Greetings from your Division Vice-President—Jan Bell Volume 1, Issue 28 August, 2017 Welcome back to school! On behalf of all your colleagues in ACTEs Guidance and Career Development Division we celebrate you! Your professionalism and commitment to preparing your students for the global economy is meritorious! We begin this school year with so much exciting news! First and foremost, please help me give a big heartfelt Welcometo Dr. Nicole Cobb who will be the new incoming G&CD Vice President beginning June 30, 2018. Nicole comes to us from the great state of Tennessee and we are delighted to have her join us. In a follow up newsletter we will be highlighting Nicole and including a message from her directly to our division members. You wont want to miss the next addition! We also want to welcome the newest member to our G&CD Policy Committee, Phil Miller. Phil is a school counselor at Eastland Career Center in Groveport, Ohio. He will join us for his first board meeting in Nashville. As always during this very busy time of year we are feverously working to put all the pieces in place for VISION 2017. I encourage you to begin making plans to join your colleagues in Nashville, December 6- 9. This years conference will feature a luncheon provided by our generous partner, the Army Marketing Research Division. It is on a first-come-first-registerbasis. Now is the perfect time to renew your membership, take advantage of the discounted VISION 2017 registration fee and get a seat to the G&CD Division Luncheon. There are only a few spots left so hurry! This past June I was again privileged to attend the National Career Development Association Global Conference in Orlando. I was invited to share with their members the message of ACTE and the critical role that career and technical education plays in the life of our students. What a privilege to meet with likeminded professionals and share in their passion as well. If you would like to be a part of our newsletter, you have an inspiring guidance story you would like to share, or a best practicejust email those to me so they can be included in a future addition. Dont forget to check out our guidance website for incredible resources and additional information. Heres wishing you a fantastic new school year and if you want to be more involved with ACTE or just our division, I would love to hear from you! All my best to you,

As the career and college readiness specialist at the Northeast Metro Career Technical Center (CTC) in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Shelli Sowles developed the center’s first career and college readiness series (CCRS). The series was so successful that students from outside CTC started attending and it has since become a mandatory offering for CTC students. Sowles was instrumental in facilitating the expansion of a statewide data-driven college articulation repository website which has dramatically increased communication and visibility for career exploration and college credit opportunities. It is now used in over half the state Perkins consortia with participation from over 300 high schools and 31 two-year Minnesota colleges. Furthermore, Sowles directly contributed to the expansion of concurrent enrollment/transcripted college credit option for students, helping high school students earn over 3,200 college credits last year, saving families nearly $50,000 in college tuition. In addition to these initiatives, Sowles’ contributions to student leadership programs have made a signifi-cant impact on CTC students’ opportunities and success. The SkillsUSA chapter Sowles launched at CTC has grown in the last five years from one 12-student program to eight programs of over 350 student members. In 2010, Sowles developed the CTC student ambassador program to develop the leadership skills of the center’s most promising students. The program has grown to recruit 100 students a year, and has been cited by the North Central Accreditation AdvancED Committee as a vital part of student success at the CTC. “I have seen [Shelli] work with and lead students in such a way they see their potential, abilities and future careers,” says Carrie Hageman, Century College Career Services Director. “She is a team member…one that I have relied on and valued tremendously.”

ACTE Guidance and Career Development Division is proud to honor Shelli as the 2017 National Career Guidance Award Winner!

Engage Middle School Students in CTE to Inspire Career Exploration Research has identified middle school as a time when students can benefit the most from career exploration, a process of building self-awareness, learning about poten-tial careers, and developing a plan for reaching future goals. A key way career explo-ration is provided to middle school students is through exploratory and introductory CTE courses, as well as career and academic planning through scalable technology, CTSOs and work-based learning experiences. ACTE® has partnered with Career Cruising to produce Career Exploration in Middle School: Setting Students on the Path to Success which identifies the benefits of ca-reer exploration and ways to implement and improve school programs because it’s never too early for students to start preparing for their career and the pathway that will help them achieve their goals. …and Join the Conversation by participating in ACTE's Linked In Group on Middle School CTE. ACTE has launched a new “Middle School Career Exploration via CTE” LinkedIn Group to serve as a professional learning forum for administrators thinking about how to share, initiate, build and improve middle school CTE and career development! Administrators are invited to join the LinkedIn Group. Each week ACTE will be launching a new theme that will be shared to spur the conversation, but any middle school CTE/career development topic is welcomed to be explored in the space.
