Background Information IMO: 2020 Sulfur Cap The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that starting in 2020, ships must reduce sulfur emissions from 3.5% to 0.5%. This is a drastic 85% reduction. In order to comply with this new rule, commercial ship owners around the world must change their fuel consumption practice by three options as below: 1. Low Sulfur Fuel with a sulfur content <0.5% (LSF), 2. Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) with a scrubber, 3. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
