Don’t have time to be on a traditional troop? Here is the solution… become a Juliette!Girls can join Girl Scouts as Juliettes (individually-registered girls, not in troops) and can participate in different types of activities. These activities provide alternate membership options (pathways) outside of a troop. Pathways include events, camp, and/or a series. For example, a girl can participate in an event pathway simply by registering for program activities in this publication.

Advocacy The Advocacy initiative inspires girls to lead with courage, confidence, and character to identify their passions and interests to make a lasting and impactful change in the world. The initiative focuses on government, civic engagement, environmental stewardship, human rights, and social justice.

BE COUNTED AND BE HEARD!How often have you noticed something that really needed to be changed and wondered, “Why isn’t someone doing something about that?” Girls have a lot to say about what matters most in their lives and are savvy in developing creative solutions to address those issues. In Girl Scouting, we view advocacy as a critical leadership skill for girls. Participating in advocacy activities can be very empowering, especially when you realize your ability to influence change. Participate in our Advocacy activities and learn about the many issues our world is facing and how you can make a change in the world! Some upcoming activities include A Day Without, Making Waves, and our U.E.A. Staycation.

STEMSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) helps girls develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that are useful in all careers and life pursuits. We make the connection for girls between everyday life and science through hands-on experiences and access to inspiring role models.

PUSH BOUNDARIES, TEST LIMITS, AND LOOK AT THE WORLD AROUND YOU WITH INQUISITIVE EYES!STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math; this initiative gives girls the opportunity to explore their world, scientifically. Girls will learn mysteries of the universe, find clues about past civilizations, take a look under the hood and understand how an engine works, and explore high-rise construction techniques.

OutdoorsThere are a lot of research studies showing when girls have childhood experiences with the outdoors and nature, it can have positive influences on the rest of their lives. Girl Scouts of Utah have two beautiful camp properties where girls will build new skills, practice lead-ership, develop an appreciation for nature and themselves, and of course, have fun year round.

THE NATURE ExPERIENCEThere is a lot of research-based evidence showing significant changes in childhood re-lating to girl’s experiences in nature. A recent Outdoor Foundation study found a significant decline in girl’s participation in outdoor recre-ation. The Nature Conservancy also surveyed children to understand their connection with nature. They found:

• 88% of children reported using a com-puter almost every day, while only 11% of children reported visiting a local park or natural area almost every day.

• 86% of children said that it is “cool” to do things that protect the environment

• 90% of children who spent time outside said being in nature and taking part in out-door activities helped relieve stress.

Spending time in nature has proved to reduce behavioral problems, and improve moods, attention spans and short term memory.

Girl Scouts of Utah offers many programs that teach about the natural world in a new and innovative way. Girls can come to summer resident camp or attend one of our weekend minicamps for a nature experience. Troops have the opportunity to rent a cabin at one of our camps and create their own, unique memories. The Outdoor initiative doesn’t just mean sleeping in the dirt; it’s about utilizing our natural playground that is all around us while learning life lessons and skills.

Broom Hockey and Graceful Gliders

Have you always wanted to play hockey but you don’t know how to skate very well? Then this is for you! You will get to wear your tennis shoes on the ice! Try your skill at a half rink broom hockey game. Time will be spent learning about broom hockey, practicing skills, followed by a scrimmage game! This is a special session just for Girl Scouts so we have the ice to ourselves! Most important: for traction on the ice, wear shoes that have tread on the bottom.

Daisies: Grades K-1Girl Scout Daisies meet in a nurturing, inclusive environment. They go on trips, learn about nature and science, and explore their communities.

Brownies: Grades 2-3Girl Scout Brownies work together, earn Girl Scout Brownie Awards, and explore their community. Friendship, fun, and age-appropriate activities begin at the Girl Scout Brownie meeting and move out to the community and wider world.

Juniors: Grades 4-5Girl Scout Juniors earn badges and discover what girl power is all about through new activities and by learning to take charge of their own plans. They gain self-confidence as they explore the world in partnership with their troop/group leaders.

Cadettes: Grades 6-8

Seniors: Grades 9-10

Ambassadors: Grades 11-12

Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors participate in Girl Scouting in many ways. Under the guidance of a trained adult advisor, girls mix and match activities and resources to suit their needs while giving back to their communities. They connect with each other and build self-esteem and confidence in their skills as they work on projects and gain life experiences.

Join us at BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures for a day of learning and fun! Explore and participate in hands-on activities. Current exhibitions include Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya, featuring textiles from the Maya people in Guatemala and Mexico, and Concealing Faces: Revealing Expressions, featuring masks from Mexico. Girl Scout Lagoon Day

This isn’t your ordinary day at Lagoon… it’s Girl Scout Lagoon Day and we want to flood the park with Rollercoaster-riding, Bumper car-bumping, Jet Star-jammin’ Girl Scouts! As if all the Lagoon attractions aren’t enough, we’re throwing in some extra fun. All participating Girl Scouts will receive a free pedometer, you can wear it all day and log your steps. The Girl Scout with the most steps will receive a prize. As you’re making tracks all over the park, Girl Scout staff members will be on the lookout for you! Wear a hat, t-shirt, or anything else that shows your Girl Scout spirit and you might be spotted to win a free prize! Hike and Backpack Cache (a series)

Come see the beautiful canyons of Cache National Forest in the best way possible: by hiking and backpacking! Start with a 3-hour hike and work up weekly to a 3-day, 2-night backpack trip. See gorgeous wildflowers, wind-carved caves, fossils, sinks, tiger salamanders, cliffs, waterfalls and fabulous vistas. Earn parts of the Cadette Trailblazing and Trees badges, and the Senior Adventurer badge. The trails we will visit include Wind Caves, Bunchgrass Creek, Naomi Peak and High Creek Lake. Fee covers meals and a patch or walking stick medallion. All participants should be in good physical condition and able to hike 3-4 miles per day. Planning My Future – Get Started!

Learn how to plan your future! How much will it cost to go to college? What will you earn in your dream job? Will you have enough money to own your own home and car? It takes planning to be successful! Girl Scouts of Utah’s Junior Achievement (JA) Program uses hands-on experiences—you’ll learn about money, taxes, salaries and discover how to maintain a personal budget. Dash for Organ Donation Service Project

Would you like to learn about organ and tissue donation and help save lives? Get involved with the Dash for Organ Donation 2013! For the past 17 years this event has raised public awareness about the critical need for organ and tissue donors. Girl Scouts will receive age-appropriate information about organ and tissue donation and can be an event volunteer. At Girl Scouts of Utah, we are building a culture of philanthropy and encouraging all who believe in the Girl Scout mission to take an active role in giving. We all have a responsibility to ensure that every girl can have the Girl Scout experience.

It costs the Girl Scouts of utah $488 per year to support each girl. Our Cookie Program, events and camp fees raise about $423 per girl. This means that each year we need to raise funds to support the remaining $65 cost per girl. Your gift will make a difference to every girl; just ask a girl who would not otherwise be able to go to camp, have a uniform, or even be a Girl Scout without your support.

Hawks in Flight

Join Hawk Watch International and explore the wild world of raptors. Travel on a weekend trip to Commissary Ridge, Wyoming and learn how to identify raptors with binoculars as they travel on their migration south for the winter. Zoo Snooze

Come spend the night at the Zoo! During your Zoo Snooze you will enjoy a staff-led tour of the Zoo grounds and meet some of our animal ambassadors. Girl Scout Juniors and Cadettes are invited to go on an urban hiking adventure in Salt Lake City. Ride TRAx throughout the Salt Lake Valley for two days and learn the importance of being “Green.” On Thursday we will visit the University of Utah’s College of Engineering and the College of Science where we will probe into the vortex of our imaginations, afterwards we will explore the great outdoors and our expansive changing fall colors. Friday will take us into the world of living healthy where we will taste and experience the realms of making good choices, we will end our day with discovering the role of government, its impact on our community, and how YOU can get involved and make the change you see is needed in our world. Archery Adventure Minicamp

Archery is a great sport for girls, building confidence, and coordination. In this adventure minicamp, you will make a quiver to hold your arrows, design your own target, learn proper archery form and technique, play archery games and learn to score in a friendly competition of skill. Tracy Aviary Animal Habitats Badge Workshop

Come enjoy an afternoon filled with discovery and surprises at Tracy Aviary as experts help you explore the in-and-outs of our local feathered wildlife and the habitats they call home. While earning your Junior Animal Habitats badge, you’ll get to meet some of our favorite feathered friends up close and personal as you learn how birds survive in so many different habitats, what challenges those environments are facing and how you can help. Make a Difference Day

Join us, in a day of service to celebrate our founder, Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday, as well as National “Make a Difference” Day! Statewide we’ll be Trick-or-Treating for food to be donated to local food pantries throughout the state. Troops will be asked to distribute fliers and donation bags in their neighborhoods the week of October 14th-19th with event details and instructions for donations. Girls and leaders will then return in costume on Saturday, October 26th to collect donations and do some “reverse trick-or-treating.” Cost includes event patch, refreshments, and donation to JLWFF. Future Legislators

How is a bill created and made into law? Come spend the night with fellow Girl Scouts and learn how to find common ground in a democratic government. Legislators Jennifer Seelig and Rebecca Chavez-Houck from the Utah House of Representatives will join us to explore the process of creating a bill and making it into law. Before we go to sleep on Friday we will create leadership teams and committees and on Saturday we will take an urban hiking adventure to the Utah State Capitol to present and debate your bill on the floor. O.W.L.-Backpacking Adventure

Spend the weekend learning the basics of backpacking on one of Utah’s hiking trails! We will begin our outdoor adventure Friday night as we set up camp near the trailhead and cook on outdoor stoves. Saturday will be spent hiking and enjoying each other’s company in the great outdoors! We will campout Saturday night and then start our hike back on Sunday. Registering for Activities

Girls who participate in pathways besides the troop can join in a variety of activities simply by registering for them. These girls create their own unique Girl Scout experience their way. An icon indicating “girl only” is listed if girls can attend an event without an adult accompanying them (adult supervision is provided).

Supervision of girls: • Girls who register individually without an adult are placed into a

group and supervised by a volunteer or paid staff member.

• Girls may register individually without an adult for many events (see event description), however, You & Me and troop only programs require adults.

• Girl Scouting is possible because of volunteers. Adults are encouraged to register for and attend events to help supervise girls. Program descriptions list when additional adult volunteers are needed (these volunteers are in addition to troop leaders and parents/guardians registered for programs).

Troop registrationA troop may register and attend an event or activity as a group. When four or more girls from the same troop register for a program, an adult affiliated with the troop must register and attend the event with the girls. Troop leaders must supervise their troops at events they attend.General registration Information

For insurance purposes, girls and adults must be registered with Girl Scouts to participate in most programs. Family members and the community may participate in specially designated programs.

Philosophy: An activity scholarship should fill a specific financial need. It is not a reward for being a “good Girl Scout,” nor is it a way to repay volunteer work a parent might have done in Girl Scouting. It is a way for Girl Scouts of Utah to help a Girl Scout participate in an experience in which she would otherwise not be able to because of financial constraints. The decision to grant an activity scholarship, and the amount, is made on the basis of information given on the application form. All information is kept confidential and discussed only by those responsible for allocating the money.

Guidelines for Granting an Activity Scholarship• The request must be made on a current application form and

must be completed in its entirety.

• The dollar amount of the scholarship granted is based on availability of funds and apparent need.

• Scholarships will be granted only to currently-registered girl members, not troops.

• Families are expected to pay a portion of the expense for the event or camp.

• Participants in Girl Scouts of the USA international-, national-, or council-sponsored opportunities may receive up to one-fourth of the actual event fees in activity scholarship/stipend. Event applications must be received by published event registration deadlines. This applies to individual girls only, not troops.

• All activity credits must be used for program fees before the activity scholarship will be granted. Activity credits may be used for transportation and published fees only. Additional activity

fees and personal items are the responsibility of the participant.

• The scholarship may be based on the number of requests from the same family and on the total income composition.

• The scholarship is non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.

• Activity scholarships will be granted for only one like event per program year, per girl. For example, a girl may apply for a scholarship for resident camp and day camp, or resident camp and a program event, but not resident camp and troop camp in the same summer.

• Events that will be considered for scholarships are all Girl Scouts of Utah-sponsored activities, events, and camps on a council-wide, national, or international level, and all GSUSA-sponsored destinations listed on GSUSA’s web site or other material published by the national organization.

Planning Trips with Girl Scouts?

A Girl Scout trip is an opportunity for girls to have fun, experience adventure, and enrich the ongoing Girl Scout program.

Sometimes a trip is the culmination of a progression of activities that the girls are already engaged in. The online self−study

training will give you the knowledge of how to plan a trip that meets the Girl Scout travel progression. Regardless of age, girls should start with simple trips if they have never traveled or traveled with the current girls in the group. To access this training, visit www.gsutah.org.

Nestled within Salt Lake City’s centrally located Liberty Park, Tracy Aviary is the largest and oldest public aviary in the country and has been a unique asset to residents of the Salt Lake valley since 1938. Tracy Aviary celebrates the unique opportunity to connect visitors with nature and the environment all through the magic of birds. With funding from Salt Lake County taxpayers, support from local foundations and individuals, the staff is working to establish a new vision for Tracy Aviary as the “Aviary of the Americas.” With all of the recent changes, if you haven’t been to Tracy Aviary lately, you simply haven’t been!
