Dan Beaudin is a big, imposing dude, and one imagines it was easy for Griz defensive back Brandon Dwyer to take one look at the 6-foot-5 Noxon product and decide “Chief” was a good handle.

But given the aloofness of the “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” character for which Beaudin was named, we submit: That summer day in the Griz weight room, when Dwyer met the freshman-to-be? Probably one of Beaudin’s quieter moments.

“There was no rhyme or reason,” Beaudin insists, five years later. “But it stuck. Probably half the team doesn’t know my real name.”

It’s a better bet they do, given his ability to catch the ball or lay a block on behalf of Chase Reynolds, Thomas Brooks-Fletcher or – we’re thinking of the Cal Poly game here – Marc Mariani. The fact is, he’s a good teammate who works hard.

“Obviously it’s a lot of fun to be around the group of guys we have,” he said of the Griz, who are 7-0 heading into Saturday’s showdown with Weber State. “There’s a lot of good guys and good leadership on our team. To be around them is a privilege.”

“He’s a team leader in terms of the spiritual aspect of our football team,” Griz coach Bobby Hauck notes. “He’s a great guy to have on our team, not just for his catches or his awesome plays, but for who he is.

“And he’s come a long way from Noxon, Mont., to now.”

That Dan Beaudin is a Griz is pretty remarkable, given that his three brothers all joined the armed forces out of high school. Then again, if you play football at UM you’d better get used to a regimented lifestyle.

Beaudin has, even if it’s not in the Marines, where his brother Caleb served, or the Air Force (Jeremiah) or Navy (Nate).

“I decided I wanted a different uniform,” said Dan, and he wears it well. Number 87 has eight catches this season for 121 yards; he has 40 catches for 457 yards in his career. He started 11 of the Grizzlies’ 14 games his freshman year and half their 12 games in 2007. Last year was injury marred; he missed three games.

Now he’s back at full strength, trying to balance married life – he and Reynolds are the only married Griz – with a tough curriculum and game preparation.

“I just finished a 17-page research paper,” he said Wednesday, referring to an upper-division History assignment. “That was miserable.

“This semester has been pretty hard. I’m in 13 credits, and it’s by far the hardest. I come home, eat dinner and do homework.”

Then he gets up the next day and does it again. The high point, apart from seeing his wife Danielle of course, is practice.

“You have everything else that has put stress in your life,” he said. “But you get out on the football field, and all you’re thinking about is the next

Dan Beaudin’s speed and power are summed up by a 61-yard reception to set up the go-ahead touchdown at UC Davis, and a block that took out to defenders during Marc Mariani’s 84-yard touchdown against Cal Poly.

play.” Playing football wasn’t on

Beaudin’s mind in March of 2004. All he was thinking about was hoops, after helping the Noxon Red Devils into the State C boys’ basketball tournament in Billings.

“Somebody saw me play there and was friends with Coach Hauck, and said he needed to recruit me,” is how Beaudin, who was then a junior in high school, remembers it. “He called me the spring after my junior year and invited me down to football camp.”

The camp was as memorable overall as it was forgettable in spots. Beaudin played quarterback for Noxon’s 8-man football team – he nearly transferred to Sandpoint, Idaho, where he would’ve played alongside Griz safety Erik Stoll – and lined up behind center at the camp, briefly.

“He tried to put me at quarterback for about one series,” Beaudin said. “Then it was, ‘(Ty) Palmer, you’re up.’ ”

Beaudin ended up playing tight end and defensive end. He was catching passes, and making hay on defense. “There was a series where I had two knockdown passes and two sacks,” he recalled. “I did really well.

“After that Coach Hauck came up and talked to (Beaudin and Shann Schillinger), and said they’d be watching us.

“I was banking on having school paid for. I needed to have a scholarship. They worked it out.”

All of this happened despite Beaudin having little idea of what Griz football was about in March.

“I didn’t know a single thing about them, to be honest with you,” he said. “Kind of sad to say. You see all these guys who got raised on it. A lot of it maybe had to do with me kind of being one of the first people in my family who had an opportunity to go to college.”

That fall he saw almost every Griz home game. It didn’t take many trips into Washington-Grizzly Stadium before he was up to speed.

Of course there were other pursuits

along the way. A standout thrower in high school track and field, Beaudin worked in a couple of UM’s meets around spring ball in 2008, and ended up qualifying for the Big Sky Championships in Sacramento, Calif. There, he finished second.

“Last spring I kind of choked,” he added. “It’s just hard to be consistent. But that year I went to Sac, I kind of got lucky. My form worked and I popped one.”

That was actually his third sport at Montana. A couple months earlier, with injuries mounting on the Griz basketball team, Wayne Tinkle searched around the football offices for a banger. He found Beaudin.

“I’d been playing a little bit with Jack (McGillis, who was a transfer redshirt) in the Rec,” said Beaudin, an all-state player at Noxon. “I don’t know if he mentioned anything or not. But I think the coaches said I was probably the best bet.”

He joined the team for the last six games. He played in two. He scored one point.

“I blocked one shot, I think, and I had a free throw,” he said. “Kind of my job was to get guys motivated, and be a force in practice and give them somebody to go against down low.”

Then he laughed.

“I don’t think I got a shot up without getting it blocked the first couple weeks of practice,” he added. “I don’t think people realize what a different world it is.”

The other surprise was down time. The Griz lost a hoops game at Weber on a Wednesday, and stayed there before heading to Idaho State for another game – on Sunday.

“In football, it’s straight to the point,” he said. “We fly in, we meet, we eat, bed check at 10 o’clock, we get up, we eat, we meet, we play the game and fly back out.

“What do you do in Ogden, Utah, for three days? I got a haircut.”

He isn’t sorry he joined up, though the timing of the Sac State game caused problems.

“Me and the wife were going to go out for dinner,” Beaudin said. “It was Valentine’s Day, and we had big plans. I remember we had to cancel because we had a basketball game.”

Another pursuit began much earlier.

When Beaudin was a freshman at UM, he visited a high school friend who had been in the same youth group. She had a roommate. That her name was Danielle – “What would you think her name is?” asked Beaudin – was one oddity.

That she was born exactly one year earlier is another (Oct. 28, which was Wednesday. They went out to dinner). That her dad was also born on Oct. 28 makes it a little more odd, and when you add in a sister-in-law who’s married to a Daniel Andrew, Beaudin’s first two names, it starts to get a little Syfy Channel.

“I’m actually ‘Little Dan’ in the whole scheme of things,” Beaudin said. “The sister-in-law’s husband is a big fella.”

Coming from a 250-pounder, that’s saying something. And Beaudin, part of a talented tight end group along with Rob Overton and Stephen Pfahler, figures to be on to bigger things, one way or another.

“I definitely have the ambition to make it to the next level,” said Beaudin, who had a TD in each of his first three seasons at UM. “The question in my mind, and other people’s, is whether I can remain healthy for an entire season.”

So far, so good. It’s way better than a year ago, when a 45-28 regular-season loss at Weber State was made worse by a broken thumb and a heavy rain.

“Worst conditions I’ve ever played in,” he said. “I was frozen by the end of warmups. That’s no excuse, but it was one of the worst experiences of my life. And then we had to drive a bus home.”

The football field was supposed to be a refuge, and it usually is – that’s the lone Big Sky loss Beaudin and the other seniors have suffered at UM. That he was hurt dampened the fun.

“I enjoy being on the field,” Beaudin says. “Last year was difficult, and it’s definitely a lot more fun in that sense. Then you wake up and you’re actually eight weeks into the season.”

The Griz avenged that Weber loss in the playoffs, winning 24-13. Beaudin figures to draw on that when the Wildcats come in again Saturday.

“We all kind of have that same mindset,” he said. “Put an entire game together and play like the Montana Grizzlies play – ferocious, and with speed, and we don’t give up until after the whistle has blown.”

VISIT US IN THE BITTERROOT!

By NICK LOCKRIDGEof the Missoulian

Boo.No, I’m not trying to scare you. That

would be too (candy) corny for even the readers of this Halloween edition of the picks column. I am, however, booing certain groups and people, starting with myself for picking Weber State this week.

That’s right, I’m picking the purple people eaters to knock off mighty Montana. I know it’s not a popular position to take in Grizzlyville, but I figure one of us prognosticators has to pick against UM once a year, and it might as well be me. This is no trick, though, the Wildcats could treat the Griz to a second straight league loss.

If I’m wrong, and my Halloween disguise fails me, Grizzly fans may give me my own El Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) march down Higgins, pitch forks and PBRs in hand.

Boo No. 2 goes to the MSU Bobcats (hopefully putting me in good graces with Griz fans after Boo No. 1). The Bobcats lost last week at Eastern Washington, carving my two-game lead in the picks standings down to just one.

My final Boo of the week goes to Fritz Neighbor for poking fun of my pre-Halloween mullet. Didn’t you learn anything from the movie Joe Dirt? The bully, aka Kid Rock, gets punked in the end. Enjoy your French Cries, Fritz.

Boo-hoo.

As you can see it’s pretty much dead even between these two Big Sky “powers,” but still one thing keeps popping to mind: The Wildcats haven’t won in Missoula since 1987. I was 7 years old that year and it was the first time my mom let me go trick-or-treating by myself ... around the neighborhood that is. This is still the Grizzlies’ ’hood.

This game features two of the top three punt returners in the nation. Mariani brings a ridiculous average (27.4 yards per punt) to the argument, while Tim Toone has the second most return yards (284) in FCS play. Both have returns for TDs too.

A dinged-up Grizzly secondary will have its hands full Saturday. The Wildcats boast cornerback Thyrell Lewis, the reigning Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week.

The teams’ top tackling threats are exactly who they should be, the middle linebackers: Taylor Sedillo of Weber and Shawn Lebsock of Montana.

WSU is second in the Big Sky in sacks, led by senior Kevin Linehan’s six takedowns. UM totals eight sacks through seven games.

It’s a toss-up here as well. Grizzly great Marc Mariani should be on the short list of Payton Award candidates, but he’s not (don’t ask, it’s an East Coast thing). Unfortunately Weber’s Tim Toone has the same gripe. Easily two of the top receivers in the FCS.

Trevyn Smith is one of the best backs to ever set foot in Ogden. He’s also one of the best backs to set foot in Cheney, Bozeman, Pocatello and any other Big Sky Conference town he plays. But in Missoula, there’s Chase Reynolds, who’s coming off his fifth career three-TD day.

The High Flyin’ Hawaiian, a.k.a. Cameron Higgins, has been impressive in his three previous starts against Montana, even though the Weber State quarterback is 0-2 in games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. In my experience you go with experience in big games such as this.

It seems the aforementioned Higgins has been subjected to a little more pressure this season than the Grizzly quarterbacks. Higgins, the reigning league MVP, has thrown 11 interceptions, while UM’s two-headed QB has thrown just four INTs.

Sophomore cornerback enjoys first start as GrizBy SCOTT JOHNSON

for the Missoulian

Montana football fans likely became aware of cornerback Donny Lisowski for the first time last Saturday. It’s also probably a fair bet Sacramento State is fully aware of the sophomore after he notched a team-high seven tackles and broke up two passes in the Grizzlies’ 45-30 victory.

Lisowski, who registered 13 tackles and a fumble recovery as a true freshman in 2008, made his first career start at cornerback against the Hornets after primarily seeing action on special teams. His performance Saturday gave him 13 tackles this season as well.

A versatile athlete, Lisowski also lettered in wrestling and track and field at Seattle’s O’Dea High School. He said the small, all-boys Catholic environment was a positive influence on his development on and off the field.

“I liked it a lot,” he said. “It was a huge brotherhood. There was never any drama. You become close to your friends. Instead of hanging out with girls after school, we were training. That’s why we’re so good in basketball and football.”

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder wasn’t a part of the basketball team that won three straight state titles, but did lead the football team to a 13-1 record and a place in the state championship game as a senior.

Q: Last Saturday’s game at Sacramento State was your first start at cornerback. How did that feel?

A: It felt real good. I finally had some pressure on me. It felt good that they had some trust in me. It felt good to make some plays for the team.

Q: What’s your biggest asset on the football field?

A: Speed.Q: How fast are you?A: I ran a 4.47 40(-yard dash). Q: What weather conditions

would you least prefer to play football in?

A: It doesn’t really matter to me to because I play defense. It’s going to hurt worse when it’s cold and you’re the one getting hit. Of course last year during the playoffs, I didn’t really like playing in that. Icicles were forming on your mouth guard.

Q: This week’s opponent is Weber State. What’s the most cliché-ridden answer you can give me about the Grizzlies’ preparation for facing the Wildcats?

A: We’ve got to run the ball and stop the run. Trevyn Smith is a real good running back.

Q: You also see playing time on punt coverage. What does it take to be successful on special teams?

A: You have to know your assignment. You definitely have to know what to do. There are a lot of things that could mess you

up. You have to study film.Q: Weber State wide receiver

Tim Toone is averaging nearly seven receptions per game. What will be key for the UM secondary to keep him in check?

A: We’ve got to win our one-on-ones. Can’t let them complete the deep balls.

Q: Are you dressing up for Halloween?

A: Yes. Not sure what I’m going to be yet.

Q: What’s your favorite costume you’ve ever had for Halloween ?

A: Hockey player. Q: Did you play hockey when

you were younger?A: Yeah, when I was real little. Q: How long did it take for you

to realize that Missoula is pretty rabid about Griz football?

A: My recruiting visit when I watched them play in a snowy game. I knew right there. Not a seat missing. If people were filling a stadium in conditions like that I knew people were crazy about Griz football.

Q: What other schools were interested in you?

A: Idaho, Washington and Air Force.

Q: Why did you choose Montana?

A: I chose Montana because when I visited, it reminded me of my high school. It has a winning tradition and a strong brotherhood. All of the guys made

me feel real welcome. It felt like high school.

Q: You also played quarterback in high school. Did anyone look at you as a quarterback?

A: No. The funny thing is most of my highlight film was of me playing quarterback. They wanted to see my athleticism.

Q: Who is the most under-appreciated player on the Griz?

A: I don’t think I have an answer for that one.

Q: Who is the hardest hitter in the secondary?

A: Can I say the corners?Q: You can say whatever you

want to say.A: I’ll say the corners to get our

safeties riled up a little. Q: Do you hear much trash talk

out on the field?A: Yeah. Definitely. Q: Is there anything you’ve

heard that made you laugh because of the sheer stupidity of what was said or something that was genuinely funny?

A: Some of the receivers will jump for a ball when it’s not even thrown their way. Sac State did that. That’s pretty funny. But yeah, there’s a lot of guys out there that will say stuff. We try not to talk back. We’ve just got to take it and beat them on the play.

Q: What is your biggest celebrity encounter?

A: Probably eating dinner with

By RALPH D. RUSSOAssociated Press

Much like politics, college football is essentially local.

Sure, Florida, Texas and Southern California will play huge rivalry games with national title implications Saturday. But more importantly, those three games will go a long way toward sorting out the conference races.

The top-ranked Gators face Georgia in Jacksonville, Fla., with a chance to clinch the Southeastern Conference’s East Division, depending on what happens with South Carolina and Tennessee.

The Bulldogs are two games behind the Gators in the standings, so even with a win they’ll need help to catch Florida. But this qualifies as the Bulldogs’ last stand when it comes to winning an SEC title.

No. 3 Texas goes to Stillwater with a half-game lead in the Big 12 South over No. 13 Oklahoma State. With the Longhorns having already beaten Oklahoma and Texas Tech, a victory over the Cowboys would give them a relatively smooth road to the conference title game.

“We don’t want, like last year, to leave it up to a tiebreaker,” Texas linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy said.

The Cowboys would take the lead in the division race with a victory, but they have plenty of heavy lifting to come with games against Texas Tech and Oklahoma in November.

No. 4 USC goes to No. 10 Oregon trailing the Ducks by a game in the Pac-10 race. The Trojans have won seven straight conference titles, but the streak would be in grave danger if they take a second Pac-10 loss.

Keeping an eye on that game will be Arizona, which is tied with the Trojans at 3-1 in the Pac-10 standings. The Wildcats still have both USC and Oregon on the schedule, so don’t let anybody try to tell you this game will settle the Pac-10 title. But it is a big one.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY / Grizzly Q&A

John Stockton. I live with Houston, his son.

Q: What stereotype about Seattle makes you roll your eyes or groan when you hear it directly from people or in the mainstream media?

A: Probably that it’s a horrible city because it rains all of the time. I love it there.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?A: I have a couple. White lightning,

D-Lo. Q: I’m thinking you could be called

The Dude because of your name. It’s similar to Lebowski and there was a character in “The Big Lebowski” named Donny. Any thoughts on being nicknamed The Dude?

A: Yeah, The Dude is what my high school coaches called me sometimes. Some people also called me The Donald. For Donald Trump.

Q: Does anyone ever say to you, “You’re out of your element Donny?”

A: Yep (laughs). That was my history teacher every day.

Q: What movie have you seen so often you could quote the most lines?

A: “Remember the Titans.” Q: What’s your prediction for the

World Series? For the record, you’re making this prediction before Game 1.

A: I really don’t care. I don’t watch baseball.

Q: What’s your favorite TV show?A: ESPN or “Family Guy.” Q: What do you like to do in your free

time?A: I like to hang out with family when

they’re in town. When I’m not doing that I like to go fishing on the Clark Fork, the Rattlesnake and the Blackfoot. And lastly bowling.

Q: What’s your favorite place to grab a bite to eat in Missoula?

A: Probably Red Robin.
