BLM Championships bring VADA
chapters together
The BLM Championships had it all - great
weather, tough competition, the wonderful
Virginia Horse Center, vendors, a fun dog
costume show, competitors’ parties, and
skilled management. But what makes
VADA's fall show special for me as a
President of VADA is that it brings members
of all our chapters together, working seam-
lessly to produce one of the best and largest
shows in our area. The fall show demon-
strates that the VADA chapters, who each
operate independently during the rest of the
year, can all pull together to produce a great
Championship show year after year. VADA,
just like VADA/Nova, has the best volunteers
around! Seeing friends there supporting the
VADA year after year is a pleasure.
Congratulations to our VADA/Nova members
who excelled in their Championship classes -
we are proud of you all! Thanks also to
Dianne Boyd for yet another greet show man-
agement effort. And most importantly, thanks
to all of the volunteers who drive down 81,
braving trucks and traffic, to help their GMO.
It is much appreciated.
Next year, we host the Regional champion-
ships on the same weekend and I can't wait to
see everyone that comes in any capacity.

with Jacquie Brooks, Canadian two-
time Olympian, Nov. 1 and 2 at
Morven Park. There is still time to
sign up to audit - I can promise that
you will learn a lot from Jacquie's fun,

SUMMARY MINUTES
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
October 13, 2014– Morven Park Lounge
The meeting commenced at 7:20 p.m.
There were twelve Board members present and four were
excused.
September meeting minutes were accepted by the Board.
Treasurer’s Report: Dilly reported that the September show made a
substantial profit.The regular account as of Sept. 31, 2014 had a
balance of $104,156.60. This is before we place orders for next year’s
ribbons as well as ribbons and prizes for year-end awards and Above
and Beyond gifts. She also discussed that after upcoming outlays that
VADA/Nova examine how much money we need to keep on hand in
our operating accounts and then look for some safe but interest
earning options for the rest The Special account balance remains
unchanged.
Schooling Shows: Michelle reported that the Compass Rose show
went very well. There were not quite 2 full rings, but the show only
lost $31which is understandable as it has extra expenses for prizes for
the costume winners and the BBQ for the participants. Fourteen riders
qualified for the Championship Show at the Compass Rose show.
There were lots of very good costumes and the judges’ choices were
many!
Jacquie Brooks Clinic: Alison reported that there were only 3 auditors
so far, but there are 8-9 riders as well as an alternate.
Membership: Barb reported that the total number of members for
2014 was 319. So far there are 64 members for 2015, which is a good
start.
Licensed Shows: There will be a Licensed Show Committee meeting
after the Jacquie Brooks clinic and before Thanksgiving. Sheli talked
about mailing tests to competitors who don’t pick them up at shows.
Volunteers: Sheli and Diann Carpenter suggested switching the word-
ing for volunteer hours from 4/8 hours to half or full day. Volunteers
for the September Licensed show were very tight this year, so Kelly
suggested that we consider limiting the number of entries rather than
overtax the volunteers and risk losing even more volunteers. In
general, show secretaries need to coordinate closely with the show
manager as well as the volunteer recruiter and stable manager on the
number of rides and horses to ensure that entries do not exceed either
the stalls or number of volunteers needed.
Incentives for getting volunteers will be discussed at a future meeting,
as this is an on-going issue.
Banquet: Sheli said that the Board will discuss the finalized menu at a
later date, but that it will be fairly similar to last year’s.
Elections: Board members who are going forth for the 2015 Board
need to update their Bio’s. Ballots will be sent out by the end of
October.

From our Manager Michelle Lachner…..
We started the schooling show at Compass Rose Farm with drizzly rain which didn’t dim the enthusiasm of our
competitors and ended the day with a pleasantly cool temperature and low humidity. As in past years, this show was
the final opportunity to qualify for the Schooling Show Championship.
The costumes this year showed once again the wildly creative side of our members. The costumes were amazing
as was the aplomb with which their equine companions wore their embellishments. Many competitors participated,
sporting costumes ranging from Hogwarts students (one mount complete with glasses!), a Santa riding his reindeer,
and a Mardi Gras harlequin. Categories for the costume contest were: best horse and rider combination, most
outrageous, most creative, and judge’s favorite. It was tough to come up with the winners as there were so many
great costumes. The winners were: Ashley Russell and Jennifer Valentine as the Hogwarts pas de deux students
(best horse and rider combination), Mary Callan, our disco queen (most outrageous), and Kathy Coviello as a
fireman (most creative). Since there were two judges, there were two favorites: Caroline York and Candy Allen as
twin Zorros and Michelle Campbell as a warrior princess.
For lunch we once again had a cookout. BJ Lachner and Rodrigo Pool were fabulous grill masters for lunch; our
thanks go to them for their efforts. Competitors and spectators enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers hot off the grill.
Very tasty.
We were fortunate to have as our judges, Nancy Lowey and Jen Moran, who endured the wet, cool weather in the
morning. Barb Zulick was a super show secretary and ably handled the demands of scheduling two rings. The
volunteers were super—Diann Landau and Judy Grass, scribes; Lisa Rice and Muriel Nanninga, ring stewards;
Michele Cappello and Renee Carter, runners; and Barb Pickering and Laurie Zimmerman, scorers. Thank you for
giving your time to VADA/Nova.
As always, thank you to Judy Grass and the wonderful staff of Compass Rose Farm who worked very hard
before, during and after the show to ensure it was a complete success.

VADA/Nova Distinguished Service Award sponsored by Michelle King
CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION: The purpose of the VADA/Nova Distinguished Service Award is to recognize long and faithful volunteer service to VADA/Nova. Individuals who will be considered for this award are those who have made outstanding contributions to VADA/Nova and its mission over a long period of time. These contributions may include serving as a member of the VADA/Nova Board of Directors, including serving as an officer, volunteering on a regular basis at VADA/Nova licensed and schooling shows or clinics, including serving as a schooling show secretary and/or manger, and/ or spearheading special projects and activities. To be eligible for this award, an individual must have been a VADA/Nova member for at least the last 8 years, and their contribution to the organization should be over a period of an extended period of time. Any VADA/Nova member in good standing may nominate someone for the Distinguished Service Award, and the Board of Directors will make the final selection from among the nominations received. Nominations are due December 1st and should be sent to Barb Pickering either by email at [email protected] or by regular mail to P.O. Box 354, Haymarket, VA 20168 Nomination write-ups should be 500 words or less and should be as specific as possible regarding the
nominee’s contribution to VADA/Nova.

-All completed packets must be RECEIVED by the awards
chairperson, Barb Pickering, by December 1, 2014. (no exceptions)
- Electronic submissions of packets are NOT accepted.
- Please do not mail packets in such a way as a signature is required to
pick it up at the post office.
- You do not have to copy the entire test, just the front that shows:
horse/rider, show, date, judge, score, %.
-For licensed shows you may submit a printout.
You do not have to send in a signed volunteer form as we have the tracking chart posted
on the web site. If you need to double check your hours, go to www.vadanova.org, click on the
membership tab and go to volunteers.

note the name so that proper credit may be given.
Make sure you complete a cover sheet (page 7 in the Greenbook)
for each horse/rider combination.
Please don’t mail your packets at the last minute and expect them

VADA 10/8/14 Conference Call Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 8:01pm. Present on the call were Alison Head (NOVA),
Nancy Lowey (Cville) , Tina Longaker (Cville), Meredith McGrath (SWVADA), Jessie Ginsburg (NOVA),
Sheli King (NOVA), Anna Schriebl (Central), Dianne Boyd (NOVA), Alison Douglas (Central),
Anne Draine (Central), Judith Harroun-Lord (ShenVADA), Beth Rippel (SVDA), Angela Stanaway (NE),
Laura Berne (C’ville), Robyn Nunnally (SVDA)
Sheli King made a motion that we approve the minutes from the September board meeting. The motion was seconded by Meredith and was
passed unanimously.
Jessie gave her Treasurer’s report, stating that we had a total of $296K. Balance is high because entry fees are in for BLM are in but not any
expenses. There will be a more accurate balance after the show.
BLM Update- Dianne reported that CBLM is able to provide $6500 in prize money. Entries are not quite at 360 horses. Tina feels good about
the number of entries. This is a turnaround from the past couple of years. There were about 524 qualified- more than ever. Holly is reasona-
bly set for volunteers- we can use more ring stewards and runners but that usually comes when riders get ride times. Hotel rooms were scarce
but Dianne has worked it out. We’re using Best Western for most of the officials. We have 21 rooms at HoJo, 2 at Day’s Inn Lexington and
2 at Day’s Inn close to Staunton. We will reimburse those that have to stay over 30 miles away for fuel. Next year we’ll have the same
problem with us being the same weekend as Parent’s Weekend at VMI but Dianne is investigating Natural Springs. We have volunteer food
set for lunches with the same vendor. Horse Center will cater the volunteer dinners on Friday and Saturday. The Horse Center will do a pasta
bar for the competitor’s party on Friday night. As a thank you for our donation for the Blue Hen, they will throw a wine and cheese party
Saturday afternoon. Morning golf carts with coffee are scheduled again. Food concession will be in 3 areas- upstairs in coliseum, the east
complex, and the food truck. Food truck will be available Wednesday afternoon. They will be up on the hill on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There will be an outside photo op- at the end of the Blue Hen for competitors who want to do their own photos.
Sponsor/Vendor Update-Laura and Nancy recapped that we have 14 vendors coming. 12 Diamond/ Emerald sponsors -292 prizes collected-

Through the Levels with George Williams by Candy Allen
George Williams has an exercise for EVERYTHING! It was a refrain repeated over and over during the
weekend of his clinic. I was lucky enough to participate as a rider and an auditor for both days, so I experienced
this gift from two perspectives. The objective of the clinic was to give us an overview of the requirements of
horse and rider at each of the levels – Training through FEI. He wanted us to see how a horse should go at each
level from a Rider/Trainer/Coach point of view, not a judge’s.
Most of the levels had two demo riders. We were asked to demonstrate various movements from each test
level and George would comment and then offer suggestions for improvement; those famed exercises.
Interspersed throughout were experiences he’s had as a rider and trainer and suggestions on how to “strategize”
your test riding. Some of his words of wisdom:
Read the directives: Each movement has directives on the score sheet. They are there to guide riders, and let
you know what the judge is looking for in that movement and therefore explain why you get the scores you do.
They are in order of priority.
Know “the boxes”: Consider each movement a box as it is on the score sheet. Know the boxes so that if
something goes wrong you can keep the problem in that box so you don’t mess up the next “box” or score.
Practice your test without a full warm up: “There’s never the perfect time to go in the ring,” he explained. “To
be a good competitor you have to be able to ride the horse you have under you at that moment. At a show you
either need more warm up, or less, or different.” He told a story about Klaus Balkenhol giving him just a few
minutes to loosen up his horse then asking to ride the Grand Prix test. By learning to ride the test unprepared it
gives you practice in making the best of what your horse offers you at that moment; stiff, too much energy,
unfocused etc.
Use counting: Count the number of strides in a lengthening versus a working gait so you know if you are
really lengthening the stride. Count the number of strides on a circle and repeat the circle so you know that you
are keeping a regular gait and making the circle the same size.
Deep corners: And I mean DEEP! Corners are your friends not enemies. Apart from all the benefits of using
corners for suppling or collection they work toward your precision during training. You are making the horse go
on your required path and as a result he’ll start to listen better. A good example he gave is if you have to halt at C
or A, the deeper you can ride that corner the more parallel you are when you reach the letter therefore the best
chance for a square halt.
George is on the committee designing the new tests for next year. He assured us we should have them soon.
He threw out a couple of snippets of upcoming attractions.
I can attest to his skill, and creativity, with exercises. He zeroed in on the core problem each horse and rider
had while demonstrating any given movement. I think what I came away with is to think outside the box (not the
score box!). Use the arena creatively, don’t just stick to figures and
movements in the traditional places, mix them up – use the quarter
line, make squares and rectangles within the arena and work inside
them. Also mix up your movements – shoulder in to a canter
transition into trot or walk and immediately renvers, leg yield into
shoulder in or into renvers or into a transition (By the way, there
will be renvers in Third level) and so forth. This way the horse is
responsive to your aids at any time and becomes a more supple,
athletic, ride.
I was very grateful to have the experience of riding with George.
He is articulate, understandable regardless of what level rider you
are, and very, very creative. He is encouraging to the riders and to
the auditors. If you have the opportunity to go see him work, do it!!

SWVADA ROCKS AT CHAPTER CHALLENGE SHOW!
The Virginia Dressage Association 2nd Annual Chapter Challenge show was held on August 23rd at the Virginia Horse
Center in Lexington Virginia. This show was open only to VADA members and gave them a chance to ride in the
Wiley grandstand arena, at Virginia's premier horse facility. The judge was Margaret Little “r”, from Suffolk, VA.
It was hoped that the CC shows will be supported by regional chapters. Managed by Meredith McGrath (SWVADA),
Alison Douglas (Central) was secretary and Sheri Booye (Charlottesville) was scorer. This trio kept the show running
smoothly with the help of volunteers from several chapters. The volunteer of the day was Lauren Connelly who ran
her legs off moving tests from judge to scorer and to competitor's lounge.
Six of VADA's eight chapters were represented at the show. NOVA made up one team, SWVADA another and a
mixed team from Central, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and NEVEDA made up the third team.
At the end of the day, SWVADA captured the CC challenge with a score of 67.234, NOVA was second with 65.358
and the mixed team was third with 61.282.
High Score of the day was a neck and neck challenge between SWVADA's Annie Connelly on Paddington, and
Cody Armstrong on Rubicon VT, who traded positions between Training 2 and 3. Annie Connelly squeaked by with
a score of 77.4 to Cody Armstrong's 77.0 in Training 3. In fact, all 6 places in Training 2 were won by SWVADA
members.

Best Turned Out Pair, sponsored by NOVA, was Elizabeth Gailbraith (NOVA) on Willoughby.
High Score Rider over 50 yrs, sponsored by NEVEDA was Susan Ellis (NEVADA) on Executive Eagle with a score
of 72.5.
Best Seat, sponsored by Central, was Donna Gatchell (NOVA) on Festival HW.
High Score Jr/Yr Rider, sponsored by SWVADA, was Arayna Price (Central), with 69.375.
Blind Me With Your Bling, sponsored by SVDA, was Lisa Beckwith (Fredericksburg).
High Score Adult Rider under 50 yr, sponsored by Charlottesville, was Annie Connelly (SWVADA) on Paddington
with 77.4.
Reserve High Score Adult Rider under 50 yr, sponsored by Charlottesville, was Cody Armstrong (SWVADA) on
Rubicon VT with 77.0.
Oldest Horse, sponsored by Fredericksburg, was Jennifer Hockett's (Central) horse Nicholas.
High Score Friesian, sponsored by ShenVADA, was Yaromir, ridden by Cody Armstrong (SWVADA) with 70.536.

For October, we introduce you to Muriel Nanninga.
Muriel and her husband Garrett were both born and raised in Whittier, CA, moving to Virginia in 2000. They just decided to try the
East Coast and moved to 5.5 acres in the rural crescent of Prince William County where their equine “kids” have plenty of room to
run. Muriel didn’t start riding until she was in her 30’s. She bid on riding lessons in a silent auction and to her surprise she won, so she started riding a hunter-jumper. Later she met (and married) Garrett who actually owned a horse, which is rare for the
Los Angeles area. Muriel is an engineer and is really drawn to the technical aspects of dressage. She is also a musician (flute and piccolo) so Freestyle is just the perfect discipline. In 2000, Muriel started her formal dressage with a then 5 year old Quarter horse mare Dutchess, just before moving to
Northern Virginia. Things went well until an injury ended Dutchess's dressage career. Other than an occasional short hop, riding went by the wayside for over a decade (Muriel learned to play the alto and bass flutes during that time). A few years ago, one of
Garrett's fellow EMTs from the Fire Department moved nearby and they had a retired event horse trained to 2nd level that they needed exercised. What an opportunity! Muriel got back into riding, and with a lot of patient coaching from Debbie Marriott, campaigned a very successful year with Secret. After losing Garrett's long time trail riding buddy
“Sugar Duz Dance”, they decided to fill the empty stall by buying a show horse for Muriel. The result of that decision was Jameson, a 17 hand, 8 year old, Percheron/TB cross. He’s their first gelding, first big horse, and first non-Quarter horse. Turned out he's a lot greener than
originally thought, so it has been quite an adventure. Little did they know what we were getting into. Within a few days it was discovered that he is very inquisitive and would put his
nose in just about anything. Muriel was showering Dutchess and when she turned around she found Jameson standing there with the bottom 8 inches of his nose covered in soap bubbles! An hour later he was dumpster diving in an old trash can used for cleaning stalls! Muriel is
looking forward to showing next year! Muriel’s favorite VADA/Nova volunteer job (so far) is ring steward. In her words: “In the warm up ring, you get to greet everyone as they come in to warm-up and let them
know where you are in the order so they can plan the best warm-up possible. In the show ring, you get to be the last person to tell them to have a great ride.”

I am proud to nominate Alison Douglas for the Shel Gafford Memorial Award – she typifies the good sportsmanship
and support of VADA for which this award was created. For the past several years, Alison has been on the VADA
Board of Directors and currently serves as the organization’s efficient and dedicated secretary, earning the respect and
friendship of her fellow board members (including me). She has supported numerous VADA events as a volunteer,
including assisting with show secretary duties at the VADA Fall Show. Somehow, in the countless hours Alison has
devoted to assisting VADA, and the many challenges in dealing with stressed competitors, Alison always maintains a
positive spirit and rollicking sense of humor. I feel very privileged to have gotten to know Alison through our service
on the VADA Board of Directors and believe that her contributions to VADA and to dressage throughout Virginia are
deserving of recognition through the Shel Gafford Memorial Award.

Denise always has a smile on her face and is always willing to lend a hand whenever and wherever she can. Denise is
an active competitor and always helps us set up for our licensed show and only competes one day so as to help us on
Sunday as a warm-up steward as well as help us break down. She is self-less and is always happy to see new and
familiar faces. She is an excellent role model for the younger kids coming into the sport because of her willingness to
help, her kind heart, her selflessness, and her positivity. Denise is always cheering on and supporting fellow
competitors regardless of whether she knows them or not. She gives of herself immensely in order to make this sport
better and more enjoyable for everyone. She truly makes the world a better place.
Kathy Rowse (SVDA): (Submitted by Janice Mumford)
Kathy Rowse has been a long time member of VADA & SVDA. She has held many positions including her
current post of SVDA President. She is an S judge, a member of the USDF L faculty, and on the Youth committee.
She has mentored several juniors up the levels to national completion. Kathy has worked tirelessly to bring in quality
clinicians into our area at her own risk. Kathy took on the project of running an L program so VADA members might
benefit from having a close proximity to go for education and/or becoming an L graduate. In 2015 she will once again
be putting on another D session for the benefit of our membership. I feel Kathy Rowse exemplifies the tireless
dedication required for the Shel Gafford Award.

I’d like to nominate my hardworking wife, Anna, for this award. She is always there to help out where needed, even
after a long day working for the Air Force. She belongs to two different VADA chapters and edited one chapter
newsletter for a couple of years and then stepped in to help the VADA-CC with their newsletter as well when their
editor was going through a rough time. Anna has volunteered at numerous schooling and recognized shows, the
L Program testing, and is always there to lend a helping hand and encouraging word where needed. She is not a “win
at all costs” person at shows and will actually help her competition, whether it is helping them warm up or calling the
test for them. It doesn’t matter if that gives them a competitive edge over her. Her only goal is the good of the horse.
Anna has a big heart for rescues and recently started a registry to help get them recognized as viable dressage mounts.
She was very proud to the have USDF recognize the registry for the breed awards! Anna does numerous clinics and
fundraisers for the local rescue horse agency and is planning a dressage fun show for the Wounded Warriors
organization this winter. Thank you for considering her.
Pamela McGeough Shanahan (SVDA): (Submitted by Cathy Couch)
Pamela Shanahan has impressed me with her attitude, passion, and dedication. My only exposure to Pamela has been
at the shows but she really has made an impression. Pamela has openly encouraged riders in dressage and western
dressage. She has shared her love for riding and is now bringing a large group to our local school shows. Pamela has
been competing in Western Dressage and my daughter has been doing the same this year. At one of the shows, we
had a scheduling conflict and our reader was not available. In a pinch I asked Pamela if she would read for us.
Pamela kindly agreed. She immediately walked over to my daughter to discuss how they would proceed. Not only
did she agree to read, she also offered to provide her with any warm up and training tips she made need as well.
Wow!!!! Such kindness from another trainer from a barn that we don’t ride with has really touched me. My 13 year
old daughter was very impressed and instantly made a new friend. I wish more adults would make an effort to reach
out and be a mentor to our young riders demonstrating sportsmanship in a competitive sport.
