Radon and asbestos cause long-term diseases which occur years after exposure, both should be included in any comprehensive evaluation of a building’s IAQ ( Indoor Air Quality).

Radon gas:Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. Scientists has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Some scientific studies of radon exposure indicate that children may be more sensitive to radon. This may be due to their higher respiration rate and their rapidly dividing cells, which may be more vulnerable to radiation damageThe project has been done in two different building, one is a new which Gulf University for Science and Technology and the other is an old building that is Kuwait Airways Building.A/ Kuwaiti Airways building It is an old building located in Kuwait City near the sea established in 1974 Tawasul Services Company is located in the ninth floor of area 400 m2 with total employee of 35.

Figure 1 : Tawasul Services Company , floor 9 - Kuwait Airways Building

The company established in 2006, they change most of the constructed materials , wall are repainted, floors are made of industrial

marble and most of the wall are constructed of Gibson board , as it is a communication company there are lot of electronic equipments and computer screens .B / Gulf University for Science and Technology

Figure 2 : Library of Gulf University for Science and Technology

In west Mishref new area , established 2008, with a special design can be described as friendly environmental building. It is designed to conserve both electricity and water. Total area is 135000 m2, consisting of basement and 3 floors.Total number of students is 3000 and total number of staff and faculty is 230 To have some insight about how people are affected by the work environment , I had distributed an questionnaire that consists of questions related to work environment and the main symptoms of sick building syndrome. In Tawasul Services Company , questionnaire has been distributed to a total of 13 employee available at that day, 4 of them are female , and 5 of them are smokers.Radon has been measured in two separated office , it has been set for one hour, temperature, relative humidity and pressure has been measured also the offices volume has been taken . In Gulf University for Science and Technology, total of 38 questionnaire has been distributed in different located offices.Radon gas concentration has been measured in the 3 floors also in

the storage room in the basement beside measurements of temperature, relative humidity and pressure also offices volume. Results and Conclusion A/ In Tawasul Services Company 13 questionnaire has been distributed after making the statistics in excel sheet it shows that the most common work environmental complains are:Too high room temperature Varying room temperatureUnpleasant smellNoise Light that is dim or causes glare or reflections While the most common symptoms were:Heavy headedness HeadacheDifficulties in concentrationItching , burning , irritation of the eyeThere was no effect of gender type or being a smoking person on the result. The radon concentration in the company was measured in two separate office each for 1 hour, the readings was below average:First office = 18 Bq/m3, temp= 23ºC, humidity = 45 % and atmospheric pressure = 1081 mBar with volume of 19.9 m3.Second office = 19 Bq/m2 , temp= 24ºC, humidity 42 % , and atmospheric pressure = 1017 m Bar with volume of 62.5m3

Figure 3 :NOC Office (Network Operation Center) in Tawasul Services Co.

As the building is an old one but the company has been renovated in 2006 , most of original building materials has been changed , ventilation is good and most of the offices have windows , the floor is covered with marbles , and the building is located in the ninth floor where concentration of radon decreases with increasing the height .so the radon gas measurement was below average .Most of employee complains comes from work stress and load , so it is mostly psychological symptoms . B/ In Gulf University for Science and Technology, 38 questionnaire has been distributed after making the statistics in excel sheet it shows that the most common work environmental complains were:DraughtVarying room temperatureToo low temperatureDust and dirt While the most common symptoms were:Heavy headedness HeadacheCough There was no effect of gender type or being a smoking person on the results. As it is an educational institution , it considered as a crowded place with 3000 students and approximately 230 staff and faculty members The radon concentration in the University was measured in four separate office each for 1 hour, the readings was below average :

Figure 4 : Radon Gas Measurement Instrument

Basement = 21bq/m2, temp= 21ºC , humidity = 46 %, atmospheric pressure = 1016 mBar, with room volume of 31.3 m3.Library( ground floor) = 23 Bq/m2 , tem= 21ºC , humidity =47 % , atmospheric pressure = 1019 mBar and office volume of 27.3 m3.College of Arts and Sciences (first floor) = 16 Bq/m2, temp =20ºC, humidity = 42%, atmospheric pressure = 1017 mBar , with volume of 61.7 m3Upper Management ( second floor ) = 9 Bq/m2, temp= 22ºC, humidity = 42%, atmospheric pressure = 1015 mBar, with a volume of 29.9m3As the building is a new building designed as a friendly environment building with high technology and most modern and new equipments ,The ventilation in GUST is through AC, no windows available in the offices this cause mostly the feeling of varying room temperature.Relationship between sick building syndrome in two buildings one old and another new has been investigated. Measurement of Radon gas concentration at each location, has shown that there is no effect of radon gas concentration on people’s responses. This is because radon gas concentration was below average in both buildings. Also the study suggests that the gender has no effect and it does not show any differences between females and males. It was striking to note that smoking behavior did not have significant effects. This is in agreement with the most.Studies showing that psychological symptoms, rather than building conditions, have profoundly significant effect on the buildings related illnesses. More field research is needed to ascertain this issue.

Sick Building Syndromes and Environmental Complains.Badria Al-Kandari office manager of BOT Chairman and President Office and a Master Degree Student in Environmental Sciences at Kuwait University whom has done her final and Graduated Project about Sick Building Syndrome ( as influenced by age and use ) . Sick building syndrome is a term used to describe situation in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to the time spent in the building The complaints may be localized in a particular office or area or may be widespread throughout the building.According to US EPA the four most dangerous IAP (Indoor Air Pollution) substances: - Radon gas - Cigarette smoke - Formaldehyde - Asbestos

Naif Al Khatrash`s remedy was to swim.

He started swimming at the age of 13, after the harm that happened to his leg and arm due to soccer. He joined different pools and is now a member of Kuwait Sporting Club (KSC). He participated in local and national championships

where he won the third place in breast stroke, 50 meters. He participated in GUST`s eight races, where he won the first place in the first five ones and the second place in the last three. Moreover, he was a member of the handicapped charity swim event in Kuwait Club Pool. He races 50, 100 and 200

meters breast stroke and also 200 meters individual medley. Swimming is something he got used to it, a way of life and a treasure. He is willing to continue and be faster than the day before. His ideal in life is Dara Taurus, a 40-year-old woman who won a gold medal in swimming against an 18-year-old girl. She broke the barriers because she had the will power and did not retire at the age of 21, but pursued her dream and achieved her goal. What pushed

him to be a good swimmer are his stubbornness and his hard practices. He is very positive and is not affected nor by the spirit of challenge nor by mind games. In his point of view, nothing is impossible and his journey is not yet done.Abdul Rahman Al Bader started swimming at the age of six and through his 15 years of racing, he won locally, 150 gold medals, the National and the Gulf record in breast stroke. In 2008, he got three gold medals in all races and

won gold, silver and a bronze medal in the Asian Championship. Abdul Rahman reached one of his goals which is, in 2006, he was ranged number six in the Top eight swimmers in Brazil›s championship and his second and major goal is to compete with everyone and have his name in swimming. He would like also to reach the Olympics. Abdul Rahman has his own techniques where the most important one is him feeling the water and having the passion for swimming.

His father is his ideal in life because he sees him as perfect, humble, loved by everyone and down-to-earth. What pushed him to succeed in his career is his love for competence and his will power. Both swimmers, Naif and Abdul Rahman had to pick one thing they would like to change. They answered «The Management». The swimmers do not see clubs› interests in individual games but all their attention is on collective games, precisely soccer.

10 good reasons why you should be learning a foreign language“I speak English, so I don’t have to learn a foreign language....” Everyone speaks English, right? Well, certainly not everyone speaks English. According to the CIA World Fact Book, only 5.6 % of the world’s total population speaks English as a primary language. That number doubles when people who speak English as a second or third language are counted. By conservative estimates, that means that well over four-fifths of the world’s population does not speak English. Still not convinced? Then here are 10 very good reasons why you should be learning a foreign language anyway to:

increase global understanding improve employment potential increase native language ability sharpen cognitive and life skills

improve chances of entry into college or graduate school appreciate international literature, music, and film make travel more feasible and enjoyable expand study abroad options increase understanding of oneself and one’s own culture make lifelong friends

For the first time in Kuwait and in the

Middle East, GUST presented exclusively on its stage Muslim American comedians running the show” Allah Made Me Funny”. The group presents Muslims’ experiences in the West in a very funny and non-traditional way, aiming to improve Muslims’ image among non-Muslims.GUST made many efforts to be the first one to bring them to Kuwait in agreement with the Kuwaiti Company of Global Leadership with Ahmad Al Mutawaa and in cooperation with GUST talent club. The show started by the “Free Runners” performance then by the comedians’ jokes: Mohamad Amer, originally from Palestine, the American preacher Moss and finally Azhar Ussman, originally from India.Dr. Robert Cook, students, the press, staff, faculty members and their families attended happily the show with out loud laughs and interaction.Dr. Fahad Al Zumai, Vice-President of Administration and Financial Affairs noted that this show explains the importance of presenting everything that helps the Islamic society. It shows the good, right and positive image of Muslims after the event of the 11th of September, where Muslims were depicted and seen as terrorists. In conclusion, Islam is the religion of peace and forgiveness. At the end of the show, Al Mutawaa thanked the faculty and its members for their cooperation and efforts to illuminate Islam and its brightness.

Good Mornin’ GUST

Ethics in GUST It is not difficult to have a green environment and behave in an ethical way in your university especially that most of you spend a lot of time in it. Therefore, in my point of view some small tips we can follow will help us be ethical people and have meaningful effect on GUST environment. GUST is a residence for us as students. Our residence reflects our personality; therefore, we should improve our choices and behavior so we can maintain a well-established culture that reflects a better image to everyone surrounding us. Ignorance is envy and imitation is suicide. You can make the difference. Create a positive peer pressure that will encourage you and everyone around you to make the difference. Never say I cannot do it alone, your step will encourage someone around you. Some of the tips I advise everyone, including me to follow:

1- Save power by using stares instead of elevator or escalator. Remember the positive sides: it improves your health and helps in the transition of handicapped people.

2- Print papers only when necessary.

3- Recycle papers, cans or any items. They can be reproduced to other items that will eventually be used by other people, and it will lower competition, all items will be sufficient for everyone.

4- Smoke in the permitted areas; remember that many people suffer from some type of sickness that smoking effect. Help those people, do not be a cause of their termination.

5- Park your car properly, even if your late, that’s not considered an excuse, put your self and the safety of others as your first priority.

6- Follow the University rules, consider the positive sides, and remember they were established for your benefits.

Being a student in GUST is a great experience, which affect my whole life and show me how to be a successful and effective person in my society. First of all, I want to thank my God first, my parent’s, GUST administrators for their better understanding and co-operation with students, and my professional professors for creating such supporting environment that helped me to become what I am today. To be a successful person and achieve your goals use your time efficiently, having faith in Gods well, and love what you do. Your succession makes your parent’s, your university, and makes you have Self-pride. I assure you that “succession comes with determination” & succession is a resolution in your life.

Life Succession

The desire of the person to be in continuing progress has no limits. This progress should be in sequence way to get the high level of ambition. The person is searching to gain the luxury life and gain the new facilities may produced by this progress. One of this positiveness is special benefits. It is possible to be better for us in the ordinary life and other issues will be good for us in the judgment day. From this point, we are looking forward the desire of the students during their study in the secondary school to put some of points to be

followed in the faculty and what is next, we should realize that is the only way to give them the chance to achieve their goals and satisfy their ambitions. Every person had special way to get his target, meanwhile there are another ways it is aimless way. After using the latest methods, we discovered that there are in apple pie order method, it is very important and useful to be used it in the pioneer local or international education institutions. And we are joining Gulf University for Science & Technology which managed to provide the pure and ideal atmosphere for students to continue his education efficiently and professionallyThe university contain educational and technological infrastructure to be deeply rooted in the education field of Kuwait. The university gives the student the feeling of gaining the knowledge and put the love of education in the students.
