BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 25 AT 11 A.M.HAMAKOHM: FINDING A SPIRITUAL

PLACE FOR YOURSELF

Rabbi Aaron Bergman will introduce his“HamakOhm” program for the coming year – at

a new time, with a new focus. These Sundaymorning sessions will help you find your “internalspirituality,” says Rabbi Bergman, with the real-ization that “Judaism can make you happier.”

Hamakom is a Hebrew word for God that wasoften used by our sages beginning two thousandyears ago. It literally means the place. The program offers a place – AdatShalom – to re-connect and re-charge your soul. Young parents will find thathour particularly refreshing, and individuals of all ages will welcome a timeand place to “recharge.”

The opening HamakOhm program is on September 25 at 11 a.m. Mostmonths there will be two monthly HamakOhm happenings. Watch for a flyerwith dates for the entire season so that you can plan ahead.

Participants may attend any or all of the programs. Each is an individualexperience.

FROM RABBI BERGMANTHE MEANING OF TISHA B’AV

T isha B'Av, the ninth day of Av, is the saddest dayon the Jewish calendar. It commemorates not

only the destruction of the First and Second HolyTemples of Jerusalem, but the numerous tragedieswe have faced as a people throughout our history. Insome ways, though, it is also an extremely optimisticday.

When we sit on the floor during Tisha B'Av serv-ices and chant mournfully from the Book of Lamentations, it is arecognition that we are still here as a people, and that we have sur-vived all those who wished we would disappear.

This is not just about national history, but our own lives. One ofthe most powerful aspects for me of being Jewish is that I know that Icome from people who face difficulties in life and get through themwith courage, dignity and grace. It makes me feel that I can getthrough my own life’s challenges. It does not mean that life is easy orsimple, but it does mean that we can live meaningfully no matter whatlife brings us.

On Monday night, August 8th, all the Conservative Synagogues inthe area will join together at Adat Shalom to remember the tragediesthat befell us, but also to celebrate the eternal Jewish people. (seepage 1)

RABBIBERGMAN

FROM RABBI SHERETHREE LITTLE WORDS

Apsychiatrist and best-selling author, M. ScottPeck begins The Road Less Traveled with three

words, “Life is difficult.” No matter who you are orwhat the circumstances of your life, no one escapesthis world without challenges. As my papa likes tosay, “everyone’s got something.” It seems to me thatfor many people, the most challenging part of life is

the burden of feeling alone with their struggles. Throughout its longhistory, the synagogue has often served as the place for Jewish peopleto bear their hearts and souls…to open their wounds and allow othersto nurture them. In the last several decades however, it seems thatpeople have moved away from thinking of synagogue in this particularway. We, at Adat Shalom, would like to bring back this way of think-ing. To that end, we are offering several new opportunities this fall.

As I mentioned in a previous Voice article, we will be offering amonthly bereavement group for people who have lost loved ones. Youdo not need to be a member of Adat Shalom to attend this group.

In September, I will also be facilitating a group for women whowould like to work on developing our thinking and behavior aroundfood. Through reflection, discussion of books/articles and candid con-versation, we will work towards achieving greater spirituality and bal-ance with relationship to eating and nourishment.

Also, beginning this fall, Adat Shalom will be offering “open sanc-tuary hours” in which we encourage you to come to shul and utilizeour beautiful sanctuary as a quiet place to sit, pray and meditate. Wewill not be offering a formal service during these times, simply invitingyou to come and take advantage of our quiet, peaceful space.

Though the infamous beginning of Peck’s bestseller may foreverring true, our ancient Jewish Sages knew that a supportive and nur-turing community could make all the difference — and that’s whatyou’ll find today and every day at Adat.

Shanah Tovah.

RABBI SHERE

FROM HAZZAN GROSSBRINGING STRUCTURE TO DESTRUCTION

There are three special observanc-es associated with Tisha B’Av.

Also known as the Fast of the Ninthof Av, this dark and desolate day’smost obvious characteristic is thataside from Yom Kippur, it is the onlyother major fast day on the Jewishcalendar. The second aspect that isunique to Tisha B’Av is the recitationof kinot, or elegies. An individualkinah is a poem expressing mourn-

ing, pain, and sorrow. A kinah was actually the earli-est form of a hesped, or eulogy. Now kinot are associ-ated with larger-scale calamities. The third centralobservance of Tisha B’Av is the chanting of Eichah, theBook of Lamentations.

Also known as “The Scroll of Kinot,” Eichahdepicts the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile ofIsrael. On paper, Eichah is the most poetically struc-tured book in the Tanach. It is the only book in the OldTestament that contains five chapters, and thereforemirrors the five books of Torah. The first two and lasttwo chapters each contain 22 verses – equivalent to thenumber of letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Chapters 1,2 and 4 are, in fact, alphabetical acrostics (first linebegins with alef, second line begins with bet, etc.). OnlyChapter 3 contains 66 verses, in which the alphabeti-cal order is tripled (first three lines begin with alef, sec-ond three lines begin with bet, etc.). Chapter 5 is theonly chapter not demonstrating the acrostic form.

By the time you get this we will have had thedinner, chaired by Ken Podell and Lon Zaback, and asalways, I am sure it went well. We will be having a bar-beque for the Men’s Club executive board membersand Board of Trustees at the end of August and thenin September we begin in earnest.

September will bring Sports Night on September 21stand a golf outing on September 25th. Both of thoseevents are chaired by Men’s Club Past President GaryGraff. In October we will have a “Sunday in theSukkah” program, we will begin Hebrew literacy class-es, we will be “Chillin’ with the Clergy” at Roosevelt’sBilliards Bar & Grill, and we will have a book clubmeeting…I know that sounds like a lot of activities forthe first two months of the year. It is.

The Men’s Club is here to provide activities for men ofall ages at Adat Shalom.

If you have been a member in the past, thank you, andwe hope for your continued support. If you haven’tbeen a member, we would love to have you join us.Membership is only $36, and members receive a dis-count on most activities during the year. If you attenda handful of our activities, which numbered greaterthan 40 last year, you will easily save more on theevent charges than you spend for membership dues. And if you don’t attend a lot of activities you will helpus provide service to the synagogue and provide anoutlet for the men of the shul.

We are very lucky at Adat Shalom to have a fabuousMen’s Club. Give us a try. I am sure you won’t be dis-appointed.

– Bobby Blum, President

UPCOMING FAMILY EVENTS

Family Education programs are endowed in memory

of Oscar Cook and in honor of Jeanette Cook

SUMMER CAMP 2011 has been great fun for the childrenand counselors of Adat Shalom. The weather finallychanged from a gloomy spring to a glorious summer. The hot, sunny days allowed campers to enjoy baseballand basketball, playing in the sandbox and blowingbubbles. Water play was a big hit and included splash-ing in the water, playing with the sprinklers and theslip and slide. The children enjoyed blowing bubblesand, of course, climbing on the outdoor equipment.Campers came together each morning and began theirday with a flag ceremony and songs. At the beginningof each week we celebrated Havdalah and ended eachweek with a special Shabbat chapel time.

–SPECIAL FOR SUMMER–The campers have also enjoyed special programs

- an obstacle course and bouncy the first day of camp,a magician who enlisted the help of the children aspart of his magic show, a Wildlife Safari with exotic ani-mals, and a science program from the Ann ArborHands-On Museum. This program included a blow-upplanetarium in our own social hall where the childrengazed at the stars and planets. The Farmington HillsLibrary provided a story telling session and thecampers enjoyed rides on a choo choo train. Our dayswere filled with endless activities and lots of smiles andlaughter.

Added to this year’s fun was an optional hot doglunch on Fridays with our “master chef” Marvin Brown, who grilled hot dogs for these special outdoor lunches. We are planning our end-of-the summer outdoorShabbat, chapel time and picnic on the last day ofcamp, August 12th.

AS SEPTEMBER APPROACHES, we are sad to think aboutsummer ending, but we’re so excited about our fallschedule and enrollment. Planning is underway, andwe are looking forward to an incredible fun-filledschool year. Please feel free to call our office, 248-851-5105, for additional information or a fall application. Ifyou have already turned in a fall application, pleasewatch the mail for a packet containing information onthe fall semester. They will be sent out in early August.

Minyan Musings

OUR ADAT SHALOM MINYAN BLOG is up and running. A blog (ashortened form of “web log”) is a website maintained by an indi-vidual (in this case, Barry Lippitt) that may contain regularentries of commentary, descriptions of events, or links to othermaterial such as images, video or other websites of interest.

Our Minyan blog’s home page posts weekly information onservice times and other ritual events. Its other pages providegeneral information about ritual practices at Adat Shalom, andin the future will contain information about the prayers them-selves. The blog will also eventually have information relating toBar/Bat Mitzvah schedules, tutoring and events.

If you subscribe to the blog, you will receive these updatedposts as emails. I encourage you to subscribe so that you willautomatically be emailed the updated information as it is post-ed. You will find us online at:

adatshalomminyan.wordpress.com

qqqqq

THE HIGH HOLIDAYS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER. AS IN THE PAST, WEINVITE OUR POST-B’NAI MITZVAH TEENS TO ENHANCE THE HOLIDAY EXPERI-ENCE BY READING TORAH for High Holiday services. Invitations havegone out to many of our teens; if you did not receive one andwould like to chant Torah this year, please send an email to me([email protected]) no later than August 10.

qqqqq

AUGUST IS A PRIME MONTH FOR VACATIONS, AND SEVERAL OF OUR MORN-ING AND EVENING MINYAN REGULARS WILL BE AWAY. PLEASE HELP US OUTIN AUGUST BY PICKING A DAY OF THE WEEK AND A SERVICE, and make ityour own (and, of course, you don’t need to stop at month’s end).In return, we offer you a friendly community for prayer, and, ifyou join us in the morning, a great breakfast. Morning minyanbegins at 7:30 a.m. on weekdays and 8:30 a.m. on Sundays.Evening minyan, Sunday through Friday, begins at 6 p.m.through November 4th.

As a reminder to all who join us in the morning on the days weread Torah (Mondays, Thursdays, Rosh Chodesh, and FastDays), our minyan policy is that men receiving an aliyah mustwear tefillin (we have some extra sets available for your use butcannot guarantee how they will fit). In particular, if you’re com-ing to receive an aliyah when you have yahrzeit, all men shouldremember to bring tefillin or ask to borrow a set.

qqqqq

ON SHABBAT, WE TRY TO ACCOMMODATE EVERYONE WHO, IN ADVANCE,REQUESTS AN ALIYAH for a special occasion. You should make theserequests by calling me at the synagogue (248-851-5100 ext.230), or by sending an email. If we will be offering a congratula-tory prayer for you on a special birthday (multiple of 5, startingat 70) or a special anniversary (multiple of 10, starting at 30),please include Hebrew names (the honoree and his/her fatherand, optionally, mother). Requests to schedule an aliyah for ababy naming or aufruf should continue to go to the Rabbi’soffice.

To Our Adat Shalom Family,We remain overwhelmed by the Jewish TheologicalSeminary event and the response from the community. We are grateful to be this year’s honorees and representJTS and Adat Shalom. Our commitment to AdatShalom and Conservative Judaism over the years hasdeepened our understanding and appreciation for whatJTS does for us worldwide. The evening was perfect. We were happy to be sur-rounded by family and friends who offered well wishesand provided us with support as honorees. RabbiBergman’s kind and heartfelt words as he presented theShin Award to us were the culmination of a memorableand momentous occasion in our lives.Adat Shalom has been our home away from home formany years, and where we have celebrated many sim-chas. Being the Shin Award honorees this year was anunexpected pleasure. Thank you for giving us thisopportunity.

budgets and the overall synagogue budget. This is alwaysa trying time, as we continue to pursue our goal to providesignificant service and value to our members, while keep-ing in mind our financial constraints. Over the past fewmonths, we have participated in an informal survey ofdues among the local Conservative and Reform congrega-tions. We discovered that the family dues at Adat Shalomare the lowest in the community. We will be taking thisfact into account as we move forward in the budgetprocess.

New members have joined the Board of Trustees. I amglad to advise that we have consistently good attendanceat our board meetings, even throughout the summer. (seeour updated board list on page 12)

FINALLY, we’ve experienced extra “entertainment” inthe past few months, provided by the many cell phoneringtones. While they can be spiritually uplifting andcan put pleasant tunes in our heads, I’d like to remindeveryone that our synagogue policy is that cell phonesshould not be used in the building on Shabbat andYom Tov. For those who must have an active phone, such as on-call doctors, please be sure that it is set tovibrate, and please leave the sanctuary and go outsideto answer. When you are inviting guests to the syna-gogue, please share this policy with them.

- MISSING TALLIT -Harry Maisel has asked for your help in finding his tallit, which he wore here on Shabbat morning, July 9. The tal-lit, with traditional black stripes, is especially important toRachel & Harry Maisel because its four corners (with goldembroidery) were re-made from the corners on the tallit oftheir late son, Hillel Isaac Maisel. Should you find Harry’stallit, please call the Maisels, 248-851-5449.

Triumph Over Tragedy:Faces of the Holocaust

On September 10, 2011, the exhibit Triumph Over Tragedy:Faces of the Holocaust will debut at the Janice Charach

Gallery in the JCC, as the first stop of what will become a trav-eling exhibit featuring the portraiture of Monni Must in aneffort to raise money to help people heal after tragedy.

After the devastating and unexpected death of her eldestdaughter, Miya, celebrated portrait photographer Monni Mustembarked on a quest to find a reason to go on in the face ofunspeakable tragedy. She photographed and interviewedHolocaust survivors, learning from them how to build lives ofbeauty and meaning despite the devastations they experienced.

This project – from which she created her first book, LivingWitnesses – has expanded to become a global effort to recordthe stories and triumphs of survivors. This year, Must createdthe non-profit A Dime & A Penny Foundation to raise moneyand create books and exhibits to provide others with inspira-tion and support in the wake of tragedy.

The exhibit debuts in an open-to-the-public gala event onSaturday, September 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the CharachGallery, which is located inside the West Bloomfield JCC.

If you think of Chapter 3 as a con-glomerate of three separate acrostics, each of 22 verses, Eichah therefore con-tains six laboriously constructed acros-tics of equal duration, followed by onechapter of the same length of free verse– six parts labor, one part free. Inessence, the five chapters of Eichah par-allel the six days of Creation and one dayof Rest.

The Jewish people throughout his-tory have persevered against all odds.Tisha B’Av, a day commemoratingdestruction and tragedy, is connected toa story that when read superficially ismerely a book about desolation. On adeeper, more human level, however,Eichah is constructed to provide hope.Eichah assures a widowed Jerusalemand a bereaved nation that they can re-create themselves, that life will prevail inabundance. Eichah assures a devastat-ed Israel that tomorrow is a new day,and a new day always follows a darknight. For it is Chapter 3, verses 22 and23 that state: “Surely Adonai’s merciesare not consumed, surely His compas-sions fail not. They are new every morn-ing; great is Your faithfulness.”
