Starter Jose Lugo yielded four runs in the first inning including a leadoff solo homer to Rich Thompson. Buddy Carlyle surrendered three more over the next 4.1 innings, including two runs on a homer by Leslie Anderson. The G- Braves scored five times against Durham starter Lance Pendleton (W, 6-4) in the fourth as Ruben Gotay singled in Terry Tiffee, Luis Durango plated Jose Yepez and Gotay with a two- run triple, Josh Wilson added a sac fly and Ernesto Mejia lined a game-tying double scoring Felix Pie. The tie was short lived as Jaye Chapman (L, 3-6) served up eight runs, three earned over 2.0 innings. A bases-loaded walk to Chris Gimenez pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth, and a grand slam by Reid Brignac opened up a 12-7 advantage. Bulls’ relievers Adam Liberatore, Josh Lueke and Dane De La Rosa combined for 3.1 scoreless IP to close the game. Standings Watch: With last night’s loss, Gwinnett falls to 10-12 in July and 4-10 since the All-Star Break…the G-Braves also drop to 3.0 games behind Durham (50-56) for third place in the International League South Division. Gwinnett trails first place Charlotte (61-45) by a season-high 14.0 games and second place Norfolk (53-52) by 7.0 games with 38 games remaining in the season. Gartrell Getting Hot: Stefan Gartrell notched his second-straight three-hit game last night, going 3-for-5 with his 15 th home run, two runs scored and 41 st RBI. Gartrell is hitting .500 (10- for-20) with two doubles, two HR, five runs and eight RBI on a five-game hitting streak. Named the Topps IL Player of the Month for May (.333, 10 HR, 32 RBI), Gartrell hit just .167 (13-for-78) with no HR or RBI in 22 games in June. In July, he’s finding his stroke again…he’s hitting a team-best .404 (21-for-52) with four HR, 10 RBI and a 1.148 OPS in 18 games this month. Tonight’s Start: 22-year-old right-hander Randall Delgado makes his

second appearance and start for Gwinnett in game three of this four-game series against Durham tonight. It is the 19

th start and appearance for the

Las Tablas, Panama native overall this year (17 starts with Atlanta).

Last Outing: Delgado was recalled by Atlanta to make a spot start in

game two of a doubleheader at Washington on 7/21. He turned in his sixth MLB quality start in a no-decision for the Braves as he limited the Nationals to two runs on six hits over 6.0 innings…he walked one and struck out four, throwing 99 pitches, 62 for strikes. Atlanta went on to lose, 5-2.

Last Outing with Gwinnett: Delgado last started for the G-Braves on

7/16 at Indianapolis, taking the loss. He was touched up for six runs on six hits including home runs by Tony Sanchez and Starling Marte as he worked 5.0 innings in Gwinnett’s 7-5 loss to the Indians. Delgado walked one and struck out five in the contest, throwing 94 pitches, 56 for strikes.

Vs. Durham: Delgado will face Durham for the first time in his career

tonight. He’s faced the Bulls’ MLB affiliate, the Tampa Bay Rays once, taking the loss with Atlanta on 5/19/12 (4.0 IP, 4 ER).

Prospecting: Delgado entered the 2012 season rated the No.3 prospect

in the Atlanta Braves system according to Baseball America. In 2011, he was also ranked third in the system as well as 30

th in all of baseball.

Like a G-Brave: Tonight will be Delgado’s sixth career appearance and

start for the Gwinnett Braves. He’s 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA (16 ER in 26.2 IP) across five starts, four coming during the 2011 season. He won each of his first two Triple-A starts in scoreless fashion, blanking Charlotte over 6.0 three-hit innings while striking out nine in his debut on 8/6/11 and following up with 7.0 scoreless, three-hit innings and six strikeouts at Scranton/WB on 8/11/11. Delgado is 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA (16 ER in 13.2 IP) in three starts since, losses to Charlotte, Norfolk and Indianapolis.

In Atlanta: Delgado is 4-9 with a 4.42 ERA (45 ER in 91.2 IP) in 17 starts

with the Atlanta Braves this season. The right-hander won each of his first two starts on 4/11 at Houston and 4/17 vs. the New York Mets, but lost five times in seven starts from 4/22 to 5/24. He logged back-to-back wins on 5/29 vs. St. Louis and 6/6 at Miami before dropping four decisions in his last six Major League starts. Delgado was optioned to Gwinnett on 7/15.

Eight Isn’t Enough: Twice this season, Delgado has pitched a career-

high 8.0 innings…he’s lost both times. On 5/3 vs. Philadelphia, he allowed two runs on six hits over 8.0 IP, but was outshined by Joe Blanton’s three-hit shutout in a 4-0 loss. He worked 8.0 IP with two runs on three hits on 6/17 vs. Baltimore, but again lost as five Orioles pitchers including left-hander Wei-Yin Chen combined on a seven-hit shutout in a 2-0 win.

Getting Ahead: When ahead in the count with Atlanta this season,

Delgado has limited opponents to a .162 average (17-for-105) with just one HR and four RBI. When behind in the count, however, he’s been hit to the tune of a .339 average (41-for-121) including five HR and 31 RBI.

About 2011: Delgado spent 2011 between Double-A Mississippi,

Gwinnett and Atlanta, going 8-8 with a 3.67 ERA in a career-high 32 starts. He appeared on the Major League roster on three separate occasions, going 1-1 with a 2.83 ERA in seven starts with Atlanta.
