Introduction to YEFI and ABCD Identifying and Mobilizing Assets and Resources to Strengthen the Yonkers Community

The Yonkers Elder Friendly Initiative (YEFI), funded since 2001 by the Helen Andrus Benedict Foundation, has used the asset based community development model of John Kretzmann and John McKnight from Northwestern Universitys Asset Based Community Development Institute to identify and mobilize community resources to plan and provide opportunities for Yonkers residents 55 and over to remain involved, active and independent.

The first Yonkers Asset Map: A Tool for Community Building was presented at the conference Asset Based Thinking: Mining Community Resources held on November 29, 2001. The conference, attended by over 150 representatives from Yonkers organizations, programs and associations, featured how to use an asset based framework to identify community resources; demonstrated how to build on community strengths; and presented success stories of communities and programs that use asset based thinking.

Kretzmann and Mcknight the authors of the text, Building Communities from the Inside Out-A Path toward Finding and Mobilizing Community Assets define assets as skills, talents and capacities of institutions, associations, organizations and individuals that are shared with the community for mutually beneficial support, problem solving and community building.

Yonkers is a city which contains many assets and resources for residents regardless of age. Asset mapping does not look what is missing, or what is wrong or what needs to be fixed in a community. It is a way to identify, connect and mobilize community capabilities to build capacity and therefore create a stronger, more self reliant City. YEFI has joined the list of success stories in using an asset based framework since 2001 to develop opportunities for residents 55 to remain active, engaged and independent. YEFI has collaborated and partnered with existing resources to encourage residents 55 to use and be recognized for their talents and skills in a variety of ways:

as participants in the Yonkers Leadership Program, designed to assist residents to engage in community life through volunteering for a project of their choice and/or for an existing program

as the planners of the annual citywide Senior Health and Fitness Day, a day of exercise, wellness promotion activities and information sessions run by adults 55 and over as recipients of the annual Blue Ribbon Award, developed by YEFI to bestow honors on residents, not previously recognized, for their community involvement as members of the YEFI Advisory Committee and its sub-committees as planners and developers of and participants in the new YEFI program 55 Plus Yonkers Connections: Promoting opportunities for adults in life long learning, volunteering, work,

staying connected, creativity and life planning. as participants at the YEFI annual Forum, an opportunity to become more aware of community asets as well as to provide the impetus for making Yonkers even more friendly

for its residents 55 plus.

How to Use the Asset Map

The Map of Yonkers located in Section 2 shows the City of Yonkers divided into thirty-four grids. Each of the 34 grids is individually mapped on the pages following the index. Each grid area may include more than one neighborhood. A map of Yonkers 38 neighborhoods is located at the beginning of Section 2. Assets and resources shown on each map are given site numbers. On the page opposite each map, information about a site number is listed (site number, name of organization/program /association address, and telephone number). Locating and identifying assets can be done by category or alphabetically by name of organization If you are interested in finding all the resources of a specific category, use the Categories Index beginning in Section 1 EXAMPLE
