It’s a miraculous yet familiar tale. Group of friends form a band, works their asses off gigging around town, cuts some demos, secures a recording contract, writes a hit

or two, emerges from local obscurity to global touring and sales success, hits a creative and in-terpersonal wall, disbands, wanders in individual obscurity for a few years, gets back together, old-er, wiser, produces the best effort of their career and does it all over again.

Okay, granted, it’s a grand simplification but a fairly accurate depiction of Candlebox, whose 1993 self-titled debut album released in the midst of the northwest existential musical, cultural maelstrom known as grunge rose above the grey Seattle mist to global notoriety. They grew up with the flannel-clad locals, but Candlebox was not a grunge band, riding the coattails of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and a scene whose explosion took on mythical proportions. They rocked without being

labeled or attached to a movement, pure and true to their melodic instincts, and sold six million re-cords in the process.

Singer Martin and guitarist Peter Klett -- the songwriting team that birthed Candlebox -- were reunited with original drummer Scott Mercado by the 2006 Rhino/Warner Brothers retrospective, Best of Candlebox. After being away from the music kingdom for nearly seven years, the band was welcomed back with open arms, invited to play radio shows across the country with Top 10 multi-platinum artists. More importantly, these longtime compositional compatriots discovered that the time and tide apart had nurtured en-hanced chemistry and mutual personal evolution that has now manifested in a cache of new songs that leave their past works, for lack of a better phrase, far behind.

“I left the band after the Happy Pills Tour in 1999,” says Klett. “Got really drunk, did a bunch

Page 11: GreenStock Program Guide by AZGreen Magazine

!

of drugs, played golf, moved to California, moved back to Seattle, fell down the stairs and got so-ber. Kevin called me while I was fronting a band called Red Light and told me about the Rhino project. Said it’d be a shame if we didn’t go out and do some dates, which we did in the summer of ‘06. And the fans came out and it was very vali-dating. We started writing together again in early ‘07 and it was beautiful.” Under the studio aegis of producer Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies/Life-house) and engineer Cliff Norrell, (Henry Rollins, REM), Martin’s punk and Klett’s classic rock roots have woven to form a breathtaking collection of eclectic tunes worthy of deeper assessment.

Their latest album, Into The Sun is a bold, eclectic mix of rhythms and textures highlighted by the ambitious, eight-minute plus Pink Floyd-ian opus called “Breathe Me,” a balls to the walls love ballad inspired by Martin’s Australian wife. “Peter and I have evolved as songwriters, musi-

cians and friends. We paint with much broader strokes now.”

This growth is evident in the crunchy, very electric and existential examination of the gypsy in all of us, highlighted by Klett’s swirling, echo-ing Robin Trower-like guitar riffs. “People think life on the road is a dream,” observes Martin. “It isn’t. It’s lonely and oft times, troublesome. If it weren’t for the fans and their energy, I’d just as soon stay home. But that’s what feeds the gypsy soul. That connection.”

In this brave new fiercely competitive world of evaporating record companies, digital down-loads and My Space created rock stars, when art-ists are given a rare second chance, they know they must rise to the occasion. Candlebox dis-appeared but they have most definitely returned and this time, it’s not the scene or the culture or the media doing the talking. It’s the music. And that is miraculous.

In his day-to-day dealings with members of LA’s music community, there are two things singer Chad Wolf has heard re-peatedly. One involves praise for his

songwriting skills, which seem to effortlessly tow the line between infectious pop music and a deeper, darker rock discourse. The other: dis-belief. How did your classic struggling musician, who toiled away at coffeehouse gigs for most of his adult life, end up in one of Europe’s biggest hit-making studios writing a full album of songs with a major label deal at his side? The story may seem far-fetched, but somewhere between acco-lades and accusations is honesty, which, ironi-cally, is what Carolina Liar is all about.

Chad’s musical aspirations started innocent-ly enough. Growing up in Charleston, South Car-olina, he was introduced to New Wave through his sister, who was eight years older. “The first record I ever bought was a 45 of Duran Duran’s

‘View to a Kill,’” he says with sentimental pride. “I brought it to my third grade class for show and tell. “By the time he got to junior high, Chad had graduated to Iggy Pop, but the Euro-centric sounds of Depeche Mode, the Cure and even Falco had also made a permanent mark on his psyche. A career in music, it would seem, was calling.

So at 22, Chad grabbed his guitar, boarded a plane for the very first time and moved to Los Angeles. To make ends meet, he held a string of odd jobs — working as an extra on a Celine Dion video, cleaning toilets in exchange for studio time — and eventually landed an internship with renowned songwriter Diane Warren. It was then that Chad honed his own writing chops while anxiously absorbing any and all advice that Di-ane had to offer. “Diane told me, ‘You’ve got to go to Europe. They’ll be able to relate to what you’re doing and help give you some focus.’ But, at the

Page 13: GreenStock Program Guide by AZGreen Magazine

!

time, I really didn’t have the means to get out of the country.”

Which is where the story starts to get really interesting — and, at the same time, unbeliev-able. The affable Chad eventually networked his way to a job at a small label, and through new in-dustry relationships found himself house-sitting for a friend of famed Swedish producer Max Mar-tin. “Max and I became friends but I never wanted to bring up music,” Chad recalls. “We’d watch Ital-ian football together and I thought it was better to leave it that way.” But Max did end up hearing one of Chad’s songs and called him out of the blue one night to ask if he had more.

“No lie, on the very day I quit my day job, when I had no idea what I would do next, Max called at midnight and said, ‘If you can write three more songs like this one, maybe we can work something out.’” Fast forward to a few months later and Chad is taking in the sights of Stock-

holm, recording with one of Europe’s biggest hit-makers, and piecing together an all-Swede band that gives new meaning to the word “tight.”

Weeks in the studio found Chad and Max bonding over vintage guitars. It was Chad’s own relentless zeal, Max’s guidance, and another chance meeting that brought him to Atlantic Re-cords. “I honestly never thought I would get this opportunity,” he admits. “I believed in the music, and I was never going to stop playing, even if that meant just coffeehouses, but after years of trying, I thought it would always be very indie. I never saw it turning into this.”

But now that he has the platform and sup-port, Chad is giving Carolina Liar his all. “The biggest thing I learned from working with Max is to not let yourself get in the way of a song,” Chad muses. “Let it do its thing and live on its own. It can speak very loudly.”

Imagine. Thanks to GMA’s 2009 Dove Award nomination, thousands of people did. So what if Fireflight was a modern rock act nominated along-

side six of Christian music’s biggest giants? The future had arrived. Now, with the release of the band’s double-taker of an album, For Those Who Wait, it’s time for everyone else to catch up.

The band’s Flicker Records 2006 debut, The Healing of Harms, rocked two No. 1 radio singles. Before their 2008 sophomore album, Unbreakable released, NBC repeatedly used its title track for prime time television promos. The fuse had been lit, and the album debuted at No. 10 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Fireflight won Taco Bell’s fan-voted “Best of the Beat” contest and then performed at ESPN’s “Winter X Games 13.” As Fireflight logged additional audio exposure on televi-sion, Christian rock and pop radio fanned its own flames, sending three more Fireflight

singles to No. 1. Before the smoke cleared, the “Unbreakable” music video logged more than a million plays on YouTube.

Front and center? One Dawn Michele. With all due respect to exceptional peers such as Paramore and Evanescence, not all female lead singers are created equal. Armed with an arresting voice that’s drawn comparisons to Joan Jett and The Pretenders’ Chrissy Hynde, Dawn actually makes authoritative gut-rock sound beautiful. And her bandmates? With her every step of the way and, at times, elevat-ing the proceedings.

Fireflight guitarist/support vocalist Jus-tin Cox explains the record’s fuller, more mus-cular sound is the result of taking a different approach and different equipment into the studio. “I wanted this album to be way heavi-er and way bigger. The results were phenom-enal,” says Justin with a satisfied smile.

Fireflight’s first three albums have been a thematic travelogue of sorts. “This album

Sunday, April 17, 7:25 pm

Page 15: GreenStock Program Guide by AZGreen Magazine

!

is a maturation in understanding that some-times you don’t appreciate why you’re on the path that you’re are,” Dawn explains. “A lot of times, we get bogged down thinking about things that we’re waiting for. And when we do that, we totally miss out on what’s happening in-between now and our goal.”

This insight not only drives the album’s dynamic title track—a defiant rocker which shatters the “Unbreakable” mold—it frames the entire record. “It’s our lives, our hearts, and our pain just poured out. We worked to take the things that we struggled through and faced to leave a trail of bread crumbs, in hopes that other people would be able to see what we went through and find hope in that.”

Performed with hard-rocking urgency and emotion, combined with masterful piano-based ballads, the album takes you to the end of the rope and literally demands the only hope there is. At a time when count-less Americans are struggling with feelings

of inadequacy in today’s fragile job market, Fireflight offers the ascending rock track “All I Need to Be” as a prayerful reminder of where a believer’s identity should truly reside.

Fireflight also flexes its muscle in far-reaching compassion and justice efforts. Ex-plains Dawn, “We’re passionate about helping people both in America and in developing countries, where just a little can do so much.” As a result, Fireflight’s work includes a fo-cused partnership with The Legacy of Hope International, a ministry committed to serv-ing the most immediate needs of Cambodia’s poorest children.

This active commitment to compassion and justice also serves as a signpost for fans as Fireflight’s music encourages them to move beyond their personal struggles and reach out to a world eager to know healing in the waiting.

And when they were done playing Vinyl Station would name drop like crazy.

Wiley One (7:20 pm)Band leader, Sam Wiley of WILEY ONE, the acoustic hip hop blues ensemble from Arizona said, “I wrote the song Go Green because I wanted to spread awareness about the serious environmental issues around the globe as well inform people about green tech-nologies.
