Malaysia, situated in Southeast Asia, boasts of being one of the major tourist destinations in the world. Cultures have been meeting and mixing in Malaysia since the very beginning of its history. Malaysia’s cultural mosaic is marked by many different cultures, but several in particular had especially lasting influence on the country. Chief among these is the ancient Malay culture, and the cultures of Malaysia’s two most prominent trading partners throughout history—the Chinese, and the Indians. These three

groups are joined by a dizzying array of indigenous tribes, many of which live in the island of Borneo. Although each of these cultures has vigorously maintained its traditions and community structures, they have also blended together to create contemporary Malaysia’s uniquely diverse heritage resulting in the experience of gastronomical journey.
Establishment: University of Malaya derives its name from the term ‘Malaya’ as the country was then known. The University has its roots in Singapore with the establishment of King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1905. In 1949 University of Malaya was formed with the amalgamation of King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College (founded in 1928) in Singapore. The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous

Mission
Divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on 1st January 1962.
UM is the first public university established in Malaysia with a long history of producing notable alumni and contributed to the development of the country. Since its inception in 1905, it has achieved numerous accolades and will continue to deliver the best academic experience, excellent research, and world class educational facilities.
Over 200 programmes are offered covering the whole spectrum of learning from Arts, Sciences, and Humanities. Among all more than 32 courses are listed in QS World Top 200 subject rankings.
UM has produced notable alumni that have contributed significantly towards the development of Malaysia and abroad including a number of former Prime Ministers like Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammed and Tun Dr. Ahmad Abdullah Badawi.

Programme Structure• The academic programme is by the semester system and commences in September (Semester I) and February
(Semester II). • The medium of instruction is English (for all science based courses). • Some programmes in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Academy of Malay Studies, and Academy of Islamic Studies
however may use the Malay or Arabic Language.In general, the minimum and maximum duration are as follows:

On Campus Shuttle ServiceDuring term time the University operates a free inter-campus shuttle bus services that serves a number of routes to ferry students between their dormitories and the academic faculties.
The Shuttle bus is provided for the transfer of students and staff along the routes on campus for the purpose of attending lectures and/or any other University business. Additional services offered by external bus companies are available for routes outside campus and into the City Centre.

SecuritySince its establishment in 1967, the University of Malaya Security Office is responsible for the safety and security of the University staff, students, premises as well as the various high-tech machinery and cutting edge research work on University grounds.
Patrolling the University’s 750-acre compound nestled in between two extremely rapid development locations, Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, offers unique challenges and requires quick reactions to protect everyone on campus from violent crime, theft, destruction of property, fire and more.
The Security Office is currently located in Block C, Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah Residential College (12th Residential College).

Student Health ClinicStudent Health Clinic was established in the year 1962 under the University and College Act, Act XIV. This act was then revised effective 30th July 1977. In 2002, this act was revised again to The Regulations of University of Malaya (Student Health Service Scheme) 2002. The Student Health Clinic is a unit under the Student Affairs and Alumni Department.
Services & Facilities The Student Health Clinic provides the following services & facilities:

Financial and Banking ServicesThere are many banking services scattered around the University campus which provide banking facilities and services to students, staff and visitors. CIMB Berhad is situated at the Bursa Building, Bank Simpanan Nasional is located at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Bank Islam at the Examination Complex. Additionally, ATMs are available at strategic locations around the University.
Students can apply for the National Higher Education (PTPTN) Fund. There are three banking services on campus which facilitate this; CIMB Berhad, Bank Islam Berhad and Bank Simpanan Nasional.

RecreationalThe campus sports and recreational facilities are managed by the Sports Centre. The Centre has facilities made accessible to all university staff and students.
The University of Malaya has excellent outdoor and indoor sports and recreational facilities. There is an Olympic sized swimming pool at the Sports Centre, several tennis courts and fields for soccer and rugby. The Sports Centre also organizes sporting activities and co-curriculum courses, besides serving as the coordinating body for all sporting facilities on campus as well as conducting teaching and research related to sports. There is also a jogging track around the Varsity Lake.
