HAFAN Y COED CONSTRUCTION From the outside, Hafan y Coed looks practically complete, which hides the considerable work that is still going on inside. Progress has been amazing and some of the ward blocks are now finished. In other areas, work focuses on final decorations, laying vinyl flooring, the installation of fixed furniture, including bedroom furniture, and final mechanical and electrical work. Internal and external wayfinding signs are awaiting approval before being ordered. External works have been undertaken to install a bus stop and table top ramp on the main hospital driveway outside Hafan y Coed and a drop zone outside the Plaza. Landscaping around the outside of the Unit is almost complete along with the Multi Use Games Area to the rear of the Unit. PLAZA AND MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE HOSPITAL Now the hoardings have come down, the new Plaza can be seen in all its glory. And you are probably wondering when it will be open for use. Well... the exact date will be announced in due course, but it is likely that the new Plaza and inner corridor will become operational in mid September. The transformation of the main entrance, and what was once a very narrow inner corridor into the hospital is pretty spectacular and we hope you will be just as impressed as we are. And even better, the new facilities will provide a whole range of amenities designed to deliver those services you told us were important for staff, patients and visitors. In the Plaza, you will find the Aroma coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating areas, a small number of retail units, the Hearth Gallery - Ariel Yr Aelwyd, a patient information centre and a courtyard garden (see the believe tree over the page). This will be a fantastic new facility for everyone at UHL and will play a key role in integrating Hafan y Coed into UHL when it is commissioned next spring. Key dates to note are:- Refurbishment works in the main corridor Plaza and new entrance into the Hospital to open mid September; and Retail Units – further information to follow shortly once details have been finalised. It should be noted that once the Plaza becomes operational, this will be the main entrance into the hospital. The temporary entrance, which was opened up to facilitate the construction works, will be closed and everyone will be redirected through the Plaza. LOCAL ARTIST BRIGHTENS UP THE COURTYARD AT UHLThe courtyard garden, close to the main entrance and new Art Gallery at UHL, has been revitalised with the help of the community pay back team and local artist Amelia Thomas, who has designed and painted a new bespoke piece of art onto the courtyard wall. The image, called the ‘Believe Tree’ was inspired by the touching words of a creative writing by Hilary Griffiths:-

This extract is taken from ‘Behind Many Doors’ (Accent Press), an anthology of writings about WhitchurchHospital and published by Literature Wales.

HR UPDATEThank you for participating in the 1:1 meetings. Itwas good to hear your views, which were a mixtureof excitement and concerns about the move toHafan y Coed. At this stage in the process, moststaff within mental health have indicated apreference to transfer to the new Hafan y Coed atUHL. Some staff have undertaken a trial run oftheir journey from home to UHL via public transportto help them decide their future and feedback hasbeen positive.

Over the next few months we will be addressingsome of the common themes raised, including howwe can move towards a consistent shift pattern forstaff in Hafan y Coed. The Mental Health Clinical

Board have investigated the evidence and whilstthree long days is not advisable we support a shiftpattern that includes some long days to supportstaff to achieve a work/life balance.

In preparation for the transfer of the wards toHafan y Coed, we are asking staff to help usmanage the move by not booking any annual leavebetween 21st - 29th April 2016. Your co-operationwill be much appreciated.

We are starting to plan a number of visits and openevents for inpatients, service users and others whoare interested in visiting the site early in 2016. Wehave already arranged some visits for clinical staff, with more to follow, to assist them to visualise theenvironment and how they will work within it.

made me believe in tomorrow”.

WHITCHURCH HOSPITAL DECOMMISSIONING UPDATEPatient care is the Health Board’s priority and we continue to look at the most effective and efficient way toprovide services and the location of services that have direct impact on patient care. We are continuing todiscuss solutions and will contact departments as soon as plans are further developed.

You will know from the letters you received in March 2015, that the following staff/departments have beenidentified as requiring transfer to alternative locations:-

In consulation with service leads, possible solutions have been identified for some departments and forothers, the feasibility of potential options are being worked through. All of the options will require somecapital works and these costs are being developed. The Director of Planning will need all of this informationto enable the overall proposals to be considered before a firm decision is made regardig future locations andthe timescales for implementation.

Please be reassured that we continue to work on solutions and the overall aim is to close WhitchurchHospital in a timely manner.

REASSURANCE OBSERVATIONSYSTEM - ADDRESSING ISSUES OFPRIVACY AND DIGNITYThe aim of the inpatient service is to provide a safeand therapeutic environment in which recovery canbe encouraged, supported and managed. In supportof this, a Reassurance Observation System (ROS) willbe introduced into the new Unit. This will provide amodern system which will allow staff to monitorinpatients, in appropriate situations, at nightwithout the need to enter the room. The systemwill provide a visual and audio feed from within theroom via an external observation unit locatedoutside the room. Each room will have its own

dedicated unit which will be electronically lockedand its use restricted to authorised staff

Comprehensive safeguards are in place to protectprivacy and dignity of inpatients. Images are notrecorded and the system will produce no moreinfringement upon privacy than the traditionalmethod currently used. Benefits will include fewerdisturbances when the person is attempting tosleep, which should improve the level of sleep andenhance their progress to recovery.

The ROS will be installed in 91 of the bedroomswith the remaining 44 utilizing more traditionalvistamatic observation windows.

END OF AN ERAWe are keen to offer all of our staff the opportunity to say goodbye to Whitchurch Hospital, mark its closure asan inpatient service and prepare for the move to the new Unit - Hafan y Coed. We appreciate that many serviceusers and staff have memories of Whitchurch Hospital that they would like to reflect upon, and while thefacilities are no longer appropriate for 21st century care, it has been important in the lives of many people.

Often people smoke when they are bored, fed up,anxious, want to reward themselves. Cravings forcigarettes last around 6 minutes. If you can distractyourself for around 10 minutes, you will getthrough the cravings a lot easier.

These are some techniques to help reduce thecravings for cigarettes:-

• Read a book or magazine, play cards or try a jigsaw puzzle

• Go outside for fresh air, do some exercise, take a short walk

• Speak to a friend

• Drink some ice water, eat a lollipop or chew sugar free gum

• Brush your teeth. The fresh taste doesn’t go with a cigarette

• Write a letter, poem or joke

• Take a shower

• Do your nails or put on hand cream and keep your hands busy

STITCHING OUT STIGMAThe Hafan yCoed ArtStrategyGroup hascommissionedStitching OutStigma toproduce anexciting

collaborative art work to be displayed within thenew Unit. Natalie describes here her experience ofworking on the exciting new initiative:-

“My personal experiences of Whitchurch Hospitalspan over many years – as a patient, a volunteer, avisitor and a health support worker, which is whydoing this project is something I’m passionateabout. The idea began in May 2014 and has reallytaken off. People from all over the world, with allsorts of experiences and at all different stages oftheir own journey, are involved. It’s gone frombeing an idea to a real community of cross stitchers. But we want many more people on board to reallyhelp ‘stitch out’ the sad stigma which still surroundsmental health issues and, most importantly, revealthe truth from those in the know.

The project involves creating a giant cross stitchdisplay to be hung in the new Unit. Individualsare asked to contribute a 10x10 square ofstitching which represents their ideas, experiences, journeys and thoughts of mental health issues. You can do one or more squares or even join a‘round robin’ – the more the merrier! It would begreat to be able to represent the wide range oftreatments, disorders and experiences of people.

Throughout my experiences I have used crossstitch and other crafts as a tool to destress, startconversations, find mutual ground or distractmyself from unhelpful thoughts. I never imaginedthe project would take off in such a big way, andevery new supporter (we have many charities andorganisations backing it), new contributor andnew ‘like’ on facebook or e-mail, gives me a real‘happy buzz’!

So please consider joining us, spreading the wordand putting your own ‘stitch’ onto the display. Itcould help you and others, and we’d love to haveyou on board”
