The MOUwith universities of European Commission under ErasmusMundus- Svagata and FUSION Project, IMOU at WorldBiodiversity Congress, Thailand, are some of the landmarks thatthe University has achieved in the last few years. In terms ofinfrastructure and facilities, the University is one of the topranked Universities in the state, it has invested huge fundallocated by UGC, state Government and the HyderabadKarnataka regional development board. HISTORY OF THE REGION

This region has rich historical heritage. Buddhist settlementsites, Edicts of Ashoka in the form of slab inscription at Sannatiin Kalaburagi District are some of the heritage sites. Famouskingdoms like the Rashtrakutas of Malkhed, Chalukyas ofBasavakalyana, Bahamani Emperors of Kalaburagi and Sultanateof Bidar have ruled this region.

This region has a very rich cultural and literary heritage. The very first known work in Kannada Literature, ‘Kaviraja Marga’was written by Srivijay during the regime of the famousRasthrakuta emperor Nrupatunga during 850 AD. It was againaround this period, Mahaveeracharya wrote his Mathematicalworks and Vijnaneshwara wrote his Mitakshara commentaryand an epigraph about him is preserved in Martur village, 22km from Kalaburagi.

The region has witnessed a profound revolutionarymovement during the 12th Century AD led by Basaveshwara. Itwas a movement of spiritual enlightenment, social equality, dignity of labour and respect for women. Purandara Dasa, arenowned poet, philosopher and founder of the Carnatik musicwho lived during the Vijayanagara Empire, belongs to this region.Subsequently, Raichur District became the cradle of severalpoets and philosophers in the ‘Dasa tradition’. The Madarasaestablished by Mohammad Gavan in Bidar acquired the statusof an University during 14th Century. Later Kalaburagi became abastion of the philosophical school of Suffism and produced avery eminent saint and scholar, Hazrat Khwaja Banda Nawaz inthe 15th Century. Kalaburagi is blessed with another famoussaint, Shri Sharanabasaveshwara in the 19th Century. Thus theregion has the potential to recapture this intellectual andspiritual leadership and Gulbarga University is endeavouring itsbest to provide necessary stimulus and institutional support inthis direction.

Ancient educational institutions in the form of Agraharas,Brahmapuris, Ghatikasthanas and Mathas flourished in this regionwhich followed traditional methods of teaching. Mathas wereresidential schools where the teacher and the taught livedtogether. Agraharas and Brahmapuris were settlement ofscholars and separate arrangements existed for holistic teaching.Ghatikasthana was meant for conferring degrees or certifyingscholarships. ‘Maha Agrahara Nagai”, the ancient

University of Nagai situated at Nagai, Chittapur taluka ofKalaburagi District was established during the Rasthrakuta andChalukya kings (993 AD). It is said that about 250 students, six teachers and a librarian (Saraswati Bhandari) were engagedin imparting education there. During 1058 AD, this “NagaiAgrahara” was converted into ‘Ghatika Sthana’
