The session which began in August ’14 is just about to culminate. School standards and rules are established before the new school year, with the hope that the home-school partnership will help us fulfill this commitment to excellence. At HPS we work together to build skills and knowledge, reinforce values and develop a sense of self-worth. The academic and co- curricular programmes are focused on intellectual and emotional development of students to make them confident, dynamic and successful young men. In this issue we have shared glimpses of our efforts and achievements. We are proud of our students who maximize their potential whenever they stand for competitions whether it be academics, sports or extracurricular. Junior Section Independence Day Independence Day is an occasion for Habibians to display their patriotic spirit, sing national songs, and to carry Pakistani flag with honour. The flag of the country was proudly unfurled atop by the student council members.

Various activities were organized in the form of skits, tableaus, national songs and

speeches. School’s aim to foster love for their country was met through activities during the month of August.

Art Competition The Art and Library departments of Junior Section arranged a Bookmark Exchange Activity. It was conducted in the month of October and was a simple, fun way of sharing the pleasure and delights of book quotes, developing love for reading and of making new friends in the school.

The students prepared Bookmarks using colour pencils as the medium. They wrote their favourite quotes on them. The bookmarks were then exchanged between the different classes. Each student got a bookmark which they will use for their library books.

Calligraphy Contest A colourful calligraphy contest was held on

21st Oct 2014 participated by the students of

Junior Section. The creative work was

displayed beautifully, speaking of the talent

and aesthetic sense of the juniors. The judges

selected the best and the positions were

announced.

Youm-e-Hussain (A.S.) In the memory of Shuhada-e-Karbala, Youm-e-Hussain (A.S) is organized every year with true spirit. The programme was organized on 19th November.

The students recited marsiyas, nohas and gave speeches on the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his fellows.

Green Clean Day On the 21st of November the entire Junior Section decided to go green by celebrating ‘Clean-up Day’. A circular was sent home a week prior asking the students to bring a sponge and a duster to school.

As this activity was planned for the later part of the day, students waited impatiently to begin their clean-up chores. The students were so excited that they kept taking out their sponges and dusters and asking to start the task because this was a totally new and exciting experience for them.

All the students were exceptionally cooperative and responsible as they carried out their task. They took the cleaning task with zeal and enthusiasm. The teachers monitored the students to maintain an organized session however, the boys were engaged in the cleaning activity and they did an excellent job of remaining neat and tidy while they worked. Later the domestic staff helped mop-up each class room.

The purpose of this activity was to develop an awareness of cleanliness and tidiness of the classrooms and of the school. The teachers made them understand that it is the duty of each one of us to help keep our environment clean as this is to everyone’s benefit.

Hobby Clubs The objective of establishing the hobby clubs was to encourage the students to develop the literary, artistic, scientific and social interpersonal skills.

The first Hobby Club started on 17th Nov 2014. Students of Class V joined various clubs according to their interest and showed great excitement and eagerness to work in collaboration.

Following Hobby Clubs were offered: English Speaking, English Drama Reading Club, Urdu Drama, Science Project Geography Project, Aerobic /dance, Music Club, Chess Club, Scrabble Club and Band, etc.

Music Competition Music competition was held in Junior Section

on 25th Nov’14. The students were prepared

for an intra class competition which was then

followed by an Inter Section Competition.

Students from Class 1-5 participated and

demonstrated their vocal skills.

Orientation The Orientation session for parents of Class I was held on 25th August 2014 to inform them about the school systems. Teachers introduced themselves and the management team shared school policies and procedures with the parents. This was followed by a question-answer session. Parental queries were answered by our Management Team.

Hand Washing session The students from classes 1-5 attended an interactive session on proper hand-washing techniques. Dr. Ayesha Usman conducted the program assisted by Dr. Shaista, and her team.

Dr. Ayesha gave the Introduction to inform the students about:

What are germs? How can we see them? How do they spread?

Demonstration of germs by using u/v light was a follow up. A video was shown focused on the basic principles that should be followed to avoid germs and diseases. A demonstration was also given on steps of hand washing.

Towards the end of the session the cleanest child was awarded. Other children were also given information booklets. Students enjoyed the video and demonstration.

Senior Section Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) Conference PAK-US Alumni Network (PUAN) hosted an entrepreneurship conference which was held in Islamabad from 21st-23rd November 2014, with respect to GEW - Global Entrepreneurship Week, which is the world's largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch start-ups that bring ideas of life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare.

GEW-PUAN was a private event and hence the selection process was very competitive with more than a thousand applicants of which only 300 were selected out of which two were Habibians - Danesh Kumar Badlani and Hamza Shafiq - and two ex-Habibians - Nabeel Mughal and Rahul Rai. They were able to obtain first-hand experience regarding entrepreneurship, leadership, and humanitarian services.

Best Delegate Award at BayMUN The Bay View College A-Level Section organized MUN (Model United Nations) which was held from 17 to 19 October 2014. Habib Public School was represented by a team of 8 students from Class X. There were total of 300 participants from various leading institutions such as the Karachi Grammar School, Indus Valley, Frobels, The City School, Beacon House System and many others.

The achievements of Habibians are: Shahpar Nafees received the Best

Delegate Award. Syed Muhammad Murtaza and Uzair

Qureshi received Honorary Mention Certificate.

Muhammad Ahsan received Best Position Paper Certificate.

Saad Zafer was recognized as special mention.

Global Inventors in training by iEARN Habib Public School participated in STEM-Engineering and Technology project called Global Inventors in Training, in collaboration with 'Level Up Village-Global STEM Based Learning.

Ten students participated under the supervision of one teacher. The program consisted of 10 sessions which were based on innovative and effective teaching strategies. The activities were designed for individual and pair work which catered to CAD designing, circuits making, and 3D printing. In this project, students were given the opportunity to exchange real life application of their own learning through video letters with their partner class in Stanwich School, New Jersey, USA.

This project brought a new scientific mindset and inspiration to innovators. The students were encouraged to develop their analytical skills and to use technology in creative ways. It also developed a sense of confidence among our students for what they will be able to implement in future.

Annual Youm-e-Hussain (A.S.) This year 39th Annual Youm-e-Hussain (A.S.) was organized on 25th Moharram 1436 i.e, November 19, 2014.

The Principal of Liaquat College of Management Sciences and a renowned Orator Prof. Baqar Zaidi was the Chief Guest. Programme was organized for the Senior Section and the High School. The students participated in Noha Khwani, Soaz, Salam and Speeches to pay tribute to the grandson of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions for the noble sacrifice at Karbala on 10th Moharram 61 Hijri.

The chief guest highlighted the event of Karbala and the cause of Imam Hussain’s (A.S.) great sacrifice. In the end Mr. Saleem Raza delivered the vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, teachers, students and administration of Habib Public School. The Programme ended with the distribution of Tabbaruk.

Inter-House Events

1. Art Competition Habibians participated with great enthusiasm in this competition.

Red House scored the first position, Green House 2nd and Blue House was 3rd.

2. Bait - Bazi Competition All participants came with complete preparation which led to an exciting competition. Habibian Mustafa Mehdi, Dibaj Abidi and Azhar Zaidi of Green House took the lead.

3. Bilingual Declamation Inter-House Bilingual Declamation was held on 16 October 2014. The competition was divided into two categories. Category 1: For classes VI-VII Category 2: For classes VII-X

Each house was represented by a team of 4 speakers for both English & Urdu categories. A debating series went on leading to first position taken by Huzaifa Tahir, Sharjeel Ameen and Ali Raza of Red house.

4. Husn-e-Qirat o Na’at The students’ representatives from each house participated in the event. Selected passages from Holy Quran and Naat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool (PBUH) were recited. Students learned the importance of recitation of the Holy Quran and learned about the life and the qualities of the Holy Prophet through Na’at.

5. Urdu Fehmi Competition The last wave of the Inter-House competitions was Urdu Fehmi. The students were provided with a booklet consisting of 1500 words. The judgement was based on spelling and pronunciation of the words.

Red house won the competition.

HPS Elections With the commencement of the new academic sessions came the time to elect the new office bearers of the Students’ Council. At HPS we continue this tradition to provide a fair opportunity to all students from XI Cambridge and X AKU to compete and win the students votes.

The votes were casted by the students in favour of their selected candidates. On September 11th, Mr. Saleem Raza announced the names of School Captain and Deputy School Captains.

Hamza Bin Aqeel from XI Cambridge was elected as School Captain whereas Hamza Raza from Cambridge and Jaffer Abbas from AKU were selected as Deputy School Captains for the year 2014-15.

Students’ Council This Year the 51st Students’ Council was selected as a part of HPS tradition. The selected students took their Oath of office. In this they vowed to do their best to maintain discipline in the School.

HPS is continuing this tradition to inculcate the leadership qualities in the students.

Convocation Ceremony 2014 The Habib Public School’s Convocation Ceremony for the graduating batch of the year 2013-14 was held on Thursday October 23rd at the School Gymnasium. Mr. Saeed Allawala, alumni and chairman ATCO laboratories was the Chief Guest.

The entire programme went on formally. The certificates and shields were distributed among the fresh alumni and high achievers in different areas of studies.

In the end, the Chief Guest shared his experience and achievements as a Habibian from the batch of 1970 and congratulated the graduating batch.

International Scientific League of PAYA Habibian Abdullah Idrees of class X-B qualified for the test for International scientific league of PAYA that took place in Iran. The competition was held on 24th August, 2014 in which participating countries were Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Oman and Lebanon.

First second and third positions were taken by Iran and fourth position was secured by HPS-Pakistan. All boarding and lodging was borne by PAYA.

Campus Drives Habib University and other A-Level Schools visited Habib Public School to give presentations on awareness and future

study options for students. Habib University The Habib University’s presentation was aimed at providing information and salient features of the Habib University for higher education, and assisting students on making an informed choice. The presentation began with an interactive session with the students in which they were asked to write down a word of their interest and then write some sentences including the word which reflected their own personality. Other areas of discussion were some of the

interesting courses offered at the University such as ‘Liberal Arts’, ‘Social Development and Policy’ as well as engineering courses such as ‘Computer Science’ and ‘Electrical Engineering’.

Students were also engaged throughout the presentation by a Q/A session and short activities conducted by the team. Once the presentation was completed, students were given packages consisting of pamphlets and files containing contact information and more material regarding University’s offerings.

The Generations School The Generations School’s team proposed important career options and plans for students pursuing further studies and admissions criteria. They offered courses and subjects along with extra-curricular activities students could participate in. The presentation concluded with an F.A.Q s session in which students shared some of their apprehensions and concerns.

Nixor College Nixor College is a private A-levels school which caters to students from various socio-economic backgrounds. The Dean of Nixor College and Head of Admission Department, together with ex-Habibians Ateeq Pasha and Ahmed Hassan paid a visit to Habib Public School to make a presentation.

Dawn Spelling Bee The 10th Dawn Education Spelling Bee competition was held on 27th Oct. Thirty renowned schools of Karachi including Habib Public School were a part of the competition. HPS team of middle section consisted of Habibian Faiq Ahmed, Basim Mehmood and Shamir Shaukat. HPS took 6th position and were awarded with the certificates.

Inter-College Bilingual Declamation Competition On Thursday November 27th, Baharia College (NORE 1) organized an Inter-College Bilingual Declamation Competition. Habibians Qazi Muhammad Talha for English and Hasnain Syed for Urdu participated. All in all 31 colleges took part

in this contest. “The speeches delivered in both the languages were simply outstanding”, commented the chief guest. The chief guest was Dr. Nauman Naqvi, Interim Dean – from Habib University. In the end the English speaker from HPS received the SPECIAL AWARD.

Project Report iEARN 2.014 Photojournalism Heritage Hunger and Food Security To understand the concept of hunger and food security iEARN with collaboration with USA, Pakistan and Tajikistan provided a platform project called Heritage Hunger and Food Security.

Following this project, students also planted their own kitchen garden inside the school vicinity. The regional workshop and exhibition was held at Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan.

Three students were selected from Pakistan out of which one student Azhar Zaidi and one teacher M. Raza were from HPS. Photographs rated as the best 20 selected from Paksitan were from Habib Public School. Habibians and teacher were awarded Diploma in Photography.

14th Annual Inter School Debate Habib Public School English debating team comprised of Habibian Raeed Waseem and Muhammad Hamza Raza participated in Inter Institutional debate organized jointly by Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club of Karachi on October 30, 2014.

16 prominent schools of Karachi took part in the debate contest.

The topic of the debate was “Empowering Women is the only way to Progress” Habibian Raeed Waseem won the second prize.

SIUT Art Competition The third painting exhibition was arranged by Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, SIUT. The theme of the painting exhibition was ‘Good health is the key to happiness”. Habibian Azhan Ali of Class VII-P achieved first position.

High School Section

Students Counseling Session On Thursday, September 4th, 2014, student counseling seminar was conducted by certified clinical psychologists Hina Sardar and Shamaila Aziz.

The purpose of the seminar was to make students learn how to withstand the stresses and strains of academic life and how to do effective decision making. The session proved to be worthwhile for our young men. The students were given tips to manage their day to day academic and non academic issues.

Back to School Fair Visit Registered students of Habib Public High School attended the Back to School Fair at Pearl Continental on Sunday, September 14th, 2014. The fair was organized by the United States Education Foundation where alumni of over 35 U.S institutions provided information about their own alma mater to students. Students were provided information regarding the programs, scholarships, application procedures,visa and about the campus life.

Oath Taking Ceremony On November 12th 2014, tie distribution ceremony was held in the auditorium. College Captain and Deputy Heads were given their ties.

The Vice Principal, Ms Shahwar Ahmad and Senior Coordinator Ms. Shialla Murtaza handed over ties to College Captain; Hamza Amin(XII Science), Deputy Captains; Syed Asad Hassan Naqvi, Shayan Hemani, Ammar Raza (XI Science) and Sameed(XI Commerce).

Sports at HPS Inter School Swimming Championship The Habib Public School hosted an Inter School Swimming Championship on Saturday 8th November 2014. Thirteen schools participated.

The Habib Public School came up as Champions with a huge lead (141 points). HBL / PVCA Inter School Cricket Championship. Habibians participated in an Inter School Cricket Championship organized by HBL / Pakistan Veteran Cricket Association 40 over tournament.

Tour to Steel Cadet College The Habibians were invited by the Steel Cadet

College to play a friendly series of Cricket,

Football, Table Tennis and Hockey matches.

This was a memorable tour for our teams. HPS

won Football and Table Tennis matches.

Aman Foundation Inter School U - 17 Cricket Championship. Habibians participated in an Inter School Cricket Championship organized by Aman Foundation.

NBP / Geo Super Inter School

Cricket Championship Habibians participated in an Inter School Cricket Championship organized by NBP / Geo Super 20-twenty tournament. HPS made up to the quarter finals. The quarter final match was telecasted live on Geo

Super. Inter School Hockey U – 16 Tournaments at HPS Habib School, as its tradition hosted an Inter School Hockey Tournament for under 16. This was an invitational tournament and it was conducted with the permission of PHF.

Eight renowned schools participated. The final was played between HPS and Ghulaman-e-Abbas on 2nd December 2014.

After a tough competition the match ended in a draw. As per FIH rules GOLDEN GOAL TIME was given to decide the match. Zohair Abbas scored a GOLDEN GOAL for HPS .This was a great success for HPS as we managed to

bring the Championship Trophy back after 7

years.

Inter School Hockey U – 14 Tournament at HPS HPS took an initiative to introduce Inter School Hockey Tournament for U-14 age group. This was an invitational tournament and it was conducted with the permission of PHF.

Eight renowned schools were invited to participate in under 14 age category. HPS got the Championship while BVS stood 2nd. The final was played between these two teams. HPS dominated and managed to win the Championship Trophy for U- 14 Tournament.

Football Tournament This year HPS took initiative to host Inter

School Football Tournament. A large number

of schools responded for this tournament as

Football is gearing popularity.

16 teams of different schools were shortlisted.

The final was played between The City School

and KN Academy. KN Academy managed to

win the Championship Trophy.

1st HPS U – 14 Inter School

Football Tournament HPS took initiative to host Inter School

Football Tournament for U - 14 category as

well. 16 teams were part of the Tournament.

HPS managed to reach to the semifinal and lost

to Karachi Grammar.

The final was played between KGS and KN

Academy Malir. KN Academy managed to win

the Tournament. In both the categories tough

competition was witnessed and best teams

were victorious.
