from approximately 250,000 participants from around the globe.

“I am very pleased to support research at this fine institution as it impacts the health of people in this city and around the world,” said Senator Braley, who in June was the recipient of a 2010 Cornerstone Award for his commitment and contributions to health care.

The Research Institute is home to two world-renowned research teams - the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) led by Executive Director Dr. Salim Yusuf, and the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI) led by Director Dr. Jeffrey Weitz. Working side-by-side for the first time, these two teams will be able to share ideas and knowledge that will improve the health of millions of people around the world.

The 2010 Hamilton Health Sciences Gala, Bollywood Circus, took place February 20th and raised over $213,000 in support of new research initiatives at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Research is as fundamental to our hospitals as patient care and education. Funds raised at the Gala supports many vital research initiatives. One of these initiatives is the New Investigator Fund that was established to foster and support a culture of inquiry for researchers early in their careers. Two investigators were highlighted at the 2010 Gala; Dr. Jennie Johnstone and Dr. Guillaume Paré. The work they are doing today is focused on enhancing patient outcomes in the fields of stroke and influenza. This program has awarded more than $4.5 million to 261 researchers at Hamilton Health Sciences.

The evening also paid special tribute to Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, Director of the McMaster Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) and Scotiabank Chair in Child Health Research. He is an internationally recognized physician who has dedicated his career to increasing the capabilities and achievements of children with disabilities. His work examines how certain interventions and recommendations to families play a role in a child’s development. He focuses on the role of the family in a child’s development as well as the impact that a child’s chronic condition can have on parents.

Donations designated for research make it possible for the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation to fund important research and educational initiatives. In 2010, the Foundation provided more than $500,000 in grants to 21 staff and researchers at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, including the world-leading research of Dr. Theos Tsakiridis.

During the past few years, with support funding from the Foundation, Dr. Tsakiridis and his team have pursued studies that investigated the potential of Lovastatin, a widely used anti-cholesterol agent, to enhance the toxic effects of radiation on non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Given lung cancer’s treatment-failure rates of up to 85 per cent due to its resistance to radiation, there is

an urgent need to develop new agents that improve patient outcomes.

Recently, Dr. Tsakiridis completed pre-clinical studies, which show the drug sensitizes these cancer cells to radiation, work that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology. Thanks to a $25,000 research grant approved in 2010, Dr.Tsakiridis will have the necessary funding to complete his pre-clinical investigation of Lovostatin as a radiosensitizer.

If successful, this important study will serve as an essential step in the development of this agent as a promising new treatment and allow for its use in early phase clinical trials in patients with lung cancer.

Following the completion of the first phase of construction, the new Juravinski Hospital officially opened its doors on August 3rd.

Made possible thanks to significant provincial funding and the support of thousands of donors, including a multi-million gift from Margaret and Charles Juravinski, the redevelopment has significantly increased the Hospital’s overall capacity and enabled enhanced inpatient support for the Cancer Centre and Orthopedic programs.

“Margaret and I are honoured to be here today to see the realization of this magnificent new facility,” said Charles Juravinski. “When we made the decision to donate to health care, we knew its impact would help those from all walks of life – we are excited by the opportunity to touch so many lives by committing to support the most basic human need.”

This beautiful, state-of-the-art facility features a 60 percent larger emergency department, expanded Intensive Care and Diagnostic Imaging units, as well as nine new operating rooms and a cancer therapy suite.

To ensure a more comfortable stay, the Hospital’s 90 spacious, new patient rooms were each designed and equipped to meet specific needs. These bright and inviting spaces feature large windows with picturesque views of the Hamilton skyline and provide additional privacy, ample seating for loved ones and more room for patients in wheelchairs.

Construction on the remaining phases of the project continues, as do efforts to fund the equipment in the recently opened units. Once completed, the redevelopment will rank as one of Hamilton Health Sciences’ largest ever hospital building projects.

In appreciation for Ralph and Eileen Connor’s generous donations, St. Peter’s has named all three courtyards in the Alexander Pavilion The Connor Courtyards. The courtyards are areas in which patients can freely access the fresh air and gardens in the Alexander Pavilion. The heated pathways ensure patients stay safe so that they can enjoy the courtyards year-round.

Eileen’s mother had Alzheimer’s and she has vivid memories of the lack of care available for her mother so she really appreciates the value of the care that patients receive in the Alexander Pavilion and recognize how far care has progressed since her mother was ill.

Their long-standing history with the Hospital also made St. Peter’s a natural place to give. As a lifelong resident of Hamilton, and owner of Connor Insurance, Ralph indicated that “we decided it was time to share our success with our fellow community members. We don’t consider ourselves wealthy but we have enough for ourselves plus a little extra to help others.”

The Connors continue to support both research and the greatest needs within the Alexander Pavilion and through their generosity they are making a difference for patients who otherwise might not have the ability to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.

Martin and Christine LaPointe from Brantford know Mac Kids well. Their daughter, Charlotte, received care at the hospital multiple times in her young life including surgery and a trip to Mac Kids’ emergency department with gastroenteritis. Thanks to the excellent care this young family received, they have made gifts of stock to Mac Kids every year since 2006.

In 2010, the couple also made a generous $50,000 pledge gift towards the purchase of much needed Emergency Department equipment. Their gift will have a profound impact on the level of care we can provide to thousands of children every year. By matching our equipment with the expertise of our medical staff, children will receive the most accurate, timely, and non-invasive treatment available.

Gift of Stocks, an Alternative to traditional DonationsMembers of the Adrian Yaffe Society

celebrated a milestone at its first annual reception event on September 28th. Thanks to the generous support of its Members, the Society announced it had raised more than $200,000; these funds supported the purchase of two new three-dimensional echocardiography machines for the Hospital.

In addition to announcing the equipment purchase, the Society’s Advisory Committee used the opportunity to recognize Founding Members for

their significant contributions and ongoing support. This diverse group of community members, physicians and senior hospital leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the Society’s successful launch.

Members in attendance were treated to a first-hand demonstration showing the capabilities of the new 3-D machine by Dr. Hisham Dokainish, Director of Echocardiography at Hamilton General Hospital. With access to this advanced technology, Hospital physicians can now more accurately image the walls and internal valves of a beating heart, leading to improved diagnoses for the thousands of cardiac patients treated at the General each year.

The Society, which honours the legacy of Dr. Adrian Yaffe, a medical pioneer who contributed so much to advancing the field of cardiac care and research, supports priority equipment purchases for the Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke program at Hamilton General.

For 16 weeks in 2010, artist Diane Beatty-Wearing conducted an art class for the patients of the Alexander Pavilion at St. Peter’s. Eight patients were actively involved and many others were art patrons and supported the group. Patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia often have deteriorating verbal skills and may find it difficult to express themselves. Confusion and high emotions are sometimes apparent with these illnesses. Although art does not eliminate these symptoms, it does provide an outlet for their emotions. Through art these patients have a vehicle for communication, friendship and enjoyment. It connects with the spirit and can enhance the lives of patients. Donations to the Foundation enabled us to fund this therapeutic program that was designed to provide insights into our patients’ lives so that the quality of care and life for our patients could be enhanced.

EvEry Gift Counts

Providing the best in health care takes an entire community of loyal supporters including more than 47,000 donors which includes more than 3,600 monthly donors.

Monthly giving is a convenient way to make ongoing donations. It allows individuals to make a larger gift that is spread over the entire year. This provides the Foundation with a stream of predictable and ongoing gifts and enables essential equipment purchases.

In 2002, Mr. Birkett joined our monthly giving program. He says, “It’s a Canadian idea that you give back for what you’re receiving. I’m giving back for the care that I’ve been given. The hospitals and cancer centre have expenses throughout the year and monthly giving allows me to support Hamilton Health Sciences all year. A credit card is an easy way to give monthly.”

A memorial gift does more than honour a life and send condolences to a bereaved family. It makes a difference for other patients now and in the future. Memorial gifts are used to support equipment purchases, staff education, redevelopment of our facilities and research. Remembering and honouring friends and loved ones is a meaningful and lasting way to directly enhance care.

Whether you choose to honour the life of someone dear to you, celebrate a special occasion or become a member of one of our Monthly Giving Clubs, your donation improves the lives of others.

Details on monthly and memorial giving can be found at:

Every Gift Counts

No one wants to be in the hospital being treated for cancer, but having the right space, the right equipment and the right people can make all the difference in the world. The Calbeck family support this belief, making a generous pledge of $25,000. This major gift will cover the costs of furnishing an Oncology inpatient room to be dedicated in the Family’s honour.

“People lose sight of the fact that this state-of-the-art facility is still in need of donor support to ensure top-quality care for patients,” said Lance Calbeck. “We decided to give because of the long history my family has with the cancer program here. My parents, Joanne and Jack, were both treated at the Cancer Centre

before their passing, so we understand its regional importance.

The Calbecks have been longtime Foundation supporters with a donation history dating back more than 10 years, including several gifts made through the Joanne Calbeck Memorial Foundation.

Mac Kids Miracle Weekend is intended to raise awareness of the work of Mac Kids, to recognize the contribution of donors and to encourage the community to financially support Mac Kids. In previous years this was accomplished through a live telethon. In June 2010, the show took on a new format as CHCH TV showcased the hospital’s achievements by interviewing over 30 patients, doctors and families during its live news segments throughout the entire day on Friday.

In conjunction with the live broadcasts an emotional 90-minute documentary called Mac Kids Presents: ‘Miracles Big and Small’ was produced. The documentary aired multiple times throughout the weekend and conveyed heart-wrenching stories of the struggles and triumphs that the staff, patients and families at Mac Kids experience every day.

Patients feel the impact of Miracle Weekend every day as this event is the culmination and celebration of a year’s worth of giving. We opened up different channels for giving in the 2010 broadcast including online and mobile giving which represented 25 percent of the donations received over that weekend.

We are very grateful to all of our donors and partners who enable the Miracle Weekend production including our print media partner, The Hamilton Spectator and broadcast partner, CHCH TV.

Scotiabank’s commitment and dedication to the children in our community, region and around the world was solidified in 2010, with the completion of their multi-year funding commitment for the Scotiabank Chair in Child Health Research at the McMaster Children Health Research Institute (MCHRI) within McMaster Children’s Hospital.

MCHRI brings together scientific leaders who are at the forefront of child development research in Canada. Under the leadership of Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, Director of the MCHRI, and holder of the Scotiabank Chair in Child Health Research, researchers have made great strides in better understanding autism, obesity, childhood cancers, and neuromuscular diseases.

Many chronic diseases and disabilities share common elements. They all affect how a child develops, interacts with their family and loved ones, participates in the community and achieves success in school. By working together and sharing knowledge,

researchers at MCHRI are discovering new ways of helping children and their families to thrive.

In addition to this tremendous commitment, Scotiabank and Scotiabankers enabled our investment in new child-appropriate equipment in the 30-year old Ophthalmology Unit. These gifts are just the latest in a legacy of giving that goes back more than 18 years at both the corporate and branch level through the annual “Smiles for Mac Kids Campaign”.

This commitment is built on a tradition of philanthropy that is focused on the future health, strength and prosperity of children in south-central Ontario. Scotiabank’s support has made a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of children in this region as their collective gifts have touched so many areas of care.

The Care4 cause marketing program was launched with initial support from Hamilton-based Mabel’s Labels and Burlington-based Glam Julz. As consumers respond and reward companies that support causes in which they believe, the Care4 program translates into a triple-win scenario. The consumer feels good about part of their funds going back to charity and in particular a cause they support. The partner wins through increased loyalty and attracting new customers while demonstrating a commitment to corporate social responsibility; and our Foundation wins as we receive new contributions and raise awareness of the work being performed at our sites.

On April 24, Origin and Cause Inc.’s charity committee hosted the “Swing into Spring” charity dinner dance at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, Ontario. The event, attended by the company’s clients, raised $11,500 for the regional Burn and Trauma Units at Hamilton General Hospital.

The Ancaster company, which specializes in determining the cause of fires using

forensic evidence, has become a strong advocate for improved patient care at the Hospital. In addition to hosting the dinner, Origin and Cause has organized BBQ fundraisers and a charity golf tournament in support of the two Units, which serve a population base of 2.3 million people across south-central Ontario.

Shortly after immigrating to Canada in 1953, Rudolf and Frieda Denninger established their first store on King Street in Hamilton. Over the decades, new stores were added, as was a manufacturing plant and warehouse. Soon Denninger’s became an integral part of specialty food shopping in Burlington, Oakville, and Stoney Creek.

While employing almost 300 people across Southern Ontario keeps them busy, the Denninger family, now in its third generation, are also very philanthropic and believe in giving back to their community. Herta Denninger, current owner of Denninger’s and daughter of Rudolf and Frieda has a strong connection to St. Peter’s Hospital. “My father Rudolf was a patient at St. Peter’s,” says Herta. “The

Hospital was so much a part of our lives, we want to do all we can to raise awareness about this terrific resource we have right here in our own community. Collectively as a community, we need to ensure we provide support so the resources will be there for us to rely on when we need them.”

Each winter, Denninger’s hosts a Christmas Market Fundraiser and Open House in support of St. Peter’s Hospital. Customers brave the cold weather to attend the market which offers an extensive variety of specialty foods and they are able to enjoy the music offered by local community groups. This event has run for many years. Denninger’s support, and the support of their customers, makes a difference in the lives of St. Peter’s patients.

Nothing could be more devastating for new parents than learning that your baby has a life threatening condition. Parents Bruce and Nicole had to endure that news upon the birth of their baby girl, Jasmine, who was born with a genetic condition. Jasmine has Neurofibromatosis type 1 which is characterized by the growth of tumours as well as changes in skin colouring. Overwhelmed by emotion, Bruce and Nicole were told Jasmine needed the expertise of multiple care providers at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

It was Mac Kids’ Ophthalmologist Dr. Sabri who first spotted Jasmine’s tumour after she had been experiencing reduced vision in her left eye. Often the eyes will identify problems with the brain before other symptoms are noticed.

An urgent Cat Scan revealed devastating news, Jasmine had tumours growing on the optic nerves behind both of her eyes. “All my dreams for my little girl’s future were now so uncertain,” said Nicole. The tumours had caused irreversible damage to the vision in her one eye; but thanks to the early diagnosis, there was still time to intervene before Jasmine lost vision in her right eye as well.

Jasmine is undergoing chemotherapy treatment to stop the cancerous tumours from growing and threatening her vision further. She still has ongoing appointments with Genetics and Ophthalmology and uses glasses and patching techniques to strengthen her remaining vision. The Mac Kids healthcare team will continue to monitor Jasmine closely throughout her childhood. Timely diagnosis and early intervention at Mac Kids saved the sight in Jasmine’s one eye, and quite possibly, her life.

Beautiful weather, scrumptious food, and great golfing all in support of a world-class children’s hospital. These wonderful elements all came together at the third Annual Ron Joyce Invitational for Mac Kids this past August. The tournament, wrapped up its three-year term being hosted by Mr. Joyce at the beautiful Fox Harb’r Golf Resort & Spa in Nova Scotia, raising more than $1.1 million.Funds from the tournament were designated primarily toward McMaster Children’s Hospital’s leading childhood obesity research and treatment program. Other areas that benefited from the tournament, included the Neuromuscular and Neurometabolic Program as well as ongoing facility and equipment improvements. A huge thank you to all involved with the event – you have enabled us to continue our mission of child health, transformed.

The Hamilton District Society for Disabled Children is one of our treasured champions having donated $100,000 in 2010. They have a rich history of supporting the Children’s Developmental Rehabilitation program (CDRP) at Mac Kids which is one of eight teams that form part of the Developmental Rehabilitation Services. This program provides outpatient services to children with congenital or acquired neurological, development and/or multiple disabilities.

T h e H a m i l t o n D i s t r i c t Society’s significant investment in programs, services and equipment has helped to transform the lives and improve the well-being of thousands of children and families.

In o rder to p rov ide the best possible care, we must continually invest in equipment

used by our medical teams, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of technology. The majority of therapy for children with physical disability relies on specially designed equipment. Enabled by this d o n a t i o n , w e p u r c h a s e d equipment such as a Proxtalker which is a voice output device used to help assess patients and train children to use more technolog ica l ly advanced augmentative communication devices. Each year Mac Kids works with corporate partners on a number of exciting annual initiatives. Some highlights from 2010 include:

The Champions presented by Walmart is a program honouring remarkable children who have triumphed despite medical challenges. Our 2010 Champion was Dustin Berry who overcame a devastating brain tumour. In his role, he traveled to Ottawa and Orlando to share the message that he is alive because of Mac Kids.

Astral Media’s National Day of Caring Radiothon took place in April from the hospital lobby. When stories of how Mac Kids made a difference in the lives of its patients and their families were broadcast, listeners were encouraged to sign-up for the monthly giving program.

TD Canada Trust encouraged customers in the region to support Mac Kids through automated monthly donations during their fundraising program. TD matches up to $1 million of their customer’s donations each year to give to children’s hospitals across Canada.

While on vacation in Northern Ontario, Hamilton resident Dave Zelinski had a stroke.

“Not knowing what’s wrong with you is a terrifying feeling,” says Dave. “One day I was out relaxing on the lake fishing and the next day, I was having trouble speaking. A few hours later I couldn’t speak at all and my wife noticed that my face had dropped on one side.”

Dave’s wife rushed him to the local hospital where doctors confirmed he had suffered a stroke. As the hospital was not equipped to deal with stroke patients, Dave was air-lifted to Hamilton General Hospital for urgent treatment in the Regional Stroke Program.

Though doctors were able to quickly restore blood flow to the affected area of his brain, Dave would spend the next two weeks recovering at The General. During that time, doctors monitored his progress 24 hours a day to ensure he did not suffer another stroke and Dave worked with physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists to help him regain function.

“You can’t prepare for things like this, they happen unexpectedly. The best thing you can hope for is expert help to tell you what’s wrong and make you better.”

Thanks to the specialized interventional care he received upon arriving at The General and work of the dedicated staff in the Hospital’s Stroke Rehabilitation Program, Dave has made a full recovery.

“I’m so grateful to have an elite centre like Hamilton General Hospital right here in my community. The staff at The General saved my life and, thanks to them, I am around to provide for my family and see my kids grow up.”

The 19th annual Open Heart Open took place at Sundrim Golf Course in Caledonia on August 25th. Approximately 140 golfers participated in the tournament, which has raised over $750,000 since its debut in 1992. Each year, proceeds are directed to the Heart Fund to help secure priority equipment and support cardiac programs at The General.

Special thanks go to Dale Hails and family for their incredible leadership over the years and to the entire Open Heart Open planning committee for their hard work and dedication. We also wish to thank Boston Scientific for their multi-year commitment as the sponsor.

The 2nd annual Walk of Life was held at Bayfront Park on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The 6 km walk was organized by staff at Hamilton General Hospital to help raise awareness and the necessary funds to replace the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre’s aging fitness equipment.

The event attracted more than 180 participants and raised $33,000 for the purchase of new exercise bikes, a treadmill, weigh scale, cooling fans and a sound system for the Centre. This modern equipment will greatly benefit patients recovering from heart attack, bypass surgery and other cardiovascular issues.

As the Regional Centre of Excellence for cardiovascular health, trauma, neurosciences, and stroke care, timely access to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans is integral to the quality of care provided at Hamilton General Hospital. With the Hospital’s existing MRI operating at maximum capacity, the addition of a second unit is urgently needed to reduce wait times for scans, which are currently the longest in the region. In October, the Ontario government announced it would fund additional

hours for a second MRI at the site. The announcement however, leaves a significant funding gap in terms of capital equipment and infrastructure dollars to purchase and install the new machine.

Focused on delivering top-quality health care throughout the region, Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation has committed to raising $1-million and will direct another $1-million in previously secured funds to support this high-priority equipment purchase.

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes at one of the country’s leading health care and research centres?

Hamilton General Hospital’s A Closer Look event, which took place on November 16, gave a select group of donors a sneak peek at life in some of the Hospital’s most restricted areas and a chance to see first-hand how their support impacts patient care.

Those in attendance were treated to a live demonstration of the coiling of a brain aneurysm. Other donors were taken on an in-depth tour of either the Neuro Interventional Suite, a Cardiac Operating Room, or the Experimental Thrombosis Lab at the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute.

Legacy Circle Members

The Legacy Circle honours people who share a commitment to the future of health care. As such, individuals that have notified Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation of a gift through their estate plans are invited to be members. We are truly grateful for the more than 200 legacy gifts that have been shared in the form of bequests, life insurance policies, charitable

gift annuities, RRSP’s/RRIF’s and securities. Respectfully many donors wish to remain anonymous. Those who granted permission to be recognized as members are listed below. To learn more about membership, please contact our Legacy Giving Officers or go to:

We are grateful to the individuals listed who designated a legacy gift to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as part of their estate. Through their careful planning and consideration we realized these gifts in 2010 and are honoured to acknowledge that their generosity serves to create a lasting impact.

“My family and i couldn’t be happier that my legacy will provide hhS with the resources needed to keep up with the latest technology, invest in important research and train new health care professionals to continue to provide the best compassionate care when our community needs it most - now and in the future.” – Johann Keays

When Anthony Moccio found out he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia, it was not news he was expecting. The rare blood cancer was picked up by his doctor after blood-work from a routine check-up showed an unusually low white blood cell count.

“I was completely blown away,” says Anthony. “I felt like I was in perfect health, but was being told I had a disease that had only a 50 per cent survival rate for someone my age.”

Requiring highly specialized care that was not available in his home town of Niagara Falls, Anthony was referred to the Hematology Unit at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre for treatment. Though doctors were successful at bringing the aggressive disease under control using a series of high-dose chemotherapy treatments to induce remission, Anthony suffered a relapse less than a year later, leaving a bone marrow transplant as his best chance at survival.

As an exact donor match could not be found, Anthony underwent a haploidentical transplant using bone marrow from his brother Matthew, who was a half match. To bolster his weakened immune system, Anthony later received an infusion of manipulated immune cells from his brother, the first time such a procedure had been performed in Hamilton. The trial procedure isolated select cells that were best matched to Anthony, reducing the chance of graft-versus-host disease.

“When something like this happens people want to help, but aren’t always sure how. When my brother found out he could be my donor he was elated, because it was a specific way he could make a difference.”

Following the successful transplant, which took place in December 2010, Anthony is doing well and is hitting milestones in his recovery.

Moved by the passion and dedication of the staff at the Hospital, particularly the nurses, with whom he formed a close bond during his hundreds of days spent as an in-patient, Anthony made a donation to the Nursing Education Fund.

“I am extremely grateful for the care that I have received, it was important for me to give back and help provide hope for others.”

On May 8, Latin Fiesta, the 9th Annual Hummingbird Ball, was held at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Once again, the evening was a huge success, raising approximately $100,000 in support of the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre. More than 400 guests attended the gala, enjoying the elegant Latin inspired menu, entertainment and décor. The event recognized the contributions of two incredible groups dedicated to improving the overall quality of care for patients with cancer. Honoured that night were the Zonta Club of Hamilton 1 for their commitment to raising funds in support of the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre and a group comprised of several Hamilton Health Sciences groups including the Oncology Unit Staff, Palliative Care Team of Physicians and Advanced Practice Nurses; JCC Supportive Care Staff and HHS Decision Support Team of the Juravinski Cancer Centre who were recipients of Cancer Care Ontario’s Quality and Innovation Award.

Hummingbird Ball

People give for different reasons. For some, it’s the personal satisfaction that comes from the act of giving itself while for others it is a way to show appreciation for the care that they, or a loved-one, has received.Marianne had been a loyal supporter of Hamilton Health Sciences since the death of her husband

John in 1986, making a series of increasingly large gifts to the Foundation in recognition of the care she and her husband had received over the years.Born in Poland in 1923, Marianne emigrated to Canada with her husband, a Polish army veteran, following the second world war. The couple settled in Hamilton and on modest incomes bought a small home downtown and built a life together. Though the couple never had children of their own,

Marianne loved children and included in her more than 50 donations were numerous gifts to McMaster Children’s Hospital. The Hospital needed her support, she said, because oftentimes young families don’t have the means to give at higher levels.

In 2005 Marianne was diagnosed with breast cancer and following her treatment made a major gift to the Juravinski Cancer Centre in gratitude of the care she received as a patient.

Sadly, Marianne’s cancer returned four years later and, at the age of 86, was unable to fight off the disease a second time. As a testament to her dedication to healthcare across the region Mariane left a legacy gift in her will that was received by the Foundation in 2010. Her generous donation was shared, as she wished, between the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Hamilton General Hospital and McMaster Children’s Hospital.

Through her gift, Marianne’s legacy lives on, and it is making a difference in the lives of patients today and into the future.

Coinciding with the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, The Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation launched its public fundraising campaign for the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre.

The campaign is built around the message of One Day, One Centre, One Team, which is the Centre’s promise to women concerned about the possibility of breast cancer.

This model of care will help reduce the anxiety felt by patients and their families as they wait for appointments and test results, while allowing those found to have breast cancer to begin treatment sooner.

In addition to the campaign’s public components, a women’s advisory group was formed to help champion the cause in the region. This group consists of Anne Bermingham, Sunni Genesco, Dr. Nicole Hodgson, Keltie Law, Ruth Liebersbach, Nancy McMillan, Yvonne Turner-Moss and Carol Rand.

Adding to the campaign’s momentum, a number of community groups supported the project by running events in support of the planned Centre, including several large events such as: Boobapalooza, Climb for Cancer, February Fever and the Madge Golf Tournament.

Thanks to the support from many donors and community groups the campaign is halfway to its target of $5 million. We have another $2.5 million to raise in preparation for the Centre to be built in 2013.

Cornerstone AwardsAn annual tradition honouring leadership, achievement and commitment to Hamilton Health Sciences was held on June 24, 2010 as we presented the 2010 Cornerstone Awards. Held in the atrium of the newly opened David Braley Cardiac Vascular and Stroke Research Institute, more than 130 guests attended.

The Cornerstone Awards are presented to exemplary leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to advance health care in our community. The three winners in 2010 were:

A group of 17 Nurse Practitioners from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital. The backbone of this unit, these nurses specialize in the care of sick newborns, including extremely premature babies. Their program is a beacon of excellence and they pursue

it with an enormous resource of skills, energy perspective and sensitivity.

Dr. Christopher J. Patterson is a physician with a 28-year career in Geriatric Medicine. As a practicing physician, a researcher, academic and healer, Dr. Patterson has been an unfailing and passionate advocate for elderly patients, and this advocacy has extended into our local community, region and beyond.

Senator David Braley has made numerous significant contributions to our community and region having a positive impact by inspiring others to take pride in and give back to our hospitals and community. His extraordinary generosity supported the construction of a new state-of-the-art research institute at Hamilton Health Sciences named in his honour.

Reggie “The Roadrunner” – a title bestowed upon her by her St. Peter’s healthcare team. At 90 years old, Regina Gallo has seen it all. But after suffering with end-stage heart disease, a leg infection and chronic renal failure, Reggie was diagnosed as needing the services of St. Peter’s Hospital.

When Reggie first arrived at St. Peter’s, she was not mobile and was unable to take care of some basic needs. The St. Peter’s health care providers have a multidisciplinary team approach to people experiencing any life threatening illnesses. Reggie’s care providers include physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians and a chaplain. They are there for Reggie and her family to ensure their physical, emotional and spiritual needs are addressed.

Luckily for Reggie and her family, there is a place like St. Peter’s, a hospital that provides a vital role within the region for its commitment to seniors and complex continuing care patients.

Reggie’s physician Dr. Hattersley says Reggie has exceeded all expectations and she attributes that to Reggie’s determination and the excellent care provided by her team. “It is the efforts of the entire team working together to help our patients bloom to the best of their abilities,” says Dr. Hattersley. “We view them, not just as patients, but as a member of our family.”

Every time I visit, I witness first hand the genuine caring capacity and consideration that goes on there,” says Connie, Reggie’s daughter.

“We were very fortunate to have found the comfort, compassion and care our mom needs at St. Peter’s,” says Connie.

December 1, 2010 marked St. Peter’s 22nd Annual Festival of Lights and this year’s event was sponsored by Investors Group. Patients, donors and the community came together to celebrate the holiday lighting of the trees in the courtyard at St. Peter’s Hospital. Following the community event, a special dinner was held for donors and friends. They enjoyed a festive meal with the goal of raising funds in support of the Alzheimer Research Fellowship at St. Peter’s held by Dr. Monica Marchese. Keeping in line with the holiday theme, 11 beautifully decorated, and donated, trees were auctioned off.

The evening was spearheaded by Ralph and Vicki Weekes with sponsorship by Investors Group. Both individually and through Investors Group, Ralph and Vicki have been tremendous supporters of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, and their contributions have been critical in the ongoing support of the research fellowship.

Two separate estate gifts enabled the construction of a new Palliative Care Family Room at St. Peter’s created specifically to enrich the lives of palliative care patients and their families while at the hospital.

Gifts from the estates of Sam and Edith Horrill and Rosalie Katherine Franks made this special area possible. Designed as a homelike space for patients spending their final weeks in the palliative setting, the importance of having a flexible space for patients and their families during this difficult time was important to both Edith and Rosalie. Both were patients in the palliative unit, and they wanted to leave a legacy so that other patients and their families would have a space that could be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, for visiting, resting, or just a quiet place for private discussions and phone calls.

Among the many comforts provided is a large and fully equipped open kitchen and dining area, a living room area with entertainment and fireplace, laundry room, children’s play area and two quiet rooms with pullout couches and a private phone.

Carol McKenna, Clinical Manager of Palliative Care and Dave McDade from Engineering both were integral to the success of the project. With input from her staff, Carol was able to determine the elements for the room that would be most beneficial for patients and their families. Funds were able to be stretched even further by using internal resources such as Dave’s construction abilities.

A Lasting Legacy

in keeping with the holiday spirit, eleven beautifully decorated trees were auctioned off during the evening. Trees were custom decorated and donated in support of St. Peter’s including one made by St. Peter’s patients.

In the final stages of this report’s preparation, a long-time supporter and friend of St. Peter’s passed away – Trevor Garwood-Jones.

While Trevor’s reputation as an exemplary architect had become widely known and respected, he was known at St. Peter’s for his compassion for others and sincere desire to enhance the quality of their physical space.

He left his mark on many buildings in Hamilton but St. Peter’s Hospital stood out as one of his most personally fulfilling achievements. When redesigning the Hospital in 1970, elements such as floor to ceiling windows and wide hallways were included to accommodate patients in wheelchairs. This innovative thinking led to a building that could be enjoyed by all patients being cared for at the Hospital.

More recently, he was the lead architect on the Alexander Pavilion which is acclaimed throughout the region for its design, and St. Peter’s named the auditorium the Garwood-Jones Family Auditorium after receiving a $100,000 donation from Trevor and his family. A great friend of St. Peter’s Hospital, Trevor will be missed.

Saying Goodbye to a Visionary Architect and Special Friend
