I came up with the Hourglass layout in late 2018 to change
up the portrait spread that I was using up to that time for
the monthly horoscope readings.
I came across simplified versions of the Hourglass through
other Lenormand resources, and tweaked it to
accommodate the three Astroclock cards into the middle
row.
Like most multi-line Lenormand layouts, it’s possible to
combine the cards in many different ways. Such is the joy
and fun from reading Lenormand!
In this guide, I cover three versions of the Hourglass: Small,
medium, and large. The large Hourglass is the one you see in
my 2019 monthly forecast videos.

I want to introduce you to the concepts of sentences and
structures because they’ll come up in how we interpret the
Hourglass.
A sentence is a string of two or more adjacent cards,
whereas a structure is a string of two or more cards that are
not adjacent.
In a Lenormand layout whose configuration allows it, we can
connect cards that are not adjacent and interpret them in
combinations. Discovering these kinds of connections
makes a Lenormand reading juicy with details and secrets!

SENTENCES VS STRUCTURES

You can shuffle and deal the cards anyway you like as long
as the cards are well mixed up and there’s no bias from a
previous layout.
The order of the cards in the Hourglass versions starting on
the next page are my suggestions. Feel free to layout the
cards in a way that makes sense to you.
I’ve also suggested how the different sentences and
structures can be interpreted, but also feel free to make
sense of them in a way that resonates with you.

In a small Hourglass, we have just one card in the middle.
But it nevertheless produces 6 two-card sentences!
I offer you my suggestions to interpret these pairs, but feel
free to come up with your own approach.

LARGEHOURGLASS
In the same way that I consciously place the Astroclock
cards in the middle line of the large Hourglass, you can
consciously select the middle card(s) of your chosen
Hourglass to represent the issue.
These consciously selected cards are called signifiers and
they’re selected based on the topic they represent.
You can learn about how signifiers are used in detail in
Lenormand Reader’s Handbook Of Layouts or use the
for a detailed explanation of the
cards.
