GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL CONGRATULATES NEW NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS

GHS’s new National Board Certified Teachers are Mr. Robert Caylor, Mrs. Crystal Clark, Mrs.

Angelitta Darden, Mrs. Jessica Lopez, Mrs. Beth Rogers, and Mrs. Christine Salminen. Mrs. Kay

Whitworth achieved renewal of her National Board Certification as well this year. These teachers

achieved National Board Certification through a performance-based, peer-review process similar to

Board certification in medicine. They achieved the profession’s gold standard for accomplished teaching,

based on standards-created by teachers, for teachers-that define what teachers should know and be able

to do to advance student learning.

Board-certified teachers, known as NBCTs, are leading both in and outside the classroom across the

nation. We salute our excellent teachers who have invested themselves in this rewarding, rigorous process

and are excited about what it means for the students they serve in the Gulfport School District.

Turkey Creek article is being included in a book, A People's Curriculum For the Earth.

Mr. Thomas Watson was named one of our faculty’s most spirited members and has shown his Admiral spirit by donning a white tuxedo and proudly wearing our school’s colors of blue and orange.

Ms. Lauren Lassabe was the guest speaker for The University of Southern Mississippi’s HIS 488 course, which is a course designed to assist pre-service teachers who will be engaging in their student teaching experiences next semester. Ms. Lassabe shared classroom management strategies, classroom organization tips, and realistic expectations for first-year teachers. This past semester she opened her classroom to student teacher Mr. Marty Jeansonne, who learned a great deal from his student teaching experience at GHS.

GHS HISTORY TEACHER SPEAKS TO PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS AT USM

    MR. THAMES’ CASE STUDY PUBLISHED

Mr. Hardy Thames, history teacher and Shoreline sponsor at Gulfport High School, conducted research on Turkey Creek along with his students, and his case study has been published in A People’s Curriculum for the Earth. Five years in the making, A People’s Curriculum for the Earth is a collection of articles, role plays, simulations, stories, poems, and graphics to help breathe life into teaching about the environmental crisis. The book features some of the best articles from the Rethinking Schools magazine, along with readings on climate change, energy, water, food, and pollution. We are proud that Mr. Thames has contributed to this resource that helps students see what issues Earth faces and how to imagine solutions.

Mr. Thames’ classroom case study entitled Looking for Justice at Turkey Creek can also be found in pdf format online. It was published in the Rethinking Schools winter edition. Check it out! http://www.leahmahan.com/comehellorhighwater/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Thames_Rethinking-Schools.pdf

Mrs. Edith Flores, Integrated Science 9 teacher at GHS, has established a very successful program to help students make up missed assessments and assignments after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. She has served almost 300 students in her endeavor. We appreciate her initiative to implement the Academic Recovery program, as well as the many hours she has devoted after school. This program has not only afforded students the opportunity to better their grades, but it also has protected the instructional time of teachers and has allowed teachers to better target their instruction during after-school tutorials in their own classrooms.

QUILTS OF VALOR AWARDED ON MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY

To recognize the service and accomplishments of our dedicated Marine Corps JROTC instructors, two beautiful, hand-made quilts were presented to Lieutenant Colonel John Owens and Master Sergeant Alan Neumann by the Quilts of Valor Foundation (www.QOVF.org) during the Marine Corps Birthday Ceremony at GHS.

Mr. Patrick Wadsworth recently presented at the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
