Year 8 Native Garden Design Continues

The 2013 Year 8 Technology students have continued the work done by previous Year 8 students with the

establishment of another native garden bed at Gundagai High School. The students have been studying plant

propagation as well as native plants and their use in garden design in a lead up to assist them to establish a

small native garden within the school. This is the third such project to be completed by a Year 8 Technology

class.

The class was required to draw a scale map, research plant growth habits, soil requirements and develop a

basic financial budget for establishment. Students then prepared the site and constructed a retaining wall.

They were given a budget and had to produce a design plan on their scale map of the area along with a

costing for plants required. Work, Health and Safety considerations were also addressed as students

progressed through the exercise.

The whole of Year 8 were involved in this exercise with the project completed mid-October with mulch laid

down to conserve moisture and keep soil temperature as constant as possible.

I would like to thank Rob Ward from Tegra who donated sand and mulch to assist the students with this

project his generosity is very much appreciated.

Careers Workshop

On Thursday 14th November, 40 students in Years 9 &10 participated in a Careers Workshop conducted by

Trish Cartwright from Winnow Down Consultancy, Sydney. The workshop focussed on several career aspects

including: first impressions, dress for success, resume preparation, customer service essentials, top 10

interview mistakes, speech presentation, interview questions and preparation and interview application

letter.

The students were highly engaged during the workshop and provided very positive feedback about the value

of the content covered. All students were excellent representatives of Gundagai High School and are to be

congratulated on their participation.
