What are shatterproof lamps and what do you need to know?Shatterproof Lamps are fluorescent tubes coated in a specially formed material with the sole purpose of fragment retention. A fluorescent lamp breakage would put a costly stop to production, as well as the obvious health risks glass fragments would create. A common misconception is that the glass tube itself is shatterproof, when in fact it is the sleeve acting as an aid to glass retention. The material is either extruded or heat shrunk to a fluorescent lamp, acting as a glass collector should the lamp itself shatter.

The plastic product used to coat the lamp is offered at two

different grades of materials – FEP and EcoCoat. Our FEP material has a longer life and is recommended for specific longer life lamps, such as Aura, whilst our EcoCoat material is best suited for the day to day use of standard fluorescents. These two materials coat the tube, creating the shatterproof sleeve and generating a glass retention function.

Designed to keep work areas and food production areas safe from potential glass contamination, shatterproof tubes are ideal for environments such as food manufacturing, grain stores and industrial buildings. The lamps are versatile, and so can be used in both

open and enclosed fittings. Should a tube shatter, the glass fragments would be collected within the sleeve, eliminating risk of contamination. The service our shatterproof tubes provide means that, in the event of a breakage, production can continue due to zero contamination risk.

It is commonly known within food manufacturing, preparation and a number of different industrial environments that the main risk of breaking light bulbs occurs during routine maintenance. Mishandling can result in uncoated fluorescent tubes to shatter and glass contamination to occur, potentially being very costly. This risk would be avoided if you were to invest in Greenstock Shatterproof Lamps who offer the ultimate in glass fragment retention.

Greenstock are able to provide two ranges of IEC 61549 compliant

products which have both been independently tested by the Lighting Industry Association.

The Industry standard of the two products is the FEP coating which has an average life of over 90,000hrs and conforms to the IEC/ BS EN 61549 standard, meaning not only do these lamps guarantee 100% fragment retention but they are approved to be used within food and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.

The requirement for FEP Shatterproof Lamps to be used within these environments is believed to soon become a legal obligation, which only emphasises the need for Shatterproof Lamps in the work place. We would recommend the FEP coating for using on long life lamps such as the Aura range for which Greenstock is a nominated distributor.

Another example of how bad quality material can peel off the lamp itself when it becomes too hot. You should always check that the material being used is fit for purpose and is compliant as the end results can be disastrous!!

The alternative option for standard rated lamps is our EcoCoat material which has been designed and manufactured to also comply to the IEC standard but with considerable savings over the FEP material. Standard lamps with an average life rating of 16,000 hours do not require such a long life coating and to counter balance we have introduced the EcoCoat material to the market. The EcoCoat material is fully IEC 61549 compliant as is the FEP but with an average saving of 20% it is the best option for standard tubes.

The IEC 61549 standard has been introduced to set a production and product quality standard for Shatterproof Lamps, a market that until now has operated with little legislation surrounding actual production and quality standards of Shatterproof Lamps for fragmentation retention.

The regulation has been introduced through BSI / IEC with input from the LCA (Lamp Coaters Association) of which The Greenstock Lamp Company is a founding member, helping to provide a benchmark of quality assurance and the production standards of lamps supplied into the shatterproof market. Using Greenstock coated lamps can help towards achieving and maintaining stringent health and safety, tractability and hygiene regulations as well as global standards in production quality, which is being utilised now more than ever as a result of globalisation.

The Greenstock Lamp Company has Independent Drop Test Reports and also full Independent testing to show their conformity to the IEC 61549 standard that are available on request and is something that any reputable supplier should be able to produce.

Purple is the New Black

People within the Shatterproof Lamps industry may understand what the colour and number of bands represents on a fluorescent tube, but for those of you that don’t The Greenstock Lamp Company are here to help... and quite simply it is not all about colour.

The truth is, the colour of the band is generally only a representation of the company that supplied the product (the band colour is branding), and needless to say a Purple Band for FEP represents The Greenstock Lamp Company. It has been perceived within the shatterproof industry that band colour represents conformity to certain regulations; however colour only represents the lamp branding and not necessarily quality or conformity. There are a variety of coloured bands available e.g. blue band, pink band, silver band and black band but please be aware the colour does not necessarily represent conformity.

Within the Shatterproof Lamp industry the specification of the lamp coating is illustrated by the number of bands that are located at one end of the fluorescent tube. You will see either 1 band, meaning the lamp is coated with a material that conforms to the IEC 61549 regulation. Both of the shatterproof products supplied by The Greenstock Lamp Company are single banded and suitable for open and enclosed fittings.

We at the Greenstock Lamp Company pride ourselves on manufacturing high quality Shatterproof Lamps that conform to a number of standards such as the IEC 61549. Allowing customers of The Greenstock Lamp Company to boast this compliance to their customers and have true peace of mind in the lamps they are supplying.

Whilst IEC 61549 is not currently a legal requirement within the food industry, it was formally released as an international standard during April 2013 and it is now considered best practice to comply with this standard. As such in order to avoid potential additional costs at a later date we would advise all our customers to start installing IEC 61549 compliant lamps now. For true peace of mind we would always recommend the single banded IEC compliant lamps directly from Greenstock.

We have recently introduced a fantastic new material called EcoCoat. EcoCoat is the economical entry level of glass retention which conforms to the highest standard to which shatterproof lamps can be coated. This provides the benchmark of quality assurance and the production standards of lamps supplied. Greenstock’s EcoCoat lamps are suitable for use in all food associated applications and are EN 61549 compliant. Unique to Greenstock, they can be used in either open or enclosed (IP65) fittings and are identified by a single green band around one end of the fluorescent tube. At an average saving of 20%, EcoCoat is extremely affordable and of the highest quality. Following the arrival of EcoCoat, companies that require glass retention lamps now have absolute assurance of IEC standard lamps at the same price as non-compliant lamps being offered elsewhere in the market. Independent test reports for before and after aging are available on request.

FAQ

Is all Shatterproof the same? No, not all Shatterproof is the same. Their quality depends on the material used. The coatings and processes vary, depending on the type of lamp and their application.

How can I tell if my lamp is IEC 61549 Compliant?IEC 61549 lamps should have a single band at one end of the lamp with ‘IEC 61549‘printed on it. If there are no bands, or more than one band, the lamp is not compliant. If you have any doubts about whether or not your lamp is compliant, ask the supplier to provide you with their independent drop test reports. All suppliers that supply lamps that conform to the IEC regulation should have this documentation readily available. Greenstock drop test reports are available online and on request.

What is the difference between EcoCoat and FEP material?The main differences between EcoCoat and FEP, aside from the material, would be lifetime – EcoCoat has a lifetime of 16000 hours (which still exceeds the 8000hrs required to achieve the IEC standard) whilst FEP has an expected lifetime of 90,000+ hours.

Is EcoCoat material IEC 61549 Compliant?Yes. Like FEP, our EcoCoat material is IEC 61549 Compliant and has been fully independently tested to conform to the highest standards. Drop test results are available on request and online.

Our company uses IP65 enclosed fittings. Why would we need to use shatterproof lamps?IP65 Fittings are designed to protect lamps against

dust and water and do not provide a totally glass free environment if an accident should occur. The main risks of breakage occur during routine maintenance where a mishandling incident can cause un-coated tubes to shatter and result in contamination. All EcoCoated Greenstock lamps are suitable for IP65 (high temperature) fittings.

FEPGreenstock’s purple banded FEP shatterproof lamps are well known

throughout the industry for the consistency of high quality material and conformity to the IEC 61549 standard. If you require long life lamps,

insect lamps or compact fluorescents, then we at Greenstock could not recommend FEP any higher; not only does this coating help contain

glass fragments should a breakage occur, it will subsequently reduce labour and costly replacements if an accident were to happen.

The FEP material has a life expectancy of approximately 90,000 hours with no embrittlement or discolouration. The maximum continuous operating temperature of a lamp with this coating is 200˚C within an enclosed fitting, the melting point of the material being 260˚C.

There are many companies within the UK claiming to manufacture and supply either FEP coated shatterproof lamps or IEC 61549 compliant material; however, it is important to request the independent drop test reports from any supplier as outlined in the IEC 61549 standard. This will ensure the durability of the material, as well as create peace of mind for you and your customer. Greenstock can supply full drop test reports on request and we also label our lamps with confirmation of compliance.

If a supplier is unable to provide this documentation then we would not recommend using their services, as without the certificate of compliance there is no viable evidence that you would be purchasing the high quality lamps that you require. The correct material and products will differentiate in not only price but also performance, and the Greenstock guarantee is to only use named brand lamps and fully tested and compliant FEP material.

Greenstock Lighting

Compact Fluorescents

The lamps themselves are coated with an FEP material, which is fully approved for use within the food industry and conforms to the IEC 61549 standard. A fully detailed technical specification of our FEP material is available upon request.

Our Compact Fluorescent lamps have been through meticulous testing to ensure full compliance to the BS EN 61549 standard; making it suitable for all manufacturing environments where accidents and breakages could put a stop in production. The glass retaining function of an FEP coated compact fluorescent makes it an ideal lamp for the food industry and hazardous areas.

Our lamps can be identified by a single purple band around one end of the fluorescent tube – signifying its conformity to the IEC 61549 standard. There are products on the market that do NOT comply to this standard, and we fully recommend that purchasers should request a copy of the Suppliers Certificate of Conformity or the Drop Test results, both of which Greenstock can provide upon request at no added cost. This is to ensure that you are only purchasing products which comply with the IEC standard, and that you will receive the highest possible quality product.

Our FEP coating is applied using specialist machinery under strict quality control procedures, ensuring that the highest quality possible is achieved. Our lamps are suitable for either open or enclosed (IP65) fittings.

With a 90,000+hr expected lamp life, Greenstock’s Compact Fluorescents are an ideal high quality, long life lamp that still remains affordable.

Insect TubesGreenstock’s Fluorescent Insect Tubes fit many popular fly killer fittings used within the commercial

environment; coated in FEP material, the tube is perfect for use within food manufacturing plants. Shatterproof

UV lamps are a safe, efficient way to attract insects for professional electrical/electronic fly killers and insect light

traps with the added feature of fragment retention due to the FEP coating. Insect tubes emit an upgraded, highly

concentrated radiation with a peak around 368nm; a flying insect’s eye sensitivity is generally at or near this frequency.

Food TubesGreenstock’s gourmet fluorescent tubes (or food tubes) are

designed for use in butchers fresh meat displays. Specialist ranges of tubes with phosphors are specifically designed

to enhance the fresh meat appearance. The tubes are designed to display food products at their best, by highlighting

BlacklightGreenstock’s Blacklight blue fluorescent tubes efficiently emit near

ultraviolet radiation at 315nm - 400nm with strong photochemical and fluorescent effects. The bulb is designed to fit neatly into

almost any bayonet style light fitting and will give off a constant stream of UV light. This bulb is actually a fluorescent tube formed

into the shape of a light bulb, much like modern ‘energy saving’ bulbs. Blacklight bulbs can be used for decorative and artistic lighting

effects, diagnostic and therapeutic uses in medicine, the detection of counterfeit money and attracting insects; whatever your use, Greenstock has the blacklights to meet your needs

Germicidal Lamps Greenstock’s germicidal lamps are used to sterilize workspaces and

tools used in biology laboratories and medical facilities and are also used in waste water treatment in order to kill microorganisms. The light

produced by a germicidal lamp must be carefully shielded against both direct viewing and reflections and dispersed light that might be viewed,

and should only be supplied if specifically requested by the customer. Our Germicidal lamps can be coated with FEP material which is used for

fragment retention.

Greenstock Lighting

Available over the T5 and T8 range, polycarbonate sleeves are a well established system for providing an aid to shatter retention using a minimum of 0.75mm wall thickness and an end cap each side, holding the lamp into place with a rubber seal.

Polycarbonate tubes are a simple yet effective sleeve to protect food products from fragments of glass, should a fluorescent lamp shatter. The clear and tough polycarbonate sleeve can withstand the high and low temperatures often associated with the food industry without any damage occurring to the sleeve.
