Greetings from Grace! Monthly Newsletter
April 2017 Reverend Benjamin J. Kifer, Pastor
1776 N. Market St. / P. O. Box 2505 Washington, NC 27889
Tel: 252-975-1988
Several wonderful (and very good looking) volunteers showed up on Thursday,
March 30th to clean, trim and plant flowers on the church property. Pictured
above starting at the far left and moving clockwise are Sue Dawson, Jerry
Snapp, Erwin Meier, Tom Volk, Lois Hoot, Flo Meier, Jean Richardson, Deb
Johnston and Lyle Carlson. Many may remember that our beautiful landscaping
was designed by the very talented Antje Schnaekel. This work is incredibly
important in making the church inviting to others. We are very thankful to these
hard workers for giving their time toward sprucing up our property. Their hard
work helps us all to be proud of our church! Thank you to everyone who
participated in this vital work!

Pastor’s Message April 2017
“I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.” – The 2nd Article of the Apostle’s Creed.
I believe that Jesus Christ – true God, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary – is my Lord. At great cost he has saved and redeemed me, a lost and condemned person. He has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil – not with silver or gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death. All this he has done that I may be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in
everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true. – Luther’s explanation of the 2nd Article.
As we spend this year in recognition and celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, it is important that we take time to remember just what the Reformation was all about. In the Apostles Creed (which has been in use nearly all of the life of the Church for 2000 years) we devote the most time to confessing our belief about Jesus Christ – God the Son, and the majority of what we confess about Christ revolves around his passion, death, burial, descent, and rising again in triumph over death.
It may seem strange, then, that the central tenants of our faith – the activity of Christ in his death and rising – is celebrated in the span of just one week. Beginning April 16th, we will begin celebrating Holy Week, with important days that include Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. The Church celebrates these final steps toward the cross and the miraculous aftermath in this timeframe in order to give us a realistic sense of the timeframe of the Gospels. All of these amazing things happened in one week, and so we observe them all in a week.
But do not let that short
timeframe fool you. This month, during Holy Week, we participate in observance of the absolute pinnacle of God’s Salvation for the world. “The 3 Days,: as brief as they seem, mark for us the moments in which the almighty power of God intervened in the brokenness and sin of the world and saved God’s children from sin, death, evil, and futility – and saved the souls of people across the eons – including yours and mine.
So, “keep awake!” as the Scriptures would say – pay attention, focus, stay in the moment – because this month, we take part in those crucial moments in the story of Christ that truly and directly lead us to everlasting life. Lenten Blessings to you – and Happy Easter!

New AED to be Installed at GLC
Last month, Grace's Church Council
approved funding to purchase an AED
defibrillator. It has arrived and is in the
process of being mounted in the narthex.
We have an opportunity to be trained
on this device with Michael Francis of
the Red Cross on Saturday, April 29th
at 9:00 a.m., in the Sanctuary Building.
Please talk to Sue Dawson or Pastor Ben
if you are interested in signing up for this
potentially life-saving training! Please
thank Sue Dawson for taking the lead on
this project! This equipment will be a
welcome addition to our church!
Lent through Easter Schedule
The theme for each Lenten service will be the “Lenten Catechism Series” led by
rotating Pastors from the Coastal Plain Conference of the NC Synod. The series will
cover the five parts of Luther’s Small Catechism. A soup and sandwich meal will
precede each Wednesday service with time to be coordinated with the Fellowship
committee. Maunday Thursday Service is set for April 13, at 6:00 pm , the Good
Friday Service will be held on April 14, at 6:00 pm (One service only this year)
and Easter Service on April 16, at 10:30 am and Easter pot-luck breakfast will
precede the worship service.
Special Announcements!
Wednesday Lenten Lunches
The holy season of Lent is a busy one! This is especially true on Wednesdays, as we
plan to participate in the traditional community Lenten worship and lunch program,
which is being hosted by First Christian Church (307 E. 3rd Street - new church
with the big red roof!) this year. This will take place each Wednesday in Lent (April
5th). Please see Deb Johnston for details about helping with this meal.
God’s Work...Our Hands Tee Shirts
Shirts are available in many styles and sizes - but all in the fabulous golden color we
all love! Please pick up an order form on the table nearest the entrance to the
narthex, fill it out, and return it to Pastor by the first week in April. Page 4
Last call for Synod Assembly Delegates
This is your last chance to talk to Pastor about representing Grace at the Synod's
Annual Assembly - being held this year in Greensboro at the Khoury Convention
Center. Come and make your voice heard during the first weekend in June, and get
up to speed with what our Church leaders are up to!
Special Announcements!
The Martyrs - Sunday School Topic Throughout Lent
In the years after Christ's death, many believers sacrificed their own lives - unwilling to
deny their faith that Jesus was God's Son. During each Sunday in Lent, please join
us for the Sunday School hour - 9:00 a.m. - as Pastor Ben walks us through a
study of the early Christian martyrs. "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the
church." - Tertullian
Wednesday Lenten Services
During Wednesday evening of Lent, we
gather at Grace at 5:15 for soup supper
and worship at 6:00. We are excited to
welcome a number of Coastal Plain
Lutheran clergy, who will rotate pulpits to
supply a message and worship based on
Luther's Small Catechism - 1 week each
for the 10 Commandments, the Creed, the
Lord's Prayer, Communion, and Baptism.
Please support these weekly fellowship
and worship opportunities and help us
host regional pastors!
Rev. Phil Tonneson to lead Maundy Thursday Service
On April 13th, Grace Lutheran is excited to welcome Rev. Phil Tonnesen from our
Synod office, to share a meal with us and preach for worship! He has meant a lot to
our congregation throughout the years. Dinner is at 5:00 p.m., and worship is at 6:00
p.m. Please plan to attend this service and show our appreciation to Pastor Tonneson.

The Laughing Lutheran!
A pastor of a church is sitting in his study when the
phone rings.
"Hello, is this Reverend Jones?" the caller asks.
"It is." replied the pastor.
"This is Bill Johnson with the Internal Revenue
Service. I was wondering if you could answer a few
questions?"
"I'll try." said the pastor.
"Do you know a John Timmons?"
"I do."
"Is he a member of your congregation?"
"He is."
"Did he donate $10,000 to the church?"
"He will."
Taxing Humor!
After a worship service at First
Baptist Church in Newcastle,
Kentucky, a mother with a
fidgety seven-year-old boy
told me how she finally got her
son to sit still and be quiet.
About halfway through the
sermon, she leaned over and
whispered, "If you don't be
quiet, Pastor Charlton is going
to lose his place and will have
to start his sermon all over
again!"
It worked.
Silence is
Golden

Committee Reports
The Fellowship Committee has remained busy during the season of Lent with the
‘Soup and bread’ meal prior to each Lenten service and coffee/tea being served
during our Fellowship time after church. They also hosted a Lenten luncheon for more
than 100 people at First Christian Church on March 22! As Easter fast approaches,
the committee will soon return to its normal schedule of providing food and beverages
after church. Don’t forget to bring something for the Easter Sunday breakfast at
9 am, on April 16. An Easter egg hunt will follow the breakfast. Also, please
bring flowers to adorn the Resurrection Cross during the church service!
GLC’s Lutheran Men in Mission (LMIM) have scheduled a highway clean-up for
Saturday, April 8th, at 9:00am. All members of the Church are welcome to join in
cleaning the roughly 2 mile section of Market Street Extension (in front of the church).
Safety vests and trash bags will be available to all volunteers at the church.
LMIM have also scheduled the annual yard sale for Saturday, May 6, starting at 7
am. Clean up for yard sale will be on Thursday, May 4, at 10:00am. Yard Sale set
up will be Friday, May 5, at 12 noon. Please start setting aside items for this event.
It is a big fund raiser for the club and the church.
The next LMIM meeting is scheduled for June 10, 2017 at the Neer Do Well
Restaurant in Washington.
Zion Shelter (homeless shelter for men)
(on going)
On the third Wednesday of the month,
(April 19) members of Grace will prepare
and deliver a meal for Zion Shelter
clients. Contact Jean Richardson if you
would like to help or donate food.
Eagle’s Wings (local food pantry) (on-going)
Eagle’s Wings continues to ask for: toiletries, like toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, feminine hygiene
products, deodorant, shampoo, etc. There is a special need for baby items such as disposable
diapers and baby wipes. You may place your donated items in the container marked Eagle’s Wings
located in the Fellowship Hall. All items are collected on the first Sunday of each month and
delivered to Eagle’s Wings.
Transportation services (on-going)
A number of Grace's members have offered to drive others who may not be able to drive
themselves to doctor appointments, errands, or evening church events. If you are available to drive,
please put your name and telephone number on the sign-up sheet on the narthex bulletin board,
and indicate whether you would be willing to drive at night. Also, if you are in need of a ride, you
can make a note of that on the right-hand list, or contact the Social Ministry Committee through
Eileen Gustafson, 946-1497.
Ruth’s House (a safe house for victims of domestic violence) (on-going)
The current and on-going needs for Ruth’s House are posted on the bulletin board in the narthex.
There is a collection bin in the Fellowship Hall. Please place your donated items in the bin marked
“Ruth’s House” and it will be delivered to those in need. Ruth’s House also operates an Antique
Store. Donations of antiques, furniture, glassware, collectibles, etc. are very welcome!
Red Cross/Disaster Relief: Ron Hermany is over seeing this outreach and he will keep us
informed on forthcoming information. If you would like to become a volunteer, please see Ron. For
those who want to give blood, I will be posting the Red Cross blood drive schedule, as they become
available, on the bulletin board.
Prayer Shawls, Hats & Scarves, etc.: The Needlers create prayer shawls (for anyone in need) as
well as hats and scarves for Zion shelter. As winter sets in, please remember the homeless. They
need hats, scarves and socks. Also, Skip Keim, delivers the ‘bosom buddies’ pillows to cancer
patients. These are small pillows, 8-12 inches, any shape. If you have any questions please let Jean
know.
The Coastal Pregnancy Center will be our outreach project for the 2017 Lenten Season. CPC
can use items like diapers (all sizes), bottles, clothes for new born (used in good condition or new),
crib sheets, toiletries, etc. Please place them in the container for them set up in the Fellowship Hall.

would like for our congregation to do for
‘God’s Work Our Hands’ Sunday in
September, please let Jean Richardson
know and she will be happy to help plan
and organize the activity. Also if anyone
has a special outreach project they would
like for our congregation to undertake,
please contact Jean.
A message from Jean Richardson…
We are thankful for all who contribute to
our outreach ministry. Check out the
articles in the newsletter under Zion/
Blind Center monthly meal; Ruth’s
House; and other programs.
Thanks to all who have brought items to
fill the box for the Coastal Pregnancy
Center. There are only two more weeks
in the Lenten season, so let’s keep it
coming for this new outreach.
And, don’t forget the boxes for our
ongoing outreach for Ruth’s House,
Zion, and Eagles Wings. Our next date
to prepare lunch for Zion and Blind
Center clients will be April 19. If you
can’t cook, feel free to donate food!
The Needlers have started meeting
again and are making prayer shawls,
hats, scarves, etc. They are meeting
every second and fourth Thursday of
the month at 1 pm in the Fellowship
Hall. The prayer shawls are made for
anyone in need. The hats and scarves
go to Zion shelter. Small pillows,
referred to as ‘bosom buddies’ (8-12
inches, any shape) are made for cancer
patients. Anyone who likes to knit,
crochet, quilt, etc., are welcome to
share in this fellowship.
If you have any questions about any of
these projects, please let Jean know.
God’s work. Our hands.

Last month, Grace's Church Council approved
funding to purchase and install an AED
(automated external defibrillator) in the narthex.
It has arrived and is in the process of being
mounted.
An AED is a portable electronic device that
automatically diagnoses the life-threatening
cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and
ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able
to treat them through defibrillation, the
application of electrical therapy which stops the
arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an
effective rhythm.
With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs
are designed to be simple to use for the
layperson.
We have an opportunity to be trained on this
device with Michael Francis of the Red
Cross on Saturday, April 29th at 9:00 a.m., in
the Sanctuary Building.
Please talk to Sue Dawson or Pastor Ben if you
are interested in signing up for this potentially
life-saving training! And please thank Sue
Dawson for taking the lead on this project! This

Pictured right is our good friend
Doris Hofmann, who recently
moved to Texas and is making all
sorts of new friends - including a
Great Horned Owl. We’re not sure
how they met, but Doris knew that
her new friend was having eye
problems, so she contacted her
eye doctor who agreed to test the
owl’s eyes. Her doctor, who is a
falconer himself, is very interested
in eagles and hawks, etc., and was
happy to help. As it turned out, the
owl can only see a little bit and
can't be released back into the
wild. If it was released, it couldn't
see to catch food and would starve
to death. So, a wildlife center was
contacted and it agreed to take the
bird for educational presentations.
Doris states, “I was lucky enough
to be able to be in a picture with it
and I am sure my son will agree
that the owl takes a better picture
than I do. LOL.”
