Don’t listen to music: Students who study in a quiet environment can recall more than those who revise while listening to music. 8. Get some fresh air and exercise: Taking a rest, going outside and getting some fresh air helps people to focus afterwards. Exercise helps people deal with stressful situations, it reduces anxiety and increases self-esteem. 9. Sleep: Recommendations: Regular bedtime, sufficient sleep and no mobile phone usage late at night. “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important

than the outcome”.

(Arthur Ashe)

College exams are underway and SP students commence their papers today. The

ASB Newsletter on 3 November outlined some helpful ‘exam tips’. In keeping with

this theme, The Guardian (April, 2016) suggested the following guidelines when

preparing for exams:

The science of revision: nine ways pupils can revise for exams more

effectively:

Before you do any revision

1. Eat breakfast: Research has found that skipping this meal significantly reduces

students’ attention and their ability to recall information.

2. Put your phone away: Phones are distracting, linked to FOMO (fear of

missing out) and pupils spending time texting and using social media get

lower grades. Research indicates the mere sight of a phone can reduce a

person’s ability to focus.

During revision sessions

3. Start early and spread it out: Spreading out revision is more effective than

spending the same amount of time in one go. ‘Spacing’ one’s revision is one

of the most robust strategies to enhance revision.

4. Test yourself: Testing yourself improves the ability to recall information. It

also identifies any gaps in your knowledge.

5. Teach someone: After you have tested yourself, teach the material to someone

else. This aids memory and recall.

6. Think twice about using highlighters: Highlighters can isolate ‘bits’ of

information. Information needs to be connected to the greater whole.

7. Don’t listen to music: Students who study in a quiet environment can recall

more than those who revise while listening to music.

8. Get some fresh air and exercise: Taking a rest, going outside and getting some

fresh air helps people to focus afterwards. Exercise helps people deal with

stressful situations, it reduces anxiety and increases self-esteem.

9. Sleep: Recommendations: Regular bedtime, sufficient sleep and no mobile

phone usage late at night.

As research into psychology continues to develop, we learn more and more about how best to help students

learn. Revision time can be challenging as it often requires students to monitor their own behaviour when

working independently at home. Hopefully, by teaching them about what helps improve their memory, mood

and concentration, we can better equip them to meet challenges head on.

All ASB students are wished well for a calm, steady and ultimately rewarding end-of-year exam time.

Dear Mums , Dads and Guardians

A friend of mine is currently

studying towards a history degree

via distance learning with a dis-

tinguished university in London,

United Kingdom. What I have

found fascinating (and concern-

ing to a degree) is how the

course is structured, keeping in

mind that my undergraduate de-

gree was completed some thirty

years ago now! (No sums please)

What I have found astounding is

that there is absolutely no term

course work to be submitted, as

in essays or tutorials to be com-

pleted. Brief lecture notes are

provided online, as well as a

reading list for the section of

work. Essentially, the only as-

sessment for the whole academic

year is the set of examinations

written in May. (The UK aca-

demic year starts in September

every year)

When I reflected upon this sys-

tem of studying, I realized the

vital role that schools play in

helping our students and chil-

dren prepare for the writing of

examination papers. It is essen-

tially a life skill that cannot be

avoided, like passing your learn-

er’s license!

Examinations teach some very

important skills, like learning how

to prepare a section of work,

planning your time, working un-

der pressure, controlling perfor-

mance anxiety, maximizing com-

prehension and finally, epitomiz-

ing the facilitation and validation

of personal intuitive thought.

I am reminded of a story told to

me by a senior mentor ,who told

me how for one of his final ex-

ams he had to select an envelope

and return with a full set of an-

swers by 18:00 the same day.

Thinking on your feet. That is

what it is all about!

Daar is

altyd pret en gelag in Mev Heunis se Afrikaans klas!
