Helpful Hints on Growing Roses1. Choosing a Rose: Select a rose that fits in with your landscape. Roses come in all different sizes,
shapes, and growth habits. Refer to For Your Guidance below for more information on specific types of roses.
2. Plant your rose where they will receive at least 6 hours of sun daily. Roses grow best in soil rich in organic matter. The addition of organic matter will also help with drainage around your roses.
3. In New England the graft or bud union should be buried at least 2 inches below the soil line.4. Roses like cool roots. Keep a 3 inch layer of mulch around your roses to keep the roots cool and
moist.5. Start fertilizing in Spring when buds begin to open. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with Jack's Classic
Blossom Booster fertilizer. This can be used in combination with a slow release granular 4-3-2 fer-tilizer every month. After mid-August, only fertilize roses with bone meal. (Do not use a Nitrogen fertilizer after mid-August!)
6. To Care for Roses in Winter: 1. Clean up old leaves and spent flowers from ground. 2. Strip away any leaves left on plant. 3. Water deeply before ground freezes. 4. In late November mound the graft with 1 ft. of soil. When the mound freezes cover it with straw
to prevent freezing and thawing.7. Pruning: Cut back any dead or diseased canes. Remove crossing or crowded canes. Prune out any
very thin canes. In Spring reduce overall size by 1/3 to 1/2 after growth begins.8. Healthy roses provide beauty - stop and smell the flowers!
