LANDSCAPE OF CONTRASTS >>> FACTS & FIGURES Team: Ankit Bhargava Josephine van Lohuizen Rochelle Wolvers Tess Stribos Victor Nyman Program: net transformation urban area 6300 ha. residential 260 ha. commercial 4090 ha. infrastructure 42 km. water 1100 ha. houses 15000 Type: thematic / integral realistic / idealistic strategy / blueprint This project speculates the role and position of Haarlemmemeer in the context of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region (AMR) for the Year 2040. The current visions all show a strong inclination for further strengthening of Amsterdam city as a super centrality drawing no active participation from Haarlemmemeer. In order for urban regions to be competitive and achieve global visibility, they need to create zones of specialized identity, and in AMR Haarlemmeer is a sub- urban service core. However, proximity to urban cores, recreation zones in the periphery, location on regional infrastructure and expansive open space provide immense potential. So, in order to become more attractive, the project uses 2 strategies. The first is to enhance local qualities by adding new connections and new programmes. This will bring fragmented quality landscape in closer reach and bring new people and businesses. The second strategy is to use the adjacency to Schiphol to develop a symbiotic urbanity through blending of the daily urban system of Schiphol and the city – (opening the box, concept). The ambition is to create a unique/contrasting identity for Haarlemmemmer which will open up the region to a much larger range qualities and interactions. In turn, this will lead to making Randstad a more competitive urban region. AIRPORT POLDER

Haarlemmemeer Waterfront

This project looks at how two of the available tools (demand for regional water storage and housing) can be used to bring new qualities and make Haarlemmemeer more attractive. The project is to be developed gradually in stages so as to consciously find a new dynamic at local level in which inherent agriculture can also become a part of the urban fabric. The grid is used as a structuring system which defines movement corridors, their tempo and character while the interior pockets are flexible and each can have individual character. The height and slope of the dykes along the grid are to define how water/green are relatable and whether water is for rain-catchment or is deep enough for recreation.
