This variety might range from listening to an enthusi- astic teacher explaining a concept in their subject, to making a video documentary to show to the rest of the class. Often group work is used as another means of developing skills and solving problems. Year 7 Book Look was a great success last night and it provided a really great opportunity for all parents and carers to see the fantastic work being done by our Year 7 stu-dents. Students enjoyed the trip to Shakespeare Globe on Monday, which will signifi-cantly contribute to their learning in English clas-ses. 7W‘s assembly about Pan-cake Day last Friday was a great success and virtu-ally every student contrib-uted to its success. I am looking forward to lots of Year 7 students being

Involved in the Celebration of Learning event on the evening of 3 April. Also, well done to 7 Ash for being the best attending form.

YEAR 10 Congratulations to 10 ELM for achieving the highest attendance % last week (97%). Well done to all of you, keep this up! This week has been 'Attendance Focus Week,' and tutors have been having conversations with their tutees about the importance of outstanding attendance to school and raising the profile of this. As mentioned previously, it is a school expectation that students have attendance of at least 96%. My Assembly this week surrounded the theme of 'Success in Failure.' We looked at case studies of some famous people who despite challenges in their lives and repeated setbacks, have come through and made a real success of themselves. We linked the assembly to the Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi and reminded students that you can achieve anything in life with the right mindset and hard work! Remembering our clear ethos Year 10...BE YOUR BEST. Upcoming Events: Next week is National Science and Engineering Week. 19th March: A/A* Performing Arts Trip to Richmond Theatre (Mr Robinson) 21st March: The Grey Court 'SPORT RELIEF MILE!' Do not let us down Year 10, get your kit on and compete. Lets raise plenty of money for Sport Relief. KS4 Extra Curricular Booster and Catch-Up sessions: This programme can be found in this edition of the e-bulletin as well as on the school website.

YEAR 11 Congratulations go to 11 ROWAN this week for the highest attendance rate in the year group. 97.3% was the winning total. At this key stage in the year, it is so important to be in school every single day. I would like to thank all of the students involved as well as the staff that supported and made this day possible. I attended the trip to Brooklands College and witnessed some truly amazing teamwork, bravery and enjoyment from students in 11 ASH and BEECH. We are awaiting the photos and videos of some funny moments.....not to mention some staff trying their hardest not to fall over on the Low Ropes....they will remain anonymous, for now! Year 11 will be receiving their final school reports soon. Included in the envelope will also be a letter informing Parents / Carers and students of our forthcoming Record of Achievement (ROA) celebration assembly. This will take place in the School Sportshall on FRIDAY 9TH MAY and will start at 1:30pm. Sixth Form Update

Richard Clements : Head of Sixth Form

University of Surrey September Residential As Grey Court prepares to welcome its first cohort of sixth form students in September, careful consideration has been given to crafting an induction programme that is worthy of the such an esteemed group. We aspire to be welcoming, prepare students for the challenges of academic study, impart some essential skills, tips and advice; and to forge a sense of unity, purpose and a collective identity. We have therefore decided on taking the whole of the year group away to Surrey University for a residential trip over three days and two nights in early September 2014. The programme will include team building activities, study skills workshops, a formal meal, a guest speaker (who we hope will deliver a rousing speech) and an introduction to university life. Furthermore, it will provide a chance for students and staff to debate, create and socialise in the leafy environs of one of the top 10 universities in the country according to the Guardian‘s 2013 survey. An additional requirement is that we keep the cost of such an exciting enterprise down and we are presently pursuing funding options that will meet this goal. Interestingly, the sculpture that greets visitors to the university campus is uncannily similar to our own Grey court logo – perhaps it is pointing to an exciting future partnership between two ―outstanding‖ institutions? More details about the trip will follow as the programme and costs are finalised… If you have any ideas, questions or suggestions about September‘s induction programme please feel free to contact me at: [email protected]

„Elite Sports Performance and Wellbeing‟ Event – Wednesday 5th March 2014

“Inspired and educated by top professionals and elite athletes”

A select group of students were given the opportunity to experience expert and specialist workshops on aspects of high performance sport on Wednesday 5th March at Grey Court. Around 10-12 students from each year group were given the opportunity to gain knowledge and information on elite aspects of sports such as Diet and nutrition, Strength and conditioning, Soft tissue injury management, Podiatry/gait analysis and Concussion/C-R-Y awareness. Grey Court were lucky enough to secure highly sought after profes-sionals to lead the workshops, with current and ex elite athletes accompanying the students as they ro-tated around the 5 workshops.

The evening began at 6.00pm with an intro-duction from Maggie Bailey and Issy Gar-rard, who gave an overview of the evening as well as how the idea came about. The idea came about after a parent/volunteer and local businesswoman joined forces with Issy Garrard and saw a vision. In just under 8 weeks, an elite sports performance event was put together with the main aim to edu-cate and inspire the young people of Grey Court as well as parents.

Half way through the event and hav-ing experienced 3 workshops, stu-dents and parents were given a taste of snacks and drinks that elite athletes would potentially eat and drink before/during/after training. These were made by Grey Court‘s Food club students. After the stu-dents and parents had experienced the 5 workshops, the raffle was drawn where there were top prizes to win, and then Dave Lucas, the school‘s athletics coach, gave a summary of the evening.

The year 10 computing trip to Disney Land (Saturday to Tuesday) was fantastic and a great learning experience for the students. The students very much enjoyed Disney Land and were a credit to the school, being extremely well behaved and engaged throughout the trip. The conference itself was very inspirational, to both staff and students, focusing on technology, in particular mobile applications ('apps') and the importance of 'computing' in today's world as opposed to ICT. We have obtained some brilliant resources which I will be implementing into our curriculum. I have no doubt that the entire experience will be of great benefit to our students, and in fact I have already witnessed one of the students, staying back after school this week, working on his own app, which is fantastic.

Celebration of Learning Thursday 3 April 2014

“What did you do at school today?”

Grey Court School is happy to launch its first celebration of learning event on Thurs-day 3rd April. The intention of this event is to showcase and celebrate the outstanding learning that our students are engaged in on a daily basis around the school; with a particular focus on learning in years 7 &. 8. It will be a lively and vibrant occasion allowing students to talk about what they have achieved at school alongside demonstrations, music, read-ings and drama. Our guest speaker will also talk to both parents and students on why learning matters and how to motivate students at home. We see this event as a key component of our teaching and learning programme this academic year. Although there is no need to purchase a ticket for this event it is important that we have a clear sense of the number of parents who we can expect to attend. I am therefore re-questing that if you would like to come to our celebration of learning event please could you email the school at [email protected] or telephone Tammy McNicol on 0208 948 1173 extn. 615. Many year 7 & 8 students will participate in the event and parents of those involved will also be notified through further communication in coming weeks. The evening, on Thursday April 3

rd, will begin at 6.30pm and is expected to last for ap-

proximately one and a half hours. I do hope you can come along to enjoy or first Cele-bration of Learning evening.

Year 7 Girls Netball Report Grey Court 2 : Waldegrave 18 After a really promising and successful Year 7 Girls Borough Tournament at Waldegrave last week, just losing in the quarterfinals, Grey Court‘s year 7 netball team were in high spirits for their 4

th game of the

league. Knowing they would be up against the best opposition in the Borough, the girls fought hard throughout the game, even though the score line wouldn‘t reflect it. Waldegrave started strongly and within 2 minutes they were 2-0 up. After a nasty fall, Olivia (playing WA) unfortunately couldn‘t continue which disrupted a bit of rhythm that the girls had started to find. At half time, the score was 7-1 to Waldegrave with Edie scoring a lovely net towards the end of the first half. Grey Court made a few changes at half time with Sian coming on as WA, Lucy as GK and Becca as C. Waldegrave stepped it up another gear and soon they started to dominate scoring another 11 nets to make the final score 18-2 to them. Nevertheless, Grey Court should feel proud of themselves, and should look forward to playing Teddington next week as it the game will be much closer. Congratulations to Francesca who deservedly won Grey Court‘s ‗man of the match‘.

Year 8 Netball Grey Court 15 : Waldegrave 7 (H) Grey Court took on their toughest opponents of the competition, Waldgrave. Last year Grey Court and Waldegrave were extremely well matched and we narrowly missed out on becoming Borough champi-ons. A super start for Grey Court and we looked like we had learnt from our mistakes. Grey Court con-trolled the pace of the game and were quick to take the lead. However, Waldegrave were far from being a walkover. An excellent, well matched first half and this was proving to be an intense game. Grey Court were faced with the blow of Anna Ferris-Simpson not being available for the match and an injury for Grace Flint. This proved costly in the second half, as Waldegrave began to build momentum we were unable to keep up. An excellent effort by the girls but a disappointing end result, with Waldegrave winning 15-7. On Thursday Grey Court will have the opportunity for a re-match in the Borough competition and I have no doubt that we will be better repaired and ready to show them what we can really do. Good work girls.

Grey Court v All the year 8 teams in the borough On Thursday 13

th of March, Grey Court girls Year 8 netball team set out to try and be borough champi-

ons. Held at Waldegrave, the tournament consisted of many great netball players. Everyone was split into an A and B team, who were split into two main groups. Grey Court B was put in the same draw as Waldegrave A, our main contenders for the title, whereas Grey Court B were put in the opposite draw. Team 1: Anna Ferris-Simpson Ruby Harbour Roisin Hanlon Jessica Knott Nicky Phillips Hannah Crendfelt Eddie Morrissey Holly Marshall During the afternoon Ruby Hayes and Ruby Harbour were fantastic in Goal Keep with Anna Ferris Simp-son and Roisin Hanlon playing as the A team defenders and Emmeline Strange stuck on her player whilst playing Wing Defence. Eddi Morrissey, Hannah Crendfelt and Holly Marshall were fantastic shoot-ers as they repeatedly scored for the A team, whilst Eli Riley-Guiu scored an amazing shot in one of the B team‘s matched. Jess Knott made sure her team stayed with the ball by intercepting many balls that seemed too high for her to reach, Kate Ashman led her team, also as centre, by being a key passer in the B team. Amber Dowling and Siobhan Lynch also had many shots and were strong in the shooting third. Nicki Phillips did amazing passes and Gemi Sparks was always in the game. After the first set of matches, only the A team remained. They won their semi-final match, by playing superbly and all that stood between them and victory was Waldegrave. The first whistle sounded and both teams were off. Waldegrave scored the first net which was closely followed by a score from Grey Court. For many minutes, both teams stayed close together in the scores. Unfortunately, Waldegrave scored yet another net and this time they kept the lead. As Jess Knott set up to take a centre pass, the final whistle went, concluding the borough competition. Although Grey Court came second, team spirit was not lost. The only disappointing thing was- we didn‘t get a medal.

Written by Anna Ferris Simpson Team 2: Katy Ashman Amber Dowling Emmeline Strange Ruby Hayes Siobhan Lynch Eliana-Mae Riley-Guiu Jemi Sparks The Year 8 netball B team consisted of Jemi, Eddi, Ellie, Emmeline, Ruby, Amber, Siobhan and I. Yes-terday, went to the competitive school Waldegrave to compete against numerous different teams. The first match that we played was a very tense match. The whistle blew and the game began. The competi-tive players fought hard but sadly the ending score was 2-1. Unfortunately the next two games were also lost but then we fought back and then thrashed our next opponents. Overall, our team was excellent and they can't wait to get back to get into training, ready for more tournaments.

Page 24: Grey Court School e-bulletin€¦ · September : Inset days (Staff only) Monday 8 September School starts -2 all students Head’s Line: “This school just gets better and better”

In support of the nationwide fundraising event ‘Sport Relief 2014’, Grey Court students and staff will be taking part

in the event by running/walking their mile in Richmond Park on Friday 21st March, during periods 4-6. The whole

school will be taking part except year 11 students, who are at a vital stage of their GCSE exam preparation.

Every student in years 7-10 will need to come to school dressed in their Grey Court PE kit. They will be completing the mile with their tutor group, walking from the Sandy Lane entrance, along Petersham Rd to the Petersham Gate of Richmond Park (pedestrian gate, opposite The Dysart Arms Pub) and finishing the mile at Ham Gate, where the students will be dismissed by SLT. It is important for parents to know that students will need to make their own way home from Ham Gate, or if they wish to head back to school then they can with their tutor. We have estimated that each year group will approximately finish their mile from the following times onwards based upon their start times: Year 7: 1.15pm Year 8: 1.30pm Year 9: 1.45pm Year 10: 2.00pm Students will be expected to contribute a minimum of £1, and if they would like to raise more money then they

can collect a sponsorship form from their form tutor. Form tutors will have more details about specific timings of

when they will be completing the mile next week. P lease see the above map of the route the students will be

taking.
