Harbor were named The North American Folk Music Chart’s Album of the Year and Song of the Year for 2013 and remain on the chart since it’s release in April of 2013. Fusing folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock, and a cap-pella singing, Brother Sun is an explosion of musical diver-sity and harmony, in the finest of male singing traditions.

From three major points on the map Boston, New York, and Chicago – Greg Greenway, Pat Wictor, and Joe Jencks have blended themselves into Brother Sun: a unique celebration of the amazing power of singing together. As they will tell you, the music of Brother Sun is not resident in any one of them – but rather it exists in the space be-tween them. Audiences feel this sincerity immediately, and, their music and message appeals to fans of both contemporary and traditional music. The Band’s combined musical skills make for an unforgettable experience - three rich voices blending on a well-crafted foundation of guitar, slide guitar, piano, ukulele, and bouzouki.

Tickets are $15. For more information call 603-436-4762.

at 2 p.m., Woody Pringle and Marek Bennett will present an overview of the American Civil War through the lens of period music. Held at Tuck Museum, au-dience members will participate and sing along as the presenters explore lyrics, documents, and visual images from sources such as the Library of Congress.

Through camp songs, parlor music, hymns, battlefield rallying cries, and fiddle tunes Pringle and Bennett examine the folksong as a means to enact

mark as veteran touring singer-songwriters, but Brother Sun is no songwriter’s round. The trio’s harmonies, as much as their lyrics, tell what they are about: warm as a campfire, stirring as a gospel church, rousing as a call to arms. way, Joe Jencks and Pat Wictor pooled their voices as Brother Sun in 2011, the folk world was enriched by their harmony, hu-manity, and humor. In the years since, their bond with each other and their fans has only deepened. If there’s any justice (something they care deeply about), their superb sophomore release, Some Part of the Truth, should bring the warmth of Brother Sun to a whole new world hungry for the healing power of their music.” said John Platt, WFUV - New York. The group will perform on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m., South Church, 292 State Street, Portsmouth.

Members of the harmony trio Brother Sun have made their

living history, share perspectives, influence public perceptions of events, and simultaneously fuse and conserve cultures in times of change. Showcasing numerous instruments, the presenters chal-lenge participants to find new connections between song, art, and politics in American history.

Generic Theater started over 3 decades ago with a pro-duction of one-acts, and con-tinued for the first ten years or so with a focus on this form, which allows directors as well as actors to develop a variety of skills. Lately they have fo-cused mainly on full length plays.

plays each. Joining them are veteran GT actors Cary Wen-dell and Betsy Kimball. Kolby Hume and Rob Richards join the company for the first time.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Generic Theater since they began back in 1982,” said ACT ONE’s Executive Director Stephanie Nugent, sponsor of the production. “They just keep getting better and better. Au-diences who saw their recent productions of August: ‘Osage County’ and ‘Little Gem’ can attest to that - really amazing work!”

PORTSMOUTH -Visitors can experience

island life and learn about his-toric shipwrecks of New Eng-land while relaxing at the Isles of Shoals, six miles off the NH coast, from September 5 through September 7.

Open to the public, the weekend program entitled “The Undersea History of the Isles of Shoals” is sponsored by the Isles of Shoals Historical and Research Association (ISHRA). Featured speakers will tell true tales of historic shipwrecks around the Shoals, Boon Island and coastal New England.

Among the speakers will be Stephen Erickson, co-author of “Boon Island: A True Story of Mutiny, Shipwreck and Can-nibalism,” Warren Riess, author of “Angel Gabriel: The Elusive English Galleon,” who person-ally recovered nine cannons from the Boon Island wreck, and Ray Demers, who discovered the wreck of the 1744 Royal Navy ship Asterea in the Piscataqua River.

Conference participants will leave Portsmouth mid-after-noon Friday, September 5, aboard the Thomas Laighton and return

Sunday afternoon, September 7. Casual social events, island strolls and a candlelit service in the 214-year-old Gosport Chapel will round out the weekend’s ac-tivities.

Attendees will stay in rustic yet comfortable accommodations in the historic Oceanic Hotel and surrounding buildings on Star Island. For more information, visit starisland.org or call 617-334-5675.

On Sept. 8, we observe National Grandparents

Day. If you have grandchil-dren, they will hopefully mark this occasion by sending a card, making a call or, best of all, paying a visit. But however your grandchildren express their feelings for you, you undoubtedly have a very big place in your heart for them. In fact, you may well be plan-ning on including your grand-children in your estate plan. If that’s the case, you’ll want to do the best you can to preserve the size of your estate — with-out sacrificing the ability to enjoy life during your retire-ment years.

Here are a few sugges-tions to help you achieve this “balancing act”:

Expect market volatility — and don’t overreact.

If you’ve been investing for a while, you know that volatil-ity in the financial markets is normal. In fact, it’s not unusual for the market to drop 10%, or even more, in a year. Try not to overreact to this type of volatil-ity. For example, don’t imme-diately sell investments just be-cause they’ve had a down year — they may well bounce back the next year, especially if their fundamentals are still strong.

Diversify. It’s always a good idea to

diversify across a range of in-vestment vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. While diversifica-tion can’t guarantee a profit or

protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

Maintain a cash cushion. During your retirement

years, you may face unexpected expenses, just as you did when you were working. To help pay for these expenses without being forced to dip into your long-term investments, try to maintain a “cash cushion” that’s sufficient to cover six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses.

Limit withdrawals from your investments.

To keep your investment portfolio intact for as long as possible, set limits on your annual withdrawals. Your with-drawal rate should be based on a variety of factors — age at retire-ment, other sources of income,

lifestyle choices, etc. A financial advisor can help you calculate a withdrawal rate that makes sense for your situation.

Delay your generosity. It can be tempting to pro-

vide for your grandchildren — and perhaps even your grown children — as soon as you can. But you need to balance this impulse with the financial chal-

lenges that two or three decades of retirement can bring. It’s not being “selfish” to take care of yourself first — in fact, by doing everything possible to remain financially independent, you will be help-ing your family in the long run.

PORTSMOUTH – The City of Portsmouth

is pleased to announce that the Downtown Portsmouth Park-ing Shuttle will continue to run Thursday to Sunday until No-vember 2, 2014. The City has been operating the Downtown Portsmouth Parking Shuttle on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays since May and, in August, ex-panded the shuttle operations to include Thursdays. The shuttle circulates between the Connect Community Church (C3) park-ing lot on Market Street near Exit 7 on Route 95 and the Ha-nover Parking Garage on Ha-nover Street.

For September and Oc-Don’t delay creating your estate plan.

If you are committed to leaving a generous legacy for your grandchildren, you need a comprehensive estate plan. And it’s best to create this plan as soon as possible, while you are mentally and physically healthy. You may never become incapac-itated, of course, but the future is not ours to see. In addition to starting early with your estate plan, you’ll need to assemble the right team, including your financial advisor, legal profes-

sional and tax expert. You might enjoy receiving

attention on National Grand-parents Day. But you’ll get even greater pleasure out of knowing that you’re maximizing your ef-forts to leave the type of legacy you want for your grandchildren — while still enjoying the retire-ment lifestyle you desire.

tober, the Parking Shuttle will continue to operate on the cur-rent schedule – Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 1:30 a.m., and Sundays from noon to 10 p.m. The shuttle loops every 10 minutes and parking is free at the C3 Lot.

According to Mark Nelson, Division Director of Parking & Transportation, the extension of service through the fall was appropriate based on the grow-ing interest in the shuttle and public feedback. “So far, we have received positive feedback from the riders as well as from employees, downtown patrons, business owners and the general
