EDITOR’S NOTE Dear readers,

Our howling dog has a reason to howl tonight. Putting together a tribute page for Tiki Friezer (page 3) was hard, not only because she will be sorely missed, but because summing up what she has given the dog world is near impossible. Over the past week, I have seen tributes pour in from Sydney, from regional NSW, from interstate, as she touched so many lives with her passion for dogs, motorsport, and so much more.

As one of the newest instructors at Hills, I didn't know Tiki long. But I first came to the club one night when the club was hosting a lecture, and I was invited by the speaker himself. My friends and I sat nervously on the nearest empty chairs, not knowing if any of these seasoned instructors, comfortable with their community, wanted anything to do with us. Would anyone even talk to us? Luckily, we were sat next to Tiki, who struck up

a conversation to tell us about tracking. (Shocking, I know.) So we decided Hills wasn't so scary after all, and yes, a couple of us from that night are now instructors.

In producing the Instructor Feature series, I have been inspired to hear how much passion and consideration is behind the work of all of our instructors. No matter whether they instruct at club to sharpen

their training skills, people skills or even just for a bit of downtime ('Steady as she Goes', page 5), they all have our members' and their dogs' best interests at heart. And with National Volunteer Week just past, what better time to both acknowledge and celebrate that we are a volunteer-run organisation. It's not easy, but we're proud of it.

Tiki FriezerRemembered

It is with great sadness that we note the sudden passing of Tiki Friezer . She was our club secretary and trial secretary, as well as an active member at Hills for many years . Tiki was also an ANKC Judge of Obedience, Rally and Tracking for over 35 years, a member of the DogsNSW Obedience and Tracking committee, and a long-time member of many other dog training and breed clubs, including the German Shepherd Dog League of NSW .

Tiki had a passion for tracking; in recent years she gained a TDX and a Tracking Championship with both her German Shepherd Dog Elka and Elka’s daughter Eva . She established and donated the Vic Friezer Memorial Trophy for Tracking in memory of her father, a founding member of the Tracking and Rescue Dog Club of NSW . She herself presented it to tracking champions each year . Despite her many commitments and duties, Tiki always had time for beginners: she mentored countless obedience triallers and stewards over the years . She has been part of the framework of Hills for so many years and she will be sorely missed .

TIKI, TRIBUTES AND STORIESIt rained persistently from the early morning during the autumn trial day in Blacktown in 2016. Inside the ring, there stood a judge in a navy raincoat and a broad-brimmed hat, looking calm and not in the least troubled by the weather. That was Tiki. Her smile warmed the stiffened air. I will always remember her peaceful smile.

Tomoko Koyama

I always thought I had a special relationship with Tiki as she encouraged me, first with Honey and then with Henri, to keep going with my trailing. Whether it was the Rally Ring at the Club, or bringing Henri and me back into the ring after she had finished judging when he wouldn’t come off the start peg, celebrating when he finally passed heeling or letting me be part of the stays even though we hadn’t qualified. I realise now, that there are many, many people who feel this special bond with Tiki, because she was such a special person.

Barbara Horsfield

While trying to come to terms with the profoundly sad and untimely loss of Tiki, I have been recalling some lovely conversations we had, usually in the car park at Hills! Here are three short reminiscences.

One gift that Tiki kept well hidden was her musical talent. How many people realised she was an accomplished pianist, having gained her A. Mus. A. through the Australian Music Examinations Board? This is no mean feat, and to perform at this level requires a technical fluency and sensitivity of musical expression that few people possess. How I would have loved to hear her play!

Another memory is of someone who was willing to give without expecting anything in return. I experienced this generosity on several occasions; the most recent of these was when she gave Natalie Conway & me some free lessons in Tracking, the dog sport she most loved. I am so grateful to her for sharing her expertise.

Tiki loved my dog, Chaz (as I’m sure she loved many of our dogs). Every Monday night, Chaz would gleefully greet his human friends in the Hills office, and Tiki was one of the ladies who was always pleased to see him and give him a special pat... and every email I ever received from Tiki was signed off with the postscript “with special hugs to my boy”.

Vale dear Tiki, I will miss you.

Genevieve Young

I first met Tiki nearly 30 years ago when I started trialling my Dalmatian Chloe. She was an encouraging judge who was passionate about dog sports. Over the years renewal time for Hills became a running joke between Tiki & until this day as I would wave a renewal form at a distance requesting money.Tiki was a weath of knowledge not only in the dog world which she was passionate about. I will miss our chats and our club will be the poorer for her passing.

Janet Power

Tiki always welcomed me when I arrived on Tuesdays. Molly my cocker absolutely loved her. There was always a hug and treat for her and she was eager to see her. Her smiling face and wonderful demeanor will always be remembered. It’s so nice to know she was doing what she loved. We are going to miss her. Rip Tiki

Jo Barnes

The Tiki I knew was a very private person, a gentle lady who gave her all to the doggy world. It as always a pleasure to compete under Tiki as judge as she put you at ease with her kind helpful words. She also had a certain sparkle in her eyes, delighting in what she was doing.

TAKE NOTE

STEADY AS SHE GOES by Ellen Mok

Club instructor, RAN leading seaman, valet, sommelier… Jess Vujcich wears a lot of hats. But even as she enjoys different roles, she’s also on the lookout for bigger and better ones.

You would be forgiven for thinking that instructing obedience classes is stressful. Or, at the very least, tiring. But for Jess Vujcich, training and teaching at Hills is her scheduled weekly relaxation time. Training her border collies Indie and Nero in advanced classes and instructing beginners classes on Monday nights are the “stress-free” parts of her week, she claims.

This is not because Jess doesn’t work hard at what she does. Her calm, steady demeanour puts those around her at ease, so it can take deeper conversation to reveal her drive and ambition. Her long dark-blonde hair is always neatly tied back and her clothes sensible, and she looks you in the eye ready for whatever task is ahead. Whether that be teaching obedience, competing with her dogs, or serving VIPs on the Admiral Hudson.

Jess considers time at Hills to be relaxing because she has spent the past nine years in the Royal Australian Navy. She currently serves as Personal Assistant to Commander Australian Fleet.

“I started out doing my initial recruit training,” she explains. “After that I did my category training – I’m a Leading Seaman, Maritime Logistics Support Operations. My core roles at sea and ashore include being Valet to Senior Officers, Function Operations, Standing Sea Fire Party, Special Medical Emergency Team, Flight Deck, and Boarding Party.”

Jess has spent a few years on different ships – two of which, HMAS Darwin and HMAS Sydney, have since been decommissioned. After marrying her husband Brent, an Air Combat Officer, she returned to spend two years on a Royal Australian Air Force base in a supply position. Jess

CALL FOR NOMINATIONSDue to our recent loss of Tiki, our Club Secretary and Trial Secretary, we are now calling for nominations for those positions. Ideally the club would like to see a candidate come through who has had some experience in committees but if you are keen but lack experience we are happy to help you. Should you feel able and willing, we would very much like to hear from you.

The HDC Committee.

“I was the only navy person walking around a RAAF unit – which was great!” She grins. “A different experience.”

She has now been PA to the Fleet Commander for two years.

“It’s basically like—” She pauses, frowning. “My job is similar to—” A longer pause this time before she tries again. “It’s almost like being a—”

Unable to find a direct comparison, she tries a different tack. “What do I do on a day-to-day basis? I will – most important – support the Fleet Commander. I maintain his uniforms. I do a lot of drive support for all of our senior leadership group in the defence force, so on any given day I might be asked to drive the Chief of the Defence Force somewhere, if he’s in Sydney.”

She recalls a recent incident driving an admiral through the city but needing to find an alternate route due to traffic incidents. Driving in the city can be a challenge for anyone; the added pressure of transporting VIPs must be something else. But it’s hard to imagine the calm, composed Jess succumbing to the effects of road rage. It’s obvious that any stress she feels is due to her determination to do her job – any job – well.

But her biggest role as the Admiral’s PA is the functions. “As my boss likes to call it, the hospitality we provide in my office- we are basically the weapons of international engagement.”

These functions, held on the Admiral Hudson, involve meetings of VIPs, such as a meeting of the Chief of the Defence Force and his counterparts from all over the world. A lunch or dinner is held for these small groups, with the aim of setting up a relaxed environment for the delegates before they get down to business.

Jess works closely with the chef in menu planning, and even pairs the food with wine and beverages. She is taking courses in wine matching, an opportunity she enjoys. There is a lot of planning and paperwork to be done, but she finds it fulfilling.

“I get to step out of the office, every now and then, deliver a

small little function to these important people, and set up that conversation for them. So I'm extremely proud of doing that for the Navy.”

She recounts one of her most memorable functions. “The most important person I’ve

Indie and Nero

ever served would be the Director of the CIA, who works directly for the President of the United States.

That was hectic because there was a lot of police, on the water, in the air, and I was on the boat with bodyguards there, and I was like, ‘ooh, if he’s a target, I’m a target.’ Nothing happened, but you realise how important they are when you’ve got all this security around you.”

Risk aside, it’s clear Jess relishes the opportunity. “It’s amazing to be able to meet those kinds of people and deliver any little form of service that I can. And they get to go out on Sydney Harbour – I mean, who doesn’t want to do that!”

Because of her busy job, when she started the course to become a Hills instructor, Jess was unsure if she would be able to complete it. But although it wasn’t easy juggling her time, she made it work.

Page 7: H wler - Hills Dog Club › wp-content › uploads › Hills... · 2018-06-22 · autumn trial day in Blacktown in 2016. Inside the ring, there stood a judge in a navy raincoat and

p. 7 HILLS HOWLER -JUNE 2018

A big reason for this was because she found it very motivating to be able to use her newfound knowledge to help others. “You’re not just helping – capturing – people in class every night, but your friends, your family, other dogs if you are walking past dogs in the street. You can help everyone out by doing the instructing classes.”

She’s pleased to hear that the club’s next instructors’ course will be held later this year, and urges members to give it a go. (Early next year, a little birdy told me so - Tony) “If I can do it working full time in a busy Admiral’s office… everyone should do it. No matter how old or young you are, give it a go, because it'll help you train your own dog as well. And like I said, capture everybody.”

Jess and Bert, the Admiral's pooch

Jess herself is determined to keep progressing in all aspects of her life. After teaching Beginners 1-4 at Hills last year, this year she has taken on teaching Beginners 5-8 and relishes the new challenges. She believes that her current role in the navy is the crème-de-la-crème of her category and is looking at how to progress in the Defence Force, even if it means going back to university or commissioning as an officer.

“It'll take a long time to get there,” she says matter-of-factly. “But… like I said, from where I started to where I am now, it took 9 years. From that shy little girl at recruit school, when people see me now they're like, ‘Jess, you're totally different.’ And I think [for] maturity as well… that's what you need to do... Each year that goes by, you just think of something that you want to do and do it.”

SERVICE AWARDS

by Genevieve Young

The importance of volunteers in Hills Dog Club is inestimable, and without them there would be no Club.

We currently have around 80 instructors and affiliated workers, a good percentage of

whom turn up week after week, to keep the Club running. These people are the lifeblood of Hills.

One of the ways Hills Dog Club recognises the dedication of its volunteers is by giving Service Awards equating to every five years of service. At the General Meeting on Monday 9th May,

Gordon, Pam, Kathy and Robyn

Doesn’t feel like all that time has passed since we did the instructors course together, along with Pat, Deirdre and Joanne. A special award from a special and giving Club. So many opportunities for learning over the years and so many special memories. Thank you to the Club for recognising years of service by instructors and workers.”

Other members who weren’t present at the meeting, but whose commitment was also recognised with an award, were: 20 years: Kathleen Van Egeraat and Odette Tyndall

WIRES HELPS BUSHFIRE VICTIMS by Diana Tully It was a black day for the South Coast township of Tathra.

On Sunday 18th March savage bushfires leapt across the Bega River, struck Tathra and cut a swathe of destruction through the tightly-knit community.

We were holidaying at nearby Merimbula –25 years ago we began to stay there for Obedience Trials - so for us the fires were close and personal.

The fires destroyed 69 houses, damaged 39 and 30 cabins and caravans. Fortunately no lives were lost, but the fire was disastrous for the animals and birdlife in the area.

Among the specialist recovery teams was a friend of ours, Janine Green. She is a volunteer worker for WIRES, the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service which has rescued and cared for native animals since 1986. Her area of responsibility is the South East Branch and runs from Wallaga Lake near Bermagui – sometimes further North to Batemans Bay - down to the Victorian border and inland from the coast to Bombala.

Janine with her fellow-helpers, who rely on donations from local businesses, do a wonderful job looking after sick and injured animals until they are well enough to be released into the wild.

On the second day after the fire, WIRES was given permission to enter the devastated area to assist in the search, rescue and recovery process. Janine had to wear fireboots, safety vest and asbestos mask. The smoke had not cleared and embers

were still smouldering. The police met her at the roadblock, escorted her to the animals and back again. She brought home a young female kangaroo with burnt legs whom she treated and called Ashley. She also took out a ring-tailed possum to treat and called him Burney.

From where we were staying we could see the helicopters flying by to re-fuel at the airport. A Canadian pilot said that when he was water-bombing he was fascinated by a school of dolphins swimming close to shore. He also said that he had never seen Australian cockatoos and he was taking several selfies with them to send home.

For him, and us, an unforgettable experience.

Diana Tully is an Instructor for the UD & UDX Rings.
