The area was officially opened by Finance Minister Jane Hutt AM and Deputy Health Minister Vaughan Gething AM. Mr Gething said: “I was so impressed with the new facilities; combining art into the hospital adds another dimension to people’s health and wellbeing. Also, I couldn’t help but admire the new Adult Mental Health Unit, Hafan y Coed from across the road”. Geoff Walsh, Director of Capital Estates and Facilities, said: “The new plaza really makes an impact on the entrance to the hospital, designed to accommodate patients, visitors and staff and the Llandough community as a whole. The new Aroma café is open seven days a week and all proceeds go directly back into patient care”. NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THENEW UNITA range of new technologies have been incorporatedinto Hafan y Coed which will improve the way wecommunicate and support a safer environment. Butdon’t worry, training will be given:-

Traka is used for managing and controlling access tokeys within the Unit to enhance safety and security ofour assets:

• Controlling and auditing key management for premises, facilities and stores;

• Key management to secure areas such as plant rooms servicing power, air conditioning and water supplies; and

• Enforcing multi-level authorisation to keys for restricted areas

Tag Data Security Infrastructure (TDSI) is anintegrated access control system managed by theUHB security department. Doors subject to accesscontrol through this system will require authorised

staff to use a TDSI card (which is also a staff IDbadge). Authorised access will be strictly managed byappropriate signatories.

Salto is an electronic door locking system used withinthe wards, mainly for bedrooms. It will enable staffto easily manage service user access rights within thewards. Service users will be issued with ‘accesscontrol bands’ which will grant them access into theirbedrooms and safes and any other appropriate areason the ward. Staff will have the facility to amendand change access rights from within the ward via alocal PC. This is a completely separate system to theTDSI system.

Vocera is a communication system which enablesinstant connection with the right person, via theVocera device, simply by saying the name, function orgroup name of the person they want to reach. The Vocera system controls the calling functions ofdevices and maintains profiles for users and groupsthat enable customisation of workflow patterns foreach user.

Preparation for the transfer of services from Whitchurch Hospital and the Llanfair Unit to Hafan y Coed are wellunder way, with dates for the moves shown below. Everyone is working together to make the transition assmooth as possible for service users.

Page 4: HAFAN Y COED - ADULT MENTAL HEALTH UNIT UNIVERSITY ... · Jane Hutt AM and Deputy Health Minister Vaughan Gething AM. Mr Gething said: “I was so impressed with the new facilities;

Pinpoint is a call assistance system. A PersonalInfrared Transmitter (PIT) will be worn by staff inclinical areas which can be activated by pressing abutton, or in more serious situations by pulling thePIT free from its retaining pin. When activated, thearea will instantly be flooded with infrared signalsthat activate the nearest receiver unit and summonsstaff appropriate to the situation. Calls can be reset ateach nurse base on the ward.

The system will also incorporate fixed call units atvarious places around Hafan y Coed, enabling patientto staff call or and emergency call to be made.Individual units may be disarmed to avoid misuse.

All pinpoint hardware is robust, anti ligature andsecured with tamper proof fixings.

A service user monitoring facility will be installedwithin 4 specific bedrooms within theneuropsychiatry ward. When switched on, this willalert staff at the nurse base when a service user getsout of bed, enabling them to respond.

Reassurance Observation System (ROS) – willallow staff to monitor service users, in appropriatesituations, at night without the need to enter thebedroom. The system will provide a visual and audiofeed from within the room via an externalobservation unit located outside the room. Eachroom will have its own dedicated unit which will beelectronically locked and its use restricted toappropriate staff. The inclusion of ROS simply aims tobe less intrusive and disruptive for service users thantraditional methods of observation. It will protectprivacy and provide governance through the abilityto monitor staff observation activity.

ART UPDATEA variety of arts projects have been instigated atUHL, focusing on the impact that an inspirationaland creative approach can have for rehabilitationand recovery for patients and service users:-

Hafan y Coed (Haven of Trees) – Working with avariety of artists who specialise in differentmediums and styles, public artwork has been

integrated into Hafan y Coed to benefit patients, visitors and staff. The theme adopted for the Unit isnature, which reflects the environment and externallandscaping within which it sits. This theme isfollowed through into the design of the building, including definition of areas and wayfinding withinthe Unit. The naming of wards is in keeping withthe theme, with wards named after trees:-

Oriel yr Aelwyd (Hearth Gallery) – the gallery canbe found at UHL within the Plaza and will offer aprogramme of art exhibitions, music and eventsthroughout the year to people using the hospital andthe public. This space demonstrates our commitmentto creativity and reflects our increasing belief that artaids the healing process. The display of artworkextends out across the UHL site, where you will findan eclectic mix of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures and installation art to enjoy.

Melanie Wotton hasbeen appointed ArtGallery Coordinator.Talking about theGallery, she said, “TheGallery will be anengaging andwelcoming spacewhere we are surepatients, staff and

visitors will find the dynamism of the changingexhibitions of great interest, providing inspirationand a place for contemplation”. Melanie has workedwith the UHB on a number of art projects includingbeing commissioned to produce paintings for theAssessment and Recovery Unit for older people withmental health issues and also commissioning andpurchasing artwork for Hafan y Coed.

Paintings in Hospital – a hub for Paintings inHospital has been created on the first floor maincorridor of UHL, enabling them to support the UHBto use artwork to improve the health and wellbeingof patients, service users, careers and the public andalso to deliver art projects and engagementactivities.

Courtyard – the courtyard adjacent to the Plazahas been brightened up and incorporates theBelieve Tree using for inspiration a creative writingpiece by Hilary Griffiths.

Gwyndaff Llewellyn – Gwyndaff is a service userand this is his story:-

“As long as I can remember I’ve been drawing, mostof the time using it as my coping strategy. But overtime my art work seems to get better. I’ve grownmore patient and am always looking for some new, more challenging ideas. Some of my pieces have aJapanese influence and I just love drawing flowersin this style. In November 2013, I broke my rightarm and had to learn to draw with my left hand - I just never want to stop drawing. I’m lookingforward to having my pieces on display at Hafan yCoed. Being part of the art strategy work for thenew mental health unit has been a good experienceand has improved my confidence”.

Relocation of the Miners’ Mural – the mural has been moved from the rear of UHL to a prominentlocation adjacent to the Plaza, where visitors will be able to admire it following its restoration.

The artist, Michael Edmunds (1926-2014), an experienced collier, won a competition to design a mural for theMedical Research Council Pneumoconiosis Research Unit and this was subsequently donated to the hospitalby the South Wales branch of the National Union of Mine Workers in 1959. A Miners Treatment Centre hadbeen built at Llandough Hospital and was a resounding success, developing treatment, identification andprevention methods for the dreadful disease the miners called ‘dust’. At the time the mural was unveiled, the research unit led the world in the research of asbestos related lung disorders.

DECOMMISSIONING WHITCHURCHWith the new Hafan y Coed nearing completion, staff are understandably asking questions about thefuture for those departments who currently operatewithin the main Whitchurch Hospital building, butwho will not transfer to UHL with the adult mentalhealth inpatient service in April 2016.

It is the ultimate aim of the UHB to dispose ofWhitchurch Hospital and plans to providealternative accommodation for relevantdepartments are progressing. As you can imagine,it has not been an easy task to find suitableaccommodation to meet the different needs of all

the departments involved and thanks must beextended to those concerned for their patience. The UHB has recently approved alternative facilitiesand refurbishments to enable these remainingdepartments to move. It is anticipated that allaffected departments will be notified shortly andthe necessary staff consultation process set inmotion.

It should be noted that a number of Cardiff andVale UHB services, including the North and WestCardiff Locality Team base, and the DayOpportunities and Recovery Service in Park Lodgewill remain in their current locations in separatebuildings on the Whitchurch site, along with thoseservices in the Park Road Houses.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTHCELEBRATIONS

Service users who hadparticipated in, orcontributed to, thedesign of the newAdult Mental HealthUnit at Hafan y Coedwere given exclusiveaccess to see it first

hand before patient transfers take place in 2016.

Following the visit, Dean said: “As a service user Iam delighted with the new Unit. The layout hasbeen well thought out. The halls and rooms aremodern and bright. The security and safety systemsare amazing and will no doubt benefit the staff andpatients. The outside walking areas are spaciousand also have a wonderful view. This is a positivemove forward for mental health.”

Simone Joslyn, Clinical Project Lead, said: “It was aprivilege to show people with lived experience ofmental health problems around the new Unit andpoint out where their feedback and contributionhas made a difference to the project”.

The visit was in conjunction with a symposiumwhich was held at University Hospital Llandough(UHL) to start building relationships at the site. Thisis in preparation for the next stage when mentalhealth services transfer to their new unit at UHL.

The aim of the symposium was to promote staff andservices working together to ensure UHL provides ‘acentre of excellence for rehabilitation andrecovery’.

Annie Procter, Clinical Board Director for MentalHealth said: “The Mental Health Clinical Board weredelighted to welcome colleagues to the symposiumaimed at introducing services on the UHL site toeach other, in preparation for the arrival of MentalHealth services at Hafan y Coed in April 2016. Thesymposium enabled colleagues to share practicesthey are proud of, highlight common challengesand find ways to work together to the benefit ofservice users, carers and staff.

“The conclusion from the symposium was thatuseful information was shared and helpfulconversations were started, which will provide thebuilding blocks to facilitate integrated working atthe UHL site, with a particular focus on recovery”.

BETTER TOMORROWSWill Ford is a service userrepresentative on the project todevelop Hafan y Coed. Here herecounts his journey over the last10 years:-

“We grow better tomorrowswhen we plant good seedstoday”. Ten years ago I would

not have been able to contribute these ten wordsto the Hafan y Coed art project. Depression andagoraphobic tendencies affected me so badly Ifound it hard to believe I had any choices in life atall. I lived alone, barely spoke to anyone andavoided going out. The literal and emotionalisolation I experienced meant I felt there was nohope for a better tomorrow.

10 years later, my life is very different. I recentlypublished my second e-book, won a poetry slamand had a short film featured at the GlastonburyFestival. I have hosted and organized a number ofopen mic poetry events and find that other spokenword performers now ask me for advice. But there

was no sudden miracle recovery for me. This wassomething I had to approach one day at a time.Recovery is not a journey with a definitive end, butan ongoing approach to life, a path created partlyby the choices we make, the assistance we arewilling to seek or accept and the way we interpretthe things that happen to us, the way we perceiveourselves and how that affects how we thinkpeople perceive us.

Everything we experience, do, think or tell ourselvesis a seed that that is planted within ourselves andfed by what we say, do or think next. But as hard aslife gets, there is always something we can do ortell ourselves that will plant a seed within us thatcan lead to better tomorrows.

Ten years ago, I could not have believed an idea sosimple could sum up the way I now choose toapproach life. Being able to express myself freelyand creatively has given me a sense of release andled to me down avenues to explore that creativity.Had I chosen a different approach, I would not havebecome a Service User Representative nor been partof the arts project for Hafan y Coed and I would notbe writing about my experience.
