GWSC NEWS 2019
I would like to send a very warm thank you to all involved in the wonderful production of Curtains.
Special thanks to our Producer Peter Lego and the supervising staff for their time and dedication
to this event. The College Production is such an important part of the GWSC culture and our
students love to be involved in this event. By all accounts, Curtains was a fabulous production
showcasing the incredible talent of our students and giving many of them a chance to perform
for the first time. Special thanks to our amazing Tech Crew who supported this event.
Kind regards

MIDDLE SCHOOL There are many extracurricular activities taking place this term, but one of the most exciting
would have to be the School Production ‘Curtains’. Our Middle School students were simply
brilliant and the show was so entertaining. The amount of rehearsal, time and energy that went
into preparing this show is a testament to the dedication of our staff and students in the Arts,
Music and also our Tech Crew. Congratulations to all involved.
We are all looking forward to our Middle School Social which will be held on Thursday the 5th
of September. This year the theme is ‘Black & White’. Families are reminded that this is a
‘dress up’ event and we really hope students will be creative in their costume choices. This is a
student led event and our Middle School Executive is working hard to get ready for the biggest
celebration of the year. We encourage all Middle School students to attend this terrific event.
Our Middle School captains are also showing wonderful leadership around the college. Not
only are they pivotal in leading the Middle School Executive, they are also working closely with
our Middle School team. The captains all collaborate with House Leaders to run restorative
conferences. This involvement means that students who are experiencing a hard time have an
older peer/ leader to turn to. In addition they worked with Middle School to identify issues faced
by Middle School kids to inform our strategic planning. It is wonderful to work with these very
talented and dedicated Middle School Leaders.
I would also like to congratulate Lashuana Lawrence who has been awarded the ‘Jan
Bristowe’ award through Waverley City Representative Netball. Middle School team loves
finding out about Student Achievements outside of the college so we encourage our students
and families to keep us informed about fabulous achievements such as this.
Often our parents will discuss the challenges of managing their child’s use of technology. We
understand this is a particularly challenging issue for parents to manage at home. We would
like to suggest some important ways you can support your child’s learning and use of
technology. Firstly, we would strongly recommend that students do not have tech in their room;
this includes phones, iPads and desktop computers. Access to this sort of technology at night
can greatly affect your child’s ability to sleep and relax in the evening. Study should occur out
in an open space so that you can monitor your child’s work and they can access technology
outside their bedroom.
We would also encourage parents not to provide their child with access to lots of data or
unlimited data through their phone plans. This can increase the distraction of their phone and
can also mean they use hot spotting while at school to bypass our internet restrictions on
social media etc.
We look forward to a productive and rewarding semester as students take advantage of the
wide range of opportunities offered to them.
Kind regards,
Melissa Perera

SPORT AT GWSC Year 7 Regional Badminton Finals The Year 7 Boys and Girls Regional Badminton Finals were held at the Kilsyth Sports Centre
on Friday the 9th of August. Our GWSC students showcased their tremendous ability and
support for each other throughout the tightly contested competition.
Congratulations to the Year 7 Boys badminton team who have progressed through to the State Finals. We look forward to following your achievements in the next round. We would also like to acknowledge the achievements of the Year 7 Girls, who made it to the semi-finals of the tournament, before being narrowly eliminated. Well done to the team for making it so far. Many thanks to Scotty and Ellyce for coaching you so well on the day and to Joy and Adelle for all of their assistance in training the teams with Mr. Liacos.
