INTRODUCTION WearepleasedthatyouhavechosentoundertakeyourgraduatestudiesinlandscapearchitectureattheUniversityofWashington.Manyoftheresourcesavailabletoyouareidentifiedinthismanual.Includedisinformationregardingdepartmentfaculty,students,facilities,andrandomhelpfulhints.Theinformationincludedisbynomeansexhaustive.Thegreatestresourceyouhaveiseachother.WeencourageeachofyoutoparticipatefullyinallDepartmentactivities.Yourparticipationintheacademicandextra-curricularaffairsiscertaintoenrichtheprogramandyourselves.Aboveall,suchsharedparticipationisthebasicstepinlearningtobealandscapearchitectintheserviceofsociety.WehopeyoufindthatthisguideinsomewayaddstoyoureducationalandpersonalexperiencesattheUniversity. TheDepartmentofLandscapeArchitectureisoneoffivedepartmentsintheCollegeofBuiltEnvironments.TheothersareArchitecture,ConstructionManagement,UrbanDesign&PlanningandRealEstate.TheLandscapeArchitecturegraduateenrollmentincludesapproximately75students.TheDepartmentisamemberoftheCouncilofEducatorsinLandscapeArchitecture,andisaccreditedbytheLandscapeArchitecturalAccreditationBoardoftheAmericanSocietyofLandscapeArchitects. TheDepartmentofLandscapeArchitectureofferstwoprofessionaldegrees:(1)theBachelorofLandscapeArchitecture(BLA),afive-yearprofessionalprogramprovidingdesignknowledgeandfocusingontraditionalprojectsinaliberalartscontext.Theprimaryobjectiveistoeducateprofessionallandscapearchitectswithabroadrangeofcompetenceinlandscapeplanninganddesign;asecondistoprovideopportunitiesforspecializationinselectedprofessionalareas.(2)TheMLAinLandscapeArchitecture,aprofessionalprogramemphasizestheconnectionbetweendesignandresearch,andfocusingonenvironmentalissues,emergingdesignsubjectareas,andprojectstypicallynewtotheprofession.Thedegreeforthisprogramisawardedafterthecompletionoftwoyearsifstudentshavecompletedaprofessionaldegreeprograminlandscapearchitecture(BLA)orarchitecture(BArch),orinthreeyearsifundergraduateworkisinanotherfieldnotalignedtolandscapearchitecture.

VISION OurVisionforLandscapeArchitectureistoleadtheallieddesignandplanningfieldstowardshelpingtocreateafuturethatissustainableandenhancesqualityoflife.WelooktoaccomplishthisthroughUrbanEcologicalDesign,whichintegratessite,landscape,andpeopleinadesignpracticethatisbothfunctionalandartful.Wehavemadealong-termcommitmenttoleadaninterdisciplinaryapproachtoproject-basedlearninginUrbanEcologicalDesignwithemphasisinourresearchandstudioprojectsonwaysthatwemightaddressissuesofEcologicalInfrastructure,Culturally-BasedPlace-Making,DesignforEcologicalLiteracy,andHumanandEnvironmentalHealth. Cultureplaysasignificantroleinourperception,interpretation,andexpressionofplace.Eachplaceistheproductoftheinteractionofculturalforcesonnaturalenvironments.Overtime,humanculturessimultaneouslyadapttheirnaturalenvironmentstotheirneedsandbecomeadaptedtotheuniqueconditionsinwhichtheyoccur.Theseinteractionscreatedistinctiveplacesthatembodyeachculture’sfunctionalneedsandvalues. Landscapearchitectureseekstounderstandthefitbetweencultureandthenaturalenvironmentthatisexpressedineachplacesothatourdesignworkmayrespondtotheuniqueneedsandvaluesofeachplace.Landscapearchitectsalsoplayasignificantroleinaddressinghistoricandcultural

landscapes.Werecognizethepotentialofpowerfulcontemporarysocial,economicandtechnologicalforcestodisconnectculturefromplacewiththeresultingsenseofindividualalienationanddisplacement.Whilewedonothavesingularanswerstotheseproblems,ourapproachtodesignattemptstoconsiderandreconcilethesefactorsinourwork.

CURRICULUMANDREQUIREMENTS CourseCreditRequirements

InordertobeawardedaMasterofLandscapeArchitecturedegree,thestudentmustsatisfactorilycompleteaminimumof72credithoursof400+levelworkinlandscapearchitectureandrelatedfields(63creditsofcourseworkand9ofthesis).Approved400-levelcoursesoutsidetheDepartmentofLandscapeArchitecturecanbeusedforelectivecredits. Full-timestudentsnormallytake12-15creditsperquarter(10creditsistheminimumforinternationalstudentsorstudentsreceivingfinancialaid-MEMO9). A3.0cumulativegradepointaverageinallcoursesisrequiredforgraduationanda3.0averageisrequiredinallMLAcorecourses.PleaseseetheGradingPoliciesbelowforfurtherinformationaswellastheGraduateSchoolMemo16.

CurriculumRequirements

TheMLAcurriculumatUWconsistsoftwoparts–BasicCoreCurriculumandGraduateCurriculum.Typically,studentswithapreviousdegreeinlandscapearchitectureorarchitecturebegintheircourseworkwiththeRequiredGraduateCurriculumstudios,whilestudentsfromothereducationalbackgroundsbeginwiththeBasicCoredesignstudios. TheRequiredGraduateCurriculumsetstheminimumacademicworkrequiredforthedegreeat72approved400+levelcredits.StudentsintheMLAI(3-year)programwilltakesignificantlymorecreditsduetotherequirementsofthepreparatoryyear.Anareaofspecializationoughtbedevelopedintheareaofastudent'sindividualinterests,drawingonthe12creditsofelectives(at400+level).Thisencouragesstudentstodeepentheirknowledgeinaparticulararea,whilemaintainingsubstantialflexibilityforeachindividual. Ingeneral,specificprogramrequirementsarearrangedtofiteachstudent'sindividualbackground.Tooutlinetheindividualcourseofstudy,astudentmustmeetwiththeGraduateProgramCoordinatorduringthefirstquarteroftheirstudytodeterminewhichrequirementscanbewaivedandwhatcoursesmustbetaken.Anychangesafterthefirstquartermustgothroughthecurriculumpetitionprocess. WaiverofRequiredCoreCourses Incertaincases,whereastudenthascompletedprioracademicworkinlandscapearchitectureand/orhashadsubstantialprofessionalworkingexperienceinlandscapearchitecture,awaiverofarequiredcourseorcoursesmaybeapproved.Requestsforsuchcorecoursewaivers,arereviewedbytheGraduateProgramCoordinator,onacase-by-casebasis. IncominggraduatestudentswillmeetwiththeGraduateProgramCoordinatorwhentheyareadmittedtotheprogrambutnolaterthantheendoftheirfirstquarterintheprogramtoagreeupontheircourseofstudy.Thiswillincludedecisionsonwaiversofrequiredcoursesthataremadebasedonpriorcourseworkorprofessionalexperience.TheGPCmayreferstudentstoindividualfacultyforapprovalofspecificwaivers.TheGPCwillreviewallproposedwaiverswiththefacultyduringafacultymeetingduringthefirstquarteroftheacademicyear.

Beyondthefirstquarterofyourstudy,requestswillrequireawrittenpetitiontotheDepartmentexplaininginspecifictermswhythestudentconsidersthewaiverappropriate.RequestforCurriculumPetitionformsareavailablefromtheDepartmentStaff.Facultyassociatedwiththerequiredcourseshouldbeconsulted,bythestudent,priortocorrespondencewiththeGraduateProgramCoordinator.Whenadecisionismade,theoriginalrequestwillbeincludedinthestudent'sfileandacopyreturnedtothestudentwithanotationofthedecisionbytheDepartment'sProgramCoordinator(whowillconsulttheCurriculumCommitteeasdeemedappropriate).Itisadvisedthatstudentsmaintainacopyofthesewaiversfortheirpersonalrecords.Coursesforwhichwaiversareapproveddonotprovidecreditstowardthedegreerequirements.

WaiverofLARC441_AdvancedDigitalMedia

Eachstudentisrequiredtotakeaminimumof3creditsinthetopicareaofadvanceddigitalmedia.ThedepartmentannuallyoffersDigitalMediaII(LARC441)thoughapprovedcoursesmaybesubstitutedforthisrequirement.IfstudentsdemonstrateproficiencyinRhinoceros,GrasshopperandAutoCAD,theymaybewaivedfromtherequirement.WaiversareavailableonlytostudentswhoarestudyingabroadorhaveothersignificantcircumstancesthatpreventthemfromtakingLARC441.ThecourseinstructorandtheBLAorMLAProgramCoordinatormustapproverequestsforwaiversaheadoftimeand,later,materialssubmittedforthewaiver.Failuretorequestawaiveraheadoftimeand/ortosubmitrequiredwaivermaterialswillforfeitthepossibilityofawaiver.Fordetailson441waiveroptionspleasevisithttps://catalyst.uw.edu/workspace/bspen/57178/

ApprovalofCreditsforCourseworkDoneElsewhere

Upto12creditsforrelevantgraduate-levelcourseworkdoneasagraduatestudentatanotherUniversityorcollegeandnotappliedtowardanotherdegreemaybeapprovedforuseinfulfillingtheMaster'sdegreecreditrequirements.ThisprocedurerequiresaformalpetitiontotheDepartment'sGraduateProgramCoordinatorandtheGraduateSchool.FormsforpetitionareavailablefromtheDepartmentStaff.

Electives Allcoursestakentofulfillthe72-creditdegreerequirementandnotincludedintherequiredcurriculumaretermedelectives,andmaybeselectedfromamongcoursesofferedbytheDepartmentofLandscapeArchitectureorotherdepartmentsoftheUniversity.StudentsareencouragedtoinvestigatethecourseofferingsofotherdepartmentsthroughreferencetotheGeneralCataloganddirectcontactwithvariousdepartments.Onlycreditstakenatthe400-levelorabovecanbecountedtowardsagraduatedegree.

Concurrentdegrees

TheDepartmentoffersconcurrentdegreeswiththeMUPintheDepartmentofUrbanDesignandPlanningandtheMArchintheDepartmentofArchitecture.PleaseseetheDepartmentProgramCoordinatorandtheDepartmentWebsiteformoreinformation.Inaddition,studentsareabletoobtaininformalconcurrentdegreesbypursuingtwodegreesfromdifferentdepartmentssimultaneously.Forthoseinterestedinpursuingtheinformalconcurrentdegrees,pleaseconsultwiththeGraduateProgramCoordinator.

CertificatePrograms TheCollegeoffersanumberofcertificateprograms.Theprogramsthataremostoftenpursuedbylandscapearchitecturestudentsinclude:PreservationPlanningandDesignandUrbanDesign Informationregardingtheseprogramsisavailabletostudentsathttp://www.be.washington.edu/academics/certificates/home.Whiletheseprogramsprovidestructuredopportunitiesforprofessionalspecialization,studentsarefreeto,andcommonlydo,designtheirownsetsofcoursesforthispurpose.

GradedandNon-GradedCourses

AllcoursesthatarenotrequiredcorecoursesandnotspecifiedasCredit/NoCredit(CR/NC)courses,maybetakenonanon-gradedbasis.Atthetimeofregistration,thestudentmustspecifythosecoursess/hehaselectedtotakeinthisnon-gradedmanner.Thefacultymemberassignsanumbergraderegardlessofthestudent'snon-gradedoption,andisnotinformedofthestudent'schoiceinthismatter.TheUniversityadministrationthenconvertstheassignedgradetoSatisfactory(S)orNon-Satisfactory(NS).ThosecoursesassessedonanS/NSbasisdonotcountinastudent'sGPA. StudentsaregenerallyineligibletoelectS/NS(satisfactory/notsatisfactory)foranyLARCHprefixedcoursesunlessallothercourserequirementsfortheMasterofLandscapeArchitecturedegree(andanycertificate)havebeenmet.Ifthetenthdayclasssheetindicatesastudentisregisteredforthisoption,checkwiththestudentand/orgraduateadvisorabouttheappropriatenessofthisoption.

RemovalofIncompleteGrades

Astudentmayrequestagradeof"incomplete"forcourseworkforreasonsspecifiedinboththeTimeScheduleandtheGeneralCatalog.Thereisarestrictiononthelengthoftimetakentoremoveanincompletegrade.Toobtaincreditforthecourse,astudentmustconvertanincompleteintoapassinggradebythelastdayofthenextquarterinresidence.Thisrulemaybewaived,bythedeanoftheschoolorcollege,inwhichthecourseisoffered.Innocasemayanincompletebeconvertedintoapassinggradeafteralapseoftwoyearsormore.

Capstone TheDepartmenthascompiledtheCapstoneGuidelinesthatareavailableontheDepartmentWebsite.TheCapstoneisa9-creditresearchand/ordesigninquiryonatopicrelatedtothestudent'sareaofspecialization.SeetheGuidelinesfordetails.

ProcedureforReceiptofMLADegree

(SeetheGraduateSchoolwebsite:http://www.grad.washington.edu) 1.ApplicationforGraduation ItisnecessarytobeenrolledintheUniversityforaminimumof2creditsduringthequarterinwhichoneintendstograduate.Applicationforgraduationmustbemadeonlineduringthefirsttwoweeksofthatquarter. 2.ReviewofCurriculum WhenanApplicationforMaster'sDegreeisreceivedfromtheGraduateSchoolbytheDepartment,theGraduateProgramAssistantreviewsthestudent'sfiletodeterminethatallDepartmentalandGraduateSchoolrequirementshavebeenfulfilled.Consequently,itisadvisabletocheckwiththeassistant3quartersbeforeapplyingforgraduation,inordertomakesurethatallgraduationrequirementshavebeenmet.Iftheassistantdoesfindanyproblems,s/hewillgetintouchwithyouasquicklyaspossible. 3.Deadlines Underthethesisoption,forgraduationinaparticularquarter,thestudentmustfiletwocompletedcopiesofthethesis,signedbyhisorherThesisCommitteeChair,alongwiththeApplicationforDegreesignedbytheChairandallcommitteemembers,withtheGraduateSchoolbythelastdayof

finalexams.Ineithercase,iftheworkisnotsubmittedandacceptedbythelastdayoffinals,thestudentmustregisterforthefollowingquarterforatleast2credits.

STUDENTADVISING GraduateProgramCoordinator

TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorisafacultymemberwhoisanofficialrepresentativeofanacademicunitthatoffersagraduatedegreeprogram.S/headvises,counsels,andassistsstudentsoncurriculumandprogramrelatedissues.Currently,AssociateProfessorJulieJohnsonisservingastheGraduateProgramCoordinator. TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorarrangesforandoverseestheacademicadvisingofstudents,participatesintheadmissionprocess,advisesonsuccessfulcompletionofDepartmentalandGraduateSchooldegreerequirementsandonexceptionstoestablishedrulesorprocedures,aswellasanymatterconcerningtheGraduateSchool.Concerningthelatter,petitionstotheDepartmentandtotheGraduateSchool,mustbeactedonbytheGraduateProgramCoordinator. TheGraduateProgramCoordinatorprovidesindividualprogramadvisingforMLAstudentsthroughregularofficehoursandbyindividualappointments.Typically,anadvisingmeetingopentoallMLAstudentsisalsoheldbeforetheregistrationperiodbeginsineachquarter.Fortechnicalissuesconcerningregistrationandcreditrequirements,studentsmayconsultwithJoAnneEdwards,theProgramAdvisor.

ProgramAdvisor

TheProgramAdvisorisastaffmemberwhoprovidesanumberofservicestostudentsintheDepartmentincludingassistingwithregistration,providinginformationonCollegeandUniversitypoliciesandprocedures,reviewingstudentprogresstowardgraduation,andprovidinginformationtoprospectivestudents.TheAdvisormaintainsstudentfilesandreceivesandinputsadmissionapplications.TheAdvisorisavailableonawalk-inbasisorbyappointmentduringregularworkinghours.JoAnneEdwardsservesastheProgramAdvisor.

QuarterlyAdvisingMeetings Eachquarter,beforeregistrationforthefollowingquarterbegins,anadvisingmeetingwillbeheldby

theGraduateProgramCoordinator,inwhichcourseopportunities,programchanges,anddepartmentupdatesareannounced.Studentswillberemindedofthecoursestheyneedtotaketostayonsequence.Thisisalsoanopportunityforstudentstoaskquestionsandseekadvice.

Eachyear,anumberofcoursesareofferedassectionsof498and598.Thesespecialtopicscoursesprovideanopportunitytopresentexperimentalcoursesthatmaylaterbecomeregularofferingsunderotherpermanentcoursenumbers,andtopresentcoursesoncurrentissuesorusingtemporaryfacultyresources,inwhichcasethecoursemayonlybeofferedonce.Normally,theDepartmentpublishesdescriptionsof498and598coursestobeofferedthefollowingquartershortlybeforeregistrationtoinformstudentsoftheseopportunities.Studentswhowishmoreinformationonsuchacourseshouldspeakwiththefacultymemberofferingthecourse.

IndependentStudy–LArch600

ThefacultyoftheDepartmentrecognizesthevalueofitsLArch600courseoffering.GraduateSchoolMemorandum#36describesthepurposeofthiscourseasprovidinganopportunityfor"individualreadingsorstudy,includingindependentstudyinpreparationfordoctoralexamination,research,etc."SinceLArch600requiressubstantialfacultytimewiththestudent,thesponsoringfacultymembershouldascertainwhethertheproposalbythestudentcouldbeadequatelyaddressedbyotheravailablecoursework.
