Where to charge?• Most charging is done at home

• The car is full every morning

• Plugs are everywhere

• Many stores and hotels now provide

“destination chargers”

• Cars can be charging while unattended

(different paradigm)

• Tesla provides Level 3 charging

network

• Many other level 3 charging networks

being built, e.g. Peaks to Prairies, Petro

Canada

Winter Driving with an EV –Advantages

• No need to “start” – just drive away• Performs the same in any weather• Quick heating, no waiting for the engine

to warm up• Heating can be turned on remotely, no

need to “start”• Excellent AWD; traction controlled at a

microsecond level• Massive battery allows many hours of

heating if stuck somewhere

Page 19: Greg Petti Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta My EV

Heating/Cooling Controlled by App

Page 20: Greg Petti Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta My EV

Winter Driving with an EV –

Disadvantages

• Any heat must use battery power (very little wasted heat from drive train). • Extreme cold uses more battery power

due to cabin and battery heating.• This results in less driving range

This is not an issue for day to day driving but can make highway driving slower due to increased charging requirements.

Range> 400 Kms Range (some 500+)

Charging – Daily = Home charging/Highway = Supercharging

Winter - Overall improved driving experience

Reliability – Much more reliable (less moving parts)

Support - Less support required. Service Centers available

Early Adopter – Increasingly not an issue; community growing

Lower Cost

Page 33: Greg Petti Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta My EV

Overall EV Advantages

• No emissions – Lower emissions from more efficient energy source• Less motor = more room• Many passengers

• Huge practical space

• More aerodynamic = more efficient• Better power/torque• Low cost of energy (Electricity)• Low cost to support• Safer – Well designed/ huge front crumple

zone• Charge at home!

Buy for the 99.9% use cases!

Common Evolution for EV Owners

Page 35: Greg Petti Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta My EV

Current Situation for EVs

• Prices Coming Down• Several long-range models (including Tesla model 3) <$50K

• Federal Incentive

• Model S/X prices dropping

• Awareness of fuel and maintenance savings

• New battery technologies emerging = lower prices in future

• New EV Models• Pickup trucks!

• Cheaper SUVs

• More brands and models than ever

Fire Statistics

• US Fires per year; 2016 stats, 171,500 vehicle fires per year = nearly 20 fires per hour. • Some manufacturers have had so many vehicle fires (including

parked cars) that there are class action suits in multiple jurisdictions. • If a Tesla catches fire anywhere in the world, it makes news. • Including all types of fires there is roughly one Tesla vehicle fire for

every 170 million miles traveled.• National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the US Department

of Transportation record one vehicle fire for every 19 million miles traveled, Tesla’s figures make its electric cars over eight times less likely to be involved in fires.

Page 51: Greg Petti Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta My EV

EV Safety (Tesla Stats)

• Tesla’s Q4 2019 vehicle safety report also showed one accident for every 3.07 million miles driven with Autopilot engaged. Vehicles without Autopilot but have Tesla’s active safety features engaged, on the other hand, recorded one accident for every 2.10 million miles driven. Cars operating with no Autopilot and active safety features enabled recorded one accident every 1.64 million miles.• NHTSA) data estimates there is an automobile crash every 479,000

miles• All Tesla models (and most EVs) score 5 stars in every safety rating,

for major rating systems. (Euro NCAP, NHTSA). NHTSA rates Model 3, Model S and Model X as the lowest probability of injury against all other models of the top 50 tested (see next slide).

Tesla Ethical Sourcing – Conflict Minerals Report

Tesla’s Supply Chain

Our products use thousands of purchased parts, which we source globally from hundreds of suppliers.

Tesla is committed to only sourcing responsibly produced materials. In addition to the Tesla Supplier Code of Conduct, Tesla has a Human Rights and Conflict Minerals policy that outlines our expectations to all suppliers and partners that work with us. We strictly follow all U.S. and foreign law, and require our supply chain to do the same. All of our contracts require suppliers to adhere to our human rights policy and environmental and safety requirements. Tesla is committed to making working conditions in Tesla’s supply chain safe and humane, ensuring that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible. Tesla suppliers are required to provide evidence of the existence of policies that address these social, environmental, and sustainability issues as well as responsible sourcing.
