Jersey BoysFriday, Nov. 9 • 7:30 p.m.

They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard … and the radio just couldn’t get enough of it. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story — a story that has made them an international sensation all over again.

Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the Tony and Grammy Award®-winning true-life musical phenomenon Jersey Boys. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true.

Featuring the legendary top 10 hits: “Sherry”“Big Girls Don’t Cry”“Walk Like a Man”“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”“December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)”

Jersey Boys contains authentic “profane Jersey language” and is recommended for ages 12+.

IN THE MOOD 25th Silver Celebration TourSaturday, Feb. 16 • 7:30 p.m.

In the Mood is a celebration of the music of the 1930s and ’40s — the Big Band era. It was the last time that all Americans were listening and dancing to the same kind of music. With the live, sensational 13-piece String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra and the fabulous In the Mood singers and dancers, the great melodies and lyrics that are still with us today are presented in a musical revue that is jazzy, sentimental, rhythmic, nostalgic and patriotic — all happening at the same time. With music arrangements, costumes and choreography, In the Mood is as authentic as it gets.

Cirque Éloize – Saloon: A Musical Acrobatic AdventureTuesday, Feb. 26 • 7:30 p.m.

The saloon doors swing open to reveal a motley cast of individuals, each with a tale to tell. In Cirque Éloize’s Saloon, the infectious energy of folk music and strains of fiddle set the tone for an acrobatic comedy that sweeps spectators away in a mad flurry. Positioned at the heart of the renewal of circus arts, Cirque Éloize has been creating moving performances filled with magic and emotion since 1993. Continually striving for artistic perfection, it is one of the leaders in contemporary circus arts.

ARTIST SERIES

Robert Frost: This Verse BusinessBy A.M. DolanStarring Gordon ClappThursday, Aug. 30 • 7:30 p.m.

For nearly 50 years, Robert Frost “barded” around the country charming audiences with his celebrated verse and rascally sense of humor. Now, Emmy-winning actor Gordon Clapp (Detective Medavoy, “NYPD Blue”) plays Frost, whose great wit and poetry are heard afresh in the award-winning one-man show. In Clapp’s acclaimed performance, the funny and flinty old icon shares his poems and his pointed “wild surmises” on religion, science, “liberals” and “conservatives.” Culled from actual recordings, interviews and letters, Robert Frost: This Verse Business is both an exhilarating glimpse of the public and private faces of America’s beloved poet and an entertaining testament to the intrinsic value of the arts.

St. Lawrence String QuartetTuesday, Oct. 16 7:30 p.m.

“Modern ... dramatic ... superb ... wickedly attentive ... with a hint of rock ’n roll energy ...” are just a few ways critics describe the musical phenomenon that is the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The SLSQ is renowned for the intensity of its performances, breadth of repertoire and commitment to concert experiences that are at once intellectually exciting and emotionally alive.

Recent highlights include performances with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony in John Adams’ “Absolute Jest” for string quartet and orchestra, and the European

premieres of Adams’ second string quartet.

Established in Toronto in 1989, the St. Lawrence String Quartet quickly earned acclaim at top international chamber music competitions and was soon playing hundreds of concerts per year worldwide. It established an ongoing

residency at Spoleto Festival USA, made prize-winning recordings for EMI of music by Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Golijov, earning two Grammy nominations and a host of other prizes before being appointed ensemble-in-residence at Stanford University in 1998.

We Shall Overcome – A Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.Tuesday, Feb. 12 • 7:30 p.m.

Inspired by the words and action of Martin Luther King Jr., We Shall Overcome showcases repertoire from across the African-American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from King’s recorded speeches.

This production ties together a living lineage of music and culture that includes traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spirituals. From Aretha Franklin to Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone to Donny Hathaway, and traditional spirituals and music from The Wiz, producer and musical director Damien Sneed’s unique understanding of each genre allows him to fluidly cover so much musical ground in a single performance.

ensemble 4.1Thursday, Jan. 31 7:30 p.m.

The only “piano windtet” in the world! Four wind soloists, keen to chamber music, and one pianist devote themselves to this still undiscovered wonderful musical genre. Their special communicative power and their intoxicating atmosphere on stage are repeatedly praised by critics and have become the hallmark of ensemble 4.1.

In addition to the masterpieces for this original setting by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, the ensemble is devoted to discovering rarely played compositions from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

After many years, music by composers such as Walter Gieseking, Theodor Verhey, Heinrich von Herzogenberg and David Stephen is again being performed for an enthusiastic public.

“DAMIEN SNEED IS AN AMBASSADOR FOR CLASSICAL AND GOSPEL MUSIC WHO BRINGS POSITIVITY, OPTIMISM AND THOROUGHNESS TO EVERY OCCASION. HIS TALENT STRETCHES ACROSS TRADITIONAL DIVISIONS. IN THE REALEST SENSE, HE USES HIS ARTISTRY TO MAKE OUR WORLD A BETTER PLACE.” — Wynton Marsalis

JAZZ SERIES

The Hot SardinesThursday, Sept. 13 • 7:30 p.m.

Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, the Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world.

In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through its brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice.

The Hot Sardines have been featured at the Newport and Montreal jazz festivals, have sold out New York City venues from Joe’s Pub to Bowery Ballroom and more than 150 tour dates from Chicago to London, and have released two albums on Universal Music Classics to critical raves and a No. 1 slot on the iTunes jazz chart in the U.S. and internationally.

Warren Wolf QuartetTuesday, Nov. 13 7:30 p.m.

At the age of 3, Warren Wolf began training on the vibraphone/marimba, drums and piano. Wolf later attended the Peabody Preparatory School and Baltimore School for the Arts, studying classical, jazz and ragtime music. After graduating from the Baltimore School, he enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. At Berklee, he studied with Caribbean jazz vibraphonist Dave Samuels and with vibist Ed Saindon.

Since graduating from Berklee, Wolf has taken the jazz world by storm, first as a sideman in Christian McBride’s Inside Straight quintet, then with his self-titled debut in 2011 and with Wolfgang in 2013. Wolf has played or recorded with many musicians including Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Jeremy Pelt and Creation, Cyrus Chestnut, Kevin Eubanks, Wycliffe Gordon and Esperanza Spalding.

Ferri-Cornejo-Levingston: An Evening of Dance and MusicThursday, Sept. 20 • 7:30 p.m.

Internationally acclaimed ballet stars Alessandra Ferri and Herman Cornejo return to the Ford Center to join piano virtuoso and University of Mississippi Chancellor’s Honors College Artist-in-Residence Bruce Levingston in an unforgettable evening of dance and music. These three extraordinary artists have performed together throughout the world garnering rave reviews.

One critic wrote of their New York City performance: “The combination of these three great artists is more than the sum of its parts. The Ferri-Cornejo partnership is as full of rapture and poetry as that legendary pairing of Fonteyn and Nureyev. For his part, pianist Bruce Levingston was the perfect third to bring in and elevate this into a true concert and dance performance. Levingston’s playing was sublime throughout.”

Ferri, Cornejo and Levingston will present a memorable night of brilliantly choreographed works set to the music of Bach, Chopin, Glass, Mozart and Rachmaninoff. Levingston will be joined by other outstanding musicians and artists to create an exquisite musical ambiance that will highlight these illustrious dancers’ magical art.

Junie B. JonesSaturday, March 30 • 10:30 a.m.

Dear first-grade journal,

Hooray, hooray! There’s a musical (a play all jumbled together with singing and dancing, I believe) that’s all about me, Junie B. Jones! (The B stands for Beatrice, only I do not like Beatrice. I just like B, and that’s all.)

This is the bestest musical ever, I tell you! It’s got loads of funny songs, and it’s based on a bunch of books this lady, Barbara Park, wrote about me and the things I do in first grade.Junie B., First Grader (at Last!)

In first grade, I meet new friends (like Herb and José, but not that tattle-tale May). But my new teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks I might need glasses!

Junie B., Boss of LunchI get to help my friend, the cafeteria lady! And I get to wear a real actual hair net too! Who knows... Maybe someday I’ll be the boss of the whole lunch operation!

Junie B., One-Man BandThe whole entire first grade is having a kickball tournament! Only, when I practice my kicking, I stub my piggy toe so badly I can’t play. But my friend Sheldon can’t play either. So maybe we can do a half-time show instead!

Whew! I’m glad I can write everything down in my Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal! And you know what? I think I might like first grade after all!

Love (but not the mushy kind),Junie B.

H.M.S. Pinafore, or “The Lass that Loved a Sailor,” offers plot twists, whistleable tunes and rollicking fun aboard Her Majesty’s gallant ship Pinafore. The story of a lass

whose sorry lot is to “love too well” and a sailor who “alas, loves a lass above his station” remains

popular 140 years after its premiere. Gilbert wrote many jokes meant to poke fun at the

arch snobbery of these British characters, and Sullivan parodied Italian opera, wrote traditional

British hymn tunes and provided his famous patter songs. The longevity of this operetta can be attributed

to not only its historical musical importance but also that an audience just wants to sing along with these tunes. One does not need to know this musical theatre work to understand its humor, only observe, “things are seldom what they seem.”

W ith an ever-inquisitive mind, Gertrude Castellow Ford fully embraced the arts. As a patron, an observer and a practitioner, Ford engaged in a lifelong exploration of all things of beauty and inspiration, and

held true to classic traditions in the fine arts. She was an accomplished flutist, violinist and pianist as well as fluent in French, Latin and Spanish. Exceedingly well-read in poetry and classic literature, she was often at the center of spirited discussions about the merits of all manner of literary works and was not afraid to raise challenging concepts in literature, especially concerning the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays. Always at the very foundation of her spirit was a great and sincere love of the arts and letters.

Raised in a generations-old tradition of philanthropy, Ford established the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation in Jackson with a generous gift in 1991. In 1998, the Ford Foundation awarded the University of Mississippi $20 million to design and build the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts on the Oxford campus. This regal facility is a physical testament to Ford’s lifelong dedication to the arts. Ford died in September 1996. She and her husband, Aaron Lane Ford, who was an Ackerman attorney and U.S. congressman representing what was Mississippi’s 4th District, are buried in Cuthbert, a small town in southwest Georgia.
