DOVER -The Dover Planning Board

and the Planning Department are working with a group of vol-unteers to update the Land Use Chapter of the Dover Master Plan. The Land Use chapter, which was prepared in 2007, is being updated. As part of the pro-cess, the Planning Board created a Steering Committee in March to oversee the work and to ensure there is ample opportunity for public participation during the process.

The Steering Committee, chaired by former City Coun-

cilor Jerry Reese, has been meet-ing monthly and working closely with the Planning Department and the planning consultant hired by the City: Jeffrey H. Taylor & Associates. The process is sched-uled to take approximately six months. All the steering com-mittee meetings are open to the public. Maps being prepared as part of the update are available on the City website at www.dover.nh.gov.

“This is an important update to the City’s Master Plan,” Reese said. “I am pleased that two members of the committee were

DOVER -Sampson

Sampson is just 4 years old and came to the shelter because his owners could not afford to care for his allergies. This sweet little dog is playful and affection-ate. He is looking for a medium energy home with someone who is willing to keep him on a special diet to help his allergies. Sampson is very protective of his food, so must go to a home with older children (13+). Because he is reactive towards people with his food, he might also be reac-

members of the last update, seven years ago. That gives the commit-tee some continuity and allows us to focus on the future and not keep asking the question of how we got to where we are now. In the three meetings held so far, the members of the committee have been engaged and asking many questions of the planning staff and the City’s consultant. That, I believe, will lead to a finished product which will be useful for all stakeholders in the future.”

The Master Plan, which is a blueprint for the City’s future development and acts as both a reference and policy document, is

updated every five to 10 years by the Planning Board. The Master Plan is designed to help a com-munity meet change responsibly, guiding its growth in an orderly manner.

The City began the Master Plan update process in 2012 with the development of its Visioning Chapter. This process, branded Dover 2023, set in motion the process of creating a Master Plan outlining how the community wants to look and feel when it cel-ebrates its 400th anniversary. As part of the Vision chapter work, a time-line for completing six chap-ters in the overall Master Plan

was completed. In 2014, staff de-veloped a Data Appendix which will be used by all future chapters in the cycle.

In addition to the Land Use chapter, the City will work on the following chapters over the next five years: Transportation, Stew-ardship of Community Resourc-es, Recreation, and Regional Concerns.

To view the City’s adopted Master Plan, visit www.dover.nh.gov. For more information or to get involved with the project, contact City Planner Steve Bird at 603-516-6008 or [email protected].

PORTSMOUTH -A benefit concert will take

place Friday, July 18, at 8 p.m. at the historic North Church, 2 Congress Street. All proceeds will go to the Con Tutti Chorus Humanitarian Tour in Puerto Rico in 2015.

Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “sure-fingered guitar virtuo-so,” Randy Armstrong is the co-founder of Do’a World Music En-semble and Unu Mondo. With a collection of over two hundred instruments from around the world, including acoustic, syn-thesizer and nylon-string guitars, sitar, balofon, djembe, koto, cha-rango, mbira and a wide variety of percussion and stringed instru-ments, he has amazed audiences throughout the United States,

Canada, Alaska, and India. As a composer and per-

forming artist with Do’a World Music Ensemble, his music has been acclaimed as “a marvelous kaleidoscope of shifting melo-dies, rhythms, and instrumental colors” by Downbeat magazine. CD Review stated, “guitarist Randy Armstrong… has com-posed some of the brightest con-temporary instrumentals this side of the hemisphere.” Randy Armstrong has performed, re-corded and appeared on over 35 albums and film scores. For more information and to sample his music, visit www.randyarm-strong.com

Armstrong will be joined by accomplished local musi-cian Cynthia Chatis. Her ethe-

real flute playing and vocals with shruti box drone “fill the rafters with their intensity of powerful sound, great presence and spiri-tual depth.” She has played with many local entertainers, appear-ing regularly at Jazzmouth, The Press Room, Ri Ra and other establishments. She has con-tributed to several recordings, including a solo album ‘Wind,’ featuring original instrumental compilations for yoga and medi-tation.

Tickets and minimum do-nation of $15 are available at the door or in advance at Riverrun Bookstore on 142 Fleet Street in downtown Portsmouth, on brownpapertickets.com. For more information, please email [email protected].

RYE –The Seacoast Science

Center’s outdoor concert series brings some of New England’s favorite bands to the seacoast this summer for its 19th season. Sponsored by the Atlantic Grill, Music-by-the-Sea is the Center’s signature fundraising event.

Owners and Rye residents, Michael and Peter Labrie, who also own the popular Ports-mouth waterfront restaurant, River House, are known for their generous support of the arts. Ac-cording to Michael Labrie, “We support Seacoast Science Cen-ter’s ocean education mission and its new Marine Mammal Rescue program. We are hon-ored to underwrite the Center’s Music-by-the-Sea concert series in anticipation of the opening of our newest restaurant venture, the Atlantic Grill.”

On July 17, the premier U2 tribute band, Joshua Tree takes the stage at the Atlantic Grill. Joshua Tree awes the crowd with their remarkable reproduction

of the world’s most popular rock band.

Be sure to arrive early on July 24 when Entrain rocks the shore. Entrain has proven to be a favorite of Music-by-the-Sea fans and has brought sell-out crowds. The band is praised for its ability to shift effortlessly between mu-sical styles—from rock, blues, calypso and ska, to zydeco, jazz and funk—all based around drums and an infectious rhythm.

One of the most fun-lov-ing, local party bands is back on August 31; Jumbo Circus Pea-nuts. The big bands’ swinging-pop-jazz, crazy costumes and tossed-into-the-crowd beaded necklaces keep the crowd on their feet all evening.

This year, you can enjoy a fifth concert, when Drowned Valley takes the stage on August 7. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Center’s Marine Mammal Rescue program, thanks to the generosity of the UNH Marine Docents. You’ll not only enjoy great foot-stomp-

PORTSMOUTH -Join the two-time People’s

Choice Spotlight Award winning Shakespeare in Prescott Park as it returns for its fourth season with ‘The Comedy Of Errors’. Pro-duced by Prescott Park Arts Festi-val and presented by Seven Stages Shakespeare Company (7SSC), ‘The Comedy Of Errors’ will run for five Sunday afternoon perfor-mances, July 13 through August 17, in Prescott Park. This produc-tion is a benefit for Prescott Park Arts Festival, and is sponsored by DTC Lawyers: Donahue, Tucker & Ciandella, PLLC, and Ports-mouth Gas Light Company.

One of Shakespeare’s ear-lier comedies, director Kevin Condardo says ‘The Comedy Of Errors’ is sure to please both Shakespeare novices and aficio-nados alike. “The story is simple and easy to follow - if you’ve seen a mistaken identity farce before, chances are ‘Comedy’ was an influence,” says Condardo who is also 7SSC’s Managing Direc-tor. “Beyond that, though, there are also a lot of juicy surprises to find when you dig in to the poetry and watch a young Shakespeare learning how to write.”

This Shakespeare in Prescott Park production tells the story of two sets of twins sepa-rated at birth who turn a secluded bayou town on its head for the strangest afternoon on record as they unwittingly cross paths in Shakespeare’s boisterous farce. The visiting twins from hated Syracuse find themselves greeted by strangers and given unsolic-ited gifts, the hometown twins

The cast includes: Dan Beaulieu; Meredith Caple; Scott Caple; Tara Jean Conway; G. Matthew Gaskell; Rich Harris; Bill Humphreys; Sara LaFlamme; CJ Lewis; Megan O’Connor; Ryan Salvato; Chris-topher Savage; James Sears; Nate Speckman; and Matthew Von Richards.

’The Comedy Of Errors’ in Prescott Park plays on Sunday, July 13; Sunday, July 20; Sunday, August 3; Sunday, August 10; and Sunday, August 17. All shows at 3 p.m. For more information visit www.7stagesshakespeare.org.

There is a suggested $20 at-the-door donation for each concert for those attendees who do not wish to subscribe to the Athenaeum series.

“In the past two years, the response to Historic Ports-mouth Chamber Music has been simply overwhelming,” noted Bill Wieting, Chairman of the Portsmouth Athenaeum Performance Committee. “We are excited again to be pairing captivating music and gifted performers with uniquely his-toric properties in the greater Portsmouth area.”

Women Should Know What to Expect from Social Security

Everyone needs to be aware of the financial resources they will have available in retire-ment. But if you’re a woman, you must be particularly dili-gent, for a variety of reasons. And that means you’ll need to know just what to expect from Social Security.

Why should you, as a woman, pay extra attention to Social Security? For one thing, women often take time off from their careers to care for children and older par-ents, so they may accumulate less money in employer-spon-sored retirement accounts, such as 401(k) plans. And women still live several years

longer than men, according to the Census Bureau.

Clearly, then, you need to get the most you can from Social Security. To do so, you will need to consider at least three key factors:

AgeYou can start taking re-

tirement benefits as early as 62, but your benefits may be re-duced by up to 30% unless you wait until your “full retirement age,” which is likely 66 or 67. If you delay taking benefits until 70, your monthly benefits may be up to a third larger than if you started collecting Social Security at your full retire-ment age. You’ll need to weigh

a variety of factors — such as family longevity, income from employer-sponsored retirement plans and your anticipated financial needs — in deter-mining when you should start taking Social Security.

EmploymentIf you work while receiv-

ing Social Security benefits before you reach full retire-ment age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn over an annual limit, which generally increases each year. In the year you reach full retirement age, your ben-efits will be reduced by $1 for every $3 you earn over the limit before your birthday. But once you reach full retirement age, your benefits will no longer be adjusted for earned income.

Marital StatusAs a spouse, you can gen-

erally receive Social Security payments based on your own earnings record or collect a spousal benefit of up to 50% of your husband’s Social Se-curity benefit. The benefit will

be reduced if you start taking it before your full retirement age. To start collecting Social Secu-rity spousal benefits, you must be at least 62 years old and your husband must also have filed for his own benefits. If you’re divorced, and you’re not cur-rently married, you can gener-ally receive benefits on your ex-husband’s Social Security record, as long as you meet cer-tain conditions. (For example, you had to have been married to your ex-husband for at least 10 years.)

No matter how much Social Security you ultimately receive, it’s almost certainly not going to be enough to pro-vide all the income you’ll need. So during your working years, try to contribute as much as you can, for as long as you can, to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At the same time, look for other investment opportunities. And when you reach retirement, create a with-drawal strategy that allows you to stretch out the income you

receive from your invest-ments for as long as you can.

By saving and investing as much as possible during your working years, maxi-mizing your Social Security payments and carefully man-aging your financial assets when you’re retired, you can help improve your chances of enjoying the retirement life-style you deserve.

This information is believed to be reliable, but investors should rely on in-formation from the Social Se-curity Administration before making a decision on when to take Social Security benefits. It is general information and not meant to cover all sce-narios. Your situation may be different, so be sure to dis-cuss this with the Social Se-curity Administration prior to taking benefits.

STRAFFORD –Are you a gardener with

interest, experience and knowl-edge of any type of gardening? UNH Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who share their en-thusiasm for gardening with the general public. By serving as volunteer educators in their communities, Master Gardeners help reach more people through community projects.

Strafford County Master Gardeners have organized and assist in: The ‘Kids Can Grow’ program that gives children the materials and information to grow their own gardens; The Joe B. Parks Riverwalk in Dover; The Rochester River Walks; Bedrock Gardens in Lee; River-side Nursing Home; other Com-munity gardens and school gar-dening projects under the direc-tion of Master Gardeners.

DOVER -For six weeks this summer,

kids can jump into the roles of architects and builders using tens of thousands of K’NEX con-struction pieces at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire. Colossal Construction 2, a sum-mer-only exhibit open through August 15, featuring amazing ball run structures created by the museum staff, and plenty of opportunities for families to add to the structures or create their own.

Three years ago, the Chil-dren’s Museum was offered a truckload of K’NEX pieces from a grandfather who was disman-tling the elaborate train tracks

and structures he had built in his basement. A team of museum staff members spent hours taking sections apart and loading them into a truck to take back to Dover. Some sections were on display during the summer of 2011 but have been in storage since then.

Since April, museum staff members have been taking apart the original structures and re-building large sections for the summer exhibit, which is being installed in the Muse Studio space. Kids can take ping-pong balls and drop them in to see the circuitous paths they travel from top to bottom. Families can also build new sections onto the ball runs or use K’NEX pieces

and informative programs and projects presented by the UNH Cooperative Extension and Master Gardeners.

UNH Cooperative Ex-tension invites you to apply to the Fall 2014 Master Gardener Class. Classes are on Tuesdays,

to invent their own creations. Photos will be taken throughout the 6-week exhibition to record the many different approaches children take to building.

There is no extra charge for this special summer exhibit – all activities are included in the museum’s regular price of ad-mission ($9 adults/children, $8

seniors, no charge for children under 12 months old). During the summer, the museum is open 7 days a week.

The not-for-profit Chil-dren’s Museum of New Hamp-shire is located at 6 Washington Street in Dover. For more infor-mation, call 603-742-2002 or visit www.childrens-museum.org.

The Children’s Museum of NH is opening a temporary summer exhibit, Colossal Construction 2, in its Studio space where kids and families can build with tens of thousands of K’NEX construction pieces.

Dear Computer Lady,I was saving photos on a

USB drive that needed to be in order. They remained in order as long as I was dragging and drop-ping from another folder. Then I found a photo I wanted to add and instead of saving to the file I was dragging from I saved di-rectly to the USB drive. At that point all the photos where no longer in order. Is it because I saved directly to the USB drive? Or does the PC actually just randomly change the way you had been saving the files for no reason? Please if you can answer this it would be greatly appreci-ated. Cynthia

Dear Cynthia,When you save photos on

a drive, they are not really saved in any particular order. Instead, they are saved in the first avail-

able empty space on the device, sometimes, one file can be saved across several locations. When you are looking at your files on the USB drive, the order they are displayed in is determined by the way they are sorted, usu-ally by file name, but you can change the way they are sorted depending on what your needs are. When you are looking at your files, you can sort them by file name, file size, date, or any tags you might have given them.

Since you want your files in a specific order, the easiest way to line them up, is to change the file name. If you have less than 100 photos, name the first one 01myphoto, then the second one 02myphoto and so on. The my photo part of the file name can be whatever you want it to be as long as the numbers at the begin-

ning of the file name are in the correct order. If you have more than 100 photos to organize, just start with two zeros in front of the file name. 001, 002, etc. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,This problem seems to

happen randomly, but always after using the computer for at least an hour or more. Suddenly, the program I’m using locks up. When I try to close it, nothing happens. When I click on an-other open tab, it opens with a completely black screen, but still showing the tool bars. I’ve tried closing all programs using task manager, but when I try to open a program, I again get the black screen. The only way to get rid of it is to restart the computer. I’ve checked Google for a solution but nothing I’ve found works. This began about a month ago. My computer is only a year old Lenovo desktop. Can you help? Carole

Dear Carole,I can’t tell you exactly what

is wrong with your computer without taking a look at it and running some diagnostics. First, I would look for a hardware problem. Is the computer over-heating? You can run a program like speccy at: http://www.piri-form.com/speccy to check the temperature of different compo-

nents in the computer. I would also run a check on your RAM for errors, and your hard drive. I would also check your video card, make sure you have up to date drivers, and that it is not overheating.

If all your hardware is fine, then it is time to start looking at the software. If this prob-lem only happens when you are using Internet Explorer, try using Chrome or Firefox in-stead and see what happens. If you experience this problem no matter what program you are in, a clean install of Windows might be needed. Make sure you back up your files first! If you are not comfortable running these tests on your computer, your local computer shop should be able to do it for you. If you live in the area, give me a call, I would be happy to help. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have a Windows 7 home

premium laptop and I gave it a check to see if it’s compatible with Windows 8 and it is. I have a Windows 8 desktop as well. Can I burn on a DVD the win-dows 8 and use it on my laptop to upgrade so I don’t have to spend over $100 on a Windows 8 DVD? Lisa

Dear Lisa,No, you can’t. This won’t

work for two reasons. You can’t

take the files that are on your Windows 8 computer, transfer them to the old computer and be instantly running Windows 8. That is not the way things work. You would need to install Win-dows 8 from a Windows 8 DVD, or a download from Microsoft. The second reason is that this is not legal. Like it or not, Win-dows 8 is over $100, and pirating a copy from another computer is stealing plain and simple. Windows 7 is a great operating system, and unless you have a specific reason for upgrading to Windows 8, I would save my money and continue to run Win-dows 7 on the laptop. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I was looking at your re-

sponse to shut down windows 8 computer. Just hit the power button on the computer and shut it down. It is the easiest way I find on laptops. Not sure if it is OK to use on tabletops. Has not hurt my laptop at all. Albert

Dear Albert,Pressing the power button

is an acceptable way to shut down your computer, you just need to be aware of a couple of things.

Always press and release the power button to start the shutdown process. If you hold the power button for 4 or more

Turning your computer off with the power button might not be actually shutting it down, but instead putting it to sleep. Since you need to shut down your com-puter once a day to keep it run-ning smoothly, you will need to make sure that is what pressing the power button is set up to do. You can access these settings in the Control Panel under Power Options. Make sure it says, “Shut Down” next to, “When I press the power button” and click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window. Elizabeth
