Day 4 / 2nd August 2017 (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
Spend today exploring the mighty West MacDonnell Ranges. First stop Ormiston Gorge, keep
your eyes peeled for Perentie Lizards lazing along the banks and take a swim in the rock holes.
Hike the “Ghost Gum Walk” before four-wheel driving through the Owen Springs Reserve
following the footsteps of the first European explorers. Tonight we rest at Owen Springs,
spending a night 'Wayoutback' under the southern stars, bush camping in swags complete with
campfire, a hearty meal and imagining what it was like for our first explorers discovering this raw
and remote part of the Outback. (Pop up tents available upon request.)
• Ormiston Gorge • Owen Springs Reserve • Ghost Gum Walk • Bush camp
Day 5 / 3rd August 2017 (Breakfast / Lunch)
After a hearty breakfast we take a detour to visit the Henbury Meteorite craters off the Giles
Track.
Henbury Meteorites Conservation Reserve contains 12 craters which were formed when a meteor
hit the Earth's surface 4,700 years ago. The Henbury Meteor, weighing several tonnes and
accelerating to over 40,000 km per hour, disintegrated before impact and the fragments formed
the craters.
The scattered fragments of the Henbury Meteorite are extremely heavy since they consist mainly
of the metals iron (90%) and nickel (8%). Over 500 kilograms of metal have been found on the
site, the largest over 10 kilograms. Few specimens now exist in the area.
We then retrace our mornings drive to cross the famous Hugh River Stock with our destination
the inspirational *Oak Valley Aboriginal Community. Spend time with the Traditional owners
exploring the land, try your hand at Boomerang throwing, see ancient rock art paintings and
carvings and gain a personal experience of the profound understanding the owners have of this
pristine remote environment.
Travelling back to Alice Springs via the Old South Road, stop in at the Ewaninga Art site before
returning to your accommodation approximately 5.30pm. After returning to civilisation, a hot
shower awaits before joining your fellow travellers for a farewell meal, laugh and few cold ales.
(This evening’s meal at own expense.)
