**CAPTAIN - Check the ciboria in the tabernacle and estimate how many consecrated hosts they contain. Leave all Consecrated Hosts in the Tabernacle.

>Determine the number of hosts needed for your mass. >Subtract the number of Consecrated Hosts in the Tabernacle. >Place the determined amount of Communion hosts into each ciborium, dividing them equally and stack

the ciboria. >The large “Priest’s” host should be placed on top of the smaller hosts in the top ciborium. >Reseal the storage bag carefully. >Cover the top ciborium with a pall or purificator, when placing these on the Gifts Table. Linens: There are four (4) types of linens: Small Purificator with cross in the middle– used for EM chalices Larger Purificator (wider) with large cross in the middle –for Father’s chalice Corporal (for use on the altar at consecration) - Larger with cross on one side Towels – used for hand-washing bowl for priest, for drying the Sacred Vessels, and to clean up spills. First Mass of the weekend (5:00 Saturday)– Check to make sure there are two clean Corporals on the altar! (see picture below) All Masses – Before Mass, check to make sure the Corporals are clean – change if necessary.

>Water for the small glass cruet should be poured from the gallon water bottle. >Fill the cruet to the neck to help the server avoid awkwardly tipping the cruet over Father’s fingers. >Fold a plain white towel and place it into the “hand-washing bowl”.

On the back credence table (Gifts Table) you will place:

• A small cruet of wine, for the Celebrant’s chalice filled as shown below. • The stacked ciboria containing the unconsecrated hosts with the Priest’s host on

top. Place a Pall on top of the stacked ciboria. • The small wine cruet will be returned to the back sacristy still containing

UNCONSECRATED wine. Please, cover this with the lid and save for the next mass.

• Later masses may have to add a small amount of wine to match the amount in the picture.

Glass bowl and towel for presider’s hand washing. Cruet filled with water – no lid A separate towel to be used in case of spills of the Precious Blood.

There should also be a towel under the ambo for this purpose on the other side of the sanctuary.

DURING MASS The Priest or Deacon will bring the EM Chalices up to the altar during the Presentation of the Gifts. IF there is no Deacon and a visiting priest does not do this, one of the EMs must bring the chalices to the altar DURING the OFFERTORY. The Priest or Deacon will go to the Tabernacle to retrieve the ciborium containing the Consecrated Hosts. Bow towards the altar and walk up the steps or ramp to stand behind the altar during “The Sign of Peace” (You should stand in the same order as the positions where you serve.) (see diagram) Presider will distribute Communion to the EM’s first. The Deacon will distribute chalices to the EMs. Cup Servers should step forward to receive the cup. Take the cup in one hand and the purificator with the other – at the same time. Serve the host minister next to you. Father will distribute the ciboria to the remaining EMs. Proceed to your station as soon as you receive your sacred vessel (and after Cup Minister has served the Precious Blood to other EMs). Begin serving the assembly right away. When your side of the church has been served, check the lines adjacent to you. Cup servers can stand next to each other to expedite the line. Servers of the Body of Christ can stand in front of the front pews to help. (See Diagram) ***EMs at positions 1 and 2 - When your line is finished, serve the choir, cantor, musician. If necessary, WAIT in positions 1b and 2b. AFTER serving the choir, return and help serve the center aisle, if needed.

Host Ministers Make eye contact with the communicant and smile while holding the host above the ciborium. Say, “The Body of Christ.” If a communicant does not respond, “Amen”, you should say “Amen”.

IF THE BODY OF CHRIST IS DROPPED: Either the EM or the communicant should pick it up immediately. If the communicant consumes it, it’s fine. If the communicant does not consume it, take the host and hold it to the side of the ciborium to be consumed after Communion. Distribute a new host to the communicant. IF A COMMUNICANT DOES NOT CONSUME THE HOST: The EM should leave their post, follow the communicant and ask the communicant to “please consume the Eucharist.” The Minister of the Precious Blood is usually the one who will observe this. Other EMs in the Assembly or an usher may step up to help if this should occur. Do not be embarrassed to approach someone. Just treat them respectfully, remembering that THIS IS THE BODY OF CHRIST, which should be treated with utmost reverence and protected from being defiled. IF THE COMMUNICANT DOESN’T APPEAR TO KNOW WHAT TO DO: Feel free to ask the person if they have received their First Communion. If not, say, “God loves you.” When someone approaches with crossed arms: Put the host back in the ciborium, make eye contact and say, “God loves you.” Do not make the Sign of the Cross or any kind of gesture.

Page 7: Guidelines for EXtraordinary Ministers 12-19 · On the back credence table (Gifts Table) you will place: • A small cruet of wine, for the Celebrant’s chalice filled as shown below

IF YOU RUN OUT OF HOSTS: Be aware of the number of people in your line. First go to the Host Minister closest to you to see if they have extra hosts. ONLY IF NECESSARY Break hosts by breaking them into the ciborium. ALL Host Ministers should proceed to the Tabernacle after communion. ANY REMAINING CONSECRATED HOSTS SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE Chapel of Repose (Tabernacle Room) and handed to the Priest or Deacon. Extraordinary Ministers should not consolidate the hosts, unless instructed by the priest to do so. Wait for the consecrated Hosts to be placed into the Tabernacle. When Tabernacle is closed, all bow, and return to your seats. One EM should return the empty ciboria to the sacristy. Cup Ministers Stand as far from your corresponding Host Minister as possible to prevent the line from backing up. Make eye contact with the communicant and smile while holding the chalice between you and say, “The Blood of Christ.” If a communicant does not respond, “Amen”, you should say “Amen”. Wipe the rim of the chalice with the purificator after each communicant is served. Wipe the inside as well as the outside rim. Use different sections of the purificator with each wipe of the chalice. Rotate the cup one-quarter turn before offering it to the next person. INTINCTION – dipping the Eucharist into the Chalice – is not allowed. If someone approaches the cup with the Host still in their hand, cover the chalice with the purificator and ask them to consume the host first. IF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD IS SPILLED: There are large purificators (white towels) located behind the Credence Table and behind the ambo to be used in case of a spill. The EM should retrieve the large purificator and blot up the spill immediately. DO NOT use the small purificator to blot up a spill! If it is a large spill, leave the purificator (towel) covering the Precious Blood. When mass is ended, go immediately and stand by the spill to protect the area from traffic. When the congregation has left, clean the spill with water and dry the area as best you can. Be sure to put the used purificators in the proper bin in the EM Room. BE AWARE of anyone who does not consume the host immediately after receiving it from the Host Minister. Follow them and ask them to consume the Host. *See instructions for Host Ministers After communion, return the chalice to the back sacristy and consume any remaining Precious Blood. Purify the chalice by pouring a small amount of water into the vessel, swirling it gently, and consuming the liquid. Cover the chalice with your purificator. Return to your place in the assembly quickly. Purify any ciboria brought back by the Host Minister. Purify the ciboria by picking up and consuming small particles of hosts. Pour a small amount of water into the ciborium, swirl it gently to pick up any particles, consume the liquid. Remember, ANY particle, no matter how small, is Jesus. DO NOT WASH any Sacred Vessels during Mass!

AFTER MASS: One EM should go to the back credence table (gifts table) and return the wine cruet lid to the back sacristy. Return to the Back Sacristy after the recessional hymn is finished. Return your crucifix to its hook.

Carefully wash (with your hands), dry, and return Sacred Vessels to the proper cupboards. Never use an abrasive to clean them. Dry the sink and counters. Place all used Linens in the proper bin.

Page 8: Guidelines for EXtraordinary Ministers 12-19 · On the back credence table (Gifts Table) you will place: • A small cruet of wine, for the Celebrant’s chalice filled as shown below

Earlier masses - drape the open towels over the side of the counter to dry a little before the next mass. Last mass – all towels are put into the bin with the purificators. LEAVE THE CORPORAL FOLDED when it is placed in the bin. Last Mass (5:00 Saturday and 5:30 Sunday) OR any mass if the Corporal is soiled, fold the Corporal on the Altar and place it with the soiled linens.
