Welcome to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. Our three Academies provide an education for children aged 3 – 18 in South London. We have been educating young people in this part of London since 1876 and throughout that time our

approach has been epitomised by high standards and academic excellence, a tradition that continues today. Our values of aspiration and achievement, personal responsibility, self-discipline and mutual respect are evident in all our work and result in young people who develop and grow as independent, resourceful and resilient individuals.

Our commitment is that, working in partnership with you, we can ensure your child gets the best possible start in life. All children and young people who attend our schools have the opportunity to gain academic qualifications to equip them well for the next stage of their life, but we provide so much more than that. Our vision is that by the time young people leave us they will have experienced a whole range of opportunities that not only build their mind, but also build their character. As a result they are fully prepared to be successful in their adult lives as workers, as parents and as partners.

Adrian Percival – Chief Executive

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S WELCOME

On behalf of all the students and staff at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our school. There is a very dynamic atmosphere here at the Academy not least because we are an all-through school in the process of extending our provision in both the primary phase and into the Sixth Form. All students are expected to stay within education to the age of 18 and we hope they will stay with the Academy.

Our curriculum is largely a challenging academic one, designed to ensure all our pupils can reach their potential and acquire the knowledge and qualifications which have currency in the real world. We provide a very strong focus on core subjects - English, mathematics and science – and believe the curriculum offer is greatly enhanced by our subject specialisms in technology and music.

We value our place within the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation and work closely with colleagues from the other schools to share expertise and benefit from one another’s strengths. At Crayford we are therefore able to capitalise on a tradition of outstanding educational provision spanning over a hundred years. All staff take advantage of Federation professional development opportunities, guaranteeing commitment from

everyone to provide personalised challenge and exceptional support for our students. Crayford Academy has successfully hosted the Federation Conference for 650 teaching and support staff, the focus being professional development and our commitment to raising standards as a team.

We are very proud of the environment in which we work and our students feel the same. Facilities for learning and recreation are first class, purpose built, safe and allow us to cater for a wide range of abilities. We have very high expectations of behaviour and uniform, codes of conduct are clear and we insist students behave respectfully towards others and their environment.

Crayford Academy is very popular with parents and children and brings stability and self-esteem to all involved. In total we serve more than 1400 students across the Crayford and Slade Green sites. As Principal, I am determined that this school, our staff and students will make a positive difference to the community. I look forward to meeting you and working in partnership to secure the very best education for your child.

YEAR 7 our sTudenTs develop And GroW inTo independenT, resourceful And resilienT individuAls.

The Academy offers, wherever possible, single-sex teaching in years 7 – 11. It is the view of the Federation that pupils in the secondary phase learn more effectively in single-sex classes. However, the benefits of a co-educational community are recognised and all house, enrichment and extra-curricular activities are co-educational. The achievement of boys and girls is equally matched and we aim to satisfy the aspirations and goals of all our students. The best standards of behaviour are expected based on our values of mutual respect, self-discipline and self- confidence; and these high standards encourage respect for tradition while embracing innovation by joining up learning and opening up the world.

We see parents as partners in the education of their children and will keep them informed of their child’s progress regularly at each stage of their education.

The curriculum at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is balanced and challenging throughout the school, ensures accessibility to all and is tailored to the needs of the individual. The curriculum is designed to advance every student, not only academically, but also socially and morally, in line with the aims, vision and ethos of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. We pride ourselves in having a curriculum that combines thinking and learning; our curriculum provides all students with the opportunity to be enterprising and to work successfully with others of all ages. The curriculum is delivered through a variety of media, including the use of ICT as an effective learning tool. Effective teaching ensures differentiation for a variety of abilities, and there is extra support for special needs, gifted and talented and English as an additional language. Throughout, the curriculum takes into account the strengths and areas for development of each student. In order to do this, the progress and attainment of each student is closely monitored. The curriculum is flexible enough to allow students to progress at a rate that is appropriate to their abilities. Our students develop into articulate, confident young adults who do not shy away from being successful.

The Academy specialism of technology is a key part of the curriculum. At all levels, students are assessed on a regular basis and their progress carefully monitored as this is an essential tool in raising academic achievement.

KEY STAGE 3 (KS3)

Students follow a common curriculum in mainly mixed ability and where possible single-sex classes. Differences in ability are addressed by differentiation of tasks and activities both in the classroom and for home study. Students study modern foreign languages, humanities, art, drama and PE as well as the core subjects; English, mathematics, science and the specialisms, technology, music and ICT.

KEY STAGE 4 (KS4)

Crayford Academy is at the forefront of curriculum development and will utilise the full resources available within the Federation. The Federation is committed to developing a full range of courses, which will allow all students, irrespective of ability, to access a curriculum which is appropriate to them.

Both academic and vocational routes will be available to students. Within the academic route, in addition to the core subjects of mathematics, science, English, design and technology (specialism) and physical education, students will choose three option subjects to be studied at KS4. The choices offered will be wide and varied and will be designed to provide an appropriate pathway for each student. Students will receive expert guidance on their choices of pathway from subject and careers staff as well as form tutors.

REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT

At all stages, students’ progress is regularly assessed and reported to parents. On-going assessment is essential in developing a curriculum to suit the needs of all our students.

The entire Haberdashers’ family of schools are well known for their high levels of achievement in music. It is encouraged and nurtured at Crayford Academy, contributing much to its ethos and spirit.

We have a team of instrumental peripatetic tutors who work at the Academy. Students who have been awarded a music place will automatically be entitled to individual instrumental lessons. More spaces for Academy funded lessons are available through a selection process including an aptitude session. We have links with the Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) which suitable musicians would be encouraged to audition for. Music place holders will be included in the activities and events run for Gifted and Talented students in music. These include trips, visiting musicians, workshops and outreach teaching to younger children within the Academy. Students are

entered for external practical examinations and theory examinations when they reach the necessary required standard.

There is a cycle of public events involving the music department including the annual Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy carol service, a recital held in Southwark Cathedral, Deputation Day, the annual school musical/production, Founder’s Day service and our annual Eisteddfod. All members of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy are encouraged to develop their musical potential, and all musicians are expected to develop their abilities as singers and instrumentalists. Crayford Academy music students are expected to give up their time generously to support a wide range of academy and Federation events.

Crayford Academy promotes excellence in all aspects of technology education, with all students engaging with technology in all key stages. It uses its specialist status to raise standards of achievement and the quality of learning in design and technology. In addition to this, the curriculum has a strong mathematics and science focus across all age and ability ranges. The specialism permeates all areas of the curriculum and is evident throughout the Academy. It contributes to whole school improvement by developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning. It is a requirement that all students study a technology subject up to the end of KS4

CAREERSCareer Guidance and Career Exploration are integral to a student’s development and growth at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy and serves as a preparation for our students transition to adulthood. The presence of career-related activities provide the connection between learning and earning, equipping our pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to enter and thrive in the working world.

Work-related activities and educational visits are just two of the many ways in which the Academy liaises with business and industry to show the link between learning and earning. Our students also have the opportunity to attend career fairs, industry talks, insight days, career workshops and industry visits.

EXTEnDIng THE CURRICULUM EXpERIEnCE The Academy provides an extensive range of enrichment activities, which includes off-site educational activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) scheme. Enrichment gives both breadth and the opportunity for cross-curricular work within the Academy and also across the Federation as a whole. It is compulsory for all students in years 7 to11 to participate in a wide programme of activities.

Enrichment activities are timetabled mainly out of the normal Academy timetable (i.e. before morning registration, lunchtime, after school) but in addition to this, activities could involve students in residential stays away from school and will take place during and out of

term time as appropriate, e.g. D of E expeditions. In addition to the opportunities mentioned above, a wide range of extended time is provided within departments to enhance the basic curriculum. For example, in technology a robotics club may run after school or in science an astronomy club

Enrichment gives both breadth and the opportunity for cross-curricular work within the Academy and provides a perfect opportunity for our older pupils to work with the primary children. The enrichment programme is a key element of our all-through curriculum. All pupils are expected to involve themselves fully in these additional activities.
