Global Unification Youth Summer School participants take action on disaster risk

    reduction

A group of participants to the Global

    Unification Youth Summer School

    on Thursday, 19th

    August embarked

on the Association organised clean-up exercise along the Babun Fatty

Road in Serrekunda. The gutters and

the streets were all cleaned up to the

market. The initiative was part of the month-

    long summer school activities aimed

at engaging young people in the Gambia in community services during the summer

    holidays.

Speaking at the occasion, the Youth Summer School assistance Coordinator and Head ofGender and Women Welfare unit of Global Unification, Jalika Keita, said the exercise

was meant to reduce the vulnerability of the area to inundation, specially in this peak

period when the country is experiencing torrential rains. She observed that the draining

and removal of the debris will enhance the free flow of the water thus reduce flooding.

The cleaning of these getters also reduces mosquito lava thus discourage breeding of

mosquitoes, which otherwise cause malaria. In this regard, the participation of young

people in this noble exercise cannot be over-emphasised, she said.

Mrs. Keita used the opportunity to appeal to shop owners around the market as well as

passers-by to desist from the habit of indiscriminate dumping of litters in the gutters. This, she said will make the work of Kanifing Municipality almost impossible as anytime the

gutters are cleaned, they will soon be inundated again. She emphasised the need to

embark on vigorous campaign to sensitize the community against this practice.

Also speaking at the occasion, Ebrima Dem, the National Representative of Global

Unification, expressed his satisfaction with the work done and enthusiasm shown by the

young people in contributing to the development of their community. Here, we have

children as young as seven taking part in this noble exercise, which shows the level of

commitment of these children to the service of their community. Between 9 am to 1 pm,

the whole of the gutters from Babun Fatty junction to Serekunda is cleaned. To me this isamazing, he said.

Mr. Dem, then expressed his sincere appreciation to National Disaster Management

Agency, Kanifing region, for supporting the activity by providing some cleansing gears

and a tractor to disburse the collected rubbish. He however appealed to parastatals and

other government departments to support and provide the organization with more gears

such as masks, gumboots, overalls, and gloves, to facilitate their work and protect the
