Board of Trustees

Dear Friends of HABcore,

This report features both HABcore’s growth and the individual stories of our residents. As HABcore adds new apartments each month, we are pleased to welcome more families into the independent living program.

The 2016-2017 Strategic Plan that was approved at the February Board of Trustees meeting is a reflection of HABcore’s growth in the past several years, and a preparation for the future. The Strategic Plan will serve as a road map as the committees will create and implement action steps. The synergy and collective effort of the HABcore board, staff, volunteers and supporters will be needed to ensure the achievement of the plan’s ambitious goals.

As highlighted by the strategies in the new plan, our goal is to strengthen HABcore’s presence in the community, align staff and volunteers to facilitate growth, reinforce efforts to provide safe and secure housing and supportive services, and continue to enrich residential life. Several times during the year we will measure our efforts to meet our goals. I hope you will follow our achievements by reading our monthly e-blasts and frequent Facebook posts.

Thank you to our generous supporters who give HABcore the financial stability to make dreams come true. We know there are homeless veterans, families and individuals awaiting perma-nent, supportive and safe homes in our Monmouth and Ocean County communities. With your unwavering support, we will address their needs.

In appreciation,

-Susan Harbison

Changing Lives

.

This past June marked two years that Carrie, George and Steven have

been part of HABcore’s program. George continues to work full-time (he

just received a raise!), coach two sports, and volunteer with the local fire

department. Three-year-old Steven’s speech has significantly improved

since beginning the Early Intervention program, and he now greets his

HABcore case manager by name each time she visits. Carrie has been

working with his therapist and caseworker for the last few months in order

to transition Steven into preschool. Once Steven is settled into his new

school routine, Carrie plans to return to work part-time.

Daniela celebrated her one-year HABcore anniversary on November 28,

2015. The occasion was even sweeter than she expected as she started a

new job as an office manager for a local architectural firm the week before

Thanksgiving. Daniela is planning to transition to working full-time once

she is able to save up enough money for a car, making her job more

accessible. Daniela tearfully shared with her case manager that she can-

not imagine where she would be without HABcore, and credits the program

with the fact that she finally feels “normal” again after years of trying to

manage her health and her life while being homeless.

Esperanza and her sons, Jose and Jonathan, moved

into the program in August 2015. Esperanza suffers

from mental health issues and is attending a daily pro-

gram to help her develop skills to manage her illness.

Jose graduated high school in June and will be

attending community college while working. Jonathan

attends the local high school and is on track to

graduate in June of 2017.

HABcore has provided this family the stability and sup-

port needed for Esperanza to receive care while Jose

and Jonathan continue their education and dream of a

bright future without the worry of homelessness.

Our Volunteers

“The impact of volunteers is immeasurable. Not only does it help alleviate a strained budget, it gives our residents a

sense of community. It is very comforting to our residents to know that people care enough to take time to teach

them a skill, make them a special meal, or introduce them to a recreational activity they otherwise would not have

the opportunity to experience,”

-Executive Director Steve Heisman.

The Tower Hill Men’s Group donated their time and

resources to install a new kitchen at Coffey Residence.

HABcore’s President Emerita Marilyn Pearlman was recognized

at the 2015 Women Making a Difference Junior League Lunch-

eon. Marilyn has been instrumental in HABcore’s growth and is

always ready to help. She served as president for 8 years and

has continued to keep HABcore a priority. Marilyn is pictured

here with New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno and

Junior League President Shannon Dolan.

Girl Scout Troop #366 from Little Silver organized a household

supply drive for HABcore residents. The troop took a tour of

Coffey Residence to see where there efforts will pay off and

learn more about the HABcore program.

Volunteers from The Social Concerns Committee of St. Anthony

of Padua take time to prepare meals at Coffey Residence.

The Keller Williams Realty team from the Shrewsbury office spent a

day at Laurel House planting, painting and making repairs.

Our Boarding Homes

Our boarding homes in Red Bank and Asbury Park provide supportive housing for 51 residents.

Our boarding home residents enjoy a family-like atmosphere with 24 hour staff and three nutritious

meals a day. Our residents have access to supportive services and HABcore’s Residential Life

committee plans extra activities to create a stimulating environment and promote community. This

year, the committee planned many activities such as birthday bingo, art classes, yoga classes,

computer mentoring, mini golf, barbeques, bowling and a beach outing.

Ira moved into the Coffey Residence in January of 2015. Ira had been living in

various residential healthcare facilities after his permanent healthcare facility had

to close after Superstorm Sandy. Ira has schizophrenia and has had several

health complications that have led to hospitalization. Ira’s mental illness com-

bined with his health issues caused him to experience delusional thoughts, which

made basic communication with others and the completion of daily activities a

struggle. Ira needed direction with day to day life skills. The individualized sup-

port Ira has received since entering our program has helped stabilize his health

issues, and helped him significantly improve his overall level of functioning and

rational thought. He is now able to initiate and maintain conversations with staff,

other residents, and his family is thrilled with his transformation. During a recent

visit, Ira’s sister said she hasn’t seen her brother function at this level in 20 years,

also adding that she feels like she has her brother back.

Independent Living

In 2015, our independent living program provided 108 individuals, including 17 families, with the support-

ive services they need to rebuild their lives. This program offers affordable housing to the homeless with

special needs who are capable of living in a supportive, independent setting.

In August 2015, 12 new clients, including 3 families, moved into the newly renovated 8 unit property in

Beachwood. Renovations were funded by grants from the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, Rob-

in Hood Foundation, HMFA and HUD. Anne and her son had been homeless off and on for 10 years and

were the first residents to move into the new property. Just days after their move, her son celebrated his

11th birthday, his first birthday in a safe home. “It’s wonderful to see the progress and hear more

and more about families like Anne and her son who are moving into safe and secure housing situ-

ations after Sandy. The Relief Fund appreciates the commitment and compassion volunteers, do-

nors and nonprofits have brought to our state. We are proud to be a partner and funder of your

work.” - First Lady Mary Pat Christie, Chair of the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund

Our Future

Goals for 2016

Continue to increase the number of homeless people served in the

independent living program and enhance the boarding home program.

Develop 4 additional units in Eatontown through the purchase of property from the Affordable

Housing Alliance

Increase the HUD-funded independent living program in Monmouth County by 25 units

Further our reach into Ocean County by developing 8 more units for homeless and disabled indi-

viduals and families using funds granted to Ocean County from HUD

Further develop our mentoring program for residents in the boarding homes and the independ-

ent living program

Maintain and Improve our Existing Properties

Resurface and stain the front porch of Laurel House

Install an egress door on the first floor of the Malley House

Repair and refinish the handicap ramp and install security lighting at the Coffey Residence

Install security lighting at the Beachwood property

Replace the bilco door and paint the foundation at the River Street property

“In the mid-eighties we began to see an increasing number of

homeless on our streets and then our worst fear happened.

Three homeless men died on the streets of Red Bank. A small

group of people took action and in 1988 they founded HABcore.

We started with five residents at our first home and today we

serve over 170 people. We provide more than housing. We

provide a home and a family that allow our residents to regain

their self-respect. Once again, their lives are filled with dignity

and hope. That’s the best medicine to get them back on their

feet. I’m proud to be a part of the family of HABcore supporters

and I know my gift will help many more in the years to come.”

-Gere Coffey, HABcore Trustee
