designed specially for international students

who want to start earning credits toward

their bachelor’s degree at a US university

while improving their English skills.

Available in fall and spring semesters, this

Pathway offers you more English language

preparation than our other programs. You

can begin your academic studies with other

Mason students sooner than what our

traditional Academic English plus Pathway

programs offered.

2-Semester PathwayOur 2-Semester Pathway program provides

an excellent balance of academic and English

language preparation. You can start in fall

or spring semesters, and we guarantee

matriculation to a Mason undergraduate

program when you complete your Pathway.

It does not typically add any time to the

length of your bachelor’s degree.

1-Semester PathwayOur 1-Semester Pathway program is for

you if you have good academic grades and

need little or no English preparation before

starting your bachelor’s degree. You can

begin this program during the fall or spring

semesters.

Additional Entry Requirements1 Composition: A portfolio of compositions and

recordings of the compositions. Jazz Studies: Submit a video recording of five (5)

tunes in contrasting styles: Blues, Bop, Fusion, Cool, Swing, Early Jazz, Latin, etc., résumé and a complete list of all pieces. Applicant may use a recorded accompaniment of play-a-long. Rhythm section instruments will demonstrate techniques idiomatic to the instrument e.g. comping, walking, various grooves. Applicants should also demonstrate knowledge of the 21 scales used in jazz.

Pedagogy: Submission of a studio teaching demo, no more than 15 minutes in length; audition in the primary applied teaching area is also required. Applicants are expected to have large and small ensemble experience on the major instrument and should have presented a full solo recital or equivalent. All music teaching experience should be summarized.

Performance (Single Instrument or Voice, or Multiple Instruments): Prepare approximately 20 minutes of repertoire in varying styles and submit video recording. Voice must prepare repertoire to include foreign language pieces such as French, Italian or German. (Percussion): Submit a recording of solos in each instrumental area, including a major four mallet solo marimba work. Orchestral excerpts and multi-percussion solos are also recommended.
