Kris Kringle was born on Christmas Eve of 1998 along with his three sisters. In Belgium, all litters born in 1998 were to have names that started with an X; the kennel name follows the dog’s name in Belgium. We chose XmasKris (Christmas Kris) Van Hof ‘T Ten Eynder as a name which fit all the criteria. Well, in the translation process, or some clerk’s error, the name was misspelled as XmaxKris. This too-cute puppy boarded the plane with us for his 12-hour flight over the North Pole to Seattle, Washington. Of course, he had to ride in the cargo hold in his #300 crate as he was already too big to fit in any Sherpa carry-on bag! After one short plane transfer in Amsterdam, the plane landed in Seattle and Kris came out of his crate full of energy from his long nap. Before we left for Belgium, Kris was enrolled in an obedience puppy class, which started a week after his arrival in the good ole USA. It sure is a reality shock to start over with a new puppy. This one had to start his new life learning English as he lived his first 12 weeks hearing and learning Dutch. My last UDT Saint Bernard (WDCH Mar-Wil’s Markus V Hyden UDT, DD -- CH Opdyke’s Bo-Jangles X CH Mar-Wil’s D-D) fin- ished all his titles at 2 ½ years of age in 1989 and lived to 10 ½ years of age. So it had been awhile since I trained a dog from the beginning. I could tell from the beginning that Kris was a very bright “little” boy! I know, we all say that about our dogs! He showed his smarts very early on around the house with his problem-solving techniques. For example, at three months (12 weeks) of age he pushed open the screen door to go out. No big deal as pups learn this quite fast. Kris then used his paw to hook the screen door, pull it open towards him (from the outside) and then, at the same time, put his nose in the opening to come back in. As he ventured down the stairs from the back door he found a bi-fold door to the room at the bottom of the stairs. After watching Suzanne and I push the middle of the bi-fold to open it, he did the same with his nose. He went up to the door, pushed the middle to get the door to bend and start to open, and then went to the edge to finish opening it all the way with his paw. Of course, he was so proud to enter the room and show us what he had learned. Our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, who was 2 ½ years of age, had not figured out this door opening routine. She now has it down pat from watching and learning from this bright Saint Bernard puppy brother of hers. Kris’s training went like that of most working dogs; the more I worked him the faster he progressed. I found with my Saints of the past that only a 15-minute training session 3 to 4 times a week worked VERY well to achieve training progress.

Kris—The alphabet soup boy of Saint Bernards

Hall of Fame - 37 Plateaus of Excellence - 9 Breed Records - 36 Breed Firsts OFA112G

It was in March of 1999 that Suzanne and I went over to Belgium to pick up our brand new “son,” who was just 12-weeks old. Before we left for Belgium, Kris was enrolled in an

obedience puppy class, which started a week after his arrival in the good ole USA. It sure is a reality shock to start over with a new puppy. This one had to start his new life learning English as he lived his first 12 weeks hearing and learning Dutch. My last UDT Saint Bernard (WDCH Mar-Wil’s Markus V Hyden UDT, DD -- CH Opdyke’s Bo-Jangles X CH Mar-Wil’s D-D) fin-ished all his titles at 2 ½ years of age in 1989 and lived to 10 ½ years of age.

The conformation show career started when he showed maturity just past two years of age. In less than a year he finished his championship. Kris glided around the show ring with his muscular defined body exhibiting power, ease of movement, an exceptional side gait and top line. After the champion-ship title was earned, Kris ventured into more performance venues—always pushing the envelope and trying something new. Occasionally he went back into the conformation ring at the local specialty while also performing in Open, Utility and Ral-ly. In 2006 at the Saint Bernard Club of America’s National Specialty in Cheyenne, WY, Kris earned a Select Award of Merit with over 50 cham-

pions in the Specials class, plus being awarded the Highest Scoring Champion of Record from the advanced Open B class in obedience. He also earned a perfect score in Rally as he competed in Advanced and Excellent, and he did all this with his eighth birthday only 90 days away.

In the venue of Obedience, Kris is the only Saint Bernard to earn a Championship and a Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) title. He is my second Champion UD (out of the 7 in the breed) Saint Bernard and the 4th Saint Bernard that I have put the UD title on (plus my third UDT). A weird statistic is the dates of my 4 Saints UD titles: April 25, April 26, April 27 and April 29. Different years/decades, of course, range from 1972-2002! All UD titles were earned in Eastern Washington and two of them at the Walla Walla KC trials. With the championship and the Utility titles behind us we started training in Agility to try something different. AKC Agility is a fairly new AKC venue which commenced in 1994. Kris loved the new sport and after only 9 weeks of training he com-pleted the requirements for his first agility title and became the breed’s first champion with an agility title. From thereon, the agility titles just kept arriving in the mail as Kris “mastered” the sport by earning 9 Master Agility titles and 3 F.A.S.T. titles (totaling 18 Agility titles), which is unprecedent-ed by a Saint Bernard, and he is still the only Saint to have earned these exceptionally advanced titles in the world of agility. I also introduced tracking to Kris just to see how he would like to try something new again. Plus, we set a new goal trying to be the first Saint Bernard to earn a Versatile Companion Dog (VCD) title, which required a Tracking Dog (TD) title. This dog loved it (after all, he is a rescue/working breed) and earned his TD in 100 days from being introduced to this sport venue. Kris did an outstanding job earning his TD title on November 24, 2002. He was right on the track and it was like following a car going down a highway that used turn signals at each turn. He completed the 465-yard track (aged 30 minutes) in six minutes time! With Kris's TD title completed, the requirements for two other titles, the SBC of America's Working Dog Championship (WDCH) plus, the fairly new AKC Versatile Companion Dog (VCD1) title were also achieved.

Having been in Saint Bernards since 1969, I knew what a unique gift Kris was for us to enjoy as we shared our lives. It is rare to find such a dog with outstanding conformation, plus a sound body and mind, and the willingness to accomplish highly advanced titles in seven different venues.

“Kris" is the most-titled Champion (AKC versatile-titled & highest-titled) Saint Bernard in breed history (39 titles in 7 different ven-ues--Breed, Obedience, Rally, Tracking, Agility, Draft Work and Weight Pulling). The 39 titles are only AKC and SBCA titles—there are no duplicate titles in other registries. Each title supersedes the prior title in difficulty in the particular venue.

We are very proud of the fact that Kris is the only Saint Ber-nard to be invited to the AKC National Agility Invitational (NAI) competition to represent our breed. In fact, he has been invited twice while achieving the top competition Saint Bernard in agility in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Kris received a special award of merit from the American Kennel Club (for our breed) for his unprecedented accomplishments in agili-ty—multiple combined scores from the Excellent Standard & Excellent Jumpers With Weaves classes. While competing at the NAI, Kris was “interviewed” and that interview ended up on national television as a segment during the Working Group telecast of the AKC conformation Invitational. It was a moment of sheer pride to see

our boy represent our breed as a champion competing at the first AKC Agility Invitational. I might add, he did a splendid job and had a clean run in the Jumpers With Weaves class while being filmed. In 2006, Kris was also invited to compete at the AKC Na-tional Obedience Invitational competition. That year the event was held in Florida which was just a little too far to travel from Washington State.

THANK YOU to Shirley Wolf who put me in touch with Britt Halvorsen after I first saw Kris’ sire (Multi CH Bernegarden’s Ragtime) at the 1997 SBCA National in Colorado. After spending some quality time with Ragtime, I knew I wanted a pup from him! THANK YOU to Britt Halvorsen, who owned Kris' sire, for putting me in touch with Kris' breeder, Franky de Tandt (Belgium), who owned Kris' mother, Rabigail van het Mazerhof. THANK YOU Franky for trusting a stranger (at the time) and letting this puppy fly away from his homeland to America.

Kris now has many titles to his name, but the MOST IMPORTANT title he has to us is BF (Best Friend). It is the everyday life of companionship that really counts more than a title or two.

Kris left for the Rainbow Bridge on February 7, 2010

A THANK YOU to Our National Club from Kris, John and Suzanne Cox It was a distinct honor for Kris (CH/WDCH XmaxKris Van ‘t Hof Ten Eynder VCD2, UDX, RAE, MXP4, MJP3, DD, WPS) to be the only Saint Bernard to be invited to the 1st American Kennel Club (AKC) Agility Invitational in Long Beach, California, USA on December 2nd & 3rd, 2006 and to represent our beloved breed.

Thank You to the Saint Bernard Club of America and the membership for supporting our breed at this prestigious AKC inaugural event. It was a proud moment for Kris, Suzanne and me, and the breed as a whole, when we stepped up to the American Kennel Club’s agility podium to receive the AKC medallion (pictured below) for the Top #1 Saint Bernard in agility recognized by the AKC and donated by our national club.

Kris ran extremely well and opened many an eye to see that our breed is very agile and capable of maneuvering around the complex Excellent levels of the agility rings; and to think he is eight years of age is even more remarkable. The Animal Planet and Discovery channels did not miss this moment in history! They “interviewed” Kris and showed clips of his runs on their National live simulcast broadcast (December 3rd, 2006) of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship during the Working Group. The interview may be shown again this February 11th, 15th, & 18th, 2007 on Animal Planet at 8:00 pm E/P time as they broadcast the AKC Agility Invitational. Kris, Suzanne and I were truly honored and enjoyed the opportunity to show the world our breed at its best--a Champion Saint Bernard Club of America National Award of Merit winner with thirty titles to his name! It gave us goose bumps when we learned he received a standing ovation from the Saint Bernard crowd in the grandstands that came to cheer Kris on! You are the best in the offering of your genuine sportsmanship and support for Kris and our breed!

We heard many a comment on how wonderful it was to see a Saint Bernard running in agility, like it was something foreign to our breed. When you stop and think of it, Agility is a sport that very much recreates part of our “Working” breed’s history. In reflecting back to the origins of the Saint Bernard, they did climb mountains (A-Frames), jump over obstacles (Bar Jumps), weaved through brush (Weave Poles), went under logs (Tunnels), over streams (Broad Jumps) and dived under the snow cover (Chutes) in their route to find the lost travelers in the Swiss Alps. Why, Agility is a *natural* for this giant breed!

Thank you again,

John & Suzanne Cox & Kris

In the Fall of this year, I received a letter from the AKC stating Kris was the Top Saint Bernard in Agility for 2007. He is the only Saint Bernard to ever Double Q (qualifying in Excellent Standard & Excellent Jumpers With Weaves) and this accomplishment was to be honored at the 2008 AKC Invitational Agility Banquet on December 13th. What a presentation it was! The AKC had a Power Point presentation on a huge screen and each breed’s Top Dog was projected on the screen as the award was presented. I was so proud for our breed as the head of the AKC Agility Department read off Kris's titles. Our breed was the most-titled breed of all the honorees!

The Story of a Little “Big” Dog From a Tiny Country Named Belgium Franky De Tandt, “Van ‘t Hof ten Eynder”- kennel

It was the end 1998 when I received a phone call from my tutor in Saints, Britt Marit Halvorsen, asking me if I would consider the possibility of sending one of the coming puppies out of my Rabigail and her Ragtime to the USA. The USA? Such a big country, so many people, and no one I know, where will my puppy live, what if there are problems, what if the dog is not good enough, what if…… so many questions. A few days later an email arrived from an unknown (at that time) man, Mr. Cox from Seattle, Washington, presenting himself, his family, assuring me of his knowledge in dog world and revealing his plans with the eventual dog. Immediately I had a very good feeling about this man. After discussing this issue with my parents, we agreed to send the best male out of the litter to Mr. Cox and his family. The closer we came to the day of giving birth the more nervous we became. On December 24, 1998, Christmas eve, around 9 PM, suddenly Rabigail started to have some bad outflow. In the emergency and as we drove her to the vet’s office, we tried to be as calm as possible. It was a one-hour drive to the vet. At the vet’s place his family was there for celebrating Christmas and we were there with a big dog having trouble giving birth. When everybody was celebrating Christmas, the vet and I were trying to save Rabigail’s puppies. A half-hour later the puppies were born by cesarean--three females and only one male.

When we told Mr. Cox the news he immediately confirmed to us that he would like to have the only male of the litter and immediately gave us a little training schedule and the name that he would love to have on the dog. In Belgium, every registered dog born in that year had to have a name starting with an “X.” Together with the date of birth, Mr. Cox asked for the “XMASKRIS.” Due to a mistake of the clerk at the Kennel club’s office they made it “XMAXKRIS.” From that day on our little boy got the name Xmaxkris van‘t Hof ten Eynder, alias KRIS.

His first lessons in “obedience” he got in his homeland. By this I mean that I only trained him to be nice and quiet in the flybox (airline crate) and to stack on the show table. When Kris became twelve weeks of age, his new future parents, John and Sue Cox, came over to Belgium to pick up our boy. When we got home from the airport John immediately started to communicate with Kris in a foreign language but Kris seemed to understand!

A few days later when I drove everybody back to the airport my heart was bouncing very hard; I had to let this little fellow go to a country as big as Europe. At the check-in, I asked John and Sue to take very good care of Kris and to stay in touch. I hugged little Kris, gave an extra tip to the guy from the airport to be sure Kris was treated okay and set on the right plane, then I turned around and felt very anxious. Twenty-four hours later I got the very first email with the very first picture of Kris on American ground. I still remember that picture as if it were yesterday--Little Kris with a Saint Bernard doll in his mouth. From that day, John and Sue kept us informed about every performance of Kris. If I would have known then what I know now I would never have been anxious, and I would have chosen a more easily pronounced kennel name for the English-speaking people.

I was very happy and surprised the day John announced that Kris had earned his first title, which was an obedience title. It was very special to me because in our country people mostly do not work with Saints in obedience. A little later Kris got his American champion title; it was my very first home-bred dog that became an American champion. What a feeling!

I thought John and Kris had achieved their goals, but no, John informed me of one title after another. We were lucky that John specified every time what the names of the titles meant. Even with all John’s explanations, most of the time I had to look up what the new title was about.

After conformation, obedience, tracking and weight pulling I really thought that that was it, but once again John surprised me the day he told me he had started agility with Kris. I asked John several times if he was sure about doing agility with Kris, a Saint-Bernard. In my country, agility is mostly performed by

Page 12: Hall of Fame Record - Most-Titled CH - 39 Titles€¦ · Our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, who was 2 ½ years of age, had not figured out this door opening routine. She now has it down pat

Border Collies and shepherds. Kris and John in agility were just UNBELIEVABLE for me. Once again, John and Kris surprised me by winning even in this “unnatural” discipline for a Saint in the dog world. The last time Kris and John surprised me was at the 2006 National. As an 8-year-old dog he got an Award of Merit under Mr. Zielinski. My old boy did very well and my heart skipped a beat when I got the news. “My” boy, born in such a little country from such a small and beginning breeder in this giant breed got a select at the National. It was and still is unbelievable for me.

With all his achievements, Kris became one of the most important dogs that I have ever produced. Everybody in the Saint Bernard world around the globe seems to know Kris. More than once I used Kris as an example in so many discussions at so many meetings and seminars that were held about the Saint and the American type, angulations and the ability to move and work, plus be a show dog and still be functional.

Many times I stood there at the annual dinner at the National to collect one of Kris’s many title award plaques. Many times people congratulated me and told me how nice and beautifully built Kris is. Those things were flattering for me, but I have to be honest. I am only the very lucky breeder of a dog that never ever would have achieved what he did if he wouldn’t have been in John Cox’s hands. As a dog breeder, one can only hope and wish that all his puppies go to people like John and Sue Cox, who are so intensely dedicated to this wonderful breed; one can’t imagine.

Dear John, every time you signed Kris’s emails to me with “the great one” showing me how proud you are of this dog. Personally for me, “the great one” is not only for Kris but also for you. I am convinced no one can get more out of a dog than you can! CONGRATULATIONS.

So, thank you John and Suzanne Cox and Miss Lina (their Welsh Corgi) for achieving the unachievable with “my” Belgian boy. I also want to thank Britt Marit Halvorsen, for letting me use her dog, Multi-CH Bernegarden’s Ragtime (the father of Kris) to be able to make the correct mating and to introduce me to the wonderful COX family.
