Smart English Through Technology & ScienceWorld’s First and Only Complete English Enhancement Program based on Content-based Instruction (CBI)

What is Content-Based Instruction orTheme-based Learning?

Content-based Instruction is a powerful innovation in languageteaching across a wide range of instructional contexts. (Brinton,Snow, and Wesche .1989). In its best form, the languagelessons are blended with stimulating content.

The integration of language and content teaching is perceivedby the European Commission as “an excellent way of makingprogress in a It first appeared on the foreign language”, thisinstitution having contributed to developing the networkEuroclic, a forum for projects and proposals in the area oflanguage and content integrated learning.

Keeping students motivated and interested are two importantfactors underlying content-based instruction. Motivation andinterest are crucial in supporting student success withchallenging, informative activities that support success andwhich help the student learn complex skills (Grabe & Stoller,1997).

When students are motivated and interested in the material theyare learning, they make greater connections between topics, elaborations with learning material and can recall informationbetter (Alexander, Kulikowich, & Jetton, 1994: Krapp, Hidi, &Renninger, 1992).

The Evolution and Scope

It first appeared on the general language teaching scene in themid- to late 1980s, and has gained increasing popularity andwider applicability in the last ten years. This prominence can beeasily perceived in the wide range of contexts, educationalstages and content areas involved.

With CBI, student achieves more. This in turn leads to aperception of success, of gaining positive attributes which willcontinue a circular learning pattern of success and interest.

“When learners are motivated and interested inthe material they are learning, they make greater

connections between topics, elaborations withlearning material and can recall informationbetter. That is the best way to learn a second

language.”

Smart English Through Technology & ScienceWorld’s First and Only Complete English Enhancement Program based on Content-based Instruction (CBI)

Major Benefits of Content-basedInstruction

Strong empirical support for CBI can be found in secondlanguage acquisition (SLA) research, in training studies and incognitive psychology, as well as in the outcomes documentedby successful programs in a variety of contexts and levels ofinstruction (Adamson 1993; Dupuy 2000).

Grabe and Stoller (1997) perceive seven benefits of CBI ascited below:1. Learners are exposed to a considerable amount of languagewhile learning content. (. . .) In content-based programs, learners explore interesting content and are engaged inappropriate language-dependent activities (. . .). The resultantlanguage learning activities, therefore, are not artificial ormeaningless exercises.

2. CBI supports contextualized learning; learners are taughtuseful language that is embedded within relevant discoursecontexts rather than as isolated language fragments. (. . .).Thus, CBI allows for explicit language instruction, integratedwith content instruction, in a relevant and purposeful context.

3. (. . .) The use of coherently developed content sources allowslearners to call on their own prior knowledge to learn additionallanguage and content material.

4. (. . .) In content-based classroom, learners are exposed tocomplex information and are involved in demanding activitieswhich can lead to intrinsic motivation.

5. CBI (. . .) lends itself well to strategy instruction andpractice, as theme units naturally require and recycle importantstrategies across varying content and learning tasks.

6. CBI allows greater flexibility and adaptability to be built intothe curriculum and activity Sequences. (Grabe and Stoller1997, 19-20)

“Content-based Instruction effectively increaseslearners' English language proficiency and teaches

them the skills necessary for success in variousprofessions.

With CBI, learners gradually acquire greatercontrol of the English language, enabling them toparticipate more fully in an increasingly complex

academic and social environment.”

“Because CBI focuses on the use oflanguage to convey thoughts and ideas,it offers many meaningful contextswithin which learners can developgrammatical competence.”

- Dr. Peter Master, Professor Emeritus,Department of Linguistics, San JoseState University

“Out of the four language skills,‘Speaking’ is considered as the mostessential skill to be mastered.

Oral language is a powerful learningtool, which Shapes, Modifies,Extends and Organizes thought.

Oral language is the foundation of alllanguage development and thereforethe foundation of all learning. It isthe basis for the other languagestrands like Listening, Reading &Writing.”

“People do not learn the pieces ofthe language and then put themtogether to make conversations.

Instead, infants acquiring their firstlanguage, and people acquiringsecond language learn thecomponents of the languagethrough meaningful interactionwith other people”.

“Students are fed up withmeaningless communicationlessons in classrooms.

For instance, "A traditionalclassroom exchange in which onestudent asks “Where's thelibrary”? and another studentanswers “It's on Green Street, opposite the bank”, when theycan both see the answer, is notmuch like real communication".

- (Harmer, 2001, p. 85)
